Very interesting thread, thanks OP for sharing. I've never really experienced such things but I have come to realise and now believe that truly a lot of things happen in the spiritual (and then become manifest in the physical). On several occasions I have had dreams that were a wake up call for me to pray in order for it not to happen. I remember once having a dream that there was a big red mark on my CV, immediately I woke up I knew this was a message especially since I had been job-hunting, prayed and fasted that day, few weeks later an advert came out in the papers and to God's glory I got that job stresslessly. So many other cases like these, warnings in advance in the dream which have made a big difference in real life. God indeed speaks to us (and particularly children because they are so innocent) if only we take time to seek Him and listen. |
How about 10 kobo recharge card?! Bunch of jokers ![]() |
airsaylongcon:This is so sad, and I can imagine your pain. I really pray for God's comfort for you and your siblings. May her soul rest in peace. I also pray that you would live long to see your own kids grow very old. Amen Pele |
This is partly the outcome of unnecessary boasting. She should have borrowed a leaf from bellanaija who keeps a reasonably low profile (and in addition got her own domain name). I'm not a fan of LI, but hope she learns the right lessons from this. |
All of the characteristics HR looks for in a job candidate are the polar opposite of what enlightened leaders seek in new talent. While HR is tediously focused on making certain that candidates "play well in the sandbox," strong managers want those who don't venture near the proverbial box. Which creates a conundrum and a paradox:to get to the latter you need to lie to the former. As well you should. Why be held hostage to a broken system? Case in point: the HR person will likely ask you if you work well with others? Well, many of the smartest and most innovative people on the planet simply don't. Not that they are trouble makers or in any way venal but they simply prefer to work alone, creating marvels of software, mathematical formulas or extraordinary feats of creativity. But can they tell HR: "No. I don't really like working with others. I guess you can say I do my best work by myself. My professors at MIT used to call me a 'loner.'" HR's universal reaction to this honest response would be "Next." Einstein and Newton would have failed their test. For years, my firm worked with a hedge fund that invests capital based on quantitative strategies, developed by their team of math and physics brainiacs. None even pretend to enjoy the social aspects of the work environment. For them, it is all about hibernation, concentration and introspection. They never stepped into a a sandbox as kids and they aren't about to start now. Over the course of an intense year when we examined and adjusted many of the practices of the fund, management came to recognize that the caliber of the candidates coming to them for second-stage interviews was way down below the quality hierarchy. On closer examination, we discovered the HR filter was turning the best and the brightest away before they could be seen by senior fund managers -- all geeks and loners in their own right. The solution was simple: HR was limited to managing the fund's employee benefits and policies and completely removed from the hiring process. Another HR question that demands a lie goes like this: "So tell me why you want to work for our company." In many cases, the honest answer would be: "I think this is the best place to make a fortune before I'm 35. I really want a chunk of those stock options." But to the HR paint-by-numbers gang, that would lead to a fast dismissal out the fire exit. To get to the next-stage interview you have to lie, waxing poetic about the company's innovative culture or lionizing it's irreverent founder (who, by the way, is eager to have brilliant wealth-seeking hot shots on the team). The old adage "Just be yourself," is a fool's game when it comes to the hiring process. Instead, at the outset, you need to be what HR wants you to be. And in most cases, you need to (and very well should) lie to win a pass to see the real players in the company. The ones with a 180 degree different (from HR) perspective on life/business/success and how to get what you want in your career. Look, I don't believe in making lying a way of life--in fact, I appreciate blunt and honest people and think of myself in this way. But when a system is stacked against the truth, dance around it. Since we can’t necessarily avoid most stress - especially in our work environments - it’s to our benefit to learn how to deal with it, and learn from the examples of those who are already successful. According to surveys and other research, successful people have some strategies in common when it comes to managing stress. They stay positive. Easier said than done? Sometimes. But successful people tend to be those who see opportunities for growth masquerading as failure, and who look for the lessons learned when something goes awry, instead of wallowing in what could’ve/should’ve been. Maintaining a positive outlook is a popular and proven stress management tool. If affirmations aren't exactly your thing, try reframing negative thoughts. If you find yourself dwelling on something negative, try adding, “But what I can learn from this is…” Even just noticing that you’re stuck in a negative thought can help you move away from it. They focus on progress, not perfection. No one is perfect. Not even the most successful people on the planet are perfect - and they would almost certainly tell you the same. Richard Branson, for example, has had some well known failures in his time, yet has always been blunt about his belief that you fail quickly, fail big, learn from it, and move on. Many of us worship the cult of perfection, but letting it go may release us from a heavy burden of undue stress. They practice self-care. Successful people often have the presence of mind to realize that they must care for their most important asset - themselves - in order to continue to be successful. They prioritize healthy habits like