American philanthropist and Microsoft Co - founder, Bill Gates , says Nigeria does not need to spend too much on acquiring COVID -19 vaccines but should rather focus more on revitalising the weak and underfunded health sector especially the primary health care centres . Gates said this while responding to a question posed by The PUNCH during an interview with select African journalists on Tuesday . The Minister of Health, Dr . Osagie Ehanire , had in December informed the Senate that Nigeria would require over N 400 bn to vaccinate 70 per cent of Nigeria ’ s population at $8 per vaccine. When asked if it was appropriate for Nigeria to spend such a huge sum of money on vaccine acquisition in the midst of other issues plaguing the health sector, Gates said , “ There is no doubt that the impact of putting money into the health system particularly the primary healthcare system will be very high in terms of saving children’ s lives and you are absolutely right . “Nigeria should not divert the very limited money that it has for health into trying to pay a high price for COVID vaccines .” Gates said Nigeria could also rely largely on groups like GAVI the Vaccine Alliance for COVID -19 vaccines . He argued that investing in the primary health system would improve coverage and build Nigeria ’ s response in tackling other diseases . The philanthropist added , “The key thing would be , Nigeria is still GAVI eligible and so for a lot of those vaccines , they will come through this GAVI facility that we raise money for and health in Nigeria is generally underfunded. “If you look at the primary health centres in the North , in particular if you look at the vaccine coverage rates , there are literally millions of lives that can be saved if the primary health system operates at a level that some other countries at the same wealth of Nigeria if the system was this good . “So , I am an advocate for the government to have more resources and prioritise health . Obviously , I am not a voter in Nigeria so Nigeria can decide that independently. My advice is ( that ) the primary health care system is what is super important .” https://punchng.com/fixing-health-sector-important-than-buying-covid-19-vaccines-bill-gates-tells-fg/ |

A 20-second video captured the moment some personnel of the Nigerian Navy in their barracks believed to be in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, screamed and danced over the development. There was jubilation in some military barracks across the country, when the news of the sacking of the former service chiefs filtered in on Tuesday and the announcement of their replacements. A 20-second video captured the moment some personnel of the Nigerian Navy in their barracks believed to be in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, screamed and danced over the development. Sources told SaharaReporters that there was also jubilation in some army barracks across the country over the announcement. President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed new service chiefs and finally fired the Chief of Defence Chief, General Abayomi Olonisakin, Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok- Ete Ibas, and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, after the four had spent five years and five months in office. Although Buhari said on Tuesday that he accepted their resignation letters, the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, already clarified in the past that the military chiefs could not resign and had to be laid off by the Commander-In-Chief. Buhari had on July 13, 2015, appointed Olonisakin, Buratai, Ibas, and Abubakar. In a State House press release on Tuesday, Buhari’s Special Adviser, Femi Adesina, said the new service chiefs were Major-General Leo Irabor as the CDS, Major-General Ibrahim Attahiru as the army chief, Rear Admiral A. Z. Gambo as the naval chief and Air-Vice Marshal I. O. Amao as the new air chief. “People dey happy say they don change CNS o,” one of the navy personnel said in the video. “Who will not be happy that they were replaced? It was long overdue, they had become principalities and they had stagnated the career progression. I don’t think they resigned. They were fired. The three service chiefs were supposed to visit the Ministry of Defence headquarters, Ship House, on Tuesday afternoon but the meeting was cancelled in the last minute when the announcement filtered into the country,” a Ministry of Defence top official told SaharaReporters. Olonisakin is the longest serving CDS since 1999. The closest to him was Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi (retd.), who served for four years and 29 days between May 29, 1999 and June 27, 2003. Also, Buratai is the longest serving COAS since 1999. The closest to him was Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), who spent three years and four months in office; between September 2010 and January 2014. Ibas is also the longest serving CNS since 1999, while the closest person to him was Vice Admiral S. O. Afolayan, who served for four years, between 2001 and 2005. SaharaReporters had exclusively reported last week that the outgoing military chiefs had awarded four Sport Utility Vehicles, four Peugeot vehicles, among other juicy retirement benefits to themselves, according to the 2017 Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service for Officers, which their administration revised. SaharaReporters had obtained the new HTACOS 2017 which revealed that the military chiefs will get security staff of over 40 soldiers as well as domestic and foreign medical cover. http://saharareporters.com/2021/01/27/jubilation-dancing-military-barracks-over-sacking-buratai-others

