True.
I believe he meant the breed line

Slants are show line GSDs
Long coats are almost all show line GSDs
Regular or short coat /straight backs are almost all working line GSDs

Note that working kind GSDs have been observed to be more suited for field and security work. They're also superb sheep dogs

A dog from a working line is simply a dog that has papers to show it came from a line of working dogs or has history of work.

Even Slantbacks (I dislike using this word) are working dogs if it has papers to show this.

My late gsd bitch, at 9 months, she was still very playful, but when she eventually became fully matured, when she snaps here, me sef I no dey fit hold her back... I attached a picture below of my GSD puppy currently, she's 6 months and a week old, she loves playing with strangers. This doesn't mean that she won't eventually become a guard dog. I just let her mature in peace because size isn't maturity. Dogs have different temperaments individually, but if they're breeds specifically for guarding, the instincts would eventually show up bro. If you should eventually watch them closely, they must have started showing at least slight I stints towers guarding... They are still puppies bro, let them mature in peace. Don't listen to any unprofessional impatient human telling you to kill the dog, or that you got goats, or just saying shit about them... They honestly and obviously know nothing about breeding dogs. Love those dogs, in time soon, you will be marvelled. Mark my words bro.

I'm happy there are still genuine dog lovers like you in the dog community.
It amazes me when people complain that their dog which is still basically a puppy, haven't mauled people yet. In my deepest of hearts I ask how such people are allowed to own dogs. This is why we have so many strays because people fail to realise the responsibilities involved in owning a dog.

What alarms me the most is the amount of people that rush to bad ideas about the raising of their dogs. It fills my heart with sorrow.

I haven't been on nairaland for a while but I think it's time to revive my 'dog training and socialization' thread. Even if I'm able to influence just one person, it will go a long way

Thank you for trying to set them right. So sorry for your late dog and wish you happiness with your new one

Romance / Re: My Two Neighbors: Your Opinion On This Matter by Endy10(m): 8:55am On Feb 06, 2020
MasterRahl:
Hello fellow Nairalanders. How una dey do?
Okay, I have something to share and I sincerely need your opinion. Considering that this is Nairaland, I know say some people go wan bash me but no shaking. That's what makes Nairaland fun and interesting.

I live in an apartment somewhere in town. It is a massive building with roughly 28 apartments (mini flats).

Now, I'm a Kindle Publisher so I spend a lot of time on my system. And because of the nature of my work, I ensure that there is light in my apartment every time.

My neighbors (a guy and several females) like coming to my house to charge their phones. There's this particular girl (a corper who comes most nights to charge). There's also this particular guy (far older than me) who also comes to charge.

Anytime the guy comes, he'll charge and then settle down to watch DStv. This corper girl also comes to watch TV/charge her phone.

Here's the issue: anytime the lady comes in, she takes permission from the guy to switch channels. It makes me wonder

1. I an the owner of the apartment
2. I own the DStv and I use my money to subscribe it.

Why then does she make it a habit to obtain permission from another person before using it? I'm always on my system writing, but at least courtesy demands that she or any other person takes permission from me before using my property instead of obtaining permission from a fellow neighbor.

I haven't said anything to both of them. It has happened for several weeks and I've just been watching. I decided to table the issue here for suggestions.

One of the reasons why I refused to comment is because I don't want to be seen as an egotistic or proud person. They might say "he's doing guy for ordinary DStv" bla bla bla or he is immature and I don't wanna address the issue in the wrong way.

That's why I need your opinion guys. Should I just overlook it and continue with my life or do I address the issue? If yes, in what way?

Thanks

Usually I don't like commenting on issues like this, but I'll break the streak this time.

I see no reason for you getting angry over this. First after charging you let Dem stay over to watch. You never asked them to leave so they feel it's alright.
Secondly, the girl has done nothing wrong (apart from staying in a guy's apartment so late in the night). You said you are most times using you system which insinuates that it her and the other watches TV the most. Your post also insinuates that the girl probably comes after the guy and meets him watching the TV. He is the one watching not you. So she did the right thing by asking him. If you were watching and she asks permission from the other guy, then you can feel unease.

The girl exhibited the perfect behaviour to me.

Why you are angry when she is exhibiting the perfect behaviour is wat we should be discussing. It shows some underlining behavioural issues.

Thanks a lot Op for this enlightenment. I must say for the first time I am finally understanding my dog better. She is a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and I was already thinking that she's way too playful for my liking. I have a very big compound so she gets all the opportunity to run around... And that is what she does most of the time, when she is not digging up the ground in the orchard. She was born November 16 last year, make just a little above one year old. And she is already very big, and she barks quite well.

I am thinking of acquiring a male German Shepherd (puppy) between now and January. Do you have any advice on keeping dogs of different breeds?

Thanks a lot.

I'm glad you have a happy dog. I haven't come across a Rhodesian Ridgeback before. The fact that she is playful means she is active. You just need to help her channel it into an activity. Who knows, you might help unlock a potential in her!

