A one-storey building on Clem road, close to Immaculate College, in Lagos in on fire.

The fire started a few minutes ago. Residents said the cause of the inferno is still unknown.

The Acting Director of Lagos State Fire Service Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the outbreak to our correspondent.

39-year-old porn star, Jesse Jane has been arrested for allegedly punching her boyfriend in the face and biting his hand.

Jane was arrested in Moore, Oklahoma on charges of domestic violence after the policemen who were called in finding her boyfriend with a bleeding left eye and a bite mark on his left hand on Wednesday, January 29.

Recounting how the incident occurred, Jesse's boyfriend said they were drinking the previous night after which he woke to see the famous porn star throwing his medication she claimed were steroids in the trash. He accused Jesse of attacking him after he confronted her.

The porn star on her own part accused her boyfriend of picking her up by the neck and throwing her to a wall. TMZ reported that the police said they found no injuries on the adult film star's body other than a small spot of dried blood on her forehead.

She was booked on a domestic violence charge after being arrested and hauled off to Cleveland County Jail. Jesse has however been released.

Lai Mohammed, minister of information, says he is not aware of the “Protection From Internet Falsehood and Manipulations Bill, 2019” before the national assembly.

Referred to as “social media bill”, it is being sponsored by Mohammed Musa, senator representing Niger east. The bill seeks to regulate social media.

Despite sparking controversy, it has since passed second reading at the senate.

But speaking in an interview with DW’s Tim Sebastian, Mohammed said such a bill does not exist, asking who authored it.

“Who is the author of that bill, I am not even aware of it. There’s no such bill before the house. I can say that categorically and authoritatively that there’s no such bill before the house,” Mohammed said.

The minister also spoke on the “National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speeches Bill 2019’, which has been described as extreme and as an infringement on the fundamental human rights of Nigerians.

On the hate speech bill, Mohammed said it is ignorant for anyone to accuse the government of President Muhammadu Buhari of pushing it.

The bill seeks the death penalty for any person found guilty of any form of hate speech that results in the death of another person but Abdullahi Sabi, also a senator from Niger who is its sponsor, has agreed to review the aspect of the death penalty.

“What is even more shocking here is the ignorance of people. Here's what we call separation of power in major democracies. This particular bill you’re talking about is a bill submitted not by the executive but by the legislative arm of government, so how can you accuse the executive?” he asked.

“Do we have a choice which bill goes through or not. The government does not come in until when the bill has been passed.

“The only thing you can do as a president is refusing you're to assent to such a law. The law has not even been passed. It is still with the senate. So, how does the president stop it without being accused of dictatorship? We don’t micromanage the parliament.”

A corps member identified as Adebayo Mukaila, was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday January 28 after being attacked by 2 robbers in Osun State.

The deceased was attacked by two robbers riding on a motorcycle while on his way home after closing his shop where he sold recharge cards and also operated a money transfer bussiness through the Point of Sales (PoS) machine.

Though residents of the community he is serving in heard gunshots by 11pm on the day of the incident, they were reportedly scared to come out to rescue the corps member who was in company of a little girl believed to be his daughter.

An eyewitness told The Nation;

“Mukaila was attacked after closing his shop around 11.00pm on Tuesday by the hoodlums.

"They first disposed him of his bag containing cash, PoS machine, recharge cards and bunch of keys before they shot him on the head.

“The robbers thereafter took flight on their bike after killing him. Mukaila’s daughter, who was with him when the incident happened, cried for help but nobody could come forward initially to rescue him. The sound of the gunshot was too audible but no one could come out of the house.”

NYSC's spokesperson in the state, Catherine Otemuyiwa confirmed the incident and also revealed that they've visited the family of the deceased to condole with them.

A Ghanaian boxer and WBO Africa Super welterweight champion, Patrick Allotey risks getting sanctioned after being seen assaulting a football fan in a viral video.

The altercation is believed to have occurred on Sunday, January 26, during the football match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Allotey was spotted in the viral video asking the football fan to move from the spot he was standing on before removing his headset and subsequently dishing out three jabs to his face.

The assaulted football fan was left with a deep cut near his eye after the incident. Ghanaians who were angered by the incident are now calling on the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to sanction the boxer.

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced Mrs Damilola Ahmed Adeyeri and her son, Alaba Kareem Adeyeri, to 12 years’ imprisonment each for duping an American of $82,570.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke convicted the duo following their plea of guilty to four counts of “fraudulent trick business email compromise” during their arraignment on Tuesday.

He sentenced each defendant to three years’ imprisonment on each of the four counts filed against them by EFCC. The judge said the sentences would run concurrently.

This means Mrs Adeyeri and her son will spend a maximum of only three years in correctional services custody.

EFCC counsel, Bilikisu Buhari, told the court that mother and son conspired with one Kareem Russell, still at large, to defraud the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of American Cranes Manufacturing Company.

Buhari also called an EFCC investigator, Idi Musa as witness. They committed the offence in June 2017 and were arrested on September 6, 2019.

Musa testified that sometime in April 2019, the commission received a petition from FBI, stating that the official email address of American Cranes Manufacturing Company was hacked and the sum of $82, 570 was lost to the fraudsters.

Idi said Damilola was arrested on September 6, 2019, after which his mother was apprehended when she went to withdraw money from the bank upon hearing that EFCC was investigating her son.