Hon. Salihu Dovo, the Council Chairman of Ardo- kola local government area of Taraba, has been killed by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers. The council boss' nephew, Timothy Aminu, who attempted to obstruct his abduction was also killed in the attack on Sunday. Police Public Relations Officer of Taraba Command, DSP David Misal, confirmed the incident to The Nation at Jalingo Federal Medical Centre Mortuary. He said the gunmen invaded the deceased’s residence located at the Sabon-Gari area of Jalingo at about 1am on Sunday, shooting sporadically for over 30 minutes before abducting the council boss. He said Dovo was dragged by the gunmen, who headed towards the River Lamurde, the border between Jalingo and Ardo-Kola local government areas. According to the PPRO, local vigilantes and police trailed the gunmen, who shot the victim on noticing they could not escape with him. He said the gunmen dumped his corpse in Nahuta village across the river Lamurde boundary between Ardo-Kola and Jalingo council areas. The PPRO further confirmed Aminu, who attempted to block the roads to prevent abduction of the council boss, was also killed. The police spokesman said arrests have been made over the incident. “We have made some arrests and I can assure you that the killers of the council boss and his nephew would be brought to book,” he assured. The remains of the council boss and his nephew have been deposited at Federal Medical Centre Mortuary Jalingo. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2021/1/gunmen-kidnap-and-kill-taraba-local-government-chairman.html

We should at all times try to control our anger. This story is sad. |
The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore herdsmen group has called on the Federal Government to heed the call for the restructuring of the country to allow the Fulani go their way . The National Secretary of the group, Saleh Alhassan, said in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday that herdsmen were being marginalised in the country and that it was best if they were on their own where they would be protected . There have been calls for the restructuring of the country , with many southern groups insisting that it was the only way the country could move forward , while northern groups have largely been divided on the issue . Resource control, fairness and the allegations of killings , invasion of farmlands and people ’ s properties , kidnapping and other criminal activities against some herdsmen had fuelled the calls for restructuring of the country . The herders / farmers clashes had also increased the distrust among the ethnic groups , with some individuals from the different zones issuing quit notice to some others . Alhassan however told Sunday PUNCH that it was wrong to punish a group of people for the sins of some . He said , “ We don’ t support crime . So, I ’ m not saying there are no Fulani that are criminals , there are , like other tribes , but don’ t destroy their profession. It’ s not good for the country . If everything busts , it ’ s to the advantage of the herders because we are not even enjoying the federation. “We are even bidding for restructuring of the country ; let every part go , so we can say this is where we are . As it is now , there is no form of marginalisation we are not seeing in this country . Everywhere we are being marginalised . You think we will accept Nigeria where we don ’ t have access to land to feed our animals and you think there will be peace ?” When asked if he thinks restructuring would solve the herders /farmers crisis, he said , “ Quite fundamentally. If we leave today now and if there is no oil revenue , won’ t they pay attention to animal rearing ? If we restructure the country and the South -West region says they won ’ t accept cattle unless they are brought to the market or supermarket , it’ s okay by us. “The mistake people make is that they think when they put pressure on herders they are getting at President ( Muhammadu ) Buhari . Buhari has no relationship with the herders . That is the truth. When people say he is our grandpatron , was Jonathan from the South -South not our grandpatron ? “If the President is a Fulani , it doesn’ t in any way affect the life of a herder. In fact, they are worse off under Buhari . What are they benefitting ? They don ’ t access any government facility or social amenity, yet they are responsible for the bulk of animal protein we produce in this country . I think it’ s deliberate for people to think otherwise . “Buhari has not done anything for us other than creating enemies for us. Herders are being chased around . Let us look at the larger picture and not allow enemies penetrate us. If Buhari loves the herders , he would have created the grazing reserves for them .” https://punchng.com/restructure-let-fulani-go-their-way-miyetti-allah-tells-fg/

