landis: Again what are you doing to get the money back? I don't think it is my duty to ask my country to give money that was legally deposited in our banks by your Nigerian thieves.
Maybe the Nigerian government can not provide assurances to the British about how the money will be used. . . Any guesses about what happen to the money the Swiss returned? |

landis: And what exactly are you doing to get it back? And what are you doing to counteract the Nigerian thieves that put loot into UK banks in the first place? How do you plan to get back all the loot stored in Swiss banks by Nigerian thieves including Abacha himself. Swiss banks have a code of conduct and so you haven't a hope in hell of getting that back but just asking since you seem adamant. |

kadman: Am I supposed to care that you think someone who resorted to abuse in the first instance because they had nothing intelligent to say is allegedly smarter and articulate than myself Please! As I always say if one can dish it out then be prepared to eat it up and that thing should be eating a whole truck load of shit for all the spiteful comments they constantly like to spew on these boards when faced with a differing opinion! That being said the only disgrace on here is the fact that you actually think that the female dog actually has some sense! landis: The joke is is that even if all those things were returned Nigerian still wouldn't be better off. All the artifacts would probably end up in some governor's house. Abacha's millions would be split among the Nigerian senators as would profit from the slave trade and the Nigerian thieves would probably bribe someone in government to let them off scot free to continue thieving! pafun: I need to get a life, lol! You start a thread about 'ugly britain' and when someone responds in good faith your cronies resort to personal abuse like your life has been rejected from the earth. I just don't get it with you Nigerians, if someone started a thread about ugly Lagos and showed all of that no one would blame you for being defensive. Understandably it is your homeland and so patriotism is to be expected. But for some warped reason you think it is ok to sound off about other countries and then expect citizens of those countries to not come out and explain why they disagree with you. Now you are making it sound as though this was all done in jest when you know good and well that you stated in your initial post that this was payback for all the negative stories in the British press about Nigeria. Fair enough you are entitled to your views as am I, just be mature enough to handle them. Yes poverty exists everywhere and no one has denied that. You did, however state that the British press only showed the positive stories about themselves and I proved you wrong by posting a link from the BBC about poverty in the UK. In fact most negative stories about Britain will have come from the British media so so much for your theory. I regularly read the Nigerian press and while they criticise Yar Adua a lot, there are no stories about the regular man on the street, how he struggles to get by day by day without having the basic infrastructure to help him along. When a pipeline blasts occurs in Nigeria and kills thousands, who reports it first? the Nigerian or foreign press? When the election was taking place in Nigeria last year were there any articles about what the hopes and dreams of the common man in Nigeria expected of their country in the Nigerian press?? No . . .but they were in abundance on the BBC website. I live by what I wrote in my siggie; However don't for one minute think that because of that I am going to sit back and take personal abuse for simply responding to a post because of what I state in my siggie. |

Well this last trip was just a short one. We flew in from New Zealand , stopped over for just two days and stayed at an airport hotel before catching a flight home to London. We hired a car but only got as far as Beverley Hills, Rodeo Drive to be exact before my friend fell ill and had to be driven back to the hotel. After that I spent the short time there shopping for bargains at TJmaxx, Marshalls and Ross. I am a self confessed shopoholic so don't hold that against me.lol! , On previous trips to LA though, I have been all over LA and it's surrounding areas, my sister used to live in Redondo Beach which was handy. Been to Hollywood, drove all the way up to the hills, saw the beautiful houses in Beverley hills, had light lunch at the Beverley Hills Hotel, Century city, Compton, Church and Soul Food in Crenshaw, Orange County, Glendale,Venice Beach , Disneyland and universal city etc. I have also been to San Diego where we drove into Mexico. It is always fun in LA. People always seem to be so friendly, helpful, respectful and pleasant in that part of the country and it is hard at times to believe that crime ever takes place over there. |

