Senator Dino Melaye has joined Nollywood just few
hours after the Appeal Court affirmed the decision
of the Kogi Election Petition Tribunal nullifying his
victory. The outspoken senator will be featured as one of the key actors, in a Television series titled ‘Equity unbound,” an idea of the Pillars of Hope African Initiative (POHAI). Other prominent actors including Linc Edochie, Victor Decke, Chief Bruno Iwuola and Paul Sambo will also be featured in the TV series. Addressing a world press conference, the Country Director of POHAI, Chinyere Onyemekara, said the main focus of the project is on ‘equal rights and sociai justices in Africa,’ using Nigeria as a case study. “Equity unbound TV series is a soap opera that holistically ex-ray the quality of justice system in Nigeria and its attendant effect on both the masses, the elites and the government. “It is a mind-blowing expository drama presentation of the human rights challenges of an ordinary common Nigerian. A good example of the issues treated in this series is the recent report by BBC, on the pervasive threat of “sax for grades and sex for Marks” in Nigeria’s institutions of learning. “A 120mins pilot episode of Equity unbound TV series has been shot with so many celebrity Actors and with state of the art equipment cum professionais and highly motivated crew. “The idea of this is to use drama as an effective tool of communication to correct the ills and promote an acceptable social justice system in Nigeria. “Gentlemen of the press, you will agree that Africa and Nigeria in particular is far behind in terms of perfect justice system and equitable society. “We at POHAI has taken it upon ourselves to expose these shortcomings for the purpose of strategic attention and correction: “We hereby call on members of the fourth estate of the realm, civil society groups, the international community, cooperate organizations, Nigerian government at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to support in whatever way possible to bring this humanitarian project to fruition,” Onyemekara stated. Speaking on why he joined the drama, Senator Dino Melaye, expressed happiness to be part of the series that will expose unjust act in the society. Melaye said: “I’m happy to have participated in the series, especially as it will help correct social problems in the country. I am not a greenhorn in acting because I emerged as the best actor during my NYSC program. “I am ready to serve this country in any capacity and I feel that participating in the series is another way of contributing my quota in correcting the social ills in Nigeria. “If I have such opportunity again I won’t hesitate to take it,” Melaye stated. The drama’s director said that Senator Dino Melaye acted the role of Joshua in the series, which is an assemblage of professional actors and politicians. “The drama is all about tackling social vices in the society. The drama, he said captures such issues like corruption, injustice, bad governance and so on.” https://www.tori.ng/news/132393/senator-dino-melaye-joins-nollywood.html |
President Buhari has reacted to the recent high profile revelation of sexual abuse cases in institutions of higher learning in the country, which was released by the BBC on Monday October 7th. The documentary which has generated a lot of reactions since its release, showed how male lecturers in the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana sexually harrass their female students. In a series of tweets posted this afternoon, President Buhari said Nigeria needs stricter laws to protect girls and women from all forms of sexual abuse. He directed law enforcement agencies and school administrators to ensure that lecturers found guilty of sexually harrassing their female students face the consequences of their actions. “Nigeria needs stricter laws to protect girls and women from abuse. I very much welcome the National Assembly’s proposed amendments to our laws, following the recent high-profile revelations of sexual abuse in our institutions of higher learning. I acknowledge that we need to do more as a country to address incidents of sexual violence and sexual abuse in our schools; and all forms of discrimination, human trafficking and cultural practices that violate women’s rights. I urge our law enforcement agencies and school administrators to take up such cases with every seriousness, and ensure that perpetrators face the consequences of their actions. The practice of shaming and silencing victims must also be discouraged by all” the tweets read https://mobile.twitter.com/MBuhari/status/1182646772423909377?p=v

Facebook has removed hundreds of accounts, pages and groups from its social network platforms over alleged involvement in coordinated inauthentic behaviour. The tech giant said it removed a total of 443 Facebook and 125 Instagram accounts, as well as 200 pages and 76 groups originating in the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Nigeria and Indonesia. In a blog post on Thursday, Facebook said that one of the operations was sharing local news in targeted countries and promoting content about UAE as well as criticism of Qatar, Turkey and Iran, NAN reports. A smaller operation was involved in “domestic- focused coordinated inauthentic behaviour in Indonesia,” with fake accounts sharing content in support of the independence movement in West Papua province, while others posted criticism of it. A third operation, originating in Egypt, focused on Somalia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Yemen, Tunisia, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon and Qatar, the social media company said. The fake accounts “typically posted about domestic news and political topics including content in support of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. ”The fake account also made criticism of Qatar, Iran, and Turkey; and Yemen’s southern separatist movement.” Over 7 million accounts followed one or more of the pages and some 3,000 accounts joined at least one of the groups. Around 193,000 people followed one or more of the Instagram accounts.(NAN) https://dailypost.ng/2019/10/04/facebook-instagram-remove-accounts-nigeria-egypt-uae-give-reasons/