As the seven-day ultimatum Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, issued herdsmen occupying Ondo state forests expires tomorrow January 24, the National President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Abdullahi Bodejo has declared that nobody has the power to remove Fulani herdsmen from the state’s forests. In an interview with The Sun, Bodejo claimed the Fulani's own all the land in Nigeria. He said the Fulanis have settled in the Ondo Forest reserves for over 250 years and will not obey anybody to leave the place. Read excerpts from the interview below Following allegations of kidnapping and robbery carried out by Fulani herdsmen, Ondo State government has given them seven-day ultimatum to leave the forests in the state, what is your reaction? The Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu doesn’t have any right to give such ultimatum to our people. People, including Fulani voted for him to be the governor; so he should be the governor of everybody in the state. Fulani have been in the forests he is talking about even before he was born; they have been there for over 250 years. No matter how dangerous a forest maybe, Fulani would go and settle there. After staying there for a long time and their cow dung turns the place fertile, people would begin to come there to farm and to settle and from then, they begin to make claims that our cattle were destroying their farms. We are suing the governor and seeking injunction restraining him and others from carrying out his threat. But even at that, nobody, no power can send the herdsmen out of Ondo State. When are you going to court as the ultimatum will soon expire? We are making consultations with our legal team. But before then, the governor and his people should stop embarrassing our people in the forests and all their businesses. No any herdsman will obey the governor; the herdsmen will not step an inch out of Ondo forests; they are going nowhere. We won’t obey the governor; it is only the constitution of Nigeria that we obey. We have been in that area before he was born, how can he just grow up and ask us to leave; no Fulani will leave that place. What are his reasons for the quit notice? He alleged that it is the herdsmen that are kidnapping and robbing people and they operate from the forests We are not in support of any form of criminality- armed robbery, kidnapping, gun running etc. These crimes are the reasons we have the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Army, DSS, even Civil Defence to nab perpetrators and there are courts everywhere to try them and if found guilty, appropriate punishment meted out to them. The governor is the chief security officer of the state, there is no reason he should single out one ethnic group for the crimes committed in the state. He is supposed to accommodate more Fulani in the state and not to drive them out. Driving them out is not the solution. I have just concluded a meeting with my fellow Fulani and we have found out that some people will adorn Fulani attire to carry out various crimes. How can Fulani man living in the forest kidnap and ask people to pay ransom ranging from N5 million to N10 million. What would he be doing with that kind of money inside forest; if you pay herdsmen N20 million, N10 million, N5 million in the forest, where would he carry the money to and what will he be doing with such money? Check the leaders of those criminals; let the governors identify who the criminals are. They are not Fulani. He just wants to use that as an excuse to drive our people away from his state. It is just giving a dog a bad name to hang it; the herdsmen are not the kidnappers, let him carry out proper investigations. Let him know this, no any person in this country can push us out of the forests. If it becomes so hot and your people decide to go, where would you be headed? The first thing is that nothing will make us take such decision. If you apply force and out of a hundred Fulani, you kill 95 of them. The remaining five will go back there and continue with their grazing. They have been there for up to 250 years. They have been there before the state was even created. All the lands in this country belong to the Fulani, but we don’t have any business to do with land if it doesn’t have areas for grazing; if the land doesn’t have cow food, we won’t have any business with it. We don’t sell land, we don’t farm. What we consider is the areas that have cow food. If the place is good for grazing, we don’t need anybody’s permission to go there. Nigerians should know that our association, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore is not backing anybody who is a kidnapper, armed robber, and we are calling for law enforcement agents to go after all these criminals and deal decisively with them. The criminality all over the country is the more reason we want to fully implement our vigilante system; we want to enter all the forests in this country to check these bandits in the forests that are causing these problems and denting the good image of Fulani ethnic group. We can’t wait any longer; we are sending our vigilantes into the forests to fish out these criminals – those intimidating the herdsmen and stealing their cows and secondly, these bandits causing problems in this country. It is only the Fulani that can enter any forest and chase out these bandits. Why can’t your people