Urhobo, which I can assertively speak on, loaned Igho from the Portuguese word Igou/Igos which means money. However this money implied here is in the form of coins or paper legal tender. The forms of money we used before contact with Portuguese were cowries and trade-by-barter and there are Urhobo terms for both that are not loaned.
Igos is not Portuguese for money.

Edos do not call AGBORs igbo people, we aren't that uninformed. Rather we wonder why others keep insisting they are igbo groups

www.nairaland.com/2196905/politics-ika-ndigbo-unearthing-facts
The stuff you're posting is from the recent politics around Ika origin mostly online. In reality, 'Agbor people' are ovigbo and if you ask an Agbor person yesterday, today or tomorrow they will say the same, to deny this is to lie or to be uninformed. That is why there were Biafra soldiers from Agbor and why the Edo people complained about being invaded by Biafra while the people of Anioma didn't.

Agbor people are taught Standard Igbo in school by the way, not standard Edo.

We have a word for cowrie where I'm from. It's ayo or ayolo. Ego is just generic for money. Thus we say ego ayolo (literally cowrie money) when referring to cowries in their role as money, but in every other context we simply call it ayolo.
I guess it's a dialect thing or maybe ego has just been replaced, but terms like 'akpa ego' and so on were measurements in cowries. It could be ayoro (which I'm guessing comes from the sound of shells in a bag) is a way of differentiating cowry money from other types.

We don't call them OVWIGBO, except the ones who insist they are igbos! We have specific names for ethnic groups though this knowledge is gradually being lost
And who are the ones that insist they are Igbo? This is just nonsense, Ika, Ukwuani and other Igbo groups in Delta State and so on are called Ovigbo, whether they 'insist' or not.

I am not suggesting anything!

Ikas and Ukwuanis, as well as Ikwerres, claim to be originally Edos! Today they speak Igbo. A mass acculturation took place. It is obvious like the Teke Teke Mene Upharsin! If you negate this fact, it means these aforementioned tribes are liars! I do not want to believe that more than 30million people will lie about this.

Acculturation may be voluntary, by mistake or imposed. In whatever case, it happened! Let's move beyond that.

Urhobos were never acculturated. However, the Igbo language was seen as a Language of advantage and commerce and thus Igbo people were warmly embraced, ergo, linguistic items were shared. The donor and recipient remains a subject of debate.
I don't know about Ukuwani or Ikwere, but Ika has never claimed to be "originally Edo", or whatever that means. Whenever an Ika person wants to disassociate from the larger Igbo group who they share most culture with, they'll either say that Ika is a unique ethnic group with Igbo and Edo influence, or they'll point to their families outside Ishan or whatever origin. There has never been a time Ika people have claimed to be Edo, in fact the truth is the opposite. Bini people call them 'ovigbo' meaning Igbo people and Igbanke and other Igbo or 'Ika' groups in Edo State have been trying to reunite with Agbor. The Ika people only share some family history and political/structural ties with Edo people.

The Obi of Owa acknowledges that Owa is of Nri-Igbo origin by the way.

Ego/Igho both come from Portuguese. That word and all its variants are not ours to claim.
Ego is not Portuguese, It's Igbo. It originally means cowry.

Goodboiy is right on that one, we ukwuanis don't see ourselves as igbos, we trace our ancestry to bini and we have a strong oral history that documents our migration from bini
Yet Bini yesterday, today and tomorrow continue to call you 'ovigbo'. LOL.

CultureRe: Why Do Igbo People Claim Yoruba Words To Be Theirs? by ezeagu(m): 6:00am On Nov 09, 2015
I think the general problem with this thread, and in extension the line of reasoning is that people are judging Igbo people by the guys they see in Lagos. Pidgin is hardly used in Igboland, where more then 80% of Igbo people live, and when it is used it's peppered with mostly Igbo words.