getting enough sleep, limiting caffeine and alcohol, getting proper exercise, and switching off from technology periodically. Being overly tired and constantly monitoring our digital lives puts our adrenal glands into overdrive, and our stress levels through the roof. A truly successful person will strive to find balance to help moderate his stress. They rely on routines. One major cause of stress is the number of decisions we have to make in a day. Everyday decision from whether to have the sandwich or the salad all the way up to hiring and firing decisions weighs on us and causes us stress. Relying on simple routines like having the same lunch every day, answering emails at the same time, or even simplifying your wardrobe can help save your stress and sanity for the bigger decisions that really matter. President Obama (who undoubtedly knows a great deal about stress) mentioned this in an interview with Vanity Fair: You need to remove from your life the day-to-day problems that absorb most people for meaningful parts of their day… You’ll see I wear only grey or blue suits. I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make. You need to focus your decision-making energy. You need to routinize yourself. You can’t be going through the day distracted by trivia. They keep the big picture in view. Finally, successful people are able to keep the bigger picture in view, rather than focusing on minutiae. This is about focusing more on the “why” behind what you do than the “how.” For example, you might feel yourself getting stressed out about the fact that you have to work out every day for an hour (the how), but if you focus on the reason you want to work out - to be healthy and live longer - you may find the actual task less stressful. They practice gratitude for what they have. It may sound a little Oprah to you, but developing a gratitude practice is a psychologically proven way to reduce stress and maintain a more positive outlook on life. When you have a more positive outlook (and less of the stress hormone cortisol) you are happier and more productive, too. Siena: [color=Blue]I personally never buy any vehicle based upon displayed mileage. Service history, and the feel I get during an extensive test drive are more important. Thanks a lot for the response. I'm based in NL for the moment. It's my first car, and I do not have a big budget - so looking at cars in the low insurance band with small engines 1.4, 1.6. I noticed though that most of these small engine cars are petrol, sadly. In addition to the Peugeot 308, I'm also considering Toyota Yaris (2007) and Citroen C4. Been looking for some time now, but the really nice cars with reasonable prices are outside London / Midlands which is too much travel to go and view. I have also been reading reviews on Autotrader and avoiding cars with lots of comments on poor reliability. I will be driving to S about 3 days a week so want a reliable car with a high MPG. Regarding the mileage, since it's not a guarantee that it's genuine, what "advertised" mileage range do you consider acceptable, 40k + ? Thanks again. |
Hi Siena, Not sure if this is the right thread to ask this, but I would please like to get your thoughts on the following: - Mileage: I'm about getting a car and lots of people have advised going for a low mileage car, but at the same time I'm aware sometimes people can tweak this. So is it really a big criteria, or are other factors like the Full service history, single owner more important? - Do you have any thoughts on the Peugeot 308 (2008 or 2009 model) - Is it true that Diesel cars are more efficient than Petrol? - Lastly I plan to go for an Automatic, but someone told me they tend to have more problems than Manual. Is this true? Majority of the cars I've seen on Autotrader are manual but I would rather an Automatic. Thank you. |
Chinwem: Useless countryPls let's tone down on the negativity. Nigeria has a lot of issues yes, but calling it a useless country is a tad bit too much in my opinion. The power of life and death is in the tongue. |
Do some Nigerians ever think about anything besides money money money?! Please give it a break already ![]() A forum is different from an entertainment blog so why the comparison in the first place? Who makes more dough, and so?! The whole "my generator is bigger pass your own" mentality really really eating deep. Smh |
I consider myself neutral and my 2 cents is this: I have closely followed TeHn's threads for a long while and observed that threads always had names (usually initials) of all who donated and the amount given. The outgoings have also always been stated. I really don't think it's fair for people who are taking time out of their daily schedules to coordinate and organise this (yep, i can imagine the time required to keep on top of it all) to be accused of all sorts. This is not a popularity or election thread, it is simply for anyone who shares the vision and wants to be a part of it. The goal of this thread (the people whose lives will be impacted in one way or the other) is too important to get it derailed. One love |
sol2galay: Adadioramma means a daughter cherished by the people. Are u an Ibibio if i may ask? Thanks! No I'm not Ibibio |
CFCfan: It means "a daughter who is good for the pepple"Oh great, thanks for the translation. |
All manners of space booking on this thread! Are people this desperate to comment on Front Page?! ![]() |
Does any one know what the name Adadiora'nma means? It's such a beautiful name but I've got no idea what it means. It's not as common as Adaobi, or Adanma. |
What??!!!! I still wouldn't advice him to walk on the streets of SA though. |
This is just not fair. So much oppression of the poor going on in Nigeria. Not fair at all. How much is allowance for corpers and now they would have to pay N4000 for just a letter?! This directive MUST be reversed. |
lirusehn: how many times wud you guyz keep sharing this? It's a free world you know ![]() |