ikeyman00: It doesn't bother me much at all, but as I stated I didn't see the point in this thread seen as the poster's main aim for posting such pics was because he felt that the foreign press only focused on negatives on Nigeria and only showed their positive of their own. I was responding because I didn't agree and was not aware that that was not allowed. kadman: Ah right. . . I don't know where in my post you sensed paranoia and I also didn't realise that it was supposed to a funny thread. Maybe the poster should have added a disclaimer of some sorts as I am not in the mind reading business and so can only most times take what I read on here at face value and not do some analysis to decide whether a thread is in jest or not especially when the words are clearly stating something else. If you can then good for you! pafun: First of, I am not a 'sir' What in your world is a 'real' citizen? So now if I am to understand your reasoning correctly the foreign press should only be allowed to go to places like VI and such areas to take pictures of Nigerians who have somehow managed to make it despite putting up with an incompetent government even though they are the minority? How does that help the regular common man in Nigeria. . .? Why wouldn't they show the swamps of the Niger delta? My family are directly from that region with several relatives still living there. I have no qualms whatsoever because I have been there and that is exactly how it is. This is the part of Nigeria that basically subsidises the whole of the country with their rich oil lands yet one wouldn't know from looking at it. My people in that region of Nigeria regularly suffer without a decent water system, non-existent power supply, poor security, no basic health facilities and bad roads plus the threat of armed attacks and yet the Nigerian press doesn't feel the need to highlight the plight of the good people of that region but I am supposed to get some sort of pleasure out of a few pictures of crackheads and drug addicts in Britain in payback for showing the truth about Nigeria? Maybe your people live it up in Abuja or in the rich areas of Lagos and you would rather the global world see this minority but again how does that benefit the common man on the streets of Lagos? Who speaks for the poor man and his family who are unceremoniously thrown out of his swamp dwellings by Fashola in order to build houses and flashy apartments that only the rich minority of Nigeria can afford? I don't know about you but to me those foreign articles that show Nigeria how it really is, is in a way a positive because then at least the poor people living in squalid conditions, suffering and smiling under the injustice that their own government that has meted out to them somehow get a look in. As I said the Nigerian press is not concerned about highlighting the plight of these good people to the the world and so the foreign press might as well do it. At least then world organisations such as the UN will be able to pressure the Nigerian government to step up and take action instead of allowing them to get away scot free with looting the countries wealth for their own personal benefit while Nigerians live in squalor and struggle to get by every day. You may ask what I, a person of Nigerian, of descent is doing to help . . .Well I am not a government official and I do help in small ways as I as an individual can manage but I have always felt that any major contribution that I will ever make will be to highlight the real state of Nigeria to all and sundry. brushing it under the carpet and crying foul every time a true but negative story is shown in the press about the country is in my book is only enabling the corruption and incompetence that the Nigerian government has become so known for to go ahead unnoticed. You may feel that the best way to counteract it is to throw a wobbly and show pictures of poor Britain but as I said I don't see the point as the British press do not tend to hide the bad and the not so right in their society or go on the defensive like Nigerians do. It is all there to see in black and white on their websites no bars held. The streets of Britain are far from paved in gold, but it still trumps Nigeria with all her oil and wealth and many Nigerians know that that is why they are at the UK embassy now risking arm and leg to get a visa. Whether you like it or not Nigeria is a very troubled giant of Africa at 48 with absolutely no idea on how to make her oil money benefit all Nigerians and it looks like it will forever remain in that state until someone in Nigeria starts speaking up for the whole of Nigeria and not just the rich. kadman: Britishland?, Nigerialand?, whatever just don't make an ass of yourself by trying to tell me which sites to visit on the internet. The fact still remains that Nigeria is still light years behind the Uk and the rest of the developed world. Nigeria with other countries such as Singapore, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Good ol' USA among others were all colonies of Great Britain at some point, yet Nigeria is the only country that hasn't moved forward since 1960, with nearly half the population lining up outside foreign embassies as we speak trying to get visas. Pitiful! Ask yourself why instead of posting carefully selective pictures of the UK in a pitiful attempt to somehow prove that Nigeria's non-existent infrastructure can somehow match up to that in the UK, the first industrialised and developed nation in the world. comparing London's tube system, the first such transport system in the world to Lagos broken down bus system is a complete piss take! |

