Van Gaal was somewhat incapacitated. No: Valencia Jones Herrera We can add Shaw. .......................... The goal we conceded was totally avoidable. I keep missing Nani. His ability to beat an opponent with ease in the final third and open up a wide space in front of him helped us in games like this. |
Weedtaker, you are obessed with playing only creative players. Yes, they won 6 matches last season but they also lost us three straight matches the first time since 20 to 30 years. Mata, Herrera, Blind, Young were all there when Chelsea beat us 1-0. Everton beat us 3-0 West Brom beat us 1-0 at Old Trafford. Even Fellaini was there. I think the major thing that won us those matches was a perfect structure from defence to attack and not necessarily the combination of many creative players. As soon as injuries set in, the creative players couldn't hold. Some of these players were there when we drew 0-0 at Cambridge. |
nyabinghi: Oh! Is this the issue? Kean was only saying Rooney was as culpable as others. Possibly he wanted Rooney to have done far more. But Rooney was our best player in the first half. There's no debating that. Forward play and good passes to his co-attackers. In the second half we lost the midfield completely and even when our midfielders managed to have the ball, they pass it just in our half as the opposition regrouped. Whenever we ventured forward we lost the ball before it got to Rooney or Martial. So Rooney had to drop to try to help the midfield but he didn't do a good job there as he lacked pace and power in the second half. I thought perhaps he got tired as he just returned from an illness with little training. If Herrera were around he could have come in from 65th minute. As for Paul Mearson, he has a point. Rooney in all his career had played with running team mates like Ronaldo, Tevez, Nani, Young, Valencia, Giggs, etc. Even Nistelrooy and Saha were not short of speed. With everyone running there was so much space and little worry about possession and pass accuracy. This was why Rooney was the only one who gelled with Di Maria last season. But these days we have a lot of technical players. It could be hard to blend all the players. When Kagawa arrived, such players like Nani started having problems. May be it's similar thing happening to Ronaldo since Di Maria departed. |
AdeLaNa1:What's this about? |
AdeLaNa1:I am loking at the kind of personnel that should be hired. |
parrotibaba:Not exactly so. ........ “Attacking wise, they just don’t look a threat, they don’t look good enough, they don’t look like they can score goals,” the former United midfielder told BT Sport. “Martial, for me, he’s still got a lot to prove goalscoring wise, he isn’t a centre-forward where he lives for goals, he likes to play outside of the box, he likes to drift to the left wing, he doesn’t look like he’s bothered if he misses a chance, he doesn’t look bothered if he scores a goal, where as a centre-forward, all you live for is scoring goals. He doesn’t look that type of player to me, and maybe Manchester United need to go into the transfer market for one of them.” |
weedtaker:When Schweinsteiger went out no ball was going to attack and Rooney dropped deep later on to try to help the midfield. But he could not use speed and energy to cover the grounds in his front when he got the ball. If he had the kind of energy he used against Watford he would have wrecked havoc. I wonder if he got tired as he has not trained until Tuesday. This is why we need players with different ability to change game when need arises. I think even Herrera could have given us something if he came late on, but the yeye injuries plaguing us. |
sinizia:Someone told me yesterday that this is the kind of game Maria would have utilized the gaps in midfield. I remember when we played Leverkusen. Jones and Giggs in midfield. Leverkusen appeared to have an upper hand. But Jones wins the ball and passed to Nani or Giggs. You needed to see the quickest of ball transition. Nani was particularly delightful, he dropped very deep. Once he received a pass, voom off he goes with it to the final third before you could pronounce NANI. Val and Nani were in the wings and it was a typical Manchester United attacking display, great counter attacking play particularly. |
chrisley024:This is why we need variety of players. Players with different attributes. Towards the end of the game, PSV came out but we didn't have a player to run with the ball utilizing the gaps. |
weedtaker:I think Mata and Herrera have lined up behind a striker this season. But Herrera is injured now. It looks to me Mata plays better if Val is the one behind him. Who has a return date for our injured players? |
Anderson of 2008 would have made fun of that midfield yesterday with amount of space left wide open to penetrate with bursting forward runs. It's surprising a young man like Sneiderlin cannot travel with the ball even 20 yards. We need variety of players for different occasions not only those who can pass. Even Ashley Young would have utilized those spaces, not to talk of Valencia. Imagine, Smalling became our Ramirez yesterday. Except he's limited once he gets close to the final third. |
chrisley024:We were able to beat CSKA because Carrick sensed the urgency of time running out, then he was going for more direct risky passes instead of normal passes. He looked up, spotted Lingard movement and he dropped the ball behind the defender in the box. Talk about experience. |
tess1:I think you are right. The other time he came on, we still had one of Carrick, Schweinsteiger or Herrera on the pitch. |
