Business › Re: A Narrow Escape (ATM Story): Please Read And Be Informed! by executinal(m): 9:52pm On Jul 11, 2011
I was going to write about something funny this week, but an event which occured yesterday forced my hand into changing the script. Everything you are going to read here is true, and I hope you guys will learn from my experience and not fall victim to fraudsters like a number of people already have, and others unfortunately will continue to be.

Thursday, July 6 2011 was one of those days when 3rd Mainland bridge was inexplicably clogged with cars. I was carless, so my friend picked me up from the office and we proceeded to the mainland. Roughly two hours later, we got to Anthony Village where I reside and I decided to use the ATM machine in the GT Bank branch which is situated near one of the two major bus-stops that service the area. Now, it was around 9.30pm and I didn't think it was fair to make my friend wait so I told her I was going to take a bike home so she left.

On getting to the atm gallery, I noticed that the first of the two machines was 'temporarily out of service' so I used the second one. I noticed that the card slot of the machine I was using had a funny looking receptacle but I shrugged my concerns aside and executed my transaction.

Just as I turned to leave, my 'spidey-sense' started tingling like crazy. I looked at the funny contraption that sat over the card slot with a more critical eye. It blended with the general colour scheme of the machine,  I prodded and pulled it, and to my astonishment the thing fell off! I scrutinized it carefully, with no small measure of suspicion,  The thing had some funny-looking chips embedded in it, and a port that appeared to connect it to a computer or some other device. Apparently, some motherfuckers placed the device there to extract the information on the debit cards of unsuspecting ATM users, which they use to clone their cards and raid their accounts. The fraudsters had blocked the card slot of the other machine with toothpicks to disable it and compel customers to use the machine where they had installed their device. My dad once got hit for 60 grand by some NaughtyPerson scammers who probably used the same methods. His loss was aggravated by the bank's uncooperative stance on the matter. They insisted that he had disclosed his details to a third-party and that they were not liable for any losses he had incurred.

When I was about to turn and leave, two women came into the bank to use the machine. I drew their attention to my discovery and we began searching for a bank security man to report the matter to. For some strange reason, we couldn’t find a single soul on the bank premises. As we stood there contemplating our next move, two shady looking males entered the bank premises. As soon as I saw them, I knew they were the fraudsters. They looked shifty, and eyed us suspiciously when they saw us standing near the machines. One of them asked me if the ATMs were working and I answered in the affirmative. As I answered, the ladies and I walked away and stood in front of the bank building. The fraudsters checked the machine for their ‘oil-well’ and when they couldn’t find it, they walked up to me and asked again, ‘bros, did you say the machine is working well? Shey there is no problem?’ By this time I was pretty irritated and I answered them sharply, ‘yes the machine is working, didn’t you hear me the first time?’

They appeared confused and unsure of the next move to make. They might have suspected that I was with their device but they really didn’t have any proof, especially given the fact that I concealed the device very carefully. They walked back to the ATM bank, and I took the opportunity to leave the banking premises and cross over to the other side of the road where there were a number of people and some illumination. After some two minutes, the two retards gave up their futile search and exited the bank. They walked past me and went into Anthony proper, possibly to go and give a report to their ‘Godfather’. I hope he gutted the two of them like fishes for losing a source of his ‘lau-lau’ money.

I was conscious of the fact that I was in great danger standing beside the road while I waited for a bike to take me home. The fraudsters could have gotten desperate and attacked me with the hope of finding the device on me. The idea of walking home was a non-starter as there were a number of dark places they could ambush me in and do me great harm. After some deep thought, I stopped a bike and asked him to take me home. I made sure I paid him in advance and I kept my eye over my shoulder for the entire duration of the journey. As soon as we got to the entrance gate of the estate where I reside in, I hopped off and darted inside. I trotted home and securely locked the gate behind me…

What the hell do I do with this device? Report the matter to the police who will find a way to implicate me and force me to give them bribes to secure my release; turn it over to the bank where I discovered it so some greedy-arse banker who is up to his teeth in loans converts the device to his use; or do I just destroy it?

@topic, The films are hilarious, 'Emi Nire Kan' is an example.

I saw some film posters recently, 'Tea and Coffee', 'Omo olomo larin ero', 'Hot Potato'. Mehn.

Yoruba films are good, sha, REALLY, REALLY GOOD. Too many moral lessons to gain. I watched 'Mawole' recently and I realised that the days of Nigerian films reducing IQ are long gone.