The sickbay at the Queen’s College, Lagos, has been overcrowded with students following an outbreak of a yet to be known infection. This is coming two years after TheCable did a series of reports on the contamination of the school’s water sources which led to the deaths of three students. Ify Nwoye, public relations officer of the Parent- Teacher Association (PTA), told TheCable on Monday that they got a report about a week ago of how students were being rushed to the sickbay in their hundreds. “We got there around 2pm yesterday. We alerted the principal and she went with us to the sickbay. When we got there, we saw some of the students being asked to go,” she said. “One parent we met said this happened before, and when they called him, they said it was bacteria from water, from food. For months when the girl was brought back, she still had the same ailment. And we were asking the principal, ‘what is happening to the food, what is happening to the water?’ “At that point, we asked to see the record. To my utmost dismay, the principal said no, we won’t see the record. We wanted to know how many students have been sent home. The nurse at the sickbay was threatened not to release any record to the PTA. So, to avoid drama we had to leave.” NO PRE-RESUMPTION PLAN Nwoye also said things were not in place before the girls’ resumption. She added that it was the standard to ensure the school environment is clean and sewage treated before school opens but none of these was done. “We all knew there was no pre-resumption plan. The sewage was not packed, the grasses were not cut. No fumigation. And the consequences are what we are seeing now,” she said. She said students are now being asked not to report to the clinic, and those who do so are being threatened with dismissal. The school management could not be reached immediately, but a source who works in the school and did not want to be named told TheCable that “the best thing is to close down the school. This is more than what we can control now.” https://www.thecable.ng/many-students-ill-as-yet-another-infection-hits-queens-college |
A Special Anti-Robbery Squad officer caught on camera shabbily dressed is now facing internal disciplinary procedure after his photo left tongues wagging. Recall that we reported the news on Friday with Nigerians condemning the police officer who has now been identified as Inspector Michael Olubode. Nigerians tagged the man a disgrace to the police force as his dressing doesn't depict any responsibility expected of men fighting crime. The Nigerian police authorities have decided to take action as he went against the code of conduct. Read Police tweet below: https://www.facebook.com/127243240651077/posts/3138429862865718/?app=fbl

Onigbinde, director and co-founder of BudgIT, has been appointed by the federal government as a technical adviser at ministry of budget and national planning. The data analyst, who often criticised the current administration, disclosed this through his Medium account as his Twitter account is deactivated. “Friends, I have accepted to take up an advisory role underwritten by an international development agency for an initial period of six months . I believe that to guard the reputation of BudgIT, I need to take an operational break and make my new position public,” he wrote. “In a technical advisory role, I shall be supporting the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Agba, along the issues of budget reform, development planning, and revenue growth. “It is similar to a task Joseph Agunbiade (my BudgIT co-founder) and I worked on in 2013– 14, under the DFID-FEPAR program for the National Assembly Budget and Research Office.” Onigbinde’s appointment has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians on Twitter. Joe Abah, director of DAI Nigeria, an international development firm implementing programmes on governance in more than 100 countries worldwide, commended the appointment. “I am pleased that Seun Onigbinde has been given an appointment by the Federal Govt. When I tell young people not to be too extreme, they abuse me as “Fencist.” In 2015, you are all in for Buhari. 2019, you are all in against Buhari. Your country is bigger than Buhari. Think am o,” he tweeted. But some Twitter users reacted negatively to the appointment, saying such was not expected of the BudgIT co-founder. “Seun Onigbinde deleted his Twitter account after getting appointment for Buhari’s government. The same Buhari that we all detest his government. I am learning a new lesson from this. “CRITICISE THE GOVT UNTIL THEY APPOINT YOU AND KEEP QUIET,” a user tweeted.
