PoliticsRe: Veetee’s $12m Ofada Rice Factory Raises Hope – Fg by Epiphany(m): 1:06pm On Apr 06, 2009
My people - thot i was the only one to see these Indians as opportunity grabbers and smart people. They have so taken over our economy. All our SMEs are owned by them. They own most of the food and biscuit manufacturing companies from vijumilk to. . . . just name it. Many other companies like Churchgate, Kewallrams, Honda Place etc.

In fact, if Dangote did not jump into the fruit juice market, companies like Chivita (which is Indian) would have continued to 'rule' the market.

Now, the most annoying fact is that Nigerians, no matter how smart and good you are, cannot run businesses like these in India. Those guys there will frustrate the life out of you.

However, these companies are contributing to the economy sha as they employ people [even though it is more like slave labour] and [supposedly] pay their correct taxes

Both cvibe and gReenmAn are correct.

If you are successful, you will def hear from them. However, sometimes, these recruiters can be very slow. If after a week or two, you have not heard from them, call them. They should have given you someone's details you can talk to for some feedback!

The time btw my last interview and when i was made an offer took almost one year. Imagine that! It was for another Multinational though.
FamilyRe: I Am Tired Of My Oyinbo Wife by Epiphany(m): 12:53pm On Apr 06, 2009
Hey Mr Poster,

I tried to refrain from making any comments on here but i cant resist - it seems to me, that you have already made up your mind to divorce this girl. However, i have seen from many of the replies you got, that people are encouraging you to COMMUNICATE with your wife. Look man, no marriage is without problems - money, sex, family (in-laws), etc. It is just left for you  and the lady to work things out.

Sit her down, talk to her and see what happens. Wait for a long while to see what happens because talking to her today and expecting a change tomorrow is not realistic. If nothing happens, talk to her again and again and again. Give it a year. IF NOTHING REALLY HAPPENS, then you can divorce. But honestly, marrying someone else will come with its own problems too. If you like, marry one of your own (someone from your backyard or someone you grew up with). I can guaranty you that you will still have problems.

One thing i know though - there is no way you can be a GOOD LOVER and your wife will not respond. Unless like you said, she is frigid. If she is, the problem is deeper than you can see - and she needs help.

But like i said earlier, your posts seem like you have already made up your mind to divorce her - AFTER ONLY A FEW YEARS OF MARRIAGE? PITY

Bros, i thought i am the only one that does this. Many times when i am in parts of London and i see our people misbehaving, i just keep a straight face and pretend like i am not 'one of them'. Seriously, people have actually sat next to me on trains or buses, shouting in yoruba or ibo or pidgin, and i just force myself to maintain some form of decorum. When they finish their ill acts, turn to me and say, 'are you a Nigerian', i always reply in a very curt  and clipped tone, NO I AM NOT!  grin grin. Next thing, they will be asking you for change to buy a meal and where you live - blah blah blah

Make una no diss London o?? Nigerians in Texas are worse.

Tracy is Nigerian and she's a hit-babe.
If you know any woman trying to snatch your hubby/boy-friend, hire TRACY!!!

I know her as Tracy. . . . .Her posse calls her Tracy.

There was an incident in Essex some 18 mths ago. . . . . .A woman saw her hubby's car parked in front of a house and decided to go there herself to go look for her hubby.
Fortunately/unfortunately for her, it was one of the pads of Tracy's posse. . . . . . . The husband snatcher called Tracy to come bail her out when the woman started making a scene in front of the house. When Tracy got there, she thrashed the woman to a pulp.
Cops were called, Tracy was released without charges. Intel says Metro Police are tired of her antics.
She is ABOVE THE LAW.

UCHE ke?? Mistaken Identity.
grin grin grin.

O boy i dey tell you o. Me and the babe grew up together o - i am even ashamed to admit it. From her voice, i can even tell she is the one.

