Untill the 19th century there was no such thing as yoruba and when the term was born, it only meant people from oyo kingdom.

Awolowo and his political group among others created what you guys now call yoruba today. And us Edo are not part of it. Nor are our Itsikiri brothers. We all voted to not be part of the yoruba dominated western region.

The yoruba of today is either a former dahomian, a slave returnee or an oyo, or some other indigenous tribesman who accepted the yoruba tag. We are not yoruba, we are Edo, that is our ethnicity and it predates yours.

Needless to say, Akoko-Edo are Edo (and not yoruba) like their name suggests.

Nigeria’s fastest man, Enoch Adegoke has qualified for the men’s 100 metre final of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after clocking 1o.00 seconds to come second in heat 2 of the semi final race.

Adegoke trailed Britain’s reigning European champion, Zharnel Hughes who won the heat 2 semis with 9.98 seconds.

He had on Saturday defeated the fastest man in the world this year and seventh fastest of all-time, USA’s Trayvon Brommel in the first-round heat.

Adegoke will now compete for the medal later today against Simbine Akani (South Africa), Jacob Marcell (Italy), Zharnel Hughes (Great Britain), Kerley Fred (USA), Su Bingtian (China), Baker Ronnie (USA) and Andre De Grasse (Canada).

Also through to the semifinal is Ushoritse Itshekiri who placed third in his first round heat while Nigeria’s third entrant in the event, Divine Oduduru was disqualified for false starting.

Meanwhile Nwokocha failed to advance to the women’s 100m final after finishing fifth in her semifinal heat with another sub- 11.10 seconds performance, the second in two days.

The 20 year old performance has been remarkable after becoming the fastest Nigeria based athlete since Mercy Nku ran 11.04 seconds in 1997 in Benin City.

In the 100m hurdles Tobi Amusan ran 12.72 seconds to win her first round heat and keep her hope of becoming the second Nigerian to win a sprint hurdles medal at the Olympics after Glory Alozie won a silver medal in Sydney in 2000.

The 24 year old has been drawn to run from lane five in the first semifinal heat at 11.45 am (Nigeria time) on Saturday.