A mean about the majority of the Nigerians in Nigeria living in squalor and not about how one governor or the other chop money or throw one owambe like that Also posting pics of crack heads whose problems are mostly self-inflicted is simply a smack in the face to the real people living in poverty in Britain not like you care anyway. You complain about negative stories about Nigerians in the foreign press but what are the Nigerian press doing to appease this problem that you speak of? @Poster I don't see the point of this thread. If anyone wants to really see the ugly side of Britain then all they really need to do is to go onto the BBC and other UK sites such as The Sun and the Guardian. Nobody hides anything here in the UK rather the tendency of the press here is to expose all the uglies in society rather than hide it. The BBC have a whole section on their website dedicated to poverty in the UK. Why don't the Nigerian press or people do the same instead of trying to brush all under the carpet and going on the defensive when the foreign press reports on one of the many constant negative stories coming out of Nigeria. Why doesn't a Nigerian website have a dedicate a section on the majority of individuals living below the breadline instead of crying fowl whenever such scenes are broadcast around the world. What are they trying to hide? The question to be asked is why do Nigerians always go on the defensive when the ills of their society are exposed? Why all the cries about foreign press only focusing on the ill's of Nigerian society when the Nigerian press themselves hardly ever report anything good about it themselves? I would like to add that if it weren't for the foreign press such as the BBC and CNN half of you guys would not even know what was going on in Nigeria. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/business/2005/breadline_britain/default.stm |

N-joy: Typical Nigerian warped mentality! If white workers are allowed to get away with that kind of attitude in the Nigerian workplace then whose fault is it? Point in case: Poster has chosen to work in the UK and that kind of attitude that you have described is not accepted here. A person like that in a professional UK working environment will only be deemed as weird, unsociable and unable to fit in with the team which will get them nowhere fast except at the back of the dole queue begging for handouts! lepashandi: I would like to think that any self respecting black person who takes on a job which will involve working in a multi-ethnic/cultural environment would not always be on that pathetic political tip about proving how 'black' they are, so much so that they feel absolutely no need to try and be fit in with the team that have been allocated/applied to work with. If one would rather the culture of a working environment where only their work speaks for them and gets them promoted (not in the Nigerian workplace where nepotism is rife!) then perhaps they should stay out of the UK workplace where they won't have to bother with things like team bonding activities and social mingling with their peers. It is that simple…besides the last time I checked white people weren't queuing up at the Nigerian embassy in their tens of thousands trying to get a visa to work in Nigeria. |

@Damiso Sounds more like a personality clash than anything. Maybe they think you are a snob because you don't go to the pub with them or on coffee/tea breaks and stuff. Whatever the case try not to play victim in all of this and continue to make strides to get on with your colleagues as you say you have been doing and that, believe you me, will prove more beneficial in the long run. The UK workplace is very different from the Nigerian in that a lot of emphasis is also put on how well you interact with colleagues and contribute to the team, whether that be socially or work wise, as well as how you perform in your role. Unfortunately drinking is a culture traditionally ingrained in most Britons, most kids mark their first age of independence (16) by having a drink but there are still plenty of people who would not hold anything against someone like yourself or I who did not touch the stuff and so it is ok to socialise with them every now and again just to team bond if anything. If you are seen as someone who can let their hair down and have a laugh then you should be fine, accent has nothing to do with it. It is not unheard of for men who can hardly speak English in the UK bond very well with other English men over a game of football and a pint or even a can of coke if necessary. |

