I dunno what the answer to these questions are. It is sort of hard to say.
It's hard to say, but you know there's massive emigration some how, enough to take away enough jobs somehow?
Eh, I think you are misunderstanding what I'm saying. One zone sees massive emigration out of it. All I'm saying is that that zone should have lower unemployment rates.
So in 2006 there were around 24 million people living in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo according to the Federal Government, if you want to say that there's massive emigration, then how many are you saying are in the south west? You've got yourself in a hole here. Either south eastern migration has nothing to do with poverty rates, or the whole of the south west is at least 10% native south eastern. Besides that, the population gap between the south east and south west isn't much, even when putting the Lagos population as high as 20 million. On top of that, considering the population densities shown on that map (which shows that the south east was underestimated in the census which says that Abia and Ekiti have the same number of people), your point still doesn't explain the difference in poverty rates.
Finally, can you post a table of poverty rates via state?
By regions: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-371485.0.html 2004: http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:wgJfRD3S_0QJ:www.oerafrica.org/ResourceDownload.aspx?assetid%3D969%26userid%3D-1+poverty+rate+nigeria+south+east+south+west+north+west&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgMqrnvyzigPMw7ADJUAAX9UBCi9Mis6NmqhlNFCX96QXgaQ9GxeFjj4EtXhx3yDI0puOMh7Py8Duz1yy6inJvQuMchj1Yq4uyfnVXtPtrKlRx2yhXSMD4XxUcclS7WUg89Rf3Z&sig=AHIEtbRRm-XXz0Vf9-3sPoBMW2yrZfFsnQ&pli=1 |
1. Can you find and post a list of poverty rates by state? So we can see and compare? 2. Also, to me, unemployment (and underemployment) is intimately tied to poverty. . . no work, then no pay, and thus poor. If this is true, then hopefully you can see how mass emigration out of the SE helps keep poverty rates lower there. Well, I think I can make a pretty good case for Lagos State's pop being undercounted. # of banks, this US ambassador's report claiming that Lagos is the most populous state, GDP data (if Lagos and Kano had roughly the same population as the 2006 official census suggests, then why is Lagos's GDP 20%+ of Nigeria's GDP, while Kano's is like 3 or 4%?), and even this parallel census that Lagos did at the time. Not to mention UN population projections. . . Like, it is pretty, pretty obvious at this point that Lagos is (A) by far the most populated state in Nigeria (B) Probably north of 15-18 million people. I'm not saying that one cannot make a similarly good argument for the SE zone being undercounted. But. . . you've not done that. Instead you ask me to take you at your word, without providing any evidence. Truth be told, given that the SE zone sees the largest amount of emigration of any zone in Nigeria, it doesn't make any sense to assume that what you hold says true (at least, w/o some sort of evidence.)
In short forget the map above. Okay, so South western Nigeria has around 35 million people according to you and the south east stays at 24 million, I agree. Now, what is the percentage of south eastern Nigerians in the south west? Specifically, what is the population of south eastern Nigerians in south western states outside Lagos. And if less people in an area makes the areas poverty rate drop, why don't areas in Nigeria with lesser populations have a low poverty rate as well? |
^-- Thought experiment for you. Suppose all non-indigenes in the SW were rounded up and deported to their homelands. Does this: a) Increase b) Decrease c) Have no effect on the unemployment rates in the SW? (Keep in mind that if many are forced to leave like that, those who remain will fill in the economic niches remaining. In other words, the answer is B).
The truth is that the poverty rate in the south east is lower than the south west not because of unemployment, otherwise many people in Nigeria would starve to death, but because more people are taking advantage of skills there, maybe because of the culture.
And regarding population of the SE zone being massively under-counted during the census; like I said, I don't know if this is true. And am not sure it makes any sense to simply assume it to be true just because you think so.
Where is it official that the Lagos State population was under counted? Or was it also a case of people thinking so? |
If you say so; I dunno if this is true or not.
That's what the internet is here for.
If you say so; I dunno if this is true or not. Right. But certainly more than any other ethnic group in Nigeria, more have left their homeland. So the principle here is pretty easy. Immigration from location A to location B increases the # of people relative to the number of jobs in location B, increasing unemployment in location B. For the same reason, it reduces unemployment in location A.
