I thought you said Van gaal forced him out?

Does this statement look like it? Van gaal didn't just give him assurance and told him to fight for his spot, just like he did to Kagawa and Chicharito.

There's no way Nani would have fit into 3-5-2 tactic because that was the tactic Van gaal deployed at first. He had to cater to the needs of RVP and Rooney for the front 2 and Mata as the creative midfielder unfortunately, he realised both the ageing Rooney and Rvp are too sluggish to operate as the front 2 while Mata is more of a SS than a playmaker and Herrera is just too shite to operate in the role.

A harsh lesson I would say.

Funny enough most of all the aforementioned players are still in the team except Rvp.
That is asking him to look for a club. Gaal sold Nani. Chikena!

Even after his first year from loan, he didn't give him any chance to return.

The other thing is, that 3-5-2 is the worst thing to happen to United.

No wonder. At a point I was wondering if that fool Sadiq was the person leading our attack from the beginning. The DM was very clueless. He looked the opposite of what DMs are known for. He couldnt pass, couldn't snap into tackles, no footy brain. Our full-backs were not left out from the public show of football shame especially that Shehu. How that boy ended up on a football pitch remains a mystery.

As for Sadiq, the less said the better. I've never seen a striker so worthless as him. Even with his height, no aerial threat, no speed, no passion, no agility, zero skills. In short, his stupidity is out of the human realm. If there's justice in this world, whichever club that signs or even calls him for trials should be nuked!!

"He [Van Gaal] told me that, if I wanted to stay to fight for a position, then good but I would not be his first option or maybe even the second," Nani said.

"I said: 'No. I have been here for many years, I have been very important to this club and I think it's time to decide.' I wanted to play every game in the starting XI."

For close to 7 years, I rarely watch any of our national teams' matches coz they cause more havoc than bliss to my tender heart. So after all the good news about these guys, I decided to give them a chance and watch them last night, and true to my beliefs, they showcased one of the most useless and timid displays the entire universe have ever witnessed. Before 70th minute I've slept off twice. It felt like dêjá vu; like I was watching a United side under LVG's era. SMH!!

They were a shadow of themselves and lacked purpose. They missed two of their best players. The DM, Azubuike, picked a needless third yellow card in the tournament late in the quarter final match when we were 2-0 up. And that meant he missed the semi final. He was very impressive with good shield to the defence coupled with a great ability to pass swiftly between lines while making himself available for return passes. Also a great dribbler with pace and energy to cover ground. My hope was that we win so that he returns for the final. His replacement, the number 15 jersey, was just average.

We missed Etebo who scored four goals in the first match but got injured in the last group match. His pace and agility is superb.

Where on earth did we get that Sadiq (number 13 jersey man) from? He carried his laziness from the quarter final into the semi final.

I think we didn’t have a good bench. Then we didn’t know how to fight from behind because we always score first in the games we won. The Germans also didnt allow us use the wings which was part of our strength, that is where we needed a good player who could pass or drive between the lines. May be it is where we missed Azubuike most.

The main point is we hardly created a lot similar to City's performance and the emphasis was on the goals scored.

Also, Bournemouth was as poor as Sunderland. At least, Sunderland parked the bus vs City unlike Bournemouth.
You have forgotten that Mourinho has his tactics. His first priority is to make his team compact at the back to make it difficult to break down or concede goals. The midfielders and wingers play deep most of the time to protect the defence.

So you cannot compare City's approach to ours. It is scoreline that matters to Mourinho, not pressing possession or pressing the opposition.

Bournemouth was a weak opponent though.

Did you see Valencia cross before Martial mishit? The opposition defender already got the ball off Valencia and instead of booting it off if he didn't have the confidence of keeping it under control, he had to lose it again to Valencia.

That was 2 mistakes leading to just 1 goal, apart from
the mistake that led to the first goal.

BTW, I had to comment on our performance because someone was mocking how City scored vs Sunderland.
You only see negatives.

What about Valencia's pull back to Mata, then Mata to Rooney that should have been a goal had Rooney not miscued the shot?

Between Bournemouth and Sunderland, which was a weaker opponent?

Clear cut chances could lead to tap in goals though. That's why we have poachers in the game.

That's why players who does a lot than just poaching in the goal wouldn't be called out.

That's exactly what Torres did vs Barca. He made a lot of effort to ensure ''a sure'' goal by dribbling the keeper in order to face an empty net and that's no tap in but in Rooney case, the keeper could have kept it out on any other day and he could have let in as well however the main fact is that it was easy for Rooney in that position under no pressure.

