Business / Re: Advice: What Can A 20 Year Old Student Do To Be Successful In Nigeria. by emeka94(m): 5:54pm On Oct 12, 2014
alabiyemmy:
Face your studies and graduate with flying colours first. IF you do, employers will look for you and you are on your way to success.

Thanks a lot for the advice.

I get this feeling, at times, that studying is not always the ultimate, in the sense that there are hundreds of first class graduate still roaming about jobless. Tho I know that everybody's luck is not the same.
Forgive my pessimism, but it all seems blank, at times.
Business / Advice: What Can A 20 Year Old Student Do To Be Successful In Nigeria. by emeka94(m): 4:28pm On Oct 12, 2014
Am an undergraduate currently doing two unrelated Bsc courses in different universities (will be through in both schools by next year, God willing). Am confused -and scared, I must add- about the future in Nigeria. I know Nigeria is blessed and all that, but we all know that its always about who you know and how well connected one is.
The business space in Nigeria looks unfriendly to us undergraduates, from the angle am looking at it. My question is how and what can I do to be on my way to success and happiness? Do I need to go for any special course? Or develop certain skill.
Is it better to travel abroad, if I get the opportunity?

Religion / Re: What Color Is Santa Claus? How About Jesus? by emeka94(m): 9:48am On Oct 08, 2014
Maybe u should ask why white is used in weddings and black in funerals?
My mum has a picture of a very fine jesus in her room and I once pointed out to her that if jesus is a jew, from Asia, how come he has dark blonde hair and brown eyes in the pic? Trust me her answer wasn't pretty. I've never tried pointing out to her some inconsistencies in our faith/religion.
The truth is that we've unconsciously, or consciously in some cases, accepted the superiority of white over black and foreign over local. Its already deep seated that to unseat the motion might result in brain damage cheesy.
But I think that its all part of an early ploy -around 10AD -to Europeanise everything good and thus cast white people in superior light and the rest of the world, as inferior. If not for the invention of camera and globalization, they might have claimed that nelson mandela is white cheesy

Health / Re: The Rejected Nigerian Ebola Soldier (A Premium Times Investigative Report) by emeka94(m): 8:43am On Oct 06, 2014
Emmafrancis:
The topic at first glance is a bit misleading ooo. But all in all the reporter should understand that its not possible for everybody to be accepted. He holds Bsc microbiology while so many others have degree in public health and so many medical doctors with years of experience.

Finally the reporter have no reason to make a mountain out of an ant hill.

Did u actually read the article? Commissioner for health asked for volunteer and he wasn't specific about the speciality or course of study of the volunteer.
However, the call was misleading. It sounded so urgent like a clarion call to patriotism yet it was all for nothing. The next time something like dis happens (God 4bid) do u think anybody will volunteer?

The above is a line in the passage. I noticed this when I read but I didn't want to comment cos I wasn't sure if I read right. So I gave it to a friend and he confirmed.
Pls what does the statement mean?

Or put another way, it is a situation when someone refuses to face a problem but decides to act as if it doesn't matter.

Romance / Re: Love And Music: A Short Story. by emeka94(m): 10:53pm On Aug 30, 2014
Am a music person. But hey! Every one has their favourites, right? I've always loved tuface. His smooth tenor voice flow simply, free of unnecessary complication and complexity like that of Chris Brown or other singers who do magic with their voices. Don't get me wrong, I love Chris but his light seem to dull somewhat when placed side by side with the natural flow of bald headed Tubaba. Coupled with the deepness of his lyrics -that is purely esoteric- and the natural rhytme of his beats, tuface leaves the eyes wet, legs weak and heart asking the essential questions about life, happiness and love.
But I don't want to waste, nay waste is an insult. Let me rephrase. I don't want to talk of the musical prowess of 2baba instead I want to tell a story. A story of me, Afam and tuface.