damiso: Well you did say that you were against going to pubs because of religious beliefs. What I was trying to put across to you was that the pub was not just a drinking environment in this day and age where even some churches have been known to gather and that one doesn’t have to drink alcohol. They also serve very good lunches and dinners and are good hang out joints during lunch breaks. I would consider myself teetotal and I readily go the pub with colleagues to hang out and socialise after work and sometimes have lunch there without a drop of alcohol passing my lips. Drinking during the working day or coming into work drunk is absolutely forbidden by my employer and random breath tests are often carried out. Still, plenty of my colleagues often go to a popular pub near the office for lunch…are they going there to drink? Point being there is nothing wrong with socialising with your colleagues in a Pub of all places. Furthermore team bonding in the UK workplace is extremely important and a manager couldn’t care less if when downsizing their team that a particular person happened to get on well with the guys from Finance or HR. If you don’t get on well with fellow team members and you are seen as someone who is a ‘weirdo’ (your word) then that could well go against you in the future. You started this thread claiming that some people in your work place may have issues with your accent and then went on about how you even spoke perfect English… By whose standards is your English perfect? The UK or Nigeria? |
Travel / Re: Your Accent:do You Think It Makes People Judge You Unfairly? by EloSela(f): 2:59pm On Sep 17, 2008 |
@damiso Well if you really want to progress in the UK workforce then you need to let lose and mingle. Just because you don't drink it doesn't mean that you can't go to the pub and have a soft drink or lunch with your colleagues or take coffee/tea breaks with them. The Pub is not the equivalent of a beer parlour in Nigeria but more a place for social community gathering where even some Churches and religious meetings can be held. One also doesn’t have to drink alcohol contrary to popular belief. The Pub is an age old cultural UK thing that you may want to embrace and learn more about instead of shunning it because of religious values. Making yourself exclusive from your colleagues will do you no favours in the long run because when it comes to downsizing the department or workforce the people who normally get the boot first are those who don’t ‘fit in’ with the rest of the team regardless of skills or ability! If you feel that people have trouble understanding your accent then try to work on it a bit more. Even though you say you can speak perfect English it may not be perfect English to their ears as they are probably used to words being used and put together differently as opposed to how they are said or put together in Nigeria. For instance we don’t ask people if they have ‘taken’ food etc. Not saying that you would say this but just to give you an example. There are plenty of perfect English speaking people in Nigeria but I am sure that many of them would have a hard time understanding a person speaking the Queen’s English with a clipped accent. My accent could be described as a South London one but when I went to Nigeria for the first time I was laughed at and corrected all the time by people who thought they spoke the ‘best’ English when they were way of base! Anyway don’t take it to heart that people have trouble trying to understand you, as someone said try some elocution lessons. Lastly speaking good English in England is not generally seen as a big deal over here in terms of status or money. Yes people are impressed when they hear one speaking with a clipped Queen’s accent but at the same time there are plenty of people who speak a local form of English such as Mancunian. Liverpudian and those with Yorkshire, Brumie or Welsh accents who work place outside of their local areas they get along fine and yes plenty of black people have those accents too! |

@Tpia Gambia and Senegal were one and the same before the British decided that they wanted Gambia back from the French. Hence the reason why there are there are now Anglophones in Gambia and Francophones in Senegal who are from the same indigenous groups with the same language, culture and customs. I know a few Cameroonians and Furthermore are you saying that all the Anglophones in Cameroon were Nigerians? |
Politics / Re: Can I Get Deported From Nigeria? by EloSela(f): 7:40pm On Sep 01, 2008 |
dudu-bobo: What does one benefit from being an Nigerian as opposed to a Cameroonian? tpia: Bull! These people still have their indigenous languages to communicate in. It is much the same scenario in Gambia and Senegal where there are Anglophones and Francophones living side by side on the border but still communicating in the native languages. (wolof) I even know a Gambian that has several close family members who just happen to be Senegalese because of the borders were split down their countries and divided between the British and French. Those Bakassi people should stay where they are joh! I personally would never give up my ancestral land because of some borders drawn up by colonials. My family are from the Delta region of Nigeria and I have always thought that if such a scenario were to happen to us where a centuries old treaty popped up saying that our lands were actually part of another country and not Nigeria I know that I would definitely stay put! |