These days I see English being murdered a lot on Nigerian blogs and forums In my opinion, expressing yourself correctly in the workplace is part of being professional. Also, a CV or Cover letter riddled with lots of grammatical blunders would not be a plus or reflect well on you. The words below seem to be ones most commonly interchanged wrongly. Been - Being She is being so nice today. I have been to Vegas. It's been a long time I saw you. Thought - Taught I thought you said you will come next week. I was taught not to be rude to others. He taught English in the local uni Leave - Live I will leave you behind if you continue wasting my time. I live in Lagos Park - Pack Park the car on the left. I will pack my bags tomorrow. Weather - Whether The weather is bright and sunny. It doesn't matter whether you take it or not Order - Other The order of programme will be distributed soon. In order for the show to go on, we need more drinks. I have got other things to do this afternoon. In other words, you will not do the task. Cause - Course You are the cause of all this mess. Of course, I will not do it. She is on course to graduate with a good grade. Defer - Differ I will defer my admission I beg to differ, I do not agree with that. Deem - Dim The light is too dim, please make it brighter. I deem it unnecessary. Alter - Altar Her dad walked her down the altar I will alter the article before sending to you. Grateful - Greatful Truly - Truely She is truly a gem I am grateful for your help. The words Greatful and Truely do not exist. Grammer - Grammar It is simply English grammar. Eod. |
There is fire on the mountain and we do not even know it ![]() Without education, a country cannot develop. A good example was when Ebola landed in naija, all we could do was shout for help to every other country. The researchers in the West were not born experts, neither were they born with 2 heads; they educated themselves to that point. |
Awww But at least she lived till eighty-one, others have passed on at much younger ages e.g Robin Williams. |
Elantracey: yea I agree but do you know that you just judged me ? There could be several reasons why I asked that question moreover you don't know what on my mind before I asked it, I could have just being wondering what must have kept her think then and decided to voice it out even though I know no one here has an answer to it , I always try my best never to take God's place in people's life because I know am not perfect at all.No dear, I did not judge you, I only expressed my opinion that your statement was a judgmental one. I don't have any issue with you as a person, you sound like someone who is focused and sets goals and all that, which is good. Your statement was what I had an issue with. However, I will cut you some slack and agree that it's only God that sees our thoughts and hearts and He is the One that knows what you TRULY meant when you wrote that line. I'll just leave it at that. |
Elantracey: please can you point out a place where I judged her?If you do not consider this statement a judgmental one, then I rest my case: "but what was she doing till 42". In any case, there is really no point over-flogging the issue, GodMyStrength, Aisha2 and several others have said it all. I am glad we have such mature people on NL who give very balanced advice. And can I also add, that the same Bible tells us that God dwells with the humble in heart. That is all I will say. |
Elantracey: lol I have calmed down o , but my bible teaches me that your life is programmed by your thoughts and words and still stand to say except its God's decision for me to get married late am going to get married before am 30 to someone that's right for me and it doesn't mean that those that will get married after were bad or something .The same Bible also says "Judge not". |
Serious traffic for Seun / nairaland today, this is the kind of gist Nigerians like to hear. World people ![]() |
alentyno: Check her profile pic you will understand why she is sounding so aggressiveLOL! I can see why now oooh ![]() |
sandijey: You that no English. I hope u don't use short forms in writing English and I hope u don't make mistakes when u type. If u do. Then hold ur peace. Am typing from a phone hence anyone is entitled to typos. U made no sense.Breathe in, breathe out, and then calm down. I don't understand the level of aggression you are demonstrating all over the thread (abi did a first class holder once vex you ni?) Life is too short to be getting this worked up by other people's affairs so chill abeg. OP, do not get derailed or demoralized by whatever anyone here is saying. You have done your part, trust in God, have the right mindset, be positive and remain focused, you will certainly get there. |
sandijey: Madam I repeat a lot of first class material are not intelligent. A first class graduate of maths that I no who thought me in my 300 level could not speak English well. New nothing about current affairs. But He was great in maths. Many of them are like that. Brilliant but bad personality and no nothing outside their course. My course is a course that u must do presentation. Talk in class in front of everybody. One of my seniors in school was always fidgeting and she always failed presentations. How can she pass an interview wiv her 2'1. I am not making generalisation. This problem is very common. To me A first class graduate is more than paper qualifications. When u speak it must show. Such a person is an all rounder. I have been to many interviews o and I no exactly what I am saying. Its not about reading to pass. Which many people do. You should be able to defend what u came out wiv. The fact that u came out wiv a 1 st class has put u above a lot of people. It must show in everything. These interviewers can be crazy. Ask crazy questions unrelated to ur course. Ask real life questions that has nothing to do wiv what u write on paper in school. That is my point between brilliance and intelligence. And you are talking about someone not knowing how to speak English well?! I rest my case. Just always remember that when you point a finger at someone, the remaining four are pointing back at you. |
Wow, that's pretty awesome. Well done guys! The concept of doing stuff like this for charity is still quite new in naija, it is operation each man for himself . Hopefully, one day we will adopt that mindset of looking out for others in the society not just ourselves. |