Evryone talks about the tackling of poverty, helping Africa bla bla bla and when it comes to an economic summit to discuss the global economy Africa is left in the cold and one country is representing itself and not even Africa.

Not all of the EU have open borders and it is just the countries that are landlocked together (Shen gen)

Thanks for the correction - those countries that are locked together make up one big economy and they all use the Euro as a joint currency under the European Central Bank. They also have the rotational presidency thing which puts them under one leader at any given point in time. I still think that is a major reason they invited individual presidents like Sarkozy and Merkel etc but still have the EU as one country.

PoliticsRe: Why South Africa Instead Of African Union? by Epiphany(m): 3:06pm On Apr 02, 2009
AU cannot be invited as 'one country' because the AU is made up of different countries, with different people, borders,  currencies and problems. Many AU countries are among the poorest in the world, are either at war or are just recovering from war. There are too many internal struggles within AU countries hence, the world does not see them as a body that can offer anything that will help the global crisis. AU countries will rather seeking aid and/or peace keeping interventions most times.

In fact, i dont know how reliable wikipedia's data is, but i have just read from there that South Africa as a country constitutes about 30% of AU's economy. If that is not significant enough for the worlds recognition, i dont know what else is. AU has 53 member countries and one country alone constitutes 30% of the whole economy. That is enough recognition for South Africans.
PoliticsRe: Why South Africa Instead Of African Union? by Epiphany(m): 2:44pm On Apr 02, 2009
Another reason may be the fact that the EU is a collection of countries that have 'open borders' - meaning that since they share the same currency, operate free trade and population movement btw them and have a 'single voice', they can be thought of as ONE COUNTRY and one big economy.

PoliticsRe: Brain Drain In Nigeria, Who Is To Blame? by Epiphany(m): 4:20pm On Apr 01, 2009
Of the whole 150 million Nigerians, those that are to blame for the brain drain cannot be up to 5 million. Wow, can you imagine that? I am thinking of those people, so called leaders, who have - for so many years - brought us to where we are now.

I am an a memeber of staff in a university in the UK and in the course of attending conferences and training programms internationally, i have met many Nigerian lecturers, scientists and researchers. When you ask them why they are not in Nigeria, it all comes down to the same reasons. Facilities, opportunities for advancement, living conditions, peace of mind (which more than half consider the most important). If i am asked the same question, i would say the same thing. It all comes down to the quality of life some people desire.

Not everyone is cut out for the hustle and bustle of working in banks and companies and in the private sector. some people just want to work in educational or research institutions. They want to read, write, research and teach. When the opportunities are not there, they will always find other places where they will get those opportunities.

proudly9ja:
Epiphany, you are probably the first person on this thread who will attack issues and not personality and I respect you for that.

I also agree with sme of your points and will wish to say a few things:

1. I agree that rebranding should start from the top. The whole rebranding exercise should start from the President. But we all know who our president is and we know his croonies and the thieves around him. I am trying to put myself in Dora's shoes. I don't know her from Adam but Im trying to give her the benefit of doubt based on her work from NAFDAC. If I was Dora, Il probably be treading the same path. I am sure she knows there are thieves in Government and maybe she even knows one of them is her C-in-C but what can she do? Should she just sit down and fold her hands and do nothing? Should she resign like a lot of people have suggested? Well if I was Dora, I would do exactly what she is doing, I will do my best.
Nigerians need re-orientation. We need to believe in ourselves and have the can do spirit. The reason why a few have continued to destroy our Nation is because the majority have adopted the siddon look spirit. If this rebranding and re-orientation challenge can help us realise that Nigeria belongs to us all, then maybe its worth the effort