If I were an indigene of that land then I wouldn't move at all. It is not exactly like there are any particular benefits of being a Nigerian and opposed to a Cameroonian. I would simply change passports if necessary and stay in my father's land. After all we are all Africans. People seem to forget that the border lines that differentiate each country from the next are man man and not God made. |

Ruby_Pearl: First of if you are classifying the few lines I wrote as an essay then that speaks volumes about your brain span. No problem with you picking out Walmart but then again it would have been better if you had more solid points to prove that Walmart was indeed a multinational company as you are insisting. It is not! Yes they own subsidiaries in other countries but that is not to say that they are dominating the supermarket scene in those countries. it is one thing to build a company from scratch and then declare world dominance and it is another to go into an already thriving market in a foreign country, buy up all the stores and then falsely claim that the brand is world dominant when you are not even using your name to sell the product. The fact that nearly 70% of their international sales comes from the UK where they market themselves under the name of Asda, which was already a thriving supermarket founded in the UK, should tell you something. 70% from a small country like the UK despite having a presence albeit under a different name in places like China, Brazil and other parts of South America where there are over billions upon billions of people says a lot about Walmart's so-called world dominance. Ruby writes: Yet you said that the companies was only known to US. I said : even though some brands are only known in the US like general motors, fannie mae and walmart. Which part of some don't you understand? I did not make any claims about the Uk having brands that were were compatible with every culture but if you must know here are plenty of UK brands that have adapted their stores or products to other cultures in order to maintain a respectable presence in their adopted countries and they have not tried to force-feed them American ideals like your beloved walmart. Here are just a few. Reebok Jimmy choo Burberry Tescos (trades as Fresh and Easy in the US) French connection (don't let the name fool you, it is British) The Body Shop Barclays group Hsbc Glaxo SmithKline Lipton tea Tetley's tea Wall's ice cream Sotheby's (World's second largest auction house) Christies (World's largest auction house) Cadbury's PLC (worlds largest confectionery manufacturer) Twix chocolate bar (Now manufatured by Mars, a US company, but a British brand) Kit Kat (manufactured by Hersheys for the US which, is the reason why it tastes like $hit in the US, but a British brand) Royal Bank of Scotland group which owns plenty of subsidiaries all over the world and the US including Citizens bank) Shell (the company originated in both The Netherlands and the UK) Reed international (recruitment specialists and well as global publishers. Macmillan publishers Virgin group easy Jet Vodafone (Largest mobile telecom company in the world) Bournvita McVities biscuits Digestive biscuits Sandwiches (if not for sandwiches there wouldn't even be burgers) HMV The BBC (largest broadcaster in the world) Harry Potter Some of the the above may not be well known in the US but they are in the rest of the world. It goes without saying that America is going to have a lot more well known companies than the UK. 300million+ people to the UK's measly 66million are of course going to have many more ideas but the UK still holds their own and are very influential when it comes to products, brands, life changing inventions and the like despite it being one of the smallest countries on earth. bawomolo: I live in the UK and I am not aware of any American cars that are popular here. Yes GM motors now own Vauxhall which originated in Britain. but just because they bought up a an already successful and popular brand of car in another country the brand doesn't automatically become American. As for China, never been there so I am not sure how popular American cars over there but from what I have read they don't appear to be. European cars, whether they are now owned by American conglomerates or not remain the best in terms of quality and sales. |

