afrodoc2:Not about Rooney Vs Costa for me either. All the strikers you mentioned, there is no one who had had a bad time for their clubs and were given a long time to get back. Except Neymar. Benzema a needed two three seasons to be even a a good striker. He was just a step ahead of Higuain. |
Before our game against West Brom, I read on this thread that Rooney's game against CSKA was a fluke that he would be shyte to his usual shyte self in the next game. Rooney performed far even better. Instead to hope for a new dawn, he is being completely written off. On this thread, it gives people ecstasy to say Rooney is finished no matter the situation on ground. Thank God this is not Old Trafford. Chikena! |
afrodoc2:The only thing you are missing is that you don't know why the coaches do what they do. How many games did it take Lewandowski to blend and start scoring for Bayern. Suarez needed about a dozen games too. All the players Rooney played with are gone and this is like blending a new. New style, possession and technicality instead of our usual run, speed, push, attack, attack, counter attack. |
Rooney has 14 goals in all competitions. Costa has 10. Costa played only as 9. Rooney played DM, CM, AM, FW. Costa played in a better team for a longer period. |
afrodoc2:Costa has not earned the respect to be given time to resurrect. Moreover, he can only play one position. He is a specialist who must perform in his one role. Rooney needs to be re - specialized on a position after many years of sacrificing for the club. It looks like behind the striker is actually his best position. Where he has played in the last two games. And where he played mostly for SAF. |
Diego Costa, an out and out striker, one of Europe most prolific strikers has 9 league goals in 2015. 10 goals in all club competitions. Sky has not fallen. |
SailorXY:All these are stories. You don't know any better than Van Gaal and Sir Alex Ferguson. Moreover, Van Persie and Falcao were given much longer time to either pass or fail last season. Before the season kicked off, the whole media was after Rooney, their aggression on Gaal's refusal to buy a new striker was transferred to Rooney. |
SIRcumalot:I am not even saying anything of praise. I am giving some points like a situation report on his gradual improvement. And he really showed energy in his last game. I said he needs to add confidence to that. His confidence is currently shattered. Anything bad in this? |
AdeLaNa1:Oga please don't give Rooney time. |
Many of una no know ball. Why I dey even dey waste my time. |
AdeLaNa1:You don't know what it means to bring a player to fitness. My statements would be understood by any intelligent being. Sometimes if you force fitness, you get a hamstring or a muscle injury and you go back to square one. If someone like Rooney should go to injury for a month, it means he will need another four months to get to where is is now. |
The last two games, we can see Rooney is doing things he refused to do in all previous games. He is jumping now - jumping higher, he is running faster and longer, he is shooting more, he is not just tackling but chasing back and wining them. He is passing better. His control and take downs are better. He's playing more direct and even confronting defenders with direct runs. Now he has to boost his confidence. Sometimes I wonder if he were told to stretch his muscles less in previous games. I wonder how suddenly he played more with energy in the last one week, particularly the last game. It looks like the managers knew something we didn't know. Hence they kept faith and tried to bring him to fitness. I wish he continues even better and start scoring.

When Gaal came, everyone had to start afresh. Although there were records before his arrival and he knew what he wanted. He had a preseason where Rooney was the tournament best player even with European biggest football teams participating. Welbeck outperformed Chicharito. Lingard also performed greatly, in fact Lingard has been great in last three preseasons. The season started and the manager gave Chicha a start and he was still poor. Lingard was unlucky as he suffered injury. Welbeck came and showed he was more useful than Chicharito. We had Rooney, Van Persie, Wilson Chicharito, Welbeck as strikers. Lingard Winger/striker. 6 strikers but none was firing as expected. Gaal brought Falcao, a tested striker, then he decided to give a second chance to Chicharito, Welbeck who were not even up to Rooney and RVP, by sending them on loan. Welbeck refused a loan move, he opted for outright departure. At the end the manager analyzed all his strikers both on ground and on loan. He retained Rooney and Wilson only. Rooney for his holding balance and playing ability while Wilson probably for his pace and for future development. Gaal made it clear that he was mostly rewarding players who helped in the successive wins in the run in and got a top four finish. We gained consistency in scoring the very moment Van Persie got injured and Falcao relegated to the bench while on the other hand Rooney was moved to the top. It was easily evident Rooney had the best ball balance in the danger zone because before then our strikers were bullied off the ball by defenders or in some occasions they fell to the ground on their own for no reason. It's not like Gaal did not try everything else before he took his decision. Last season we put many balls into the box from crosses but they were easily delt with by opposing defenders. Falcao only scored one and that was the end for us. We will need ball playing strikers more than poachers in the system. Poachers will give us short one. They will touch the ball only 18 times in a match. and they will mostly be bullied off it. |
