einsteine: Dude, after a devaluation, imported goods become MORE EXPENSIVE not more affordable. You really should think things before posting. Of cuz it increases. What are u saying? The prices of goods and services increase accordingly. So imports are more expensive. But that law never works in the Nigerian market. The person who made law never expected that a country would export raw materials and re-import finished goods. So if we are making some return on the exportation of those goods, even if the value of the currency is going down, but a country has phony GDP growth (growth in the amount of money individuals hold), they are able to afford the imports anyways so it does not apply. So they can get our raw materials cheaply, then sell us the finished products at ridiculous prices and of course we will buy it because although the currency has fallen, people have more money to spend. And mind you, fuel is a necessity so its income elasticity is almost zero. Regardless of the price of fuel we must buy fuel. So if we are importing fuel, we cannot be devaluing the currency. Else you become Zimbabwe. 1trillion Zim Dollars. |

Enyimbamercedes: Reminds me of the article on how to criticize the present government. Always start of with blaming PDP...I would be able to address your comment if i understood half of what you said but honestly i do not. How do you refine your fuel without...wait for it...functional REFINERIES? I agree on fuel not selling at the right price but i don't know what that has to do with bribes from the western countries. You may wish to recall that the PDP-led government attempted to sell fuel at the right price by removing subsidies but we all cried out and occupied the streets...now you wail that they collected bribes. Now listen, for as long as we import and we have FX restrictions, we will always be exposed to shortages. For as long as we fix prices and subsidize, the sector will never grow. No refineries will be built and we won't be able to refine and sell. Because western countries have to ensure that our raw materials which we export sell at next to nothing. The goal is to drive the prices of our raw exports down so we can devalue the currency to be able to afford the finished goods when it is re-imported back to us. Fuel included. |

Excellentmind: You don't just sit on the chair of your comfort zone and type trash from your freckle mind. Nigeria's economy has taken the path of recession due to poor economic policy and lack of knowledge. Yet, you continue to support a government that has lost control of the economy as declared by lie lie Muhammed. Comment is not by force. What poor economic policy? This is the first time in 16 years we have even had "An Economic Policy". I wonder what happened to all the intelligent people in this country. Nigerians are wailing because money is no longer easy to come by. Welcome to he real world. You cannot just loot money. You have to work hard, work really hard and actually contribute usefully to society to get money out of it. Nigeria is the most corrupt country in the world today. Outsiders look at us and laugh and they wonder how so much people can be foolish at the same time. That you even say what you are saying simply means you do not even know how a country makes money and you think it is by selling oil. All we have been doing for 16 years is giving our oil wells out and selling it. Leaving our own people in the Niger Delta to be the destitute of this murderous people. No one except the PDP looters and their handbags/wannabes profited from this 16 years. Schooling became harder, finding a job became harder, we have to fly to england/India (India that was almost nothing when we were everything back in the 60s) to get good treatment (so those of us who cannot afford to go to india and do not have looting connections can die abi?). And guess what? The entire world in a recession thanks to our over dependence on the dollar as a global currency that determines change in the trade markets, a default by American and EU banks means the whole world has to drink garri. So APC is not the cause of Nigeria's recession, the world has been in it for a long time. If your problem is fuel and light then I am sorry but you have a long way to go. |
Politics › Re: Kachikwu Explains Reasons For Fuel Scarcity (video) by enlightenedmind: 12:00pm On Apr 07, 2016 |
PapaBrowne: Interesting video.
From all indications the cause of the Fuel scarcity is clear. If you listened carefully, you'd understand the real reason why it was so easy for Jonathan to provide us fuel and it's been so difficult for Buhari to do same.
Kachichukwu's 3 undertones.
1)We(NNPC) shouldn't have attempted to go it(importation) alone. Buhari assumed that NNPC can supply all our fuel needs so he decided to discontinue supply relationship with importers by frustrating their forex demands. He wanted NNPC to do all the importation but forgot to determine first whether they had the capability to execute such a monumental charge. It's like deciding the government would now be responsible for bread supply in the country without first determining if they know the flour suppliers, whether they have enough bakers and things like that.
2)Pipeline vandalism. Kachichukwu said there has been more pipeline vandalism this year alone than there was in the last 3 years combined. And this has affected terribly fuel supply logistics. Well I wouldn't say anything here besides the fact that the tompolo pipeline contract suddenly looks like it was the wiser step afterall since whoever is now guarding those pipelines are failing terribly where Tompolo succeeded.
3)Returning to the Jonathan strategy- Kachichukwu has admitted that the NNPC cannot do this importation thing alone. So same as Jonathan did, they are now deciding to let the private sector get in on importation again.
Truth be told, Buhari's assumption that what worked in the 70s would work today is what is largely responsible for the troubles we are finding ourselves. The earlier Buhari allows his minister their freedom to operate, the faster we would get out of the mess we are facing. Why dont they have the capacity? So why do they exist then? What is their purpose if they cannot meet the capacity of the sector they were created to manage? Why do they get paid so much? Please do your jobs. No one cares really what Buhari did. Why were we importing fuel? So what has NNPC been doing for 16 years? Collecting importation loot. Please do ur jobs. |