If I had dough to spare, I would gladly donate to the industry cos they are trying, both Yoruba and English.

It's a pity the marketers control everything including quality.

ALL south, west and the east should please leave core Norths alone!!! They don't need us in their territory simple. If you guys insist then BOKO HARAM will show you guys the better way to leave. GEJ your government is nothing but complete disappointment to our Nation, some said GEJ shouldn't be blamed ok you can put the blame on me (AKON) If i am correct, i think BOKO HARAM started their operation during Late Yaradua regime, but immediately they track their leader and kill him very easy. Now my question is if late Yaradua can do it, can't GEJ also do it? During OBJ regime no such news, though MEND are for different mission. Really GEJ has nothing to offer to Nigeria simple, i never dream for the Man to become the president of Nigeria, because i have never seen any impact from him since he became acting president to president. BOKO HARAM please allow your fellow citizen to leave, for we all are one irrespective of religion, tribe, education etc. Our struggling for this earth ends up in a six feet, which no man know were he / she is going. Please lets reason and move forward than backward. A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE.
Sports › Chelsea Promote Emenalo by executinal(op): 7:54pm On Jul 10, 2011
CHELSEA PROMOTE EMENALO

Chelsea have named Michael Emenalo, their former assistant first-team coach, as the club's new sporting director.

The 45-year-old, who took over Ray Wilkins' coaching job when the former England midfielder left the club in November, will oversee a scouting network and youth development programmes, as well as supporting new manager Andre Villas-Boas.

A statement on Chelsea's website read: "Michael takes on a vital role that will assist the overall long-term football strategy of the club."

Emenalo was a surprise choice to succeed Wilkins in November because of his lack of experience at the highest level.

A former Nigeria international, he was brought to the club in a scouting position in 2007 when Avram Grant was in charge.

Villas-Boas could find no place for him in his coaching set-up, though, and he has now been given the sporting director job.

He told www.chelseafc.com: "Without delving too deeply into it, the first thing is that I'm going to be supporting the manager and working with him in making sure that things run smoothly.

"I have the responsibility to direct and manage our scouting structure internationally and domestically, and to keep an eye on and assist the progress of the academy. That's the simple summation.

"Over the next weeks and months I will be getting the scouts in place, finding the people that will lead the scouts along with me, and integrating the agendas and ideas of the different areas from the first team to the academy. After that it will hopefully be a question of reviewing our efforts and making sure it is bearing the fruits that we expect.

"The final decisions about who comes in and who doesn't will be the manager's to make but to arrive at that stage there will be a lot of working together and I would imagine I will be part of that process of working together to make that happen."

Chelsea have also promoted Dermot Drummy from youth-team to reserve manager, with Adrian Viveash taking his place in his previous position.

cap28:
The return of the economic hit woman

blog | July 6, 2011 - 2:01am | By CIC Old Boy

In “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” John Perkins states: “Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign “aid” organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet’s natural resources. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization.”

If media reports from Nigeria are to be believed, the return of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from her position as Managing Director at the World Bank to head the finance ministry is all but a done deal.

My less than scientific look at the opinions of the commentariat indicates they welcome her return to the position she held under the Olusegun Obasanjo Administration. This viewpoint is evidence in support of what Yusufu Bala Usman, the late professor of history at Ahmadu Bello University said:

“Ignorance is not the same as illiteracy. Knowledge is not the same as literacy, or, even the same as the acquisition of educational certificates, or, academic ranks. Some of the most highly literate Nigerians, and the most highly educated, by virtue of their certificates and ranks, are some of the most ignorant over many crucial areas of natural and human existence and over our national life, like our geography, history, economy and politics.”

This ignorance among many literate Nigerians explains why the thought of Okonjo-Iweala heading Nigeria’s finance ministry doesn’t fill that many people with dread. They are clearly unaware of the agenda of Okonjo-Iweala’s paymasters at the World Bank. Carlos Andres Perez, a former president of Venezuela, described World Bank economists as “genocide workers in the pay of economic totalitarianism”.

John Pilger wrote in the book “Hidden Agendas”: “The privileges of ‘discovery’ granted to Christopher Columbus in 1942, in a world the Pope ‘considered his property to be disposed according to his will’, have been replaced by other acts of piracy transformed into divine will.

The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and other ‘international’ institutions are invested with the privileges of conquest on behalf of the papacy of Washington. The objective is what Clinton calls the ‘integration of countries into the global free market community’, the terms of which, says the New York Times, ‘require the United States to be involved in the plumbing and wiring of nations’ internal affairs more deeply than ever before’. In other words a de facto world government.”