So what is the percentage of native south easterners in the south west? The only way you could come to these conclusions is if you worked that out, and if the answer was over 20% of the south west population. That's the only way there's enough south easterners in the south west to increase unemployment and increase poverty. At the same time, the amount of people in the rural areas (working on the farm) would be less than those in urban areas because the poverty is coming from unemployment in western jobs, unless the unemployment includes menial farm work as well. Also, did you work out the percentage of south easterners that are in the informal sector and did you check how many of these informal jobs have been taken away from native south westerners and how many of them are imported usually by south easterners (e.g spare parts)? |
Justcash:Nonsense. The Nigerian military have never, and repeat, have never saved Nigerians in Nigeria from anything that does not concern the politics of the ruling leaders. Thousands have died for decades, and they're only on top of the situation now. |
These are the states were terrorist groups are active. These are the states the United States should implement and immediate crackdown on. https://mapsof.net/uploads/static-maps/ng_sharia.png |
Please, the United States should come, some of these extremists are aided by the military, some Christians were murdered for nothing and the government didn't even release a proper statement. The Nigerian government is useless. Nigeria is the perfect training ground for extremists, it is another Libya or Yemen in the making. The Nigerian government is worthless. The united states should invade the whole of Northern Nigeria or they will regret it later. Someone tell Obama. |
Where is the USA, the Al'Qaeda are active in Northern Nigeria. This isn't even a protest avenging an Islamic leader any more, it's the biggest Islamic terrorist in history. Where is America, go and occupy that side. |
I don't know off the top of my head. You tell me. But we both know the SW zone is far more populated than the SE zone, even if the official statistics suggest the gap isn't huge. For example, 2006 #s had Lagos State population at roughly 9 miillion. When most believe it to be be 15-18+ million. So you tell me which zone in Nigeria is the most populated, and which gets the most immigration.
They were merciful to Lagos in the "census". Eastern towns were underestimated as strongly and the South Eastern states still came to around 24 million while the south western states including Lagos were around 29 million. The point is that the majority of south east natives are not out of their homelands and the population (even underestimated) isn't low enough to be blamed for the low (or lower) poverty rates.
It depends on the cost. If it turns out that you can only bring 20 containers on a river boat to Onitsha, and say 200 on a sea ship to Lagos, and a shipper only pays 2X as much to bring in 10X as much goods into Lagos, then the economics might not work out in favor of the Onitsha port. Anyway, we shall see. My intuition tells me that something like is what is going on.
Why would it cost so much just to come up the Niger, something which has been done by steamers since the 19th century oil palm trade. River Niger is a mile wide, some sections of it leading to Onicha are around half that which means there's no problem getting the largest ship in existence to Onicha and further. Port Harcourt, for example, isn't even on the coast, yet large oil ships make their travels up the Bonny river which is half of the smallest section of the Niger. |
This is probably just a function of immigration. Easy to have low poverty rates if all your people leave.
How many people did the Federal Government count in the south west states and the south east states in 2006?
I don't see any movement towards developing a seaport, though. All i hear is about riverports being developed in the SS and SE. So I'm not concerned. . . they won't be able to compete, most likely.
So if importers tell the ships to come to Onicha they'll go to Lagos instead like a steamer going to New York because it doesn't want to travel to St. Louis? |
I think its a case of superiority complex. I've really thought about why they could pronounce "sophisticated" Chinese, Japanese, German and French words and I guess its cos they really never conquered those people to the extent of stripping them of some of their cultural aspects unlike a place like India in which they conquered and renamed some of the "difficultly pronounced words" to words they could pronounce without any extra vocal effort. E.g, they renamed "Mumbai" to "Bombay". It was only changed by Indian authorities as recently as 1995 to its original name; "Mumbai".
They can't pronounce it, the difference is that Chinese people won't carry on spelling Onicha 'Onitsha' 100 years after the white man has twisted the name. The names 'China' and 'Japan' are even corruptions of the native names or names from nearby kingdoms, the Japanese call their country 'Nihon' or 'Nippon' and their people are 'Nihongo'. The names are corrupted only because the native people see Western culture as superior to the point that some people will laugh at you if you spell 'Onitsha' as 'Onicha'. |
Why don't some people just stay in the romance section? |
