So, without trying to judge or censor myself too much, right off the top of my head, here are the 10 things I first notice about men.

1

If he’s hot.

This doesn’t discount all the less hot guys out there, but, let’s be honest, if a guy looks like a model, it’s the first thing I notice.

If he’s (possibly) gay.

Where I live, it seems like there’s about a one in four chance of a guy being gay. I try to suss it out as soon as possible, to save myself the awkward futile flirting.

How he’s dressed.

I don’t judge, I just notice, and honestly, yes, probably make assumptions based on what he’s wearing. (Example: A suit at 6:30 on a weeknight? He probably has a certain type of job. Skinny jeans? His taste in music is probably way cooler than mine, etc.)

Who he’s with.

Is he with a girl? Then interest immediately aborted: I’ll probably assume he’s taken. Is he with a group of friends? Fun, good to know he’s social. Is he alone? Ah-ha…

Does he have a tattoo?

Some girls love tattoos, some girls hate them; I’m mostly just curious to see if he has one.

It’s the topless shot heard ’round the world. A picture of a comely blonde who took off her shirt at a trendy New York restaurant has become an internet sensation – picked up by publications from Italy to Russia to China.

But the photographer who directed young model Cheyenne Lutek to expose her breasts says it was all in the name of art and women’s equality.

Allen Henson, an Iraq War veteran-turned-fashion-photographer, told MailOnline he can’t believe the fuss that his photo project at Verso in New York City’s East Village has caused.

But in a new interview with Marie Claire, Nicki Minaj reveals that she never hits the  gym.

In a Q&A with her Twitter fans as part of  a feature for the magazine, the 30-year-old tells one of her followers how  physical activity has an adverse effect on her body.

When asked what her normal workout routine  entails, Nicki tells @forevertrend_: ‘I don’t work out. I hate it. I don’t mean  to sound super lazy. I tried it for a time.

‘I lost my boobs. When I feel I need to lose  weight, I just change what I eat. I cut out carbs and sugar. I’ll do water and  protein and fruit. But I do think that you should work out.

According to new scientific evidence, breaking out the bong for some Mother Nature has multiple health benefits. According the American Journal of Medicine (AJA), the benefits are remarkable and some fly in the face of what should be expected from a drug that produces the ‘munchies’, a rabid appetite. Chocolate City record label boss, Audu Maikori has reportedly given the real reason signees, Jesse Jagz and Brymo, whose contract is yet to expire, left the label.

It was a shock when a few months ago, Jesse Jagz dramatically dropped out of the label that was like a family to him, soon afterwards, Brymo dropped out too.

According to 360nobs, Maikori explained that Jagz’ lyrical contents and music videos, made executives believe he was ‘promoting drugs and nicotine in his music videos’ which was completely contrary to company policies.

Audu goes on to explain about Jagz wanting absolute control over his business and feels the dude was trying to rise above his ‘height’.

On Brymo’s issue, Mr. Maikori says that the young artiste felt he wasn’t getting enough attention from his label because Ice Prince Zamani was getting it all.

The chairman claims the singer was just being too envious of the BET winner and wasn’t putting enough on the table to get the best he’d wished for. After all, “It’s more blessed to give than to receive”.

A real Mermaid was caught on camera in Kiryat Yam, Israel by some tourists, who initially thought it to be a seal until they zoomed in. After zooming in, the ‘creature’ appeared to hear some noise, became startled and jumped into to ocean.

One of the first people to see the mermaid, Shlomo Cohen, said, “I was with friends when suddenly we saw a woman laying on the sand in a weird way. At first I thought she was just another sunbather, but when we approached she jumped into the water and disappeared. We were all in shock because we saw she had a tail.”

The mermaid sightings reports say, began several months ago.
Locals and tourists in the Israeli town of Kiryat Yam have been flocking to the coast in hopes of glimpsing a creature that most people believe only exist in fairy tales.

The town’s tourism board is of course delighted with their new found fame and local mystery fauna. As a result, the Kiryat Yam government has offered a $1 million reward for the first person to photograph the creature. Town spokesman Natti Zilberman thinks the reward money is well-spent. “I believe if there really is a mermaid then so many people will come to Kiryat Yam, a lot more money will be made than $1 million.”

I’m sure all the ‘Holier than thou peeps’ are about to get their panties in a bunch just from the title alone,

But, nonetheless I’m here to talk about having sex.

And doing it on the first date – I mean doing it hard on the first date.

I’m a 21st century woman, and a lover of sex.

I don’t consider myself an “ashawo” or anything like that but I do believe in sexual freedom, meaning if I want to have sex, I simply do gorgeously.

I don’t need permission or clearance to do so.

I’m sure some people have already called me names from my statement, but whatever.

I was having a discussion with a few friends over drinks (that’s when everyone was honest) and the issue of sex on the first date came up.

Oh!!

Before I go into all that we discussed, let me give a mini story.

A while ago;

One or two years ago, maybe.

I was introduced to a guy by a mutual friend via facebook.

A very good looking guy.

After a few messages and chats on fb.

We connected on BB, and chatted up a bit.

Over the next few days.

We talked and got to know each other better, and all that good stuff.

Eventually I agreed to go out on a date with him.

The date was as good as any date I had been on.

He was just as handsome as I expected via his pictures.

His look and body configurations captivated and ensnared my heart.

We talked about a range of topics, and he pretty much impressed me with his intellects, and vast knowledge on a lot of things.

