ibkayee: Don't think 40k is 3k take home, I think the take home is like 2.5k and possibly less depending on additional costs like pension schemes etc.
It's not a poor salary, although with the 10% inflation rate it won't quite cover what it used to Ok check this.35600 is £2300 there bouts take home basic. So £40k should be close and also depends on your tax code. Also people on £40k wage are termed middle class in the Uk cos most managers do not even earn that. |

ibkayee: People earning £40k in the UK are not considered poor, are you conflating it with just London? Even in London, assuming you don't have kids and family to provide for and depending on where you live, your commute and a whole bunch of other factors, it will be tight but it's definitely not 'poor' status £40k means nearly £3k take home, I remeber when I was on that wage, I wasn't poor, I was doing so well, I had my House in N8, if you know Hornsey near crouch end. Dunno why guys on here keep comparing monies in the uk and Nigeria, there is nothing to compare . |

Lekan239: like I said, do not compare the earnings over there with Nigeria earnings without comparing the cost of living of both countries.
Someone earning 2.4m(200k monthly) annually in Nigeria is not poor here in Nigeria, but someone earning £40,000(£3,333 monthly) is considered poor down there. Stop assuming, this is the problem with you lot, you fling figures outta thine air with no back up, why don't you back up the Nigerian claim and lets us back up the Uk claims with figures, Inflation is up in the Uk, but in Nigeria the inflation is mad.N200k monthly money is nothing compared to the standard of living in Nigeria. If you have a freezer, Ac in your house you Energy bills will surely get to N35k in a month, when you add you car fuel to it your energy bill has already gone up to nearly N60k.You might spend N10k for Data if you are not a heavy User and N8k forTV. Now food how much you recon? N80k?we have not added rent yet and other health enablement. Cant you already see that due to inflation N200k earner is a poor man? Imagine if that month you now need to fix ur car or something |

Even if they you £2000, he will at least pay a tax and NI of £700 unless he is working outside the system. Working outside the system i.e not paying tax and NI no one will pay £2000 a month. I hope he is not doing some other things I know Englis is not your native language but I'm very sure you saw me writing TAKE HOME if you do not understand what £2000 take home means please ask for explanation, cos I'm now confused you talking about NI and tax. IbeOkehie: Can you give an estimate of the number of people living in Nigeria that you think earn £1,000/month?
I know for instance that drilling engineers in the oil & gas industry in Nigeria can earn anywhere from $500 to $2000 per day. Office based engineers in earn somewhere around ₦600K to ₦1 million per month. This I know, I've seen the paychecks for these people. The TOTAL EMPLOYMENT COUNT in the entire oil & gas industry in Nigeria is 65,000 persons, including drivers, gatemen, secretaries and cleaners. Chevron Nigeria has 600 permanent employees ONLY, anyone else working at Chevron is a temporary contractor. That's an industry I happen to know a bit about.
The TOTAL EMPLOYMENT COUNT for the Federal & State governments combined is about 2 million people. Averaged out, I don't believe they earn so much. How many of them do you think earn £1,000/month?
So could you please estimate to me how many these super earners there are in Nigeria?
I know they exist, I know a fellow who works remotely for Microsoft in Nigeria, he was in my home this past summer. I know another who has a fish farm and makes a lot of money, I know how he pays his workers, I also know how much artisans in the building and quarry trades were making when I employed them in Nigeria. So my close experience and information matches the research reports I've read from PWC and others that only 0.5% of workers in Nigeria earn more than ₦200K per month.
Again, it's not that these Super Earners don't exist, the real issue is HOW MANY OF THEM are out there in the Nigerian population? What are they chances that a random person you meet at Abuja Airport earns £1,000/month? That's the koko of the matter, that's more RELEVANT.
Anyway, to each their own. Believe what you want. Bro you know when people talk the way that guy you quoted talks, you just know they aint shyte. |

ttoyetade: Thanks but this is not normal or possible within 3 months of arrival in the UK. i.e saving £3000 in 3 months. One can hardly find its feet regardless of the job one may get. Accomodation within a month, energy cost, transport etc will at least be £1000. So it means he must have been earning after tax £2000 a month which is almost impossible for a new arrival. His story is too good to be true and cannot be generalised. You forgot the few Nigerians who now come get here prepared, they have sponsored jobs mainly or are professionals with jobs waiting. Work provides housing or match them we co-workers to buddy up. Some might live with relatives for up to 4 months. If your take home is £2000 a month and you live with your Aunty, can't you save "1000 a month? If you get to live in a carer's quarter and pay £450 as rent in a month cant you save £1000 a month? Now if your agency that you work for sends you to live in care then you do not need to pay rent, this can go on as long as the client is alive. I can go on and on,Im saying this cos I know the ins and out, you don't. |

franchasng: Lol, so every Nigerian that desires to migrate to UK is a Nurse or a Doctor or Radiographer or in the medical field? And for your info, UK employers are no longer that desperate to sponsor Nigerians outside UK for work visa.
They were some time last year and early 2022, but not anymore due to influx of Nigerians, Indians, Filipinos, etc into the UK via study route and spouse sponsorship which has provided them with more than enough readily employees in UK.
The opportunities are getting slimmer by the day for Nigerians.
I know at least 3 or more registered nurses in Nigeria who have passed IELTS and even UK nursing board exam but are unable to get job from Nigeria due to scarcity of UK employees ready to sponsor Nigerian medical professionals still in Nigeria compared to few years ago.
The easiest option for Nigerians with the finance is study route for now. You asked a question and I gave a sugestion, U did not need to respond with all these long statement, That information might not be of value to you but might be to someone else.My cozen landed lastnight via that route, her Husband started the process September this year! |

Abi did you borrow money and japa U still dont gerriit, Japa is fast lane, quick way to have initial money only if You have a plan and stick to it.I know a lady who just came via sponsorship route, she spent up to 6m to get here, she pack up her building material shop to do so.Now he has a plan sending 6m back to Nigeria nah change for hand cos as it stands that's less the £8k.U can imagine how long it took to gather N6m via trade in such way. So I think she is targeting N50m to go back Nigeria continue teh Biz she left, not only with that, plus a shiny Blue passport too. Kids future secured too. |

Yeah you're in a much better position with 70k salary and a 70k deposit but you still won't be able to afford the 450k house either Its easy for a person with such salary to borrow, it all adds up. People who own these houses in such rate are on that salary bracket |

gypsey: Maybe, besides i didn't confine menial jobs to nigerians alone, i meant, in general. I have come across many nigerians in menial jobs. By menial jobs what did you think i meant? Anyone working at a train station cleaning, checking tickets, train conductors, traffick wardens, waiter in a restuarant, refuse loader or a road sweeper, all are classed as menial jobs. Nigerians do these jobs. Jobs like Restaurant Waiters, Refuse loaders, road sweepers are not for Nigerians, these are mainly done by Eastern Europeans. Traffic Wardens are no longer called that as the name changed by Law, they are now called Civil Enforcement Officers and their Job is now divers, they enforce any law or B/Law by the council that the police do not enforce, They are now above the £30k margin for starters. With Road sweepers I will agree that that's a menial Job but this is populated by eastern Europeans as no need to speak English and they work by themselves. They are vastly Employed by their own Agencies which more often than non owned by an Eastern European firm. I laugh you are calling a train Conductor job Menial their pay is btw £23-£35k a year. Vast majority of them you see on trains already hold a train drivers licence just waiting for positions. |