2. I also agree that India contributes to the global economy more than we do but think about it, we have started slowly too but surely we will also get there. You mentioned Dangote and Adenuga and Otedola. Years ago, how many people could you mention like that from Nigeria? Maybe none, not even MKO with all due respects. Rebranding should bring up more Nigerian entrepreneurs. The road and journey maybe hard but we can do it. Believe it or not, a lot of Nigerians in Nigeria are doing great things. But the key thing is, we need to believe in ourselves. Dora gave an example of the guy who discovered the cure for diabetes and how Nigerians (even Nairalanders) discredited him. Thats a guy who should be ranked amongst the top 10 most popular people in the world right now. If he was American, he probably will. Some years ago, a Nigerian claimed to have the cure for AIDS, same thing happened to him, we discredited him

Me thinks Nigerians should give Dora a chance. If for nothing at least for her past achievements. Bad leaders cannot be removed on the pages of newpapers or on Nairaland. Bad leaders will be removed when the entire populace realise that the Nation is OUR Nation and not 'their' Nation.
I think that the need for orientation is our GREATEST NEED. That single job alone will get us out of a lot of the mess we are in today. Also, on the part of Dora doing her best, i dont doubt that. In fact, i think she may be going about her job with the same vigour she had when she was in NAFDAC. My only arguement and fear is that without the cooperation of the president and his cronies, all her efforts may come to naught - which in essence, may tarnish the excellent image she acquired from NAFDAC.
PoliticsRe: Nigerians Abroad Our Worst Enemy-dora Akunyili by Epiphany(m): 12:15pm On Apr 01, 2009
Although Prof Akunyili pointed out some truths in her discussions, there are certain things that will never aid Nigeria in this rebranding exercise. NEVER!

She spoke of poverty in India, war in Angola and a VP in South Africa, confessing that he slept with a prostitute. Does she recognize that Nigeria has a very bad image around the world? These countries she mentioned have been able to manage these negative events because they are not the TOTALLITY of what those countries are known for. They have a lot of other things that overshadow these negative things that happen to them. This is unlike Nigeria, where we are at the bottom of the most corrupt list. We are nearer the bottom of the 'poorest countries in the world' list, than the top. We have among the highest number of people seeking asylum in other parts of the world. Most countries in the world (including our fellow Africans) are on the lookout for Nigerians [green passport holders] entering their countries etc.

Does she know what india is contributing to the world? India not only has some of the richest and most enterprising people in the world, but the largest companies too. Talk of Tata, WIPRO, Infosys, Mittal Steel etc, Reliance industries etc. To put these in perspective, either of these companies can buy All Adenuga's investments + Dangote + Otedola put together (if you consider that Otedola and Dangote put together are valued at under 6billion USD and these indian guys (Ambani 10.1 billion, Mittal 19.3 billion, Ambani 19.5 billion)  are considered to be much more internationally focussed and relevant.

Secondly, we do not have a proper level of infrastructure maturity, e.g. our roads are poor, we do not have any electricity, we dont have any water, our airports are poorly maintained and so on. Our universities and schools are not performing well. We do not have one university that is considered to be among the top 500 in the world. What of our environment? Apart from places like Abuja, Ikoyi, V/I etc etc, our environment is poorly maintained. Buildings are not painted, streets are dirty and dry - with dust and dirt all over the place.

Rebranding Nigeria should not start from her, but from the President and his cronies first. Shebi even bible talk say oil will first flow down from the head to the rest of the body - abi? If the head is rotten, the rest of the body cannot function.

Well, in as much as I agree with you that ''some people are not doing their jobs'', don't you then think that all these energy we have spent castigating Dora (more than three threads devoted to this rebranding issue alone!), we should use it to at least support her if for anything, at least let's remember her success at NAFDAC.

While at that, we should also spend the energy screaming at power minister to give us constant power, health minister to improve on our health care, etc!
At least Dora is not 'chopping' the money like other ministers are doing
My broda, we have been doing this for so many years now and yet nothing has happened. If we open any news paper today, people are writing about these things. Put on the TV and people are screaming for these things. Students have demostrated over these issues. NLC has gone on strike because of energy matters.