On you question about keeping dogs of different breeds, it is very very possible. In fact, I think it's a sign that your dogs are very grounded.

Since your Rhodesian Ridgeback is the first I'm assuming she has received the necessary socialization especially with dogs. Would give her a chance to be more receptive of her new brother.

Good luck with your dog(s).
Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year to you grin

This is a hard question for me because I don't have sufficient knowledge in it. I only know from what I read and shows I've listened to. I'm sure those who breed will give a more detailed response

All I know is there are pros and cons. Inbreeding could lead to range of genetic defects or probably shortened life span. There are or effects.

However, for those aim to perfect a certain genetic trait in the dog, inbreeding might be of use

It's always adviceable when your dog has a problem you check with the vet first.
Refusing to eat well could stem from little things like change in his diet or eating time or it could be something serious as an illness that could become worse.

Lmfao....like the OP literally said, you're using dictionary meaning to define the temperament of a dog. Please do yourself a favour and read about the stages of the IPO or Schutzhund training and let us see if dogs according to your own definition will pass.

I don't just jump into argument or deliberation except I see prior knowledge about what you're saying or the willingness to learn new things.

Exactly.
I was waiting for someone else to bring up this point.
The reason for this thread is for people to learn. I know a lot of people are, even if few would take a little longer to learn because of years of wrong information.

isn't this how those well trained dogs act when they want to attack?
whether you can call them off or not as far as they act like this they are aggressive dogs

This will be my last post regarding this. Those who know enough about dogs, it's temperament, work characteristics and training know what I'm talking about.

You brought out one definition. In my post I mentioned that there are more ways to define a word and I gave you one of such definitions. There are others I could outline to portray my point. But since you are terming aggression as one concept I'll use this analogy

The definition you gave was, "feeling of anger that results in hostile behaviour or violence". That was for aggression. Changing it to an adjective aggressive means that it's now a quality. A quality where you are constantly in a state of anger that results in hostile behaviour or violence. That is your behaviour and that is the type of person your are. Are you putting the peices together? This means it takes little to put you off because you have that constant feeling of anger in you that you can only release through hostile behaviour or violence. That is why aggressive dogs always lash out. That is why any random person cannot pet an aggressive dog. That is why some owners are scared of their dogs. Aggression in dogs on the major reason for dog attacks. This is where the shot fuse term comes into play.

A true trained guard dog with good working qualities (you really need to look up the word working quality in relation to dogs) is not in a constant state of anger. He doesn't have to be because he has great temperament. When he needs to perform his job he does so not because he is aggressive...angry, but because it's his job.

It's just like in humans. If I meet someone who wants to hurt, even kill me, I'll do everything in my power to thwart that plan which might include me fighting and hurting the person. I just acted violently, but I'm I a person in a constant need to act violently? No, because I'm not an aggressive person.

A dog termed aggressive is always in a constant need to lash out. It doesn't have anything to do with the breed. It could be Great Dane or a Yorkshire terrier. Aggression in a dog is bad. No Police K9 unit would train an aggressive dog. It's a loose cannon. It's a liability.

I just got a 9 weeks old Caucasian. When should I begin obedience training?

I usually start obedience training anytime between 10-12 weeks. This is because puppies do have short attention span, so when you start, make it short e.g 10 mins. Give a week for the dog to get used to his environment first.

this is wrong and a common misconception, aggression is not a bad trait in dogs even the most well trained military dogs are aggressive.
in the k9 unit, the dogs are sorted out and the one's that are not aggressive are fired because they cannot guard, attack or protect properly.

aggression is being violent or being willing to be violent, if you want to define a term you have to use the dictionary definition and not the one you heard people say or came up with yourself.

an aggressive dog can also be a balanced well trained dog, aggression doesn't mean uncontrollable or having a short fuse.
any dog that shows signs of violence or is violent is an aggressive dog and a dog cannot be a guard dog without being violent or willingness to be violent.
no guard dog will smile and kindly ask intruders to leave, guard dogs bark at intruders and bite if necessary which is automatically aggression.

aggression is also quite normal In a lot of breeds, it's not a dangerous taboo in dogs.
you can effectively train an aggressive dog and have a well balanced dog that obeys orders and still attacks intruders if necessary.

if your dog barks at people (willingness to be violent) or charges at people to attack them(being violent) and you're saying your dog is not aggressive as a way to say your dog is not a mad dog then you are very wrong

I reiterate again, aggression is not a good trait in a dog. Since you are so bent on using dictionary definition, some dictionary term it "the act of 'initiating' hostilities or invasion". Those words are not words you'd use to describe a dog in control.

Again an aggressive dog is a dog with a short fuse. An aggressive dog does not know the difference between friend and foe even when the handler tells it. The dogs handled by professional trainers would allow a person they just chase and brought down pet them if the handler commands it. An aggressive dog will never do this.

Why do you think the temperament of a K9 is one of the qualities checked before said dog is allowed to undergo training? It is very key! An aggressive dog is a loose cannon in a mission.

