SIR ALEX FERGUSON REVEALS HIS BIGGEST MISTAKE AT MAN UTD The Scot believes his decision to announce his retirement at the start of the 2001-02 season had a major impact on the mentality of his staff and players Sir Alex Ferguson admits one of his biggest mistakes at Manchester United was revealing that he would retire in 2002 before the season had finished. The Scot subsequently reversed his decision to call time on his reign at Old Trafford but eventually retired in 2013 having won 38 trophies with the club. “It's important to listen to your staff. In 2005, that period we didn't win anything, just before that I had an attempted retirement, and I think that affected everyone,” Ferguson told ESPN. “It was a mistake, and my wife and my three sons changed my attitude towards it and I started to think. “The biggest mistake I made was announcing it at the start of the [2001-02] season, and I think a lot of them had put their tools away; they thought, 'Oh, the manager's leaving,' but when I changed my mind in the January, I started thinking about United again and how we could get back on top. “After that is when [Wayne] Rooney and [Cristiano] Ronaldo came to the club and we had to regenerate everyone. The youth side of it, the scouts; we'd gone to sleep. Strangely enough, the period from there on has been glorious; it's been fantastic with the numbers of league titles we won. “The moments you don't win anything register very strongly with Manchester United.” http://m.goal.com/s/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2015/10/15/16334552/sir-alex-ferguson-reveals-his-biggest-mistake-at-man-utd?utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fm.facebook.com%2F Possibly the same reason we went low after he departed. It was hard to come to terms with reality. We will need 'new Ronaldo' and 'new Rooney' to take us back to top. Martial might be one already. Can Memphis be the second? |
AdeLaNa1:Nevertheless, to win 10/10 is not easy. Conceded just three. In the past some top teams were handed similar easy group or even much easier, and they couldn't get maximum points. Remember too, this England team has not lost a match even in friendly. Only one draw so far, against Italy in Italian soil. |
Conceded only three goals.
|
airmark:Dissallowed goal. Nani got his head on it on the line and he was offside. Nani na Falconet's Ayila. |
SIRcumalot:I don't see what Neymar or Suarez will do or perform again that they can even reach 80% of Messi. Ronaldo even far outperformed Neymar and Suarez. You also forget the voting will be done this month or latest next month. |
SIRcumalot:Messi should be awarded the Ballon D'or already. |
Aguero suffered grade 2 tear and will be out for about 2 months. |
AdeLaNa1:This was the best penalty. |
Sneiderlin should be the first choice. With plenty games, his passing will improve. Gaal doesn't think of how to stop the opposition, all he wants is how to control the game. |
chrisley024:Judging from comments on goal.com wall and other commentaries/reports, he played right wing. |
GBR1:OK . I couldn't watch. |
Five star Antonio Valencia tore Argentina to shred in a world cup qualifying match played in Buenos Aires. Argentina 0 Ecuador 2 - goal.com news flash.

AdeLaNa1:This is a narrow escape. It's not a good penalty. Pls can I see Tevez's penalty? That his movement alone was enough to confuse the goalkeeper. |

chrisley024:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/11916281/Ravel-Morrison-Manchester-United-gave-me-too-many-chances.html I always trusted Ferguson. This is why I don't think anything about Pogba. Ferguson and United can't bow to players. Just look at how everyone tried to bring this guy's mind home but he was an Ekwe Sample. |
There are too many gifs on this thread. What are we to learn from these gifs? Several gifs about Depay, it doesn't make sense. |