caprini1: Yes I watched the video, and Ibe is a good orator, but I refuse to be swayed by his lyrics...the balance of the 40% of product by importers to supplement what NNPC produces, did not come partly by lack of forex for importers.........oh please!.....knowing that everything runs on fuel, why not make special provisions for them?....On payments of subsidy, why not negotiate better and at least keep the fuel coming, than wait before it became like a tussle between marketers. You heard what he said... Get up and do something useful. Stop sitting on ur ass and expect govt to put loot in ur account |

It is only not professional, it is also a wicked act for an administrator to want to restructure the administrations key component all at a single time, there are technical process to approach things. I can never shut down business operation of my clients all in the name of carrying out a maintenance or a troubleshoot, they will loss money and I won't get paid. If I will have to do that in worst case scenario, it means the client is spending money and not making money. Same thing applies to running a country, infact serious caution must come to play. coolbis: nigerians have very short memory, we all have forgotten that this crisis started first quarter of 2015 where NOI stated categorically that we needed to tighten our belt cos nigeria is not making as much as it made the last 4 years. As a matter of fact in one of the interviews granted to the newsmen,NOI admitted that the government had to borrow to pay January and February salary. It was within this period that the govt of PDP could not pay the subsidy owed the fuel marketer, thereby leaving behind long fuel queues and backlog of fuel subsidy running into hundreds of billions of naira. This present govt on assumption of office had to battle with all these mess and was able to bring sanity after paying the backlog. If the problem the foreign investors have is devaluation of our currency, then they should look for other investment destinations, devaluation of our currency in the past has done us no good, so I stand by Mr president on this. Me too. I do not know about the light. But the fuel and FX, I am behind him. If the so called foreign investors are not ready to actually "Invest" and are only interested in using Nigeria as a source of cheap labour and money supply market then they should pack their things and go. |

Let's also be clear that the amount of revenue Nigeria generates is enough to get things done to an extent that citizens don't have to pass through fire to earn peanuts. The revenue we are currently generating plus the looted funds that has been recovered can be used to repair and maintain our refineries up to the needed standard. If government is complaining of sabotages technology (cameras and heat sensors) and armed forces should be used to guard our installations. It's not rocket science. I am quite sure of my economics. The FX is crippling the dollar because the point of devaluing the currency is to make the imported good and services affordable to Nigerians. But since we are no longer importing, that move is redundant to us. All it will do is make the dollar stronger. If you are one of those pple that get extra cash through forex. Well sorry. Look for another route. Nigerians are lazy people. Now that the usual corner corner of rubbish has been wiped out every body is crying foul. We must do things the right way in country.