Just to say, my main point from the start was that we hardly create a lot in the game and we had to depend on Martial mishit leading to a "tap in", Ibra brilliance and a mistake from the opponent.
What was the scoreline in that Bournemouth vs Manchester United match, and what was the scoreline in the rest league games? Did you know Chelsea won from an outside the box effort from Costa? City from an own goal?

You know I could have stated 'Rooney header' in my first post? But I want to emphasise what I thought about the goal and for me, it was an easy goal which depended a lot on Martial mis-hit shot.

Still what I think it is.
Rooney's goal was from a clear cut chance. But not a tap in.

Someone like you would call Torres goal a tap in when he dribbled the goalkeeper when Chelsea beat Barca. Or when a striker intercepts a back pass, then dribble the goalkeeper, you would call it a tap in.

There is a difference between goal from clear cut chance and a tap in goal. Tap in = just roll it across the goal line with nothing on the way.

Secondly, Mata was inside the first box whereas Rooney was in the second.

Let's not even talk about the situation involved, which is closer?

And lol at looping header!
Rooney was in the second box, then counted about three steps to the edge of the first box.

If Rooney had even scored from 19 yards without anyone in goal, I could call that a tap in. But with someone to beat, it is never a tap in.

One fact is defenders were on Mata's neck and he was further from the goal unlike Rooney who was near the gaol and stationary with a lucky shot close to his head under no pressure. How is that the same?
All these are now stories. Tell me since when tap in is defined by stories. The two were simply not tap ins. A tap in is simply when one can roll the ball across the goal line without opposition/goalkeeper. E.g Keane's goals against Wigan.

...........
But the truth here is that Mata was unmarked. If he stopped the ball, he would be caught though, same in Rooney's case. They needed to shoot and beat the goalkeeper. I can also show you even closer range goals from Bervatov but will not pass as tap ins.

How is that the same with Rooney?

Mata was onrushing to the ball after starting the move and a defender was even distracting him before his scissor/overhead kick compared to a stationary Rooney with a mishit shot close to his head with no pressure whatsoever? Haba!
Tap in has nothing to do with the build up. Mata scored from close range and was alone in that place. He had shot before the defender arrived.

Most tap ins are scored by players on rushing. Even when Keam received from Mata, he was on rushing.

In my own, a close range goal is a tap in.

In fact, I tends to credit players who scored close range goals under obstruction from the opposition defender a lot more. Why did you think people often try to degrade some of Ronaldo's goals?

Using your logic, this beautiful Mata goal vs Liverpool is a tap in.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuC5byQH7WA

Same way too with some Bervatov beautiful finish from close range. I am not even to mention Chicharito or Inzaghi who score from close range. Mr Kagawa10, it is only when there is no opposition to beat (including the goalkeeper) that you can begin to talk of tap in.

You no know ball.

Also, not only open goal are tap in situation, a goalkeeper could be there as well.

BTW Rooney was free in that particular situation. In fact, over free dey worry am there.
In my opinion, tap ins are when you need to just roll the ball across the goal line. Like Keane did with Mata's pass.

Stop making me laugh. That was a tap in goal. He wasn't under any pressure nor obstruction unlike those who jumped to head in goals. The mishit shot was close to his head and he was close to the goal post, all he had to do was to nod the ball in.
Rooney was leveled with a defender, although unmarked. The fact that there was a keeper to beat makes it not a tap in goal my opinion.

That header could easily be missed. Some might have headed straight to the goalkeeper or even wide. You have to know how to use the head very well to be able to head that ball with the amount of curling it needed to go into the net avoiding the Keeper's reach.

My thinking about this Rooney’s stuff and our number 10 position. If Rooney got dropped, I see Mourning favouring Herrera in that position over Mata and Mkhitaryan. Mourinho said his number 10 should be able to defend too, and he said he preferred Oscar over Hazard in the number 10.

I think Herrera will likely play more like Oscar than the other two. Oscar has a great ability to retract and he is a great marker and a wokerholic. Herrera appears to have these characteristics too. But the low point is that Herrera has not been able to shine when given the number role in successive games. We saw that again last season when Rooney was injured and Herrera was being dispossessed easily.

Ibrahimovic will score goals if we get the ball into the box frequently. It looks like our current wingers are not doing that enough, may be for now.

Lol!

You didn't explain whether Rooney goal na tap in or not.

What's tap in the first place? An easy goal.

Those ya friends, eh?
In the sense we have used tap-in here, it is not a tap in. We always refer to tap in in respect of goals scored with just a touch required to roll the ball across the goal line. It is assumed the goalkeeper is beaten and the strike requires no skill, direction, power. Just a soft roll into the net like we had in our first goal of the pre-season when Mata passed to Keane to tap-in.

