The Oyo State Government has shut down Bodija market after butchers protested their relocation to Akinyele market.

The protest which was marred by violence saw the butchers clash with Mobile Police Officers.

The closure of the market was made known in a Tweet by the Oyo State Government on their Twitter handle. They wrote;

The Oyo State Government has shut down Bodija market for security reasons. This is an aftermath of the sporadic shooting which occurred earlier today in the market and its environs.

The Aare Laatosa LCDA chairman, Adekunle Oladeji said the closure is to prevent the loss of lives and property of the citizenry.

It is also to guard against the escalation of the violence in the market to other parts of the state. Situation is calm now

Unconfirmed reports has it that some people have lost their lives as a result of gunshots.

The Nigerian Prisons Service, NPS, on Tuesday said the list of successful candidates in its ongoing recruitment exercise is not yet ready.

The Service spokesman, Francis Enobore, who made this known in a statement on Tuesday,​ assured that updates on the recruitment exercise will be duly communicated to members of the public​.

Enobore also warned Nigerians to ignore the purported list of successful candidates circulating on social media.

The statement reads, “The attention of the management of the Nigerian Prisons Service has been drawn to the information making rounds on the Social Media Space, as regards the ongoing recruitment exercise.

“The Nigerian Prisons Service wishes to state unequivocally that the said information which hinges around updates on the recruitment and release of a purported list of successful candidates is false.

”The Nigerian Prisons Service did not consult any Private or corporate organization, whether through mainstream or social media to facilitate the Recruitment Exercise.​

“This information is aimed at defrauding unsuspecting job seekers by fraudsters.”

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday declared that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the review of the operations, working strategies and total overhaul of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, popularly known as SARS.

Osinbajo made this declaration Tuesday evening while responding to question raised by one of the participants at the Oyo State edition of the Youth Town Hall Meeting held at the Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

DAILY POST reports that the town Hall meeting was attended by hundreds of youths from Oyo State, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the state and members of his cabinet, among others.

The VP while confirming that there have been several allegations of uncivilised manner of operations, harassment, intimidation of many innocent Nigerians by SARS operatives, disclosed that the squad would not be totally banned in view of security challenges.

Osinbajo said that the President being a listening person, had ordered the review of their operations in order to meet up with the expectations of Nigerians.

Osinbajo said, “Regards to the question regarding End SARS whether we are going to ban them or not, President Buhari has ordered the review of their operations and very soon this will be done.”

He noted that the need to retain SARS was necessary due to the role they had been playing in the protection of lives and property across the country.

Osinbajo said, “We must have a force to protect the lives and property of the people, you know SARS is Special Anti Robbery Squad, though some of them have been engaging in some activities contrary to their mode of operations.”

Osinbajo maintained that one of the goals of the present administration was to ensure that all Nigerians had food on their table at the appropriate time.

He noted that this necessitated the home grown school feeding which is responsible for the feeding of 8.2 million school children in a day.

He said, “Malnutrition is one of the problems among children, that is why, we said no child should go hungry, we are feeding 8.2 million school children in all the states where we are implementing the program. In Oyo state, in all the primary schools across the state, we are feeding 230,000 primary school children in a day.”

Veteran Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde aka ‘Omosexy’ has been given a membership invite to the 2018 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science popularly known as the Oscars.

Omosexy is listed among the record breaking 928 members to be admitted this year.

The Academy invites notable industry professionals ranging from Actors to Writers, and two categories, Members-at-Large and Associates to accommodate individuals who have no defined branches in motion picture.

It is the world’s pre-eminent movie related organisation, comprised of over eight thousand accomplished men and women working in cinema.

Academy membership is limited to film artists working in the production of theatrically-released motion pictures.

According to the list, Omotola’s invitation stemmed from the recognition she got in the 2010 romantic drama ‘A Private Storm’ and the 2012 thriller ‘Last Flight to Abuja’.