I hope you got my point...
I was not even commending or longing for the darling colony...at all
The whole colonial business makes me gag

Just that in some cases, the colonialisation was done half-heartedly...making it look even more like the looting it was
With less need to please the people....just slapping very different people together, manipulating them, taking stuff, and then more stuff from the place.....and then currently, neo-colonialism in its many forms
The insult is too much

To prove to you that I do not admire darling colonies/protectorates, of whatever country ...Namibia and South Africa with their heavy oyibo presence/ legacies are the African countries I am least likely to visit, or live in,...ever...
I got what you meant, I was just trying to expand on the reasons for not investing. Like you said, they invested in India because they sought to live there, while the climate in Nigeria wasn't for them. I'm also saying that the nature of west Africans maybe or their culture (in terms of resistance) made it more undesirable to them.

I know!
I have been doing a loooot of studying cheesy

India was the darling, mysterious colony that the British wanted as their "pet"...so they treated it as such, created an exotic holiday spot for when they got bored of life in GB....hence the structures, all the cricket lawns, even the supervised split of the original colony into the Muslim and Hindi countries...etc....in effect, India was/is their beloved colony, in whom they were/are well pleased

Not so the "dark place" with the people as was described by Mr Lugard and others, SMH
The series of merges and manipulations which culminated into the colony named by Flora Shaw as Nigeria angry was met with a lot of scepticism, and reluctance by the British...much like in a, "oh but we already have a working colony where we even go to play cos we have set it up real nice....what do we need in another colony which, heavens forbid/bless the poor area undecided is very hot and dark"? In short, they did not need Nigeria

But something came up and well..... it turned out that there was something that could spark up interest in an otherwise hopeless "petting" adventure.....black wealth...petroleum, ....and then timber, and cocoa, and coal, and columbite, and many many other things....and recently, human resources/manpower

The foundation, guiding principles(if any) and ethos of this country is a travesty, I must say
It has got to be split for it to gain any consciousness, pride and truth...
Only then can love and patroitism ever live in this place..legally
It already exists bigtime but the people recognise that not, cos they have been made to feel Biafra is the enemy
....but then, I digress

Summary, India was the darling....Nigeria was the ?maga
Chai
The truth is it shouldn't be an issue what the British built and didn't, but they were using money made by Nigeria so it was stealing. Maybe it's true, they weren't planning on setting up a permanent colony or home like in other more 'temperate' environments (to them) so they just didn't do anything, and maybe 'Nigerians' were not going to have that anyway.
CultureRe: Should we be proud of having the English language? by ezeagu(op): 9:48pm On Nov 06, 2015
Taharqa999:
English is the language enforced on Nigeria's people through slavery of the white man, there is no pride in losing your native tongue because the slave masters enforced it on you regardless of economic or international reasons, english can always be a second language. Nigerians have many interesting languages, look at Somalia and Ethiopia, no slave master managed to enforce his language on us
Well Arabic is an official language of Somalia, plus the Islam, and some Ethiopians might argue that Amharic is an imperialist language. Besides that point, people in Africa should have gotten past that point about seeing English as a 'forced' language and starting to use its advantages. Many countries around the world like China and Japan are trying to get their citizens to learn English, some countries like Singapore and Hong Kong are former British colonies but use English to their advantage now, regardless of the fact that the main language is Chinese. If you go back further enough, enough of culture was probably introduced to various people through imperialistic of enslaving methods, including some major world religions, or a better example of Latin in the UK which enriched the language.

CultureShould we be proud of having the English language? by ezeagu(op):
We are a country where the highest educational attainment is synonymous with a good grasp of English. There seems to be conflict of whether traditional languages are sidelined for English and it's still seen as a foreign language besides that... see the rest at http://igbobuofu.com/threads/should-we-be-proud-of-having-the-english-language.131/

People comparing Enugu with Lagos and Port Harcourt ought to be ashamed with themselves. You aren't embarrassed. With all that money and the little Enugu State has, Enugu is still drawing landmarks with your cities. Not to talk of the fact that 'Port Harcourt' is not up to twice the population of Enugu.

I wonder what Enugu would have been if the coal industry still ran.
