In the wake of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, the Human Rights Writers Association has called on Nigeria and other African countries, to shun the nation's businesses. HURIWA said, “We are amazed, shocked, disappointed that the president of Nigeria and the government of Nigeria has watched helplessly as our citizens are being butchered in their hundreds in South Africa by black South Africans and government has so far refused to adopt and implement a stringent diplomatic blockade and measures against the South Africa business concerns in Nigeria, It is unfortunate.” HURIWA added that Nigerians must immediately take actions while calling on Nigerians to take their future in their hands. “We are calling on Nigerians to make up their minds and prepare within the next 78 hours to boycott DSTV, Nigerians should even boycott the Big Brother Naija. “We are of the opinion that even the participants in BBNaija should walk out of the BBNaija immediately. Those who have MTN lines should cut it off and go for other lines. “We must take these measures and we must start doing that without any further waste of time because the government has not done anything to stop the South Africans from Killing Nigerians and these killings are still going on and everybody is just cool about it,” the group stated. It added, “We should cut off any diplomatic relationship with south Africa. South Africa's xenophobic violence has demonstrated that even the South African government is guilty by association. “There is no justification for the xenophobic attacks against other African nationals who live in South Africa.” http://community.vanguardngr.com/m/discussion?id=4565467%3ATopic%3A2867508 |

President Muhammadu Buhari says it is shocking how hate and bigotry inhabits the human soul resulting in brothers killing brothers. Buhari was speaking on the Tiv/Jukun crisis, and he asked the governments and people of Benue and Taraba to exercise restraint following the killing of David Tanko, a Catholic priest, in Kpankufu Village,Wukari, Taraba. The president made the call in a statement by Garba Shehu, his senior special assistant media and publicity, on Friday. Suspected bandits had ambushed and killed the priest on his way to attend a peace meeting with his fellow clergymen. The president directed the governors of the two states, stakeholders including traditional rulers of Tor TIV, Aku Uka of Wukari, religious and community leaders to mee urgently to bring an end to the persistent clashes between the warring parties. The president said the murder of the Catholic priest highlights the urgency of addressing “this embarrassing and persistent conflict”. He described the destruction, violent attacks on people and property in the communities by the warring parties as “unacceptable’’. He said the federal government would not “sit idly and watch the deep-seated antagonistic relationship between the Tiv and Jukun people fester”. “I have watched with trepidation and disbelief how hate and bigotry had inhabited the human soul, resulting in brothers killing brothers,” the statement said. “On behalf of the Federal government and the entire people of the country, I offer my condolences to the Catholic community, the government and people of Taraba over the losses arising from recent incidents involving the warring communities. “The persistent deaths and destruction and the seeming desire by the warring sides to push each other to extinction is embarrassing, and this is against the essence of our ethnic and religious diversity in the country. “Progress is impossible where violence and destruction are allowed to dominate our daily lives.” According to the president, the Tiv/Jukun violence is one of Nigeria’s most persistent and intractable security problems. Buhari assured the affected communities that the federal government would not leave them to their fate or treat cases of communal violence with levity and indifference. “The deployment of security men can only provide a temporary solution, “he said. “The long term and lasting solution to this deep-seated antagonistic relationship between the warring factions depend on the willingness of those involved to listen to reason and give peace a chance. “It is time for leaders of the ethnic groups to come together and draw up a roadmap for lasting peace. “The impact of this persistent violence on the social and economic life of the people is incalculable. ” The president also said intervention from the federal level made up religious, community leaders and top security operatives was being put together by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation. He said the intervention team would examine all issues underlying the conflicts in the hope of finding a permanent solution. https://www.thecable.ng/tiv-jukun-crisis-buhari-directs-traditional-religious-leaders-to-prevent-escalation |