‘A Private Storm’, co-directed by Lancelot Imasuen and Ikechukwu Onyeka, received three nominations at the 7th Africa Movie Academy Awards including awards for Best Makeup, Best Supporting Actor and Best Nigerian Film.

The University of Jos has graduated a whooping 18,348students, out of which 165 graduated with Doctor of Philosophy Degrees (PhDs) and 33 others graduated with first class.

This was made known by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sebastian Maimako, on Saturday at the 29th and 30th combined convocation of the university.

Prof. Sebastian Maimako said that in the bachelor’s degree category, 1,950 graduated with a second class upper division, 5,738 second class lower, 3,149 third class and 351 pass degree.

The VC said that 734 passed and qualified in medicine and pharmacy, 399 got Diplomas, 103 Postgraduate Diplomas, 2,906 masters degrees and 2,820 were a backlog of those who could not be awarded degrees in the last convocation.

The vice-chancellor urged the graduate students to be good ambassadors of the university.

Three distinguished Nigerians were also awarded honourary doctorate degrees during the convocation ceremony.

They are;

Nigeria vs Iceland was a memorable one for every football lover in the country.

The Super Eagles fans saw their side topple Iceland 2-0 in a game that boosted their chances of qualifying to the next round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Many fans took to Twitter and the streets to celebrate the emphatic victory.

But one media that saw things the other was has gotten bashed.

The Guardian when writing their match report didn’t make it seem like a victory for the eagles.

They titled the post: Nigeria’s Ahmed Musa punishes wasteful Iceland to give Argentina hope

First, they made it seem like it was the wastefulness of Iceland that gave Nigeria the win, even though the Eagles saw more of the ball and chances.

Secondly, they said the win gives Argentina hope. What about Nigeria? Are they hopeless ���?

Well, this didn’t go down well with most Nigerians as they took to Twitter to bash the Guardian for the unprofessional title.

Many claimed that such post steamed down from the bias they have towards the eagles.

A Grade I Area Court, Karmo area of Abuja, today, ordered the remand of a 27-year-old Pastor, Emmanuel Ukaegbu, in prison arraigned for criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The judge, Inuwa Maiwada, gave the order after Ukaegbu of Abia State, pleaded guilty to a two-count charge leveled against him.

Maiwada adjourned the case until June 25, for sentencing.

The prosecutor, Ifeoma Ukagha, told the court that one pastor Samuel Oguche, on behalf of the general overseer of Omega Power Ministry Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwagwa Police Station Abuja, on June 2.

Ukagha said the complainant alleged that sometimes in February 2018, the church entrusted Ukaegbu with electronic and household equipment meant for the Church, which he diverted.

Ukagha said that Ukaegbu made away with tiger generator valued N15, 000, key board valued N70, 000, gas cylinder valued N6, 000 and a standing fan value yet unknown.

He said all effort made by the police to trace and recover the items proved abortive.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

Former Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, has lost his wife, Hajiya Zainab Murtala Nyako.

Zainab Nyako passed on at the Federal Medical Center Yola after a brief illness in the wee hours of Wednesday, at the age of 63.

She was reportedly rushed to FMC Yola after she collapsed on Tuesday at about 4:00pm and died at the hospital some hours later.

Nyako was survived by her husband, Murtala Nyako, six children, her aged mother as well as 10 grand children.

Family source said she will be buried 2:00pm at the Nyako family house in Dougirei, Yola according to Islamic rites.

Late Nollywood actress Aisha Abimbola Omoge Campus has been immortalised by a real estate firm in Ogun state.

Fresh Forest Nigeria Ltd revealed last week that the firm has named a street after the actress in a newly opened estate at Igbesa area of Ogun state.

Here is what FFN Ltd spokesperson, Murphy Alabi said about the company’s plan to honour the late thespian.

“Aisha has been our ambassador for years and we will surely miss her. In order to immortalise her, the management has decided to name a street in our estate at Igbesa after her. The street will be called Aisha Abimbola Cresent.”