MrLouisVanGaal1:But against Arsenal playing under coach Moyes, these guys held their own. Even Di Maria held his own against Arsenal. Arsenal will always rush you, but you need to clog the midfield, sit deep and finish them with pacing forwards. |
Leyqute:When we had Welbeck and Nani running our wings against pacing sides we were never disgraced. Those days you could press Man United but once the ball got to the feet of Valencia, Nani, Welbeck we were out of danger and already setting off a counter attack. The opposition would be the ones struggling. |
I am beginning to think we should have kept Danny Welbeck. This passing game is not always going to work. There will be days you need the strength, athleticism and pace of some players. I missed players like Nani. |
If Van Gaal would learn from this, then it's not all bad. There should be a balance in selection even if the philosophy is to take control of possession. |
tess1:Luke Shaw is tall, Physical and pacing. So he was a good cover for Blind's weakness. Darmian on that side is still better than Young there. |
Another way to nullify Arsenal is to pack the midfield with plenty bodies. 4-3-3 or 4-5-1. |
Van Gaal got it wrong in selection. Most of us saw it as soon as the line up was released. You assess your opponent to create your first eleven. The first point of weakness was midfield of Carrick and Schweinsteiger against pacing Arsenal players. When you put Young in left back, Mata in front of Darmian, then you create a team not balanced to match Arsenal pace and strength. Darmian lost every contest against Sanchez. We also know Blind lacks pace and strength. He is a technical player with sense and passing intelligence. The best place and probably only place for him is left back. I won't recommend him in midfield. If we had Valencia starting in the right back for us yesterday, we surely would have done far better. Schneiderlin should be starting against such teams as Arsenal, West Ham and every team that have players who can run. We didn't try to nullify Arsenal pace and we paid for it. Valencia, Jones, Scheneideline would have done us a decent job yesterday. De Pay refusal to put his body on a 50-50 ball in a dangerous area got Arsenal their first goal. Martial is the only one we can count on week in week out. Mata also try giving his best always but against pacing teams there is nothing much he can do if he doesn't have strong men playing behind him. |
funlord:Why do you like trouble? If Rooney is not playing well, can't you discuss him and his game without provoking elampiro to respond? |

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he never made a move for Anthony Martial this summer because Monaco told him the forward was not sale. The 19-year-old completed a £36m move to Manchester United on deadline day - a deal which could potentially rise to £58m - and has made a great start to life at Old Trafford scoring four goals in his first four matches. Wenger, who admits he has tracked Martial since his early days with Lyon, could not believe that the Ligue 1 outfit sold the French internati "The amount of money was massive. I believe that you could think that, if you are Monaco, you could have sold him as well next season. "So I thought they would not sell him this year because they sold many other players. "I thought they would maintain their word. He was not sellable. He was not on the list. He was one of the players Monaco did not want to sell, so we never made an approach for him. "Only an acceptable amount of money after could do it. We always liked him, even when he was in Lyons." http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/10015430/arsene-wenger-arsenal-made-no-move-to-sign-man-utd-forward-anthony-martial .......... Another reason the money went up. He was not 'sellable' |
The only reason Martial money went high was because many clubs were in. Seven months before, Arsene Wenger was hoping to sign him for less than 5 million. When Spurs indicated their interest, they were ready to offer nearly 20 million. Then reports said even clubs like Barca showed interest. |
Imaginations are bad sometimes. |
Question : You’ve already taken one record off Sir Bobby! Do you believe that you will go on to become Manchester United’s top goalscorer of all time by beating his tally of 249 goals for the club? Response : It’s uncanny really how our careers have mirrored each other’s for both club & country . Sir Bobby scored 49 in 106 games and scored 249 goals in 758 appearances. Neither of us would be considered as out and out centre forwards or strikers, But the resemblance ends there as Sir Bobby Charlton is probably the most important player this country has ever produced. Even to have got so close to his club record is unbelievable. -Rooney in interview published today. ................ Some old arguments comes to mind, particularly as regard his position for The Three Lions. |
GBR1:Wetin inside this link? Hope no be virus you wan send to me? |
LTSHANGY:This is why I don't criticize the amount of money used to buy a player or join in the school of thought that our transfer activities are not well managed. When we lost Pedro, I was among the few who thought the club did not fail in the process. I said it was probably what they wanted. When Martial came, the price never bothered me. When I saw his clip, I was reassured he will suit us, particularly helping us with what has been missing in our attack. In a nutshell, sometimes we err in our criticism when we do not have all the information surrounding the circumstance of transfer negotiations. |