live with the people in the community instead going to live inside forests? We don’t need cities or towns. If you dash us FCT Abuja or the city of Lagos, we won’t have anything to do with it. We want a place where we continue to practice our age long culture of cattle rearing. We inherited it from our forefathers and it will continue till the end of the world. People are using propaganda to spoil Fulani name, and desperate politicians are in the forefront. Any governor that is drumming up on the Fulani herdsmen issue, watch well, he has issue or problem whether political or otherwise in his state. It is possible that Akeredolu is fighting a political battle, it may be 2023 election and that is why he is playing up this Fulani herdsmen issue. It is the same with Benue State governor, Ortom, when he was not performing; he started to play up Fulani herdsmen and farmers issue to draw support from his people. For almost six years, he hasn’t done any work in his state; he is talking about herdsmen and his people. Fulani can settle in any bush or forest they want the moment they have cows. We agreed that our children will pursue education and other activities other people are doing in town, but even me, I’m not comfortable staying in the city, up till now my house is inside village. Why is it that you would not take permission from the owners of the forests before you settle there? Which forest, who has the forest? Any person who thinks he owns any forest should be taken to psychiatric hospital. Nobody owns any forest; forests are for Nigerians. Fulani herdsmen have the right to move into any forest and settle there for their business. Why do farmers go and cultivate thousands of hectare of land and fence it, who gave them that land? Nobody is born with a land in this country; people were just moving from one place to another for settlement. Fulani are settling in every community, but we are not claiming land, we are only interested on how our cows will have food to eat. Fulani can’t value 100 people’s lives like he can value his one cow because since he was born, he doesn’t have any business except that cow. The cow is like his own brothers and sisters. If anything happens to his cow, do you think he can leave you? You have two or three storey buildings and you park your cars , do you fold your hands and watch somebody come to that house carry your cars, your clothes, your wife, destroy the buildings? You must fight. The Fulani man values his cow just as you value your brother and sister and you go all out to protect them. They love their cows beyond description, you can’t separate them from their cows to go and stay inside town or city. The cows have names. The way you give your children names when they were born is the same way they name their cows. Even a person who has one thousand cows, those cows have individual names and he knows them by name; the cows have fathers, grandfathers and grandchildren. What you have in human beings – the ways names are given to people, the same way Fulani give names to their cows. We are cow lovers , that is why sometimes if you kill their cows somewhere they go there to look for justice, because they see like somebody has killed their brothers; they must go to see who did that and they won’t leave that person. You said that only the Fulani will drive out the bandits in the forests, why is it that they have not done so in the forests of Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and Niger? Those bandits are not Fulani, but they are damaging the name of Fulani and that is why this our vigilantes will go into all the forests in this country to chase out all the bandits. Whatever atrocity that the bandits commit is hanged on Fulani neck. These bandits are equally killing herdsmen in their numbers in various forests, but many people don’t understand this, and the moment they see herdsmen in the bush, they will tag them bandits or see them as kidnappers. This is disturbing us as it is eroding on our credibility; more so, useless people, desperate politicians and social media warriors have latched on this to poison everybody’s mind against Fulani ethnic group. Why not your vigilante clear Sambisa Forest, which is so vast so that your people will settle and halt these conflicts in many states? Borno State governor Zulum said he will give Fulani people Sambisa forest, we are waiting for him and when the approval is given I will be the first person to go and live there. We are also waiting for the federal government to put infrastructures there, and then we move in. Herdsmen in this country are suffering too much; as they move their cattle from one place to the other, some people who want to steal their cows will organise and even kill them, especially these people they are giving uniform in the name of vigilantes. These people are causing confusion, you just pack some people, give them uniforms to go and drive out Fulani people in the forests. Yes, the Amotekun; I’m calling on the federal government to ban it. Since the federal government has left Amotekun, that is the reason we want to implement our own vigilante, whose operation will be all over the country, not only one state; we will operate everywhere you find Fulani people in this country, we can go there, enter the forests and chase the bandits away. We can help the Nigeria Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the federal government and relevant security agencies to end this banditry in the country. The Ondo State governor has a secret agenda for asking our people to leave his state, not the reasons he stated. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/no-power-can-remove-us-from-ondo-forests-bodejo-miyetti-allah-leader/ |

