Haroldjunior80: I'm happy there are still genuine dog lovers like you in the dog community. It amazes me when people complain that their dog which is still basically a puppy, haven't mauled people yet. In my deepest of hearts I ask how such people are allowed to own dogs. This is why we have so many strays because people fail to realise the responsibilities involved in owning a dog. What alarms me the most is the amount of people that rush to bad ideas about the raising of their dogs. It fills my heart with sorrow. I haven't been on nairaland for a while but I think it's time to revive my 'dog training and socialization' thread. Even if I'm able to influence just one person, it will go a long way Thank you for trying to set them right. So sorry for your late dog and wish you happiness with your new one 2 Likes 1 Share |

MasterRahl: Usually I don't like commenting on issues like this, but I'll break the streak this time. I see no reason for you getting angry over this. First after charging you let Dem stay over to watch. You never asked them to leave so they feel it's alright. Secondly, the girl has done nothing wrong (apart from staying in a guy's apartment so late in the night). You said you are most times using you system which insinuates that it her and the other watches TV the most. Your post also insinuates that the girl probably comes after the guy and meets him watching the TV. He is the one watching not you. So she did the right thing by asking him. If you were watching and she asks permission from the other guy, then you can feel unease. The girl exhibited the perfect behaviour to me. Why you are angry when she is exhibiting the perfect behaviour is wat we should be discussing. It shows some underlining behavioural issues. 3 Likes |

JOOHEL: After reading through your first post, my first opinion of you was that you were a bad owner. There were so many red flags of how you took care of your dog to show that. However, I decided not to judge you like that. I decided to read through the remaining posts in the thread. The morning I read, the more the opinion of you being a bad and greedy owner intensified. It was no suprise to read that the dog died which is very sad I'm sure u went into this purely for the money |

bizme: I'm glad you have a happy dog. I haven't come across a Rhodesian Ridgeback before. The fact that she is playful means she is active. You just need to help her channel it into an activity. Who knows, you might help unlock a potential in her! On you question about keeping dogs of different breeds, it is very very possible. In fact, I think it's a sign that your dogs are very grounded. Since your Rhodesian Ridgeback is the first I'm assuming she has received the necessary socialization especially with dogs. Would give her a chance to be more receptive of her new brother. Good luck with your dog(s). Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year to you |

I'm sure those who breed will give a more detailed response All I know is there are pros and cons. Inbreeding could lead to range of genetic defects or probably shortened life span. There are or effects. However, for those aim to perfect a certain genetic trait in the dog, inbreeding might be of use 1 Like |

IamAnderson: This will be my last post regarding this. Those who know enough about dogs, it's temperament, work characteristics and training know what I'm talking about. You brought out one definition. In my post I mentioned that there are more ways to define a word and I gave you one of such definitions. There are others I could outline to portray my point. But since you are terming aggression as one concept I'll use this analogy The definition you gave was, "feeling of anger that results in hostile behaviour or violence". That was for aggression. Changing it to an adjective aggressive means that it's now a quality. A quality where you are constantly in a state of anger that results in hostile behaviour or violence. That is your behaviour and that is the type of person your are. Are you putting the peices together? This means it takes little to put you off because you have that constant feeling of anger in you that you can only release through hostile behaviour or violence. That is why aggressive dogs always lash out. That is why any random person cannot pet an aggressive dog. That is why some owners are scared of their dogs. Aggression in dogs on the major reason for dog attacks. This is where the shot fuse term comes into play. A true trained guard dog with good working qualities (you really need to look up the word working quality in relation to dogs) is not in a constant state of anger. He doesn't have to be because he has great temperament. When he needs to perform his job he does so not because he is aggressive...angry, but because it's his job. It's just like in humans. If I meet someone who wants to hurt, even kill me, I'll do everything in my power to thwart that plan which might include me fighting and hurting the person. I just acted violently, but I'm I a person in a constant need to act violently? No, because I'm not an aggressive person. A dog termed aggressive is always in a constant need to lash out. It doesn't have anything to do with the breed. It could be Great Dane or a Yorkshire terrier. Aggression in a dog is bad. No Police K9 unit would train an aggressive dog. It's a loose cannon. It's a liability. |