She purchased properties in the name of her son with the money made from the fraud. The prosecutor said Mrs Adeyeri and her son carried out the fraud by “dishonestly representing yourselves as the CEO of American Cranes Manufacturing Company and thereafter you sent an email from personal@managements-securemail-office-portal.online with intent to gain advantage to yourselves.”

Lagos State has banned the operations of commercial motorcycles and tricycles in six local government areas in the state.

The affected LGs are the state capital Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, Apapa, Surulere and Eti Osa. The ban will come into effect on February 1. “After consultations with stakeholders, the State Security Council, in compliance with the extant Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, has decided to commence enforcement of the law which bans the operation of Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) in the following Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs),” Lagos State information and strategy commissioner Gbenga Omotosho said at a press conference.

The ban affects the local council development areas (LCDAs) under the LG. They are Apapa LG- Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Lagos Mainland LG – Yaba LCDA, Surulere LG- Itire-Ikate and Coker-Aguda LCDAs, Ikeja LG- Onigbongbo and Ojodu LCDAs, Eti-Osa LG- Ikoyi-Obalende and Iru/Victoria Island LCDAs, Lagos Island LG- Lagos Island East LCDA.

Omotosho said the ban is the first stage of the state government’s plan to sanitize its “roads and protect Lagosians from the negative effects of these illegal modes of transportation.” “The Law is very clear. Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) are banned on all highways, bridges and the listed roads,” Omotosho said.

The Bloomingdales terminator Jason Gilbertie of Norwalk is facing charges after causing an estimated $100,000 worth of damage at a Newark location.

The man was arrested for allegedly trashing the Bloomingdale’s cosmetics department at the brand new SoNo Collection.

He is charged with assault, criminal mischief, interfering with an officer and breach of peace. When officers arrived, they say they found the cosmetics department a mess, with glass display cases broken and merchandise knocked over. The incident was so loud, some customers mistook it for gunfire and hid.
Police say the incident began when Gilbertie punched a random shopper unprovoked, and then walked into Bloomingdale’s and started toppling display cases. When a security guard tried to stop him, Gilbertie allegedly got violent and punched the guard in the face. Once police arrived, Gilbertie was arrested after a brief struggle. Bond was set at $50,000.

21 year old UNN undergraduate allegedly attempted suicide after parents scolded him (photo)

21 year old undergraduate of the University of Nigeria Nsukka UNN, Obasi Augustine Chukwuemeka, was prevented from committing suicide at his home on Number 4 Alaba street Ejigbo busstop in Lagos state on January 7th.

According to a statement from Bala Elkana, the spokesperson of the Lagos state police command, an officer of Lagos State Neighbourhood Security Corps, alerted men of the Ejigbo Police Station that Chuckuemeka tied a rope in a loop around the ceiling fan in his home in preparation for committing suicide because he was scolded by his parents.

A swift response by operatives from Ejigbo Police Station prevented him from killing himself.

He was rescued and taken to the hospital for medical examination.

Nigerian man among 176 dead victims of Ukrainian airplane shot down by Iran
A Nigerian man identified as Dauda Onoruoiza has been confirmed as one of the 176 dead victims of the Ukrainian airplane that was shot down by Iran.

The Kogi-born victim of the airplane crash was working with American airplane manufacturers, Boeing before the sad incident occurred. He was reportedly on a three months training with Boeing in Ukraine and was attached to the Boeing 737-800 aircraft to study its mechanical noise and report back to the company ahead of its maintenance scheduled on Monday January 13 in Ukraine.

Recall that the airplane which was bound for Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, had 167 passengers and nine crew members from several countries. Asides the Nigerian, the crash victims include 82 Iranians, at least 63 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians.

The crash occurred just after Iran fired missiles at Iraqi military bases housing US troops in retaliation for a drone strike at Baghdad airport that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani, who was one of Iran's most powerful and influential military leaders.

Iran admitted to shooting down the airplane unintentionally on Saturday January 11, after initially denying the act and refusing to turn in its black box.

Woman releases video purportedly showing police officers beating her friend in Lagos

A woman has accused Nigerian police officers of brutality. She said they dragged her phone from her then allegedly beat her friend.

@MariOwonifari shared a video of her friend allegedly being harassed by some men whose faces cannot be seen in the video. She said the men are police officers.

In the video, the officers are heard intimidating the woman but she informed them that she knows her rights. This seemed to anger the officers and they got violent.

@MariOwonifari said the incident happened on Sheraton Link Rd, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos.

Sharing the video, she wrote: "It’s sad that@PoliceNG turns a blind eye to it’s officers who harass and rob it’s citizens of their rights, money, and time. At about 12am, my friend Taiwo was hit by an officer with badge ‘448204’. This same officer snatched my phone off me. This happened on Sheraton Link Rd."

She added: "Stop putting us at risk with untrained and underpaid Policemen with Guns! Everyday we lose our properties, monies, rights and lives to @PoliceNG!! I’m a victim and it must stop!!"

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has disclosed that he never saw himself as a politician until 2018 even though he held public offices for over a decade.

The Lagos State Governor made the disclosure on Thursday December 12, at a lecture he delivered at the 3rd Alumni Lecture of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association which was held at the University campus.

He said;

“I saw myself purely as a professional – a technocrat- in politics and public service.

"The opportunity to run as governor was a bigger responsibility than anything I had ever done, and, and unlike everything before, not a role to which I could be simply appointed. I can say that it was at that point that I became a politician”.