See as we just dey here dey claim ownership of people who probably don't even knw where Nigeria is on the world map. Not to talk of whether they see or identify themselves as Nigerians.
At worst they call themselves Nigerian-american or nigerian british not yoruba-american or igbo-british.

slap1: I live in Aba.
Your storyline and narration is good. However, there are some mechanical errors in the story. When I log in with a PC, I'll try and highlight as much as I can. Good luck!
You should also pay attention to details. See the post below, for example.

Awesome.. I stay in Aba too. These finally answers the question "can anything good come from Aba?".
You've helped me a lot. Can't thank u enough. Can't wait for the corrections

slap1: The bolded sentence should end with a question mark(?), to start with.
A weak sentence lacks force and directness. It fails to clearly thrust its meaning on the reader.
Let's examine the sentence I quoted earlier. It is obvious that the rephrased version is easier to understand than the original version. When you write a sentence, ask yourself if you could have written it better. Attempt a rephrase of it (if you're not sure ) and compare both of them to ascertain the one whose meaning is clearer and better than the other.

This is an excerpt from my story:

www.nairaland.com/1855225/little-things-excerpts-novel-progress

Pay attention to the dialogue and observe how they are punctuated. You should learn something from it.

WOW. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. You flow seamlessly without hiccup. I so envy you.
I did learn a thing or two about the use of punctuation and sentence structure. But I did notice that you use more of complex and long sentence with lots of comma, why? Am very much afraid of long sentence - to avoid wrong usage of commas though I made an exception in this story.
What do you think of my writing ability, the story line and narration?
Where in th SE are u in?

But I've come to realise that although its often funny but she's in her own way trying to show us how silly some of the stuffs we do are. And how happy u can be by making loved ones laff and d beauty of staying young- at heart- with your children

Love her a lot(s) tho.

Her funeral was loud. Too loud for my liking.
At a point it turned from being about my late mother to centring on my father and his new wife. Dad basked in the lime light. Drummers accompanied him where ever he went and he flung money at them. Money that I never knew that he had so much of
"Wait later. Am expecting some business to finalise tomorrow" would have been his response if we, his children or mama, ask him for money. Strangely, tomorrow for my father never reached.
I began to hate him and his barbie doll face wife.
After the burial we moved to umuahia to live with him and his wife. But I couldn't stand him or the wife- though she was very nice to us and very motherly to magdalene.
Instead during holidays and breaks, I went to my maternal grandmothers house in Enugu. Soon obioma, chikamso, kelechi joined me there.
I still blame mama for her death. Often time I alternate between hating her and loving her. She let herself be bullied. She was too weak to fight. She trusted only in God, she never trusted herself. Other times I blame Dad. And then I blame obioma for leaving her alone in that room to cry. then I blame the world for being cruel and then God for not answering her prayer.
And now looking down at my father as the grave diggers poured mud on his coffin and the rain falling heavily into his grave, I feel sorry for him. His life had been empty. His funeral emptier.
None of his children-except me- came for his funeral. And the only one that cried was his poor old mother. His trophy wife had left him years ago, taking with him his last daughter.
He died a crumpled old man that complained about everything. I had expected him to be sorry but he wasn't. But I've looked beyond his stubborn exterior and seen the pain in his hard case shell. And I've forgiven him. For in forgiving him, I learnt to love myself and others more.
Now am a father and a wife and I hope I do well by them. As a doctor I hope I save more lives, not the way I couldn't save my mothers'. As a son, I can't do much else, than pray for my parents repose. And that Dad finds freedom from the ghost of mama that hunted him for years.

slap1: This sentence construction is strange and weak. You mean she didn't MAKE an eyelid? I'll rephrase it as: I shook her shoulders; but she neither bated an eyelid nor made a sound.

Furthermore, I think you have to pay attention to your punctuations. You present interrogative sentences without question marks, switch dialogues without commas and end what should be sentences without full-stops.

These are the two I identified easily because I haven't really read the story. When I do, I'll comment some more.

All the best!

Thanks bro.
Ur correct about that line. Its a huge error on my part.
I have a huge problem with usage of punctuation, can u drop a few pointers or guards for me
. Also what do you mean by a sentence being weak
I'll put ur observations into practise. U da best. cheesy
