raumdeuter: When did Man Utd have owners? And the debt he was paying, what did they use the money borrowed to do? I will try to respond to this much later tonight. I haven't the answers readily available and I am busy now. But what you always forget is the circumstances surrounding SAF building United in his early years. Where he picked the team from. Then how he gradually built it to be strongest in England, then how he gradually pushed the team to be able to compete with star studded teams like AC Milan, Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona which had the best legs from South America, Europe and Africa. |

raumdeuter: Man Utd under fergie 26yrs
2 trophies, 2 runner up 3 semi final knockouts
That means Ferguson made semi finals and beyond just 7 times in 20yrs coaching the richest team in the world with unrestricted authority To me UCL semi final is not an easy achievement. Before Premier League was rebranded in 1992, it was far below Seria A, Laliga, Netherland, French and Belgium league in terms of bringing/attracting foreign players. If we look at things from that angle, we could see that English teams were just to complete the numbers between 1986 and and mid 1990s when SAF just took over. Considering the kind of qualities such teams like Madrid, Barca, AC Milan, Juventus, Ajax, etc already had in foreign players. SAF even took over a team that was relegation haunted in a league that was not opened to foreign players. It was always going to take time to build a team that could compete with the European quality sides with world best stars. ........... FOREIGN PLAYERS At the inception of the Premier League in 1992/93, just 11 players named in the starting line-ups for the first round of matches were 'foreign' (players hailing from outside of the United Kingdom or Republic ofIreland).
By 2000/01, the number of foreign players participating in the Premier League was 36 per cent.
In the 2004/05 season the figure had increased to 45 per cent. On December 26, 1999, Chelsea became the first Premier League side to field an entirely foreign starting line-up, and on February 14, 2005, Arsenal were the first to name a completely foreign 16-man squad for a match. |

For over 20yrs Man utd has been one of the richest teams in Europe
I still saw a Delloite money report in 1998 that has Man Utd as the richest team in the world You can be richest in terms of Assets. But when you have compulsory debt servicing without commensurate income to balance your P&L account you could be running into financial problems if you spend wrecklessly. |

Consider that Man Utd was one of the richest clubs in Europe. Most of the time countries had 1 or 2 participants In Europe how many tier 1 and 2 football nation say 7. So Man Utd is one of 14 clubs who would compete every season
If I am given a team who has the riches of Man Utd and the type of free hand Fergie has. In 20yrs I would win more than 4 CL You saw only riches but forgot the debts. |

1. Ronnie McFall, Portadown FC (Northern Ireland).
29 years still counting. Employed same year as SAF
(2) Arsène Wenger, Arsenal FC (England)

(3) Thomas Schaaf, SV Werder Bremen (Germany)
14 years at Werder Bremen first team.

What stopped him from spending like others? Did barca spend more money in luring player than utd during that era? Barca did few marquee signings, in few seasons.
Absolutely nothing stopped fergie from been a Lord in europe. He ought to have been the manage to have bagged home loads of European trophies.

If Ferguson had coached Barcelona, Real Madrid, he would have won nothing less than 6 UCL with the spending power of these clubs in luring the world best stars over the years. Same with AC Milan and Juventus.
If United spent even spent nearly what other big European clubs spent, SAF would have won at least 6 UCL.
If Rafael was not prematurely sent off in 2010 we had a team that was going to conquer Europe again.
Between 2008 and 2011 SAF played 3 UCL finals in four years and Barca with their great team stood between SAF and the cup. No team could beat Barca in the final. Our chance could have been in 2010 but two soft red cards to Rafael prevented us.
SAF also won in Europe with Aberdeen.

Jaypea98: I dint know why ,but Memphis in a united shirt has never looked like a quick player , In PSV he was a genius Scoring goals anyhow. He no longer scores those freekicks anymore ,nor does he score from outside the box like he used to. He seems to have heavy thoughts in his head whenever he gets the ball and gets easily frustrated when dispossessed of it. I sincerely hope he is able to at least breach Douglas Costa 's heights sometime soon. He doesn't also mark/tackle. |

