bigfrancis21: Honestly, I don't know. Someone from Ebonyi should be able to tell us that.
The fact remains that the earliest academically documented evidence of the usage of oyibo in Nigeria was by the account of Olaudah Equiano, an ex Igbo slave who was born circa 1745 and the location was in Igboland around mid 1750s. Olaudah was captured when he was 11 years old or so and his memories of his native birth place were from his childhood days in Igbo land (which should be around the late 1740s and early 1750s).
The next academic evidence comes from the visitation of Simon Jonas, son of an ex Igbo slave born in Sierra Leone, to Onitsha in 1832 and being referred to as 'oh eboe ojii' by the natives.
Everything else is mere speculation. em ok tnx. go check out my Sunday stew and jollof rice recipe in food section ok |

bigfrancis21: For the sake of not derailing this thread into Igbo vs. Non Igbo, that is not relevant. Politically, many rivers Igboid groups identify as their own individual group. I feel we should not force an Igbo identity on them. ok what do Ebonyi use for white man den |
Culture › Re: Origin Of The Word " Oyibo".. by ewa26: 7:08pm On May 16, 2017 |
pazienza: Because Igbos are a conglomerate of tribes that speak a groups of dialects that form a continuum with mutual intelligibility decreasing the further two Igbo speaking group are from each other.
Take for example, the word Maize, it's called Oka in Enugu, Anambra, Enuani areas, Ukwuoru in parts o Abia and Imo, Ezza people in Ebonyi call it Akpe.
Yet we are all Igbos. Every large ethnic group have such diversity, it's this diversity in used words that serve as synonyms in the written language. oo ok tnx bet wait, what do people in Ebonyi and in d rivers Igbo use for white man why are we avoiding them two is it all about anambla enoogo delta egbo imo and Abia |

AbakalikiPress: Some parts of Igboland don't call white people Oyibo, they use Bekee. So that explanation kinda does not make sense.
Also the Igbos that do use it, why don't they use Onyigbo or Onyebo if the words actually came from Onye Igbo?
Besides the PROPER Igbo word for white people is "Ndi Ocha" not Oyibo. You can never find the word Oyibo when you are having a deep Igbo conversation. Whereas even conc Yoruba people use Oyinbo in everyday speech and formalized academic literature.
The Wikipedia Igbo page for whites for example, has the title "Ndi Ocha" https://ig.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ndi_ocha
The Yoruba Wikipedia page for whites has the title "Awon Oyinbo" https://yo.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%80w%E1%BB%8Dn_%C3%B2y%C3%ACnb%C3%B3 em ok, which part of igboland do use oyibo and who will be saying bekee then |

right, av been online and looked at the recipes and I want to do this again ok. pls, am new to d cooking so no be 2 ash bikonu
em, you will need chicken, thyme, onion, dawadawa and whole crayfish, em ugu leave and red oil
first, you season d chicken wit onion and thyme (im using thyme bcoz abi that's wat we use for shikin), den grind d egusi and opeye-karafish. Then remove d shike from d stockpot, add d egusi and let it boil. Den, once is caked, you put your em distin (d spices) and red oil and let it boil for 7 minutes, that the time when all the spices will come together and add nice aromas. den ugu is soft so it will go last, add dat when d egusi like don cook finish, simmer for a minute and serve with iyan/eba.
Or sef, if you wan make it in d real delta ibo way, you wi no add palm oil bcoz we make d egusi ocha in ogwashi uku and Asaba ok, no red oil for d otentic Anioma one |

Hearthynukeh: The difference is the spice.. .the igbos love to add too much of spice in their meal...too much of spice can't give you ur desire taste...but dey don't eat much salt....but they can add varieties of spice to their jollof rice....Jollof don't need much spice...Ur Chicken or meat stock, maggi, good curry and thyme, bay leaves, Garlic and ginger, Onion can give ur jollof rice good taste.....The Yorubas don't really add different spices to their jollof rice.... ok what spices exactly will an Igbo put compared to d yoruba |

Probz: Here’s a basic recipe I use that works every time.
1. Mix a small tin of De Rica with water and add your spices (curry, Maggi, white pepper). 2. Fry with onion, ginger/garlic and scotch bonnet till the water dries. 3. Add beef stock and the rice (and add bay leaves) and let it cook.
That works for about 2 cups of rice and that’s usually the quantity I make in one go. I like my rice grainy and a little underdone so I don’t usually parboil but wash till the water runs clear. But you can parboil if you want, just until you can cut the rice with your fingernails. Stop the parboiling right there else you’ll be making a mushy red mess. And remember that jollof rice cooks mainly by steaming and not by boiling it in loads of water. The water should be more than the rice during the second cooking but not much more.
Roast tatashe and green pepper and add the blend to the tomato paste if you want a smokier owambe jollof.
That's just a standard lazy way of making jellof. You can go ahead and vary the protein and add whatever spices you want but make sure Maggi and curry are there. oo tnx, pls how would I go about getting the really smoky one? is roasting d pepe (presumably in oven) enough or should d rice burn small? |
