Nigeria has been identified as one of the top five countries for growth acceleration for 2018. Other countries in the group include Kuwait, Oman, Kazakhstan and Tunisia.

The Global Chief Economist at Renaissance Capital, Charles Robertson, who made this forecast in a report titled: “Africa 2017,” urged investors to take advantage of the opportunities in these countries.

“These are some of the markets I think investors should be considering because of the growth acceleration story,” he explained.

According to Robertson, Nigeria still has a very positive demography, pointing out that the country’s working age population has been growing at 15 per cent over the past five years.

The global analysts observed: “Nigeria’s Ease of Doing Business is presently at 169th in the world. But I am promising you that it is going to get considerably better in the next 12 months. This government has actually started to reform.

“They have slashed the time to register a new business from 10 days to two days. I think as you get the Ease of Doing Business better, you should also see some improvement in corruption ranking. It is never going to be dramatic. We do know President Buhari has tried to make some difference.”

He also noted that there has been improvement in Nigeria’s legal system.

Robertson also argued that at its present rate, the naira exchange rate is expensive as the official rate. He called for a currency reform in Nigeria, arguing that, “currency pegs don’t work in countries with low per capita income. The naira is either too weak or too strong.”

Nigeria’s budget and forex reserves depend on the performance of crude oil. Oil has been on an upward trend in the last 12 months.

“But my view is that shale would keep it down. What I think drives oil is China. When China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was booming, we had oil price shooting up, but when China’s GDP stopped rising last year, the oil price was down. There should be some recovery, I would argue, in the next few years. If there is one thing which worries me today, it is Chinese loan growth.

“I still think there is a story here which is working. The story is that the last time oil fell, which was in the 80s, GDP in Nigeria fell by over 10 per cent, not just once, but multiple times throughout the decade.

“But in the 90s, when oil prices were low, Nigeria was not even in recession. But this time, it fell by 1.5 per cent last year, which was a much better performance than in the past. The human capital has changed, not just in,” he said.

CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele recently predicted that with economic policies put in place by the Nigerian government, the country should be out of recession by the third quarter of the year. Emefiele who assured that the CBN would continue with its intervention in the foreign exchange market, noted that interventions of the apex bank so far had been yielding positive results.

The legislature last week passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill for the year, with an increment of N143 billion to N7.441 trillion, from the executive’s proposal of N7.298, five months after President Muhammadu Buhari submitted the federal government’s spending bill. Faced with pressure from the public, which remained unrelenting for years, and in keeping with its promise this year to do so, the National Assembly, on Thursday, finally released a 33-page document detailing the line-by-line expenditure of its budget for 2017. The National Assembly’s budget was increased by N10 billion to N125 billion, from the N115 billion proposed by the executive.

Under its budget, N85.8 billion was assigned to total overhead costs, N23.7 billion for personnel costs and N14.9 billion for capital projects.

The mainstream of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP aligned to the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee, NCC is set to trigger the alternative option for political survival by fusing into the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance, APDA. 

The APDA according to news reports on Friday was one of five political associations that got the nod of the Election and Party Monitoring Department of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to formalise its registration with the Commission.

Sunday Vanguard sources disclosed that the move to proceed with the new option follows continuing damage the lingering leadership dispute with the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff led leadership of the PDP was causing those of them attached to the Makarfi faction. Last Thursday’s decision of the Supreme Court to defer hearing on the case to May 25, Sunday Vanguard learnt may have been the final trigger to unveil the APDA as the alternative for the mainstream of the party inclined to the Makarfi group.

Sources close to those behind the move told Sunday Vanguard that all the major organs of the party are in league with the plan. To strengthen the base of the party, some smaller parties who have recently had interactions with the Prof. Jerry Gana-Strategy Review and Inter Party led committee are also to fuse into the APDA.

It was gathered that those behind it want the party to be fully involved in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State coming up later in the year.

The interim national chairman of the association as it is technically defined is Mallam Kabir Shittu, a member of the PDP Rescue Group and former chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC. The interim national secretary is Dr. Emeka Okengwu.

APDA, Sunday Vanguard learnt, was one of three political associations promoted by some PDP chieftains who refused to align with Sheriff and it is said to have received the backing of some of the governors.

Party officials and candidates according to provisions of the constitution are to be elected at ward levels through electronic voting and results collated at the national level.

Section 126 of the Constitution as submitted to INEC regulating primary elections of the party states thus:

Conduct of Primaries for Elections for all elective positions in the Party shall be by Direct Primaries through elections where all registered members of the party who are in good financial standing with regards to the payment of their dues and levies shall be eligible to vote and may freely vote for any aspirant of their choice at the ward level using the Electronic Open Secret Balloting System.