This guy was very well rounded.

After dinner,

we headed to a bar,

had a few drinks,

Then we’re in the club dancing the night away, and I was having a good time of my life.

Slow dancing,

Extra touching,

Eyes fixing,

And, one thing led to another

In a nutshell, we found ourselves at his apartment making out on the couch.

Pause….

Now at this point, the girl in me is thinking

“Slow Down”

But everything else points to letting things flow.

And let it flow, I did.

We had sex. I mean great sex if I may add.

That was beginning of a 15 months relationship.

We broke up eventually for numerous reasons but we remain friends.

Now, back to the present,

I told my friends of my sex on the first date and how it leads to my last relationship.

To my surprise I was judged by almost everyone.

The guys,

The girls,

And, I’m sure the bottles too.

“How could you?” was their yelling

“That’s ashawo behaviour”

“That’s probably why you guys didn’t last”

“He never respected you.”

You would think I offered to have sex with him for money on the first date.

I personally think that if it feels right, then go ahead with it.

I’ve done the whole “wait for the 3rd date” thing, and guess what?

After that date where we had sex, a few days later he was acting funny.

And a week or 2 later he was history.

I have friends who hold out for months.

Once the guy gets the nookie, he bails.

So really, what’s the big deal with having sex on the first date?

Why place so much emphasis on it?

I’m of the opinion that it’s only an immature and insecure man that’ll hold that against you.

One common statement I get from guys is

“Well if it was that easy for one guy, then maybe it’s easy for everyone.”

Negative.

Not every guy is able to win me over like that.

One guy might take a few hours, and another might take 6 weeks.

It’s all based on chemistry to me.

Then again I might be wrong…

…I would think we would have gotten over this,

but in 2012 are we (women) still being judged by when we put out?

I just came out of a meeting where one of the participants was introduced as preparing to get married next month. In the words of the moderator “…next month he becomes a man…” and I began to argue with that thought line in my mind, asking myself the question “what makes you a man…? Because honestly, am not sure I have a definite answer to that.

I grew up knowing that the man is the one who fathered you, as in, he doesn’t get to carry you in the womb. He is the one who’s last name you get to bear in school. He is supposed to be the one you ask first when the fees are due in school. All of these are the realities I grew up with as a child, but as an adult, should I still see these things as the defining factors of who a man is?

Going back to what prompted all these thoughts in the first place, marriage. My bible tells me that “…therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave unto his wife…” (Gen 2:24). I have heard pastors quote this passage at the few wedding ceremonies I have been at, or at marriage-related seminars, stressing the fact that the bible says A MAN was going to leave and cleave, and not a boy, obviously trying to buttress a point, but it always leaves me wondering who gets to be called a man. Obviously, my moderator at the meeting tonight had the notion that marriage made you a man(and I have heard so many people tow that line of belief as well), but I have also heard pastors say from the bible that you had to be a man BEFORE you get married.

In exploring various thoughts, I know that there were cultural practices(some of which may still be in existence), which required teenage boys to go through initiation rites, after which they became men, not minding the fact that these rituals didn’t go on for years, not even months. I have raised this point because, although it is no longer a common practice, there was a time and in different cultures too, when it was the acceptable norm and I do not think we are light years wiser than those who carried out such practices. I see no difference between this practice and the beliefs that you become a man as soon as you get married. After all, they both say an event makes you one.

To some people, you become a man as soon as you can impregnate a woman, and though I do not have ready medical statistics nor evidence, but I should think that any 15 year old would be able to do that(correct me if am wrong). I know I would get knocks for this thought, but I have heard an Igbo adage which though I do not remember verbatim, it basically says “Once a young boy starts checking out his father’s wife, then it’s an indication that has become a man”. Now I ask myself when the average teenager starts having feelings for women, whether he admits it or not, and the answer I get is… (Never mind just put yours, lol). So if I understand that cultural point of view, you become a man when you can impregnate a woman.

Now another point of view: you become a man when you have a job and can take care of yourself. This view gets me upset because I have seen people get out of school and stay five years without getting a job. We all know how ‘easy’ it is to get a job in this part of the world, so then I ask myself “if an external factor way beyond your control is used to measure who you are, can we be said to be fair in our judgments?’ I mean, if I have my way, I would want to leave school and get to start working immediately at the peak of my profession. So technically, my childhood friend with whom I happen to be age mates and we both left school at about the same time, gets to become a man five years before me if after school he immediately got a good job, but I had to wait for five years to get a decent job. Hmm, how logical a thought!

I would want to present a final viewpoint; one which I find interesting because it really has no clear cut demarcation as far as I am concerned. I am sure a lot of you guys would say been a man is about been matured. Now, the question is “what exactly defines as maturity?’. I have had people tell me that maturity is of the mind, but that always sounds as vague and elusive to me, as the concept itself. Don’t get me wrong, I totally accept the word on its own merit, but who defines what? It obviously has nothing do with age, and call me “over-logical” if you want, but I always have a problem with concepts that you cannot pin down and nail on the head. With such concepts, people very easily begin to speak from both sides of their mouth.

On a lighter note, I would want to share an incident with you. I was sitting in church next to a young lady, and in the course of the sermon ,the pastor made a statement, saying “…let all men be liars, but let God be true…”, and the lady mused to herself( but loud enough for me to hear) “…yes pastor, all men are liars…” You and I both know they were obviously talking about different ‘men’.

And that has always left me asking the vital question, “Who is a man”…