The actress died of breast cancer in Toronto, Ontario Canada on the 15th of May 2018.

Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Muhammadu Buhari government of allegedly shortchanging the state government in the Paris Club refunds to the tune of $20million.

The party alleged that this was to weaken the Ayo Fayose administration and portray it in bad light to the advantage of APC governorship candidate, Kayode Fayemi.

PDP, in a statement by Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, said going by documents from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and the Federal Ministry of Finance, Ekiti State was due to get $69million as the remaining part of the refunds, but had been reduced to $49million.

“We have it on good authority that the $20 million removed would be part of the funds to be used by the APC and Fayemi for the coming July 14 governorship election in the state.

“One wonders why the discrepancy in the figures. The consultant employed by the NGF came out with the initial figure and for no reason, the new figure we are hearing is being touted as the dues of the state,” he said.

Adebayo said that due to the fear that the expected donors to the campaign fund of Fayemi might not be forthcoming, the federal government had surreptitiously mutilated the documents bearing the exact figures due to the state and diverted the campaign funds in an attempt to foist Fayemi on Ekiti State.

“This is the reason behind the statement made by Fayemi that he would make use of logistics to win the governorship election come 14th July”, he added.

“The permutation in the Presidency is that if the Paris Club refunds get to Ekiti State before the election, it will be used to settle arrears of salary owed workers which will eventually be an added advantage for the PDP to actualise landslide victory as it recorded in 2014 when Fayemi was defeated in all the 16 local government areas of the state.

“It’s just unfortunate that the APC-led federal government could descend to this wicked antics against the workers of Ekiti State just because of an election which would eventually be lost by the APC candidate.

“We advise the Federal government to have a rethink on this draconian step because it’s retrogressive and it will not only be counter-productive but adds to the indices of bad governance which Nigerian are familiar with in the APC government since its inauguration both at the center and some states where the party hold sway.”

Nigeria began their 2018 World Cup campaign on a bad note, losing 2-0 to Croatia on Saturday night.

The result leaves the Super Eagles bottom of Group D.

But what other things did we learn from the game?

1. Rohr got it all wrong: We all know that 4-3-3 is his beloved formation, but it was obvious from the last friendly matches that 3-5-2 suits this team. Because it is the formation that brings out the best in Alex Iwobi, who is by far the creative hub of this team. And also free the wingbacks to provide width, while Mikel Obi and Wilfred Ndidi bring solidity at the base of midfield.

2. Croatia were not that special: For all the talk of their firebrand midfield, the Croats didn’t exactly blow the Super Eagles away. What gave them the edge and ultimately the victory, was the fine margins in football. It would be interesting to see how they fare against Argentina in their second game.

3. All or nothing: The Eagles take on Iceland in the next match on Friday. Before the tournament, this was a game we wrote off as three points. However, having played a creditable 1-1 draw with Argentina, you can’t toss Iceland aside. But for Nigeria, it will be all or nothing. Anything other than a win, means they are out.

4. Unlucky Etebo: Oghenekaro Etebo had a decent game overall. He was a mobile and energetic presence in midfield and repaid Rohr’s faith. There was nothing he could do about the first goal Nigeria conceded and I hope Rohr sticks with him for the next game.

5. Bad subs: Rohr has earned a reputation for being a ‘second-half coach’. However, his substitutions were very poor. First, he didn’t revert to a 3-5-2. And when he had to pull out a player, it was Alex Iwobi! Not Mikel Obi. Or Victor Moses. Even Kelechi Iheanacho seemed to slip onto the pitch. A real mess.

The Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, has reacted to reports quoting him as saying he would dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His spokesman, Lere Olayinka, said the governor did not and will never make such statement.

A press release he signed on Saturday reads: “Kindly disregard statement being circulated by members of the APC in Ekiti State that Governor Ayodele Fayose said “If defecting to APC will solve Ekiti problems, he will join APC and nobody can stop him.”