UniportAgbero: I usually start obedience training anytime between 10-12 weeks. This is because puppies do have short attention span, so when you start, make it short e.g 10 mins. Give a week for the dog to get used to his environment first. 1 Like |
Pets / Re: Dog Training And Socialization by Endy10(m): 12:09pm On Dec 18, 2019 |
IamAnderson: I reiterate again, aggression is not a good trait in a dog. Since you are so bent on using dictionary definition, some dictionary term it "the act of 'initiating' hostilities or invasion". Those words are not words you'd use to describe a dog in control. Again an aggressive dog is a dog with a short fuse. An aggressive dog does not know the difference between friend and foe even when the handler tells it. The dogs handled by professional trainers would allow a person they just chase and brought down pet them if the handler commands it. An aggressive dog will never do this. Why do you think the temperament of a K9 is one of the qualities checked before said dog is allowed to undergo training? It is very key! An aggressive dog is a loose cannon in a mission. We have normalized the term "aggression" especially in this part of the world to mean a dog that is either a good guard or watch dog that we have forgotten what the real meaning is. Again I will say, an aggressive dog is a dog that does heed to command well. It is a dog that will attack and keep attacking even if it's owner attempt to call it back. What you are calling aggression is called "work quality" in a dog. Again I urge you to read Phunkypalace threads about working quality in a dog. I also urge you to take time and witness where dogs go through their rigourous guard training and see how gentle those dogs can be. An aggressive dog will never be that calm. I hope one day, with enough circulation of information like this, people will get to understand that their dogs can be great guard dogs without being aggressive and a danger to people. 3 Likes |

Good day everyone. For a while I haven't been able to proper draft a write up because I've been pretty busy. Been preparing for detty december This write up was meant to be about some basic trainings you could give your dog and useful tips on how best to go about it but I think I have to talk first about a disturbing trend on nairaland pet section. It's about the recent number of threads that have popped up on nairaland about how to make your dog aggressive. People go about trying to make their dogs what they know nothing about without proper information. First thing to note is that an aggressive dog is not a good thing. I once wrote a reply to a thread here on nairaland about this and someone told me that a good guard dog must be aggressive. I don't conform to this belief because many people misplaced the true meaning of what aggression in a dog means. For you to grasp the full meaning of aggression, I want you to apply it to a human being. When we say someone is aggressive or too aggressive, does that say something good about the person? When we use that word for a person you are describing a negative character about that person. The same applies to a dog. An aggressive dog is a dog that has no control, no Limits,no inhibitions... nothing! This is a dog that has a short fuse a dog that can be triggered by any little thing. A dog that barely listens to commands. This is a dangerous dog. So when I see threads on nairaland on how to make your dog aggressive, I weep inside because I know the implications of what these people are about to do. Making your dog an aggressive dog does not mean it is a good guard dog. If you've watched videos of dog trainings you will see that even after following attack commands the dog still heels or stays if the need arises. Even strangers can come pet the dog if the instructor commands it. Each dog's guard instinct differs. That is why not all GSDs classed under working line cannot be police dogs. So before you try go trying to make your dog a monster, you have to understand the type of trait it has. I would advise you go through some of Phunkypalace threads. He is the owner of ignite German Shepherds. If you are trying to make your dog aware of basic commands, to be able to do some guard work it's best you educate yourself before going ahead with some of the things that are seen here on nairaland. If you are a newbie, I would advise checking some videos on YouTube. It is better than some of the advice I see here. In all, I wish you good luck with your dog. Remember your dog is more than a pet. It is your family. Treat it as such. |
Pets / Re: Everybody In This Section, Lets Address This Issues For Once. by Endy10(m): 9:15pm On Dec 14, 2019 |
Let me start like this, I'm sure you buy basic things like clothes, shoes, even food stuff and drugs sometimes. Imagine you went to buy a shoe and the seller tells you it's of good quality and sells it for a very huge amount. You go home and it doesn't even last a day because it was made from inferior quality. Another analogy is this. There was a time Nigeria was flooded with fake drug. It took the intervention of Dora Akunyili to combat it. Those evil people decide to create drugs even when they knew the materials they were using was inferior and could kill. This is the same with people who know they are not buying pure breeds of dogs and still decide to breed the said dogs. The number of mutts in Nigeria is alarming. If people don't critize people who breed mutts, we would continue doing it. Have you ever sat to reason that maybe the reason why these pure breeds are so hard to procure is because the are hard to see? If everyone decides to breed the right way, who says the price won't reduce layer in future due to availability? We must also critize because it's the right thing to do. If you see something evil and turn your fave away, you are also evil. It is a way of trying to make the world a better place with our little input. The last is because we are genuine dog lovers that can't bear to see beautiful breeds diluted and washed away by greedy people who just want to make quick bucks. There are certain breeds that are hard to come by now. It's because of irresponsible breeders. We won't stand for that. |
Pets / Re: Tips To Control My Dogs Excessive Barking And Aggression by Endy10(m): 9:03pm On Dec 14, 2019 |
Ofuks: I concur with this. Majority of dog owners in Nigeria don't know the importance of socialization. It should be one of the first things you do when you get a pup. Socializing your dog doesn'tean it won't do what it's suppose to do when the need arises (if you've got the correct breed with working characteristics) I also suspect that you dog has not been trained. Does it obey basic obedience commands? I would recommend you watch Victoria Stillwel's videos on YouTube. Would be a nice guide for you. Wish you good luck with your dog |