I said Valencia would serve us better there after Val came on for him as a substitute. Then another match Val played and carried the ball forward with great balance while interchanging passes with Mata, I concluded that if Val has some aerial ability to deal with crosses I would prefer him as our Right Back. Dadehmola: A few weeks ago, Martial was on fire....scoring at will and providing assists.
His form excited everyone (including me Ofcourse) but at the same time, I was apprehensive because we were actually looking up to a 19year old (who should still be adjusting to the rigors of the EPL, new team mates, life in England etc) for Miracles.
It may seem a bit too early to judge (and I sincerely hope I'm wrong on this) but the Martial I have seen in the last 2 games looks tired & burned out. If this is the case (I seriously hope otherwise), then we might have to brace ourselves up for ;
• An attack worse than the toothless and blunt one presently on show (In the top 8, our attack is only better than that of crystal palace as we speak)
• Subliminal shots at Martial by the dreaded English press...leading to unnecessary pressure on the young lad, which could have devastating effects on his growth & development.
TBH, I never liked the "New Henry" blahblahblah jargons - we all know what such comparisons have done to some talented "up & coming" players & the ultimate prayer is that he doesn't tow that line.
I hope Martial's Cool-headed nature bails us out of this potential mess The only reason our attack was better yesterday than Wednesday was because Ashley Young went forward. Possession football is not bad but you need quick legs once you go into the opposition half. Otherwise they will recover, regroup to defend in numbers. Memphis is quick but he doesn't have good football sense. Memphis is actually quicker than Martial on a long distance. Martial quickness and acceleration is on a short distance. If we have one midfielder who can play fast, two pacing and dribbling wingers, we will enjoy this Luiz Van Gaal's philosophy. |

If we had Valencia instead of Darmian we would have pressed better and won the game easily. The ability to burst forward is very important. You need to utilize the space in front of you before the opponent regroup.
If we get a player like Alaba or Alves to run the line, we will threaten far more.

Even Garry Neville is calling for a match winner. ...................... He said: "If you put two more players into Manchester United's team, say a Gareth Bale or a Cristiano Ronaldo into that team, that team could win the league. Because the structure that is being built at this moment in time is solid. "But they need that match-winner, that Neymar, that Luis Suarez, the one that is going to light up a game and score one or two goals to take it away, then all of a sudden they would look like a Barcelona, because they're dominating possession, making teams look foolish. "Even in the last 15 minutes, they didn't fully commit to winning the game. Historically, you would like to see punch after punch, you would want to see bodies being thrown forward, but you might get caught on the counter attack and lose 2-1 that way. "But that's not the way in which this Manchester United team play, and the heart wants them to go forward, commit players and be reckless in some ways. "I do think they are quite close when I think about it with my head, but my heart thinks I'd like to see them die trying a little bit more and go for it. Neville. |

Btw they've played against Arsenal and got battered 5-2 I can't really blame Gaal. We went into the battle with only one defender with the capability to match their speed and aggression. It stalled our forward thinking somewhat. Young had to keep falling back to cover up. |

codedguy1: I am not surprised you are more concerned about Rooney than the way the team is faring!
One or two games without rooney will not give a true picture of what the potential of the team should be.
There are other things that affect the team, but let's just see how it goes without Rooney, for me the philosophy is the major problem though.
But I will always add that since the team is amongst the top 4teams with marginal diff in points Lvg can boast of doing something right.
Micheal Owens said when he looks at United he does not feel they will/can win the prem, but they are somehow doing something right to be where they are. I feel the same way.
We should remember the EPL is a marathon, people still expect that leicester will still finish 6th - 8th. The team is not going to fair any differently when Rooney is not there. Is going to be a mixture of hot and cold. If we want consistency, we get Rooney into gear. Today is is worst game since CSKA but his team mates are also problem. They are all too slow. They can't even orchestrate a swift counter. I saw a video of United 5 best counters last season. It's in YouTube. Rooney was in virtually all of them. Di Maria the next player. Moreover his performance are blown out of proportion. Rooney played for England against Italy and France and he was playing for fun. Against Italy he was the second best player after Carrick. The woodwork and superb performance of Buffon prevented him several times. Harry Kane looked like a learner in the two striker formation. Against France, he was the best player in my opinion. He and Alli. Free movement of the forwards allowed him space to operate. But in United the team mates are not like Val, Nani, Giggs etc. Even when Rooney manages to make run, they don't spot it. We have played without Rooney before. We also played without him today for a good period. I didn't see any improvement. It's like all the space suddenly vanished.
