Crowds gathered outside the White House in Washington DC, chanting "USA, USA" after the news emerged.

"USA, USA!"

On a serious note though, this makes you feel kind of proud

If a girl tells me she wants to be friends now (and I was looking for more), I'll just immediately walk in the other direction.

I don't want to waste my time listening to boring-@ss sob stories about her relationships  smiley

The worst is the chick who wants to be "friends", but will want to go out (with you paying), call you up when she needs help, etc.

Basically, all the bad parts of a relationship, with none of the benefits.

Fvck friends.

LMAO. I will never tell a girl that, if I'm looking for more. What is the point of lying, getting her confused? smiley

Plus if you do become friends with her, how do you go from there to a relationship? I dunno how to go from platonic friendship to romance.

8. I'm not attracted to you in 'that' way.
(You are the ugliest dork I've ever laid eyes on.)

7. My life is too complicated right now.

1. Let's just be friends.

Hehe. I've gotten all of the above. A few years ago I'd get depressed from lame rejection lines. But at some point I realized best policy is to simply move "on to the next one" smiley

@Eko Ile: Some good points you raise. . . but I still want a poll smiley

Comparing Lagos and Rivers, well Lagos is performing similarly on these HDI metrics, yet has a far smaller per capita budget. So I'm not sure that Amaechi is doing any better. Certainly you can imagine how Fashola would perform in Rivers with the same exact budget, but far less obligations.

I don't know much about Enugu and Akwa Ibom. . . don't have family there like I have in Lagos and Rivers. So cannot say much about either.

The food I make tastes pretty good, but isn't anything fancy. Once in a while I'll make a salad + BBQed ribs + mashed potatoes, things like that. But usually it is spaghetti, baked chicken bosom, stir-fried rice, chili, things like that that don't take much time to make.

^-- There is that Canback State GDP database which both Wikipedia and the BBC (which sourced from Wikipedia) used. But some of the #s on that list are screwy, at least to me.

I wish the CBN would publish something official and reliable. . . I can easily find the GDP of Bavaria from the German government; why can't I do the same for the Nigerian states? undecided

Anyway, you are probably right. . . Sokoto probably does a good job of extracting money from those industries. Would be nice if all states can do the same.
Politics › Re: Nigeria: Igr (internally Generated Revenue) - Lagos, Sokoto Lead The Way by ektbear: 6:30am On May 01, 2011
^-- Are you implicitly assuming that high IGR is a sign of higher GDP too? Like, Sokoto is amongst one of the more productive states economically?

I'm not sure that we can conclude that from the IGR figures alone.

Politics › Re: Tribalistic And Falseful Saharareporter And 234next? by ektbear: 6:00am On May 01, 2011
I think this is just dancing around with terminology, really.

Whatever Yoruba is, whether you want to call it ethnicity, nationality, whatever, it is a group that can be joined. It isn't defined purely on genetics (we've got people with genetics from Hausa, Fulani, Edo, different Fon groups, etc.), but on shared culture. . .  just like "white American" is defined primarily by shared culture.

Anyway, I don't know enough about Dele Giwa to say how he views himself. But it is certainly possible for ties to grow very strong with a group you were not born into.
Politics › Re: Tribalistic And Falseful Saharareporter And 234next? by ektbear: 5:39am On May 01, 2011
Even the group called Ekiti. My distant paternal ancestor was from somewhere else in Yorubaland.

Am I Ekiti? Or the group he was from?
Politics › Re: Tribalistic And Falseful Saharareporter And 234next? by ektbear: 5:31am On May 01, 2011
PhysicsMHD:
1. Yeah, you can't join an ethnicity. It's different from a nationality.
Fine, so maybe I'm using "ethnicity" to describe what should be described as "nationality." In that case,it is just a terminology issue. Yoruba is then both an ethnicity and nationality.

2. White American is not an ethnic group or cultural group.
What term would you use to describe them, as a group? Nationality, then?

3. African American should not really be considered an ethnicity, but it's a distinct cultural and historically defined group which you can't just join just by imitating them
No, but you can join AA within one generation. If I end up settling here permanently, then my kids will probably considered by most to be AA.

