PoliticsRe: The Crime Wave And Racist Behaviours Of Americans Of Nigerian Descent by ektbear: 2:53am On Apr 26, 2012
Eh...Nigerians in america certainly are not uniformly saints. However, an isolated case or a few isolated cases doesn't mean a higher tendency towards crime, racist behavior, etc..

Let's be logical here

Lol @ "mental superiors." You have some personal issues to deal with...but hopefully you can resolve them outside of this thread.

My point is simple: Don't spend public resources on things not related to your job. That Bernanke appears to be doing this is not justification for Sanusi to do the same...morality and ethics are not relative. Or at least, they shouldn't be, in my opinion.

Who knows, perhaps someone will come up with a good argument for why these numerous speaking engagements (e.g., convocation speech at a private university) that Sanusi has which don't seem very related to his job description are in fact legitimate.

So far I've not seen a compelling argument, though..
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 12:41pm On Apr 25, 2012
wesley80: Reading through that, at first I thought Bernanke is doing this as a private individual:

"Four times starting Tuesday, Bernanke will take a break from his day job to revisit the academic life he led – and, by all accounts, enjoyed – before coming to Washington a decade ago. He'll stand before a class of George Washington University undergraduates and deliver a series of lectures on the Fed."

Then I came across this:
"Tim Fort, a business professor who specializes in ethics, developed the GW course in consultation with Bernanke's staff.
Beyond Bernanke's lectures, Fort has enlisted about a dozen GW faculty members to help teach the course."

To be honest it seems sketchy to me man...I don't feel any more comfortable with this than Sanusi's thing..

Both seem strange to me.

wesley80: Give it a rest you've got absolutely nothing on him. How do you define the "mandate" of a CBN governor? What's wrong with giving a speech at a convocation ceremony in ones capacity as a CBN governor and having a dept in the institution he governs prepare his speech?
Is giving a convocation speech at a university part of his job description?

Yes, or no?

And what's that tripe about spending work - related funds on things unrelated to his job? What "funds" are u talking abt? Are we still on this topic or have we veered to something else?
The argument of wastage of public funds appears hackneyed when it becomes an excuse to ridicule an individual out of what is increasingly looking like primordial sentiments. I don't see how an objective analyst would fault Sanusi given his defense except perhaps for poor oversight.
It is the same argument. If he is diverting the labor of his staff (paid for with public funds) for private purposes...
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 12:00pm On Apr 25, 2012
All I know is that I'd get into a helluva lot of trouble if I was spending funds not related to my job on giving speeches, or doing many other things which no doubt are admirable, wonderful, etc...but unfortunately not what I am being paid to do.

It is the type of thing that can get you fired or reprimanded. It is arguably corruption, to be quite honest..

Who knows, maybe Nigeria is different.

I guess in naija a CBN governor can spend most of his time giving speeches rather than focusing on fighting inflation, maintaining the exchange rate, etc...all the good stuff you expect central banks to do.

And people will look favorably upon this rather than asking questions.
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 11:54am On Apr 25, 2012
My brother.

Are these speaking engagements related to his JOB DESCRIPTION, what he was hired to do? I.e., be the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria?

If so, presumably speeches are not 80% of his mandate. So how on earth does he hope to be effective at his other obligations if he spends most of his time travelling across Nigeria giving convocation speeches? Like, don't you think that hurts his effectiveness?

And if not, then isn't it very questionable for him to be using huge amounts of public funds for something that is not part of his job description? I.e., spending public funds on what is essentially his private affair? That doesn't seem worrying to you?
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 11:36am On Apr 25, 2012
So my question is, is any time SLS invited anywhere to give a talk, even it has nothing little or nothing to do with his official mandate as CBN head, is it still fine to use CBN resources to prepare that speech?

I mean it seems slightly strange from my POV.

Also..how on earth does he have time to be doing all of this stuff not related to his job, and moreover spending work-related funds on things again unrelated to his job?
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 11:29am On Apr 25, 2012
wesley80:

You have missed the point of my Apple example.

Where did delivering convocation speeches at universities (private university, for that matter) become part of the job description of CBN head?

Like..so any time he gives a speech anywhere in public, even if it has absolutely nothing to do with his job, it is appropriate to have his staff prepare the speeches?