The National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benue state has sacked a member of the House of Representatives, David Ogewu, as the legitimate winner of the 2019 election for Oju/Obi constituency. The tribunal also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Ogewu, a member of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). According to the tribunal, the certificate of return should be handed over to Samson Okwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In his ruling on Wednesday, August 28, Justice A.A Adeleye declared that the petitioner won the election with a margin of 994 votes cast in the two local government areas of the constituency. The judge also faulted INEC's decision of declaring Ogewu as winner of the election without including results from Obi local government area. Stating that the tribunal had the authority to compute the results, Adeleye said that based on only the result for Oju, the 12, 794 votes allotted to Ogewu against Okwu’s 6, 797 votes were invalid. Including results from Obi where Okwu of PDP scored 7, 543 votes against Mr Ogewu’s 754 vote, the tribunal justice also deducted 252 votes scored by the APGA candidate in Oju local government area. According to the judge, the results were allotted to him in error. https://www.legit.ng/1256806-election-tribunal-court-sacks-benue-federal-lawmaker.html |

It was previously reported that the future of banks was under threat from FinTech startups and telecoms companies. Nigerian banks are beginning to review their business model which is still very much the traditional banking system as technology is penetrating deeper into the tasks that workers carry out. Technology has already compelled some banks to limit their expansion rate, while others are shutting down their brick and mortar structures to accommodate technology. All these are happening because technology is projected to handle 30% of the work currently done at banks. Part of the 30% of work that will be taken over by technology is collation of tellers. This means that the staffs who work as tellers will be major casualties of the onslaught of technology. Banks are reviewing their work system because in the next two to three years, teller jobs would likely be phased out by the financial institutions. Speaking on the projected job loss, the President, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Uche Olowu, said the downsizing might occur because the banks’ traditional business model is being threatened. According to him, banks are now investing in financial technology rather than invest in expansion or brick and mortar building which will accommodate more jobs. Apart from their investments in Fintech, banks are also investing in specialised human capital. This paradigm shift in investment focus of banks is expected to affect departments that can be technologically driven. While defending the actions taken by banks, the Managing Director/CEO, Ecobank Nigeria, Patrick Akinwuntan, said the infusion of technology into banking services was done in a bid to remain relevant as banks gradually lose monopoly over financial transactions. Nairametrics had previously reported that the future of banks was under threat from FinTech startups and telecoms companies which received approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to conduct mobile money service. They were given approval to enable the apex bank achieve its 80% financial inclusion by 2020. However, the growing popularity of FinTech startups and functionality of network providers as Payment Service Banks has placed some jobs in banks in jeopardy, as customers continue to get more reasons not to visit banks for some financial transactions which can now be done anywhere. https://nairametrics.com/2019/08/28/massive-job-loss-looms-in-the-banking-sector/ |

The Kaduna state executive council has approved payment of the new national minimum wage and consequential adjustments to civil servants with effect from September 1, 2019. According to Muyiwa Adekeye, media aide of Nasir el-Rufai, governor of the state, the decision was taken at an executive council meeting chaired by Hadiza Balarabe, deputy governor. Balarabe was quoted as saying the development shows the commitment of el-Rufai to strengthen the public service. She said the council deliberated on the minimum wage memo and unanimously approved commencement of the implementation in September 2019. “The Executive Council stated its that commitment to the public service includes a desire to improve the standard of living of workers in the state. Pursuant to that, the Kaduna State Government launched a pay review process early in 2018. A cabinet committee was charged with exploring how the Kaduna State Government can sustainably improve public sector salaries,” Adekeye said in a statement. “Guided by the twin principles of ability to pay and sustainability, the government considered several scenarios, bearing in mind the trend of internally generated revenues and allocations from the federation account. Several salary scenarios were considered, and one option was identified as most prudent. A final decision was suspended as negotiations for a new national minimum wage appeared to gather momentum. It was reactivated after the Federal Government announced the new national minimum wage in April 2019. “Paying the new national minimum wage and consequential adjustments will increase the wage bill of the Kaduna State Government by 33%. Gross monthly salary outlay will rise to N3.759bn from the current N2.827bn. “This almost N1bn monthly increase in the wage bill means that salary and pension commitments will take the lion’s share of state government expenditure. Meeting these salary obligations while achieving development objectives for citizens will further raise the pressure to expand and deepen revenue sources and collections. “According to the new wage structure, the lowest paid workers in the civil service enjoyed increments of as much as 67%. Middle-ranking officers from Grade 10 to 14 were awarded increments of 60%.” The federal government had approved N30,000 minimum wage after a series of discussions with stakeholders, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). https://www.thecable.ng/just-in-well-start-paying-n30k-minimum-wage-from-sept-says-kaduna-govt |