We have normalized the term "aggression" especially in this part of the world to mean a dog that is either a good guard or watch dog that we have forgotten what the real meaning is.

Again I will say, an aggressive dog is a dog that does heed to command well. It is a dog that will attack and keep attacking even if it's owner attempt to call it back.

What you are calling aggression is called "work quality" in a dog. Again I urge you to read Phunkypalace threads about working quality in a dog. I also urge you to take time and witness where dogs go through their rigourous guard training and see how gentle those dogs can be. An aggressive dog will never be that calm.

I hope one day, with enough circulation of information like this, people will get to understand that their dogs can be great guard dogs without being aggressive and a danger to people.

Pets / Re: Dog Training And Socialization by Endy10(m): 7:30am On Dec 17, 2019
Good day everyone.
For a while I haven't been able to proper draft a write up because I've been pretty busy. Been preparing for detty december grin

This write up was meant to be about some basic trainings you could give your dog and useful tips on how best to go about it but I think I have to talk first about a disturbing trend on nairaland pet section.

It's about the recent number of threads that have popped up on nairaland about how to make your dog aggressive. People go about trying to make their dogs what they know nothing about without proper information. First thing to note is that an aggressive dog is not a good thing. I once wrote a reply to a thread here on nairaland about this and someone told me that a good guard dog must be aggressive. I don't conform to this belief because many people misplaced the true meaning of what aggression in a dog means.

For you to grasp the full meaning of aggression, I want you to apply it to a human being. When we say someone is aggressive or too aggressive, does that say something good about the person? When we use that word for a person you are describing a negative character about that person. The same applies to a dog.

An aggressive dog is a dog that has no control, no Limits,no inhibitions... nothing! This is a dog that has a short fuse a dog that can be triggered by any little thing. A dog that barely listens to commands. This is a dangerous dog. So when I see threads on nairaland on how to make your dog aggressive, I weep inside because I know the implications of what these people are about to do.

Making your dog an aggressive dog does not mean it is a good guard dog. If you've watched videos of dog trainings you will see that even after following attack commands the dog still heels or stays if the need arises. Even strangers can come pet the dog if the instructor commands it.

Each dog's guard instinct differs. That is why not all GSDs classed under working line cannot be police dogs. So before you try go trying to make your dog a monster, you have to understand the type of trait it has. I would advise you go through some of Phunkypalace threads. He is the owner of ignite German Shepherds.

If you are trying to make your dog aware of basic commands, to be able to do some guard work it's best you educate yourself before going ahead with some of the things that are seen here on nairaland. If you are a newbie, I would advise checking some videos on YouTube. It is better than some of the advice I see here.

In all, I wish you good luck with your dog. Remember your dog is more than a pet. It is your family. Treat it as such.
Pets / Re: Everybody In This Section, Lets Address This Issues For Once. by Endy10(m): 9:15pm On Dec 14, 2019
Let me start like this,

I'm sure you buy basic things like clothes, shoes, even food stuff and drugs sometimes. Imagine you went to buy a shoe and the seller tells you it's of good quality and sells it for a very huge amount. You go home and it doesn't even last a day because it was made from inferior quality.

Another analogy is this. There was a time Nigeria was flooded with fake drug. It took the intervention of Dora Akunyili to combat it. Those evil people decide to create drugs even when they knew the materials they were using was inferior and could kill.

This is the same with people who know they are not buying pure breeds of dogs and still decide to breed the said dogs. The number of mutts in Nigeria is alarming. If people don't critize people who breed mutts, we would continue doing it.

Have you ever sat to reason that maybe the reason why these pure breeds are so hard to procure is because the are hard to see? If everyone decides to breed the right way, who says the price won't reduce layer in future due to availability?

We must also critize because it's the right thing to do. If you see something evil and turn your fave away, you are also evil. It is a way of trying to make the world a better place with our little input.

The last is because we are genuine dog lovers that can't bear to see beautiful breeds diluted and washed away by greedy people who just want to make quick bucks. There are certain breeds that are hard to come by now. It's because of irresponsible breeders. We won't stand for that.

Dear OP,

Dogs are pack animals. They move around in packs and they usually develop bad habits and tempermental issues when they are isolated and lonely. Dog Socialization is all you need.
Start by taking your dog on short walks around your neighbourhood, then gradually allow your dog to meet other dogs. (Ask the other dogs owners first). This will help your dog to adapt and differentiate the different activities in your neighbourhoo, like motorcycle and car sounds and horns, joggers and kids running around and other dogs.

My dogs were creating a lot of ruckus and destroying my things until I joined a dogs connect group and started socializing them.
You can thank me later.

I concur with this. Majority of dog owners in Nigeria don't know the importance of socialization. It should be one of the first things you do when you get a pup. Socializing your dog doesn'tean it won't do what it's suppose to do when the need arises (if you've got the correct breed with working characteristics)

I also suspect that you dog has not been trained. Does it obey basic obedience commands? I would recommend you watch Victoria Stillwel's videos on YouTube. Would be a nice guide for you.

Wish you good luck with your dog