Even when it has nothing to do with his mandate, what he was hired to do...?
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 10:32am On Apr 25, 2012
If I'm the CEO of Apple, and am invited to give a speech at my alma mater, I presumably cannot use Apple resources to prepare said speech...it has absolutely nothing to do with what my actual job is..
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 10:30am On Apr 25, 2012
There is no "in any case."

That is the heart of the matter...you don't seem to understand.

There are two possibilities:
A) He gave the speech in his capacity as CBN head. Then absolutely fine to use CBN resources.
B) He gave the speech as a private individual. In which case, your "institutional" line of reasoning doesn't work.

If case A is true, how does giving the commencement speech relate to his mandate as CBN governor?
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 10:08am On Apr 25, 2012
I think I understand the word just fine. The point is, if you give a commencement speech at a university, this is probably not part of your job description as CBN head.

So not a priori clear that you'll be able to expend the resources of your institution to prepare that speech...
PoliticsRe: Why Are Some Fellas Obsessed With The ILAJE People? by ektbear: 9:51am On Apr 25, 2012
Well, the existence of Ilaje as a Yoruba subethnic groups messes up the narrative of Yoruba as parasites that some folk like to portray on NL.

This is why so many non-Yoruba seem to be interested in them...

From PapaBrowne who claimed that the Ilaje are not Yoruba, to various other clowns like Beaf and company.

Basically it is politics and propaganda..
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 9:47am On Apr 25, 2012
A convocation speech at a university = "institution paper"?

That was not "clear enough" to me at all...
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 9:05am On Apr 25, 2012
Jarus, the question is, the stuff which Sanusi is accused of plagiarizing, was that written by him, or by this research department?

Like, this speech given at a commencement for example.
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 8:58am On Apr 25, 2012
Fstranger, you know how much I dislike SLS. I hate his guts. But that I hate someone's guts doesn't mean that I am unwilling to listen to what might be an honest mistake.

Just because I'm saying that it *might not have been him* doesn't mean I am saying it 100% wasn't him. I don't know. And have no way of knowing, if this was a group-written document, as Jarus seems to be saying.

(Then again, for all we know SLS is lying. But I'm trying to give someone the benefit of the doubt here a bit...I assume that he isn't stupid enough to dig himself into a bigger hole by lying.)

And like I said earlier, even if it was his underling who fvcked up...well generally if your underling messes up, you get some of the blame too.

Yeah it seems plausible. The other other Hausa country next to them (Niger) is desperately impoverished and illiterate. The one with Kanuris (Chad) is also desperately impoverish and illiterate.

Perhaps it is just something intrinsic to Hausa/Fulani culture...

Maybe it is their destiny to be illiterate and poor

PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 8:31am On Apr 25, 2012
Speeches contain facts, figures, tables, data, do they not?

So at a minimum one might speculate that somebody else is responsible for assembling that data, not him. Unless we expect him to be pecking away at his computer looking for it himself...

Now, does that mean he didn't write the plagiarized material, that it was someone else?

Only he and those involved know for sure.
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 8:26am On Apr 25, 2012
Fair enough. If it was his research department who plagiarized, then perhaps there is an argument for not putting the blame on him (not saying that I agree with such an argument, but it isn't totally off-base.)

Surprising though that he doesn't prepare his own speeches...or hire more competent men.

Not a good look either way.

ABU today has a 2 year MS program.

I don't know if it was one year or not in the early 1980s.

Anyone who attended the school around that time or who would otherwise be familiar with it know?
PoliticsRe: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by ektbear: 3:48am On Apr 25, 2012
So if he spent 1 year on youth service, did he complete this MS from ABU in 1 year?

Did they even offer a 1 year MS at ABU in the early 80s?

South Sudan has a good excuse for being that low though. Ethiopia, Chad, Mali, Niger Republic do not..

Dis Guy: Maybe because he's a christain and from the south, imagine if this was your old friend Sanusi doing this or any other muslim governor hehehe
If it were even done at the level of a state, I could see the argument for it. Perhaps one might argue in favor of secular FG, but non-secular states. I don't think it is the most sound argument, but it isn't completely without merit.

But for the FG to start funding Islamic religious schools?

GEJ doesn't quite seem to understand what secular government means...
