This is a very very complicated case in the sense that your evidence and proof of ownership can not be substantiated anywhere.
But i strongly believe one thing, if you start an investigation, the current owner will
have to trace the lines through which the car got to him. My opinion on the legal side will not really be strong since i am car dealer not a lawyer.
But in the event you need to pursue this case further, please get a Lawyer; they are the best persons to deal with the police and compel them to treat this case. The higher the Lawyer's profile is, the better. But then, cost wise, can you pursue it? Also bear in mind that there could be backlash from the primary culprits, so be more on your guards.

On the VIN thing, your car was made either in Europe or Dubai or the SA plant of Nissan; any of the three but the Europe plant is more like it. Hence, i believe there must be an identification pattern for cars manufactured in Europe. If this was assembled in USA or Canada, i am dead sure you will find a strong record linking you with ownership of the car. Even if it was 're-vinned' like Fhemmy said, there will be records with all the DMV offices through which its titles had been updated. That said, the main problem with Europe assembled cars especially with cars the age of this one in question is that you just get a car sticker with the car details on ONE SPOT or at most three. Unlike American cars, where the VIN numbers are etched all over the frame of the vehicle. The engine whether Europe or US could easily changed to another even if not, it is possible to erase the engine number on an engine block; dem dey do am for Coal Camp self. . . . . .so that's not your best bet.

So with your question, can VIN be swapped or erased? Yes, and very possible in cases where the etching was only in limited spots on the car frame.
Where this not to be so, it will be so hard for them find all the spots where the VINs where etched. But can your prove your case? I think it is possible but to be on a safe side, keep your chances at 50-50.

What i will suggest is, google this car type and make and do a thorough research. Possibly, join a forum of people with similar car and get a more than indepth knowledge of the car. This is to help you find possible hidden locations where the VIN number could have been written but not easily accessible for it to be changed. It could help you understand the car better and prepare you better for possible appearance in court.

If you can, approach Nissan, to see if there is any service they render in terms of tracing car history within their data base. This will help you find out if your was right or wrong. A possible scenario that i am assuming is such that; the VIN currently on the vehicle will be that of another Nissan bluebird. Hence, you will also need to prove that the current sticker on that car isn't for the car but was stamped on it to effect a seamless deal with subsequent buyers. So be on the look out for that. Another set of people to involve is Customs. They should tell us how the car came into the country. It should provide some direct evidence. Also check with the Motor Vehicle Administration agency in the state the car was registered in. Check the two VINs and i am dead sure some records will come up.

Try these few ideas and let's see what comes of it.