weedtaker:Last season we went on winning streak twice. One in December and another towards the end of the season. The second one was like this: 4-14-1 --------------DDG Val - Smalling - Jones - Blind --------------Carrick Mata - Herrera - Fellaini - Young --------------Rooney. We played a high line defence and pushed forward to ensure sustained pressure. When we attack we had only Smalling and Jones as defenders with Jones doubling up as a sweeper in the vacuum in the left back as Blind pushed forward to form a triangle with Young and Fellaini. Valencia's pace meant he could quickly recover to help the thin defence. Another triangle is formed on the right with Val, Herrera and Mata. Passes were intelligent as we hardly lost possession. Rooney acting as a hold up striker and dragging the Centre Backs away. It's a different formation now and with different players. I think the problem started when Carrick and Jones got injured same week we were to face Chelsea. Our back lost its solidity and midfield lost its structure. Around December we went on a run too when the beat Arsenal at Emirate and Liverpool at Anfield. We went many matches unbeaten. But Di Maria was part of it. We used different formations. Also Rooney and Van Persie. Rooney playing either in central midfield or number 10 behind two strikers. One thing about these two periods was that Valencia played a vital role in stabilizing our ball retention, giving a shield to the thin back line with his ability to retract quickly, and helping to provide some bursting forward while drawing one or two players away from Mata and Herrera. |
Chestar5:A big hug. |
tess1:But Fellaini always did well when he came on for Schweinsteiger, yesterday was just an exception. There was no way Gaal would know Fellaini would not improve us. |
Fussbot is always peeping after every match. You be robot? |
weedtaker:The cut back pass was not the only contribution, some other good moves made by Rooney were stalled in the feet of Lingard and Memphis their poor decision making and amateurish football. Martial efforts were poor. He used to spread his body and then force the keeper to step while he picks the opposite angle. This time he shot straight with little confidence like the occasion was bigger than him. His decision to pass twice or thrice instead of shooting were unlike him. It's not always good to criticize your best player so as not to kill his confidence but your analysis was wrong. |
Dadehmola:I am just tired of the whole thing. If we play like this against Leicester we will be beaten badly. That's a ruthless team when they attack and very clinical in finishing. |
Ashley Young should start every of our game. We need some energy and speeding play into the final third. Memphis has speed but he doesn't know when to pass or when to go solo. I need Val to be well to slot to our right back in Germany. But it's like it's a long term injury. Those blistering runs down the right side, carrying the ball with so much balance swiftly into the final third is needed. If we had approached our UCL games with speed our results would have been better. When we beat Leverkusen in Germany, it was down to one thing, we were faster than them in transiting the ball from defence to attack. They controlled the game but we destabilized them with our speed. |
Dadehmola:Memphis? |
Fellaini was the one who could have made the difference. Before last night, every time he came on for Schweinsteiger he improved our midfield. He brought more energy, better ball retention, ball holding and more mobility, but last night everything died on his feet. He couldn't tackle, couldn't control the ball, couldn't hold the ball, couldn't pass. When a player sent in to lift the spirit becomes so poor, then nothing good was going to come out. |
Chestar5:It's in Germany. |
weedtaker:Rooney did everything for the lads, particularly in the first half. His cut back to Martial was a big chance but I don't know why he decided to pass to Lingard instead of shooting. He was guilty of that three times. Passing instead of shooting and he is our best bet to get a goal. The Martial who won EPL player of the month in September would have gotten two goals last night. Lingard was the one who missed clearest chances. Sometimes these things happen, but for you to exonerate the culprits and put the blame on another is weird. Gaal blamed these two guys for missed chances so don't shift blame. |
Pass pass pass pass 15 minutes gone. Pass pass pass pass pass pass 30 minutes gone. Pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass Half time. .. Complete the rest. |
ElFenomeno1:You are happy an EPL team might go out? When I was supporting you guys. |
But I honestly think Fellaini can play better than he did today. Is he not match fit? I wonder why Gaal doesn't give instructions during matches. Sometimes players need direction. When Schweinsteiger left we lacked any direction. |
chrisley024:That's where we missed Herrera. We were also useless in winning the ball back. We allowed them to pass the ball between players easily. They won lose balls better. I still think the major problem was inability to carry the ball forward quickly. |
We need players who can carry the ball down the field from the wings and in the middle. Passing doesn't always work. I miss Nani. Darmian offers nothing going forward. It looks like we sold Rafael, Nani and Welbeck too prematurely. |
This is unacceptable. What a weak performance. We moved the ball too slowly and ate up the whole first half when we should have won the game. Depay had no single positive contribution. The substitutions weren't bad on the surface, except Fellaini was woeful. He couldn't even control with his chest. Our pattern made it easy for PSV because we played a simple passing game and they outplayed us to it in the second half. I wondered how Young did not start. The only player who could have given us urgency in the first half. This team cannot win in Germany. We need Young, Herrera to start there and everyone to give 100%. I wish we could even get Valencia back, and also Jones. Our players appeared not to know the importance of what winning this match tonight. I am disappointed. My prayer was that EPL put four teams in the knockout stage. |
Odunharry:Dem too dey yab Rooney. Sometimes dem dey over do am. In fact many times. When e don too much, I go bring my koboko come out and bilala the ogbanje commot for their yeye brainwashed heads. For here when someone sabi curse Rooney na be say e don sabi football be that. If them wan do like say dem sabi something dem go dey shout £300k £300k like say dem contribute one penny or even like say Rooney no deserve am. If Ronaldo stayed with us as we beg am reach na he for dem take like £400K and Rooney like 250k. Even De Gea wan take off even say we dey beg am with £220k. Pogba same thing. But Rooney listened to us collected only £250K even though City be wan give am £300 in 2010. In EPL na only Rooney sell shirt pass Beckham. Dem know not what Rooney don offer United in both field service, image and revenue. Dem dey yarnopata. Ekwe Samples. |
Odunharry:So who was quoting me. A ghost? |