The party is also set to introduce an innovation in the country’s political system as it would be the first to incorporate the doctrine of first refusal for a second term for an elected president or governor on the platform of the party serving in the first term. However, such a president or governor according to the provision of the constitution would, however, still be ratified by party members voting across the country at the ward levels through electronic means. Sunday Vanguard gathered that some party elders including Prof. Gana were originally inclined to the PDP fusing with the PRP or the SDP, but many others thought otherwise and that APDA should be formed to become an amalgamation of many existing political parties.

The party which spells out zoning between the south and north in the production of president and national chairman also stipulates that the office of governor as produced by the party shall rotate among the three senatorial zones.

The party which has as its slogan “APDA – Stronger Together” according to the manifesto shall promote as its ideology a social democracy philosophy.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday confirmed the appointment of world-famous Jelani Aliyu reputed to be the designer of the Chevrolet Volt as the director-general of the Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC).

Jelani Aliyu currently works with popular vehicle manufacturer, General Motors (GM) where he has worked since 1997.

Aliyu’s invention, the Chevrolet Volt, a battery-powered, extended range passenger vehicle was in the past described as GM’s “most electrifying advanced technologically advanced vehicle.”

Jelani Aliyu has picked up many awards for his invention and in January 2014, the United States Environmental Protection Agency voted the Chevrolet Volt as the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the market.

As DG of the NADDC, Jelani Aliyu will be responsible for the review and implementation of Nigeria’s automotive industry development policy. A previous policy covering the period from 2013 to 2015 appeared to have laid the foundation for the growth of local vehicle assembly plants in the country.

An indigenous vehicle manufacturer, Innoson Motors is believed to be one of many testaments to the automotive policy about which not much has been said in recent times.

As exciting as it appears to have Mr Jelani Aliyu head the Nigerian automotive council, it remains to be seen if he would be eager to leave his position at GM for the quite uncertain terrain of a Nigerian agency where decision making is bound to be affected by political interests.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied an allegation that he received $200m from the $1.3bn Malabu oil deal.

Jonathan, who stated this in a statement by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, on Tuesday, described a story published by Buzzfeed as false.

He said that it was sponsored by those who were threatened by his rising profile in the international community, adding that the story was meant to tarnish his image.



The former President said, “It is one more in the series of fake news sponsored by those threatened by Dr. Jonathan’s continuously rising profile in the international community.

“Commonsense should have shown the purveyors of this slander that the Malabu oil deal far predated the Jonathan regime and it would only make sense for him to be bribed if he had a time machine to go back in time to when the deal was struck.”

According to Jonathan, the report relied on hearsay evidence from a man, who provided no substance to back up his false claim.

He said, “The man quoted by the report said he ‘assumed’ that Dr. Jonathan would be bribed.”

The former President wondered how the assumption of a man could be enough to smear the reputation of a patriot and international statesman of his calibre.

“The report also wrongly claimed that ‘Jonathan and Etete’ had known each other for years, according to Shell staff, when Jonathan served as a tutor to Etete’s children while he was a minister.”

He said that the claim was clearly ridiculous, adding that nothing could be further from the truth.

The statement said, “In the first place, the former President couldn’t have been a ‘tutor’ to Etete’s children without first establishing a contact with the family. This is because Jonathan met Etete, who served as the Petroleum Minister in Gen. (Sani) Abacha’s military regime for the first time under the succeeding civilian administration, when he was already the deputy governor of Bayelsa State. Even then, the fact remains that ex-President Jonathan has never met any of Etete’s children.

“Jonathan could not have been anybody’s private tutor during that period because he was already in the directorate cadre in the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission, (now NDDC), having already left the academics, at the time Etete was a serving minister.”

He said that the latest allegation came after the publication of a story that he refused to help the British Government in rescuing the Chibok girls.

The former President noted that the British Government had denied the story.

He also cited a publication that he planned to contest the 2019 election as another lie.

The statement added, “It is instructive that this same old fable apparently intended to rubbish Jonathan’s name locally and internationally is being recycled with more lies added to garnish the narrative, at a time the ex-President is making efforts to resolve the issues in the Peoples Democratic Party.

“Again, let us point out for clarity and for the umpteenth time that while he was in office and now that he is out of office, former President Jonathan did not open and does not own any bank account, aircraft or real estate outside Nigeria. Anyone with contrary information is challenged to publicly publish