Rooney’s goal required effort and skill to beat the goalkeeper. Effort is the jump and appying force to the ball. Skill is directing the ball away from the goalkeeper diving lenght and making sure it doesn't go wide (when the ball hits the ground). There is a curling applied to that header.

Hmmm, after the first round of matches, we got the best result but we were the most unimpressive among the top teams. Even Arsenal looked to move the ball better and attack better. But I remember 2007/2008 season and I think even 2008/2009 we were boring in attack in the beginning of the season, and SAF kept saying things will improve. And we improved. It was in 2006/2007 and 2011/2012 we got off the block the most impressive way.

The good thing now is that we got the result, but I need to watch more of our opening matches to understand how we might perform this season.

I honestly don't know what you're cherry-picking at instead of answering my question. Rooney was losing possession in the midfield and the final third(or attacking third before you get confused again) and there's the last third(defense). These are the different thirds on the pitch i meant but you just needed an explanation from me because you thought i didn't know i was saying and would've been glad to prove me wrong. grin

Now answer my question.
It doesn't matter where you lost possession, as long as you lost it is almost same implication. The worst possession lost of the match was even Depay who lost it at the edge of our box, even though he lost it once. Rooney never lost it in dangerous areas.

The only thing I prove to you is that Rooney had same number of unsuccessful touches as Mata, the unsuccessful touch you complained about. And he only put four or five passes wrong.

It's good that you yourself don realise say this your former excuse na very moot one..

We are being linked with a new CB, Jones is being frozen outta the squad and you are here talking about Competition.

How come the manager seems uninterested in the "Maldini-esque" performances Jones put in before his injury?

Indirectly, Jones would only get his chance when one of our CB flops - meaning that Mourihno probably sees the unreliable Jones as a weak, overpatched spare tyre.. grin grin

Phil Jones is a liability to the team!

By that time, Jones would probably be getting nutmegged in the U21 league as usual (all in a bid to regain fitness).....that's if he hasn't been loaned out to a club in the championship.
What you typed didn't make sense to me. Not a logical response to my comment.

Anyway, it is normal coaches start the season with what they perceived is their best team. Lingard would have started on the right over Mata and Mkhitaryan if not for his injury. But we know that can change in the long run. Even Ashley Young can have his chance.

Jones is a super star defender. Even if he goes to another club he will prove his worth again as he did in 2011/2012 season.

Luke Shaw has no real competition for the left back wing. He was our best player last season until his injury.

As for Jones, the season is just starting. Many things will still happen, so your premature hate is useless. Mourinho is one who changes his centre back at the slightest cases of successive errors. Remember how Cahil became the darling at Chelsea and soon we saw Zuoma.

When we play such teams like West Ham, Liverpool, Man City, Stoke, etc, without Fellaini, we can begin to judge the defensive abilities of such players like Blind and others.

Valencia played as a winger in that period & he was one of the most useless players in the side - his woeful performances summed up the disastrous season we had under Moyes. In his pathetic attempts to cross the ball, Have you forgotten how he targeted the feet of opposing LB's with high precision ?

P.s : in which calabash did you see martial as a Utd player in 2013/2014 grin

Ever since he was converted to to RB, he has been impressive & a good number of peeps here have acknowledged the positives he brings to the team.

Even at that, I make bold to say that no right-thinking Pundit would advocate that Valencia be restored to his default position (as a winger).

YOU BE EKWE SAMPLE

The argument about Valencia's ability as a right back started in 2013/2014 under Moyes. People were here blaming Valencia for some of the goals we conceded when he played as a tight back under Moyes. Valencia played as a right back and as a winger under Moyes.

Even before Moyes, Valencia had played as a right back under SAF. Rafael was injured and Valencia was played behind Nani of a long time. Under Gaal, Valencia played as a right back and wing back from the start. You be olodo.

Now tell me where I said Martial was with us in 2013/2014. Are you talking from your dreams?

Valencia has been consistent in our right back, particularly under SAF and Gaal. When we have gone on a run of good results, Valencia was one of those fit and flying. Same way he returned from injury to help to finish the FA cup victory last season. With a man down, it was only Valencia who could have raced down the field to play a dangerous ball into the box from which Lingard scored the rebound.

Bros when a player reverts from an attacking position to a defensive one like valencia did, it is usually due to the fact that they had failed to deliver in their original position( for example rooneys failed attempts at trying to go and hide in midfield)!

Valencia is not, was never meant to be and is currently struggling to do a job at right back!