He told SaharaReporters that despite assurance by the police and the people of the state, his house was burnt in the presence of security agents. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2021/jan/23/seriki.jpg Photo credit: SaharaReporters According to SaharaReporters, the settlement of the Seriki Fulani of Oyo State, Alhaji Saliu Abdulkadir, has been set ablaze. The place was allegedly set on fire by aggrieved youths on Friday night. Abdulkadir told SaharaReporters in Ibadan that he, his wives and children were sent out of the settlement, adding that 11 vehicles and houses were burnt in the process. He told SaharaReporters that despite assurance by the police and the people of the state, his house was burnt in the presence of security agents. He said, "As we speak, we are in the bush. Our cars, numbering about 11, have been burnt. Some of my children sustained injuries and we are looking for a way to get them to hospital. My children have left their houses for the bush. We need the government to help us. Police, Operation Burst and other security agencies were there when they set my house ablaze." Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Jiji, also confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the phone. He said, "As we usually say, not all Fulani people are evil. Good people are among us. What can we call this now? The man is a gentleman and see how he was chased out of his house. We need the government to act now," he said. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2021/jan/23/seriki1.jpg Sunday Adeyemo, an agitator for Oodua Republic, better known as Sunday Igboho, on Friday visited some Oyo communities to confirm compliance of Fulani people with the seven-day ultimatum he had given them last Thursday to leave Ibarapa and Igangan areas of Oyo State. Fulani herdsmen have largely been blamed for the growing cases of killing and kidnapping in southwestern Nigerian. Speaking with SaharaReporters early Friday morning, he affirmed his decision to visit the communities despite the threats by the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, to arrest him. In a video shared online, Igboho was well received during his visit to the Igangan community as scores of people converged for his reception. The people were seen jubilating; dancing and singing. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2021/jan/23/seriki2.jpg Addressing the people, Igboho said, "The Fulani have gone, we have sent them out of our land and they cannot come back again. Kidnappers cannot rule over us, they can't take over our land from us. It belongs to us; they should stop threatening. "Those who live with us peacefully; we are not fighting them but how will a visitor claim one's house from him. If you live with us in peace, we have no problem with you but if you decide to kidnap and kill us, we don't want you here. I assure Yoruba people, particularly those in Oyo State, that there is no danger. "This one we have started here in Oyo State will not end here. We are going to other parts of the South-West. Tell Fulani herdsmen in Ekiti State, Ondo State and Osun States; in fact, in all South- West states that they should get ready for us because we are coming." In an interview with SaharaReporters, Igboho also alleged that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had not brought anything good to the people of the South-West except social vices. Igboho, therefore, called on the president to take the Fulani out of Yorubaland. "Buhari should come and evacuate his people from our land, we don't want them again. They are just punishing the youths; they have turned us to nothing, why? The educated youth don't have jobs, nothing, the gain now is to kill and kidnap us. We are still on the unemployment issue, we have accepted our fate, should we not be in peace and enjoy security again? It's enough,” he said. Earlier in the week, Igboho also alleged that when he visited Seriki Fulani of Oyo State, Alhaji Saliu Abdulkadir, at his home to urge him to do something about the killings and kidnappings being carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the state, some Fulani people there threatened him with guns and also shot at him. He alleged that one Fulani man also brought out an axe to threaten him. http://saharareporters.com/2021/01/22/yoruba-youths-have-driven-me-my-wife-children-out-our-home-burnt-our-house-11-cars-—oyo |