Pilger quotes Frederic F Clairmont in the “The Rise and Fall of Economic Liberalism”: “What the US imperial master demanded, and still does was not allies but unctuous client states”. He described how this agenda was implemented through World Bank and IMF loans provided in return for ‘structural adjustment’ of the client states’ economies.

“This meant that the economic direction of each country would be planned, monitored and controlled in Washington. Industry would be deregulated and sold off; public services such as health care and education, would be diminished. Subsistence agriculture, which has kept human beings alive for thousands of years, would be converted to the production of foreign exchange-earning cash crops. ‘Tax holidays’ and other ‘incentives’, such as sweated labour, would be offered to foreign ‘investors’. It was the surrender of sovereignty, and without a gunboat in sight.”

During her first stint as finance minister, Okonjo-Iweala and her “fans” in the Nigerian media claimed she negotiated for our foreign debts to have been written off. The agreement with the “Paris Club” countries, including the US, the UK, Germany, France, etc involved Nigeria paying $12.4bn in upfront payments in order for the debt arrears of $30bn to be cancelled. Rob Weissman of Multinational Monitor disapproved of the deal: “You can celebrate this deal, as the Paris Club does, if you ignore the fact that creditors generally write down bad debts as a matter of course (not charity), the billions over principal that Nigeria has already sent out of the country, the fact that the deal imposes IMF conditionality on Nigeria (even though the IMF isn’t providing credit to the country), and the reality of the severe poverty in Nigeria.”

Patrick Bond in his book “Looting Africa” said Nigeria was “scammed” on the debt deal. “The next step in the scam was for President Obasanjo to agree to a reimposition of neoliberal policies by the IMF, under the rubric of the new Policy Support Instrument (PSI).” He further claimed that: “Indeed, the core message of the PSI document released by the IMF is its desire to retain effective control of African countries’ macroeconomic policies on behalf of ‘donor’ countries (its shareholders)”. Okonjo-Iweala and Obasanjo willingly signed over Nigeria’s sovereignty to “donor countries” along with a sweetener cheque for $12bn and claimed it was all for our own good!

Ever since the mid 80s, most African countries have been following the genocidal economic policies of “structural adjustment” that the likes of Okonjo-Iweala and her bosses at the World Bank prescribe. It is usually a four-step programme:

1. Privatisation. Prof Joseph Stiglitz a former chief economist at the World Bank called it “briberisation”. I tend to call it “piratisation”. In Russia state assets were stripped for a pittance by US-backed oligarchs who made out like bandits, national output fell by half and mass starvation returned to the country after a 40-year absence. This experience has been repeated across the world.

2. “Capital market liberalisation” – the theory says this will allow investment from foreign banks and multinationals. They insist laws restricting the movement of capital out of the country or taxes foreign capital are relaxed. Most countries that took the bait saw their reserves vanish in no time. Africa is estimated to lose about $150bn a year in tax avoidance by the multinationals operating in the continent.

3. “Market-based pricing” – this is the raising of prices of domestic fuel, water, electricity, etc which in turn puts food beyond the reach of most. This is the catalyst for driving more folks below the poverty line.

4. The stage is now set for “Poverty Reduction Strategies”. The claim is that “free trade” will eliminate poverty. “Open markets” is the mantra. In reality, Europe and America kick down trade barriers in the Third World, while they build up barriers in their own markets to Third World produce.

This World Bank-inspired agenda was packaged by the Obasanjo regime as “reforms”. In reality they deformed the country. Wherever they were implemented in the developing world the results were predictable, with mass poverty spreading. A few weeks ago I saw Okonjo-Iweala parroting the same orthodoxy at a conference on African development. Benjamin Franklin said: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

More of Okonjo-Iweala’s neo-liberal economic orthodoxy cooked up in Washington will further entrench poverty in Nigeria. But there is little hope that Nigerians will learn the bitter truth about the World Bank’s bitter medicine. Sadly, many of us are shackled by what Walter Rodney described as “colonial education”, which is an “education for underdevelopment” in which the “received wisdom” from Europe and America is upheld as gospel in stubborn defiance to reality. This means that the Hit Woman sent by those who contributed towards guaranteeing our underdevelopment, on a mission to destroy any chances we may have of developing, is held up by many as a solution.

It’s no wonder that Steve Biko said: “The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”