SailorXY:Past two years was a bridge period. The time we needed to put ourselves together in the post Ferguson era. Just a few successive goals he will be back. His energy has returned. His confidence still needs to improve. |
nyabinghi: Rooney has been our top scorer in the last two seasons, and he is mostly likely to end our top scorer baring injuries. Under Moyes despite being injured and playing many minutes in the deep he ended top of our scorers chart. He was also was highest in Asists. SAF is backing him to get into gear this season. Apart from Martial he is still most likely to get us goals. A proven player is a proven player. |
The number 9 is the victim of wingless system with slow build up. Not every 9 will thrive under this system. Poachers will fail. Only ball playing 9 can manage to thrive. Look at when United us building, when we get the ball across the centre line even to final third, the number 9 is almost isolated in front of the box tucked between centre defenders. On the maximum we have two players there but always outnumbered greatly. The wingers are far off from the box area. Full backs and wingers marrying the touch line. In comparison, Arsenal and City get 5 or 6 players speedily encircle the opposition penalty box, with even three inside once they push forward into the final third. This is not to mean that I am criticizing our system though. It's a good system as we have started to move the ball faster. With world class wingers we will be just fine. |

Chicharito would be lost in United team of today. Where will he get the crosses to poach? Those days of speeding wingers like Nani, Valencia, Young, Giggs getting behind the defence line or tearing defence to piece before they regroup are gone. Counter attacks are not existence. We are even talking like Chicha didn't play for us in the last 3 years. He and Rooney started the 3-5-2 and he was never good. Then Welbeck was brought in. Welbeck did better in the system. Even Wilson looked better than Chicha in the philosophy. |
Football is luck sometimes. Moyes mistake at United was his reluctant to spend except he got world class players. Fellaini was bought just to satisfy the fans. With low budget he tried with Everton. Since he left, Everton is now struggling to find a place in Europa. As for Sociedad, the team was relegation bound last season but for his intervention. Just almost as he met Everton but Everton gave him more time to turn things around. |
AdeLaNa1:I am not interested in debates. |
StarBoard:His career is an on going process. Sometimes football is luck. |
Mata is not playing in the wing because of Rooney. Januzaj, Herrera, Fellaini have all played in the number 10 while Mata was in the wing. When Rooney was number 9, Mata was in the wing. If I said this statement in two years from now, I would be said to be protective of Rooney with make up stories because most people would have forgotten. |
AdeLaNa1:DSTV has always aired all the tournaments until this year. All - World cup, age grade world cups for both men and women, Copa America, Euro, Afcon, etc. This year, we couldn't get some to watch on DSTV and some of us are getting tired. |
dopeJemi:I guess you missed first half. He played Schweinsteiger through, a very intelligent pass. He gave a good final pass to Mata. Don't forget we were up against a team that played 8 men behind the ball. He has improved very well, may be he's coming back to his old self. |
It's was a good game from the start. We really passed the ball fast and controlled the game in the first half. We were a bit disjointed after our first goal, but it was still fine. We pulled out a RB who could go forward and brought in another who can not really go forward, even though we were in control. The threat from West Brom was from the left side so Young should have stayed. The second goal came at the right time when West Brown were asking serious questions. First time we are going on intention break with a win. |
This is a wrong game and scoreline to give debut to a young player. |
dopeJemi:He tried today na. Could be said to be his best game. Mostly first half. |
I don't understand this substitution. |
Leyqute:Rooney was in the hole against CSKA until Martial went out. |
Cristiano Ronaldo's mum reveals she attempted to abort him but he survived. Ronaldo usually joke with her "you didn't want me but I am here helping everybody" |
Lekkie073, See the TV line up and formation provided by Eufa. Just like opta sometimes does, Eufa got it wrong. All four attacking positions were wrong. These are some of the things I try to explain but many people don't even listen. Mostly the new members here. Opta does get it wrong many times too. The bad thing is when opta gets it wrong, all the websites and media who source from opta end up getting it wrong. Whoscored have recently been trying. They now make adjustments in most cases when the match is on based on real match/action formation. But they are still not 100% accurate. Sometimes we played diamond last season, they gave a different formation, sometimes we played one man upfront and one behind, they created two strikers situation, etc etc.