French is a nationality, and Nicolas Sarkozy is 100% a man of the French nationality. His Hungarian and Jewish origins cannot rule him out as French just as Alexandre Dumas' African ancestry does not make him non-French.
So be it. Then Yoruba is a nationality as well.

You really love silly arguments, yet there you were a couple of posts back, having to google what is grown in Sokoto from a total foreigners point of view. Bloody laughable!!

Dude, you need to know your yard and your identity so you don't keep arguing like a simpleton. . .By the way, bigots tend to be simple minded anyway. grin
Hrm. As someone else said previously on this forum, what I'm doing right now is comparable with trying to reason with my toothpaste. I shouldn't waste my time on people who are too stvpid to understand what is being said.

Politics › Re: Tribalistic And Falseful Saharareporter And 234next? by ektbear: 5:11am On May 01, 2011
Is Nicolas Sarkozy French, to you? Would you consider him a Frenchman?

This is why I'm wondering how you define ethnicity.
Politics › Re: Tribalistic And Falseful Saharareporter And 234next? by ektbear: 5:07am On May 01, 2011
PhysicsMHD:
Well, you're entitled to your definition, but I'm pretty sure most of the rest of the world view Yoruba as an ethnic group.
How are you defining ethnicity here?

Are you defining it in a way such that it is impossible for outsiders to join?

If so, what do you consider the groups "white American" and say "African-American". . . would you call them a race, ethnicity, cultural group. . . ?
Politics › Re: Nigeria: Igr (internally Generated Revenue) - Lagos, Sokoto Lead The Way by ektbear: 4:54am On May 01, 2011
@Beaf: There seems to be a very simple concept you are not getting here.

This thread is about internally generated revenue for different states. A man from Nigeria who has lived there all his life but who is an illiterate farmer probably doesn't know what this # is. . . or possibly even care. Yet any of those reading this thread know what the #s are, simply by looking at that table from the CBN site I posted.

Here is a list of things:
A) being on the ground in Nigeria
B) Being born in naija and having lived there your entire life
C) The price of tea in China
D) That the Heat are playing the Celtics tomorrow

All of them are completely irrelevant to this thread's topic. None will help in knowing what the IGR #s are.

If you still are too simple-minded to get the above, then there is really nothing I can do for you.

Yeah, but camels don't really get emaciated. They store fat in that hump and then leech off it when they are out of food and water. They are also just really tough animals to begin with so they survive well with very little. For a camel to become emaciated would require extremely unusual circumstances.
Right. But their humps are not entirely gone; are still visible on those camels in that tourist photo. But you are probably right; I shouldn't use the state of the camels to say anything about the rest of the animals.

Also, I was under the impression that Sokoto state did not have much real vegetation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokoto_State

They can't even grow crops.
No, from that article, looks like they grow crops:
The region's lifeline for growing crops is the floodplains of the Sokoto-Rima river system (see Sokoto River), which are covered with rich alluvial soil. For the rest, the general dryness of the region allows for few crops, millet perhaps being the most abundant, complemented by rice, corn, other cereals and beans. Apart from tomatoes few vegetables grow in the region. The low variety of foodstuffs available has resulted in the relatively dull local cuisine.
I wonder how much (if anything) they import.

So Is that dry brown grass found in the savanna area what their cows eat? And if that stuff is acceptable for cows, how much of it is there in Sokoto?

You're probably right that that isn't a representative picture because I googled around and found this:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2541/4277948963_b006753b96.jpg

http://www.flickr.com/photos/73542590@N00/4277948963/

But it doesn't resolve the question, as this picture only reinforces the idea that Sokoto is a barren area.
Yeah, I dunno what the deal is. Perhaps Jarus (youth service in Sokoto) or namfav (lives in Sokoto, iirc) can explain. . . something funny seems to be going on here.
Politics › Re: Tribalistic And Falseful Saharareporter And 234next? by ektbear: 4:28am On May 01, 2011
@PhysicsMHD: For me, Yoruba isn't a race, like most people's conception of white, black, asian.

It is an ethnic group. . . a group of people who share a culture. Sort of like how American identity isn't really racial/tribal/etc, but more shared culture and values.

People are free to enter and leave ethnic/cultural groups, in my opinion.

You don't have to be from one of those sub-groups to be Yoruba. Certainly, at least a few of these Saro returnees didn't know much about those sub-groups.