@Bawomolo Where in the world is GM known? Please enlighten me. Correction on my part, Dailmer is actually German, merged with Chrysler, American, but American cars are not popular all over the world if at all no so one outside of the US is checking for the American part of the business which is probably why Chrysler wanted to merged with the German manufacturer in the first place. |
Webmasters / Re: Who Own Google Uk Or Usa: by EloSela(f): 6:12am On Aug 31, 2008 |
Ruby_Pearl: Upon all the things I wrote you only picked up on Walmart? i repeat, it is not a known brand all over the world and even if you took time to read the link that you posted you would have realised that. This is why when they buy up existing companies in other countries such as ASDA in the UK and the other one in Japan they keep the existing names because even they know that 'Walmart' is not a well known brand outside the US and know one would be looking to shop in there if 'Walmart ' emblazoned across the fronts of their stores in those countries because people prefer their own brands. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/02/business/worldbusiness/02walmart.html?ex=1312171200&en=e05e99bb093724c5&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss Among other things, she said, Wal-Mart now cares less whether its foreign stores carry the name derived from its founder, Sam Walton, as the German Wal-Marts do. Seventy percent of Wal-Mart’s international sales come from outlets with names like Asda in Britain, Seiyu in Japan or Bompreço in Brazil. Tesco (the third largest supermarket in the world) also has stores on the West coast of the US and other countries but they are not called 'Tescos' .You don't see me in here trying to make out like it is an international brand like you are with walmart, despite the stores doing quite well over there. And as for walmart retaining their name for China, then that is not surprising at all given the fact the Chinese want to associate themselves with everything Western right now. It was in the news the other day about how they had placed an order for tens or thousands of London black cabs which in itself says a lot about their penchant for anything western. Ruby_Pearl: Someone asked what good had come out of the UK and I obligingly answered the question. I didn't say that there weren't any American companies all over the world. Obviously it seems like you and some others have a chip on your shoulders and want to show how 'big' America is to the UK' by coming out with silly obnoxious comments about nothing ever good coming out of the UK, when in pure fact if the UK didn't exist, then neither would the US. To reiterate some of the the biggest brands in America as listed on the Forbes list are not well known brands outside of the US such as Daimler, General electric, General motors and Walmart and I was trying to make a point that just because some of the biggest UK companies were not well known in the US it didn't mean ish. Plenty of UK brands are known outside of the UK, in the rest of the world, the world being bigger than America. Please try to get out of hicksville more often. |

I believe that Nigeria has more money than the Uk and they can easily afford to fund a healthcare system that would benefit the most vulnerable in society. However Nigerians (the politicians) have less sense than those in the UK). The saying 'a fool and his money are easily parted' is quite apt when describing the government in Nigeria. How else would one describe the dismal state that the country is in despite generating billions upon billions of money through oil revenue a week? The UK doesn't even have a quarter of the money that Nigeria has yet the country can still manage to provide healthcare for its citizens, decent schools, basic resources, and good roads to say the least. DeepZone: Please google before you decide to embarrass yourself by coming out with ignorant statements. There are plenty of UK companies that make the Forbes top 100 list and that is not bad at all for country as small as the UK with a pop. of just 60 million. The US has a pop of 300+ million and so it is not surprising that more companies of US origin would top the list even though some brands are only known in the US like general motors, fannie mae and walmart. Respect to this man. At least he is not at home knowing he has no money and sitting on his a$$ demanding money from local govt. because of his status. He is making a way for himself, buying a fresh water well for his people, now that's commendable. |

Please! The Americans are drug cheats and that is the only reason why they have dominated the Athletics events so far. I sincerely believe that world was duped by fakes such as Flo Jo and and even people like Carl Lewis and that those world records that have now been broken were not even real anyway. Nigeria finally got gold her gold after 8 years no thanks to those American druggies. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/news/article02//indexn2_html?pdate=110808&ptitle=Eight |

The dope tests are more stringent this year. I am sure that is why the Americans are not standing out like they were before. They also have one of the largest teams with at least 5 participants in every event, another reason why they are more likely to win a medal. |