“The statement was part of the many lies being circulated by the Ekiti APC and its unsellable governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, obviously to suppress reports of his rejection by Ekiti people.

“Even when APC was still basking in the euphoria of its electoral success of 2015, Governor Fayose made it abundantly clear then that he will never have anything to do with the party, not to talk about now that the party is nearing its political grave.

“As we approach the July 14 governorship election, it is expected that several lies will be told by the APC and its sinking candidate to confuse the unsuspecting members of the public.

“Therefore, members of the public are urged to disregard any statement not attributed to me or the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Idowu Adelusi.

“Most importantly, Governor Fayose’s comments on issues (both national and State) are always on his Twitter Handle @GovAyoFayose.

“Any statement credited to Governor Fayose and cannot be found either on his Twitter Handle or my Facebook Timelines and Twitter Handle should be DISREGARDED.”

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has confirmed he will remain at the club despite interest from Barcelona, the France striker has finally buried speculation over his future.

Griezmann finally spoke out yesterday, in a bizarre production to reveal his future lies at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The player spoke to his father and brother in the documentary screened by Movistar as they gave him advice on his next move.

He also stroked his horses and played basketball with his sibling as the tension built ahead of his final decision.

"My fans, my team, my home," he finally exclaimed in a message that was also released simultaneously on his Twitter page and shared by his relieved club.

"I have decided to stay," said Griezmann.

"They are doing everything they can to keep Atletico growing and so that they can play the Champions League final, hopefully at home [in 2019].

"They are making an effort to bring top players. This is going to make a difference."

"I feel there are things to do with Atletico," Griezmann added.

"If they [Atleti] buy good players we can win the Champions League here and enter the history of the club. Here, I would make history. At Barcelona, I would just be one more.

Gerard Pique has wished Antoine Griezmann success despite the Atletico Madrid star's decision to snub Barcelona.

Writing on Twitter, Pique thanked Griezmann for letting his documentary team witness his decision.

"Another way to see the footballer's life and his doubts to make the most important decision of his career," Pique tweeted.

"Thanks to the team at Kosmos Studios and especially to Griezmann for these last few weeks.

"You decided to stay at Atleti and I hope you go great this season!"

A student of Ajayi Crowther University, Dara has reportedly lost her life after being involved in an auto crash moments after her graduation thanksgiving.

The sad news was posted by a friend of hers who claimed he was with her in the car when the crash happened.

The friend reporting the news posted a picture of himself and the Late Dara, which he added the caption;

I took this picture with this lady about three hours ago at her graduation venue. We had a fatal accident on our way back from her Graduation Thanksgiving. She died on the spot. 4Badly injured. God and Seat Belt Saved me.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hit back at Yaya Toure denying accusations he’s racist in an interview on Spanish television.

“He knows I’m not,” insisted Guardiola when asked about Toure’s previous claims the Spaniard “has problems with Africans”.

“What do you want me to do,” added Guardiola in an interview with TV3.

“We were together for two years. (He had) 365 and 365 (days) to tell me (his feelings).

“It’s not important, it doesn’t matter.”

Ivorian international midfielder Toure had told France Football magazine earlier this week that he had questioned whether his skin “colour” had contributed to him being little used by Guardiola during City’s record breaking run to the Premier League title last season.

“He insists he has no problems with black players, because he is too intelligent to be caught out,” Toure had said.

“But when you realise that he has problems with Africans wherever he goes, I ask myself questions.”

Toure, who also played under Guardiola at Barcelona before the Catalan sold him to City, pointed to the treatment his compatriot Wilfried Bony received when Guardiola arrived at City.

Bony was quickly loaned out to Stoke City for the 2016/17 season before being sold to Swansea City.

Toure said “Pep brutally got rid of Bony”, although the Ivorian’s record since leaving City — four goals in 25 league appearances — hardly suggests Guardiola was mistaken.