Mohammed, son of Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), says his mother, Zeenat, has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Kaduna correctional centre. El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in detention since 2015 after some of his followers clashed with soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna. The IMN leader is standing trial over allegations of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace, among other charges. In a statement on Thursday, Mohammed said Zeenat has not been evacuated to an isolation centre for treatment despite informing authorities at the correctional centre of her status. “Six days ago, after a routine visit to the Kaduna State prison by my parents’ doctors, my mother complained of fatigue, fever and a complete loss of the ability to smell,” Mohammed said. “The doctors decided to carry out a number of standard tests in order to understand what the problem was. Among the tests that were carried out was a test for the novel coronavirus. “This was a routine procedure and it is important to state that she has been denied treatment for acute medical conditions, including severe arthritis of the knee for years now. “Meanwhile, the COVID-19 test came back positive. I imagined that due to the diligent way in which the prison management had been conducting and managing the facility, a COVID-19 outbreak would be extremely unlikely. “But once I heard of the test result, my first action was to ensure that it was tried, tested and confirmed. I expected that following our risky entrance into the predictable petri dish of Kaduna State prison for what it is, the person in charge of Kaduna State prison would officially do his job and inform the State Governor, Nasir El- Rufai, and the chain of command that the current campaign of torture, extortion, corruption and murder has come to this and my mother, Zeenah Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, needs to be immediately hospitalised. “My mother is still in Kaduna prison at the moment, yet to be hospitalised and to receive proper health care.” Mohammed further alleged that his mother’s COVID-19 positive status is being used as an “assassination tool”. https://www.thecable.ng/el-zakzakys-son-my-mother-contracted-covid-19-in-kaduna-prison |

A Nigerian man, Sam Ineni who is a military officer has reportedly attacked a photographer, MostHigh in Ogun state. It was gathered that the man had planned to marry his fiancee and contracted the photographer for prewedding shoot. However, the man later broke up with the woman and went to the photographer to demand for refund. According to multiple sources, Sam had paid for pre-wedding photoshoot only to return yesterday, to allegedly demand a refund stating that his introduction to his girlfriend had been cancelled. “The pictures we took for him had already gone into circulation as his girlfriend had posted it on social media. We were shocked when he came to our store to demand a refund because he called off the wedding. We refused and he caused chaos hence destroying our equipment. He also assaulted our staff, collected his money and demanded that we pay for his t-fare. It’s disheartening that an officer of the law could do this to a small business owner,” a source said. Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media are presently thanking God that the fiancee is no longer engaged to the military man. BBOG co-convener and activist, Aisha Yesufu has taken to Twitter this morning to lambast blast youths from Northern Nigeria popularly known as Arewa Youths after they attacked her for supporting same-sex marriage. Mrs Yesufu revealed on Monday that homosexuality was not a new discovery in Nigeria, as she reveals she witnessed it 37 years ago. The activist also stated on Twitter that the LGBTQ community is not tolerant and are bullies. The youths in the northern region of Nigeria attacked her over her support for gay rights in Nigeria. They argued that she should never be in support of such things as it is against the tenets of Islam which she practices. Ms. Yesufu did not take their attacks lying low and has hit back at them, describing them as ”Oxygen Wasting Vessels”. She wrote in multiple tweets; "Youth in Nigeria will pick up an issue and focus on it until the government is forced to do something about it but the ones in arewa twitter with their #BambiAlaMentality jump from handle to handle to transfer the aggression they cannot transfer to the parents that abandoned them Buhari looked at Arewa twitter youth and their #BambiAlaMentality and decided to use the brush on them to brush every other youth across the country and call them lazy youth. Naaah it is the ones on Arewa twitter that are beyond lazy You are here shouting haram. Biko who are you fooling with that sanctimonious attitude? Isn’t a father sleeping with his daughter haram? Isn’t a mother sleeping with her step son haram? Isnt an old man putting a little girl inside babbanriga haram and molesting They will be talking Islam and they will be shouting as if they have the patent of Islam. If it is to talk morality they are number one but let it be about practice they are nowhere to be found. Small thing “stop practicing our islam” which Islam do you own? The one that many do not know how to perform ablution or that there is ghusl bath? Or the one where you commit murder in the name of riot? Pope Francis has changed Catholic Church law so that women can act as readers and altar servers in liturgical celebrations, while reaffirming they cannot be priests. In an unexpected apostolic letter published Jan. 11, the pontiff says he is making the change to recognize a "doctrinal development" that has occurred in recent years. That change, the pope says, "shines a light on how some ministries instituted by the church have as their foundation that common condition of baptism and the royal priesthood received in the Sacrament of Baptism." Francis' new letter, titled Spiritus Domini and issued 'motu proprio,' changes the Code of Canon Law to explicitly allow women to be installed in the Catholic Church as lectors and acolytes. Lectors are ministers who proclaim readings at Mass and other liturgical celebrations, while Acolytes or Altar servers are ministers who typically assist priests in preparing the altar during the Mass or in distributing communion. Before now, women in some Catholic churches already serve as readers and altar servers, the church's canon law had technically only allowed for their service on a temporary basis. The pope's change, which replaces "lay men" as the category of those who can formally serve in the ministries with "lay persons," would appear to require all global Catholic bishops to accept women into those roles. The Jan. 11 letter was published alongside a letter from the pope to Cardinal Luis Ladaria, the prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In that letter, Francis again mentions John Paul II's ban against ordaining women to the priesthood but adds that "for non-ordained ministries it is possible, and today appears opportune, to go beyond that reservation." Francis tells Ladaria that offering both men and women the opportunity to serve as lectors and acolytes "will increase the recognition … of the precious contribution that many lay people, including women, offer to the life and mission of the church." "The choice to confer these offices to women … will make more real in the church everyone's participation in the work of evangelization," the pope continues. Francis tells Ladaria that it will be the role of national bishops' conferences to consider possible criteria for who in their communities could serve as lectors and acolytes, and says he is also directing the Vatican's worship congregation to update its norms about the two ministries to reflect the change to canon law. https://apnews.com/article/europe-pope-francis-3bdcad94325be16ee2993f61eb17c5a0

Desmond Yunana, a reverend of Anglican Church Nigeria based in Borno state, says Abubakar Sheaku, Boko Haram leader, is critically ill and wants prayer from Nigerians. Delivering a sermon in church on Sunday, Yuana said last night, he had a “revelation” that the Boko Haram leader’s health condition is very bad. He said Shekau, who needs prayers from both Christian and Muslims residents of Maiduguri, is ready to ask for forgiveness. Yuana’s “prophecy” is coming one month after Mohammed Adam, a captured teenage fighter, said Shekau can no longer walk effectively. Adam, who is currently in custody of the Nigerian army, said Shekau got injured during an air bombardment on an insurgents’ camp in Tumbuktu, Sambisa forest, a Boko Haram stronghold in Borno state. Shekau, known for taunting the military in videos, has not been seen on his feet lately as he has released video where he is seen sitting or in some cases, using audio to pass across his message. https://www.thecable.ng/extra-shekau-critically-ill-want-prayers-from-nigerians-says-borno-pastor

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described events that trailed the presidential election of the United States as “condemnable”. In a statement, John Akpanudoedehe, secretary of its caretaker and extra-ordinary convention planning committee, said strong institutions are fundamental to the sustenance of democracy. Akpanudoedehe said the series of events that occurred after the election “strongly underscores the fact that the integrity of the country’s leader essentially complements the workings of these institutions”. While comparing President Muhammadu Buhari with his US counterpart, he said despite losing a number of elections, Buhari showed strong statesmanship and followed due process in contesting the elections. “The events of the past 72 hours in the U.S. are, to say the least, condemnable. Over time, elections in the U.S. had been used as a touchstone for elections in other democracies,” he said. “President Muhammadu Buhari contested and lost elections a couple of times and followed the process through to the Supreme Court on all accounts. This is an outstanding credential of a true democrat.” In 2003, Buhari called for mass action when he lost to former President Olusegun Obasanjo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He also contested the outcome of the 2007 election which was won by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. But contrary to this, Buhari, ahead of the April 2011 presidential election, had called for a revolution through voting. Buhari, who had contested the election under the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) against ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, had asked Nigerians to make exceptional sacrifices to assert their collective will in the country . Following the declaration of Jonathan as winner of the April 2011 election, Buhari’s supporters went on rampage, alleging electoral malpractice. The violence began with widespread protest in the northern region and degenerated into violent riots that led to the killing of more than 800 people. https://www.thecable.ng/apc-unlike-trump-buhari-showed-true-statesmanship-when-he-lost-elections
