I actually go to my village regularly. I have a house there, many people from my ethnic group don't go home because dem dey fear witch. Ignorant fools!!!!

People like you and my ignorant relatives make Nigeria what it is, you are waiting for a miracle to improve your life and any setback you blame on witches.
The day they make special ssistamt or commissioner, etc you will be so corrupt, why because you will believe it is your time and you have overcome the witches and wizards.

Rather than work hard and use good ideas to better yourself you are looking for old women or young children to blame.

When they accuse your mother, sister and daughters maybe then you will see the error of your backward ways.

Business / Re: Russia Warns Nigeria Over Supreme Court Ruling On Rusal by faithin9ja: 8:45am On Jul 13, 2012
Wallie: Scary how people are just so quick to blame the US for their dog eating poo instead of eba! Let’s try to recap the facts as it happened:

1. RUSAL and BFI Group sent bids to BPE over ALSCON;
2. RUSAL submitted a bid for $205 million;
3. BFI submitted a bid for $410 million;
4. RUSAL did not pay the required $1 million for participating in the bid process but not disqualified;
5. BFI declared winner on 14th April 2004 due to higher bid;
6. BPE disqualifies BFI because they claimed the 10% bid price was not paid within 15 working-days;
7. BFI takes BPE to court;
8. BFI wins in the Supreme Court.

Yet some conspiracy theorists are blaming the US? Isn’t clear that RUSAL was highly favored from the beginning and the privatization process was a scam? Have you guys seen the legislative report that ALSCON was really worth $3 billion? Let's even assume that the $3 billion figure is highly exaggerated and ALSCON is really worth half of that. Aren't you guys curious who made out with the remaining $1.295 billion?

True word

And since the Russians have taken over how much have they actualy produced? They blame lack of power, yet they say they have their own power plant.
It obvious inconivance with corrt Nigerian officials these Russians bought this plant at half the price the Americans were prepared to pay.

To those my US hating friends, which company would rather work for; Chevron or Gazprom?

For once our courts have been able to take a brave decision and Russia starts diplomatic pressure, can this be right?
Business / Re: Why Is Gtbank Naira Mastercard Not Working On Facebook & Google Advertisement by faithin9ja: 8:29am On Jul 13, 2012
2buff: Because Nigerian credit cards and destination shipping are still not globally accepted yet on the Internet since their revocation years back.
You have your yahoo yahoo boys to thank for that.

See ediots those days buying containers full of laptops with other peoples credit cards. The same thieving style your politicians do. Senseless and oblivious thieving devoid of tact or fore-thought towards the future. Also like Nigerian robbers who after thieving from a house, decide to kill the residents too just for giggles, forgetting that if they kill everybody they rob, who will then be around to rob a few years later?

Nigeria had to be struck off the E-commerce map for the good of everyone.

Rubbish and baseless sentiment, Nigeria didn't have international recognised credit cards years ago because our exchange And banking laws did not allow it. The yahoo yahoo boys you complain about are usually based in US or UK from where they send their ill gotten property to Nigeria.

Current Nigerian cards don't work usually because of incompatible address and inability for ecommerce sites to verify the cards. These cards are good and easy to use in foreign countries either via ATM or in the retail outlets sometimes they don't work because of network problems.

We are so quick to make statements on sentiments.

hercules07: In the 80s traffic on Ikorodu road used to be hell in the mornings, it was usually so bad on the Jibowu to Yaba bridge that my dad would be reading his papers while driving (never liked that as I dreaded him hitting vehicles), the trains moved like clock work too, infact, whenever we went for center around apapa road, I will walk down to Iddo to join the trains moving at 2pm or 4pm from Iddo to Agege dropping on the way. The odd and even numbers also helped to decongest the roads, though people got around it by having the PRESS sticker.

The odd and even number started in 1977 in time for the FESTAC 77, it was meant as temporary solution. Odd & even was the brain child of the first OBJ regime.Then all Federal ministries where on the Island, whilst in 1976, the state capital was moved from Lagos Island to Ikeja when the 19 states were created.

@ faithin9ja: please stop being pedantic here.

There is a difference between a culture where child-brides are the norm as seen during the
time of your nanna ( grandmother) and a failing in a system where children fall out of the
safety net.... in a culture that speaks against or prohibits child-brides.

Your nanna was probably married or had the family support, the 15yr old spoken off, was NOT.

Preaching on the need for the modern youth to have an inner sense of well-being and
placing them in a position to be able compete on the global platform is not a bad thing, is it

There are different models to use. If you feel sending them to sell or "hawk" things will make them
understand the value of money, so be it.

Afterall, many innovative businesses were built or at least started in some teenager's bedroom.

To each, his own.

.

I concede to your points even though I was being sarcastic.

However, I feel the OP is being too generalistic and over simplistic in laying blame and not recognizing today's youth are those developing the 'apps' we use on our new technology tomorrow.

cap28:

You are missing the point.

Those nigerians that you mentioned all have one thing in common - they are neo colonial agents -

what is neo colonialism?

Neocolonialism (also Neo-colonialism) is the geopolitical practice of using capitalism, business globalization, and cultural imperialism to control a country, in lieu of either direct military control or indirect political control, i.e. imperialism and hegemony. The term neo-colonialism was coined by the Ghanaian politician Kwame Nkrumah, to describe the socio-economic and political control that can be exercised economically, linguistically, and culturally, whereby promotion of the culture of the neo-colonist country, facilitates the assimilation of the colonised people, and thus opens the national economy to the multinational corporations of the neo-colonial country.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neocolonialism

Three weapons are being used by europeans against africans in order to dominate, exploit and own us:

CAPITALISM
BUSINESS GLOBALIZATION
CULTURAL IMPERIALISM

the job of those nigerians that you mentioned above is to assist in the implementation of the neo colonial project on behalf of their european and american backers.

All those european and american leaders you mentioned are AGENTS OF CAPITALISM - their job is to fool their respective electorates into thinking that they represent the interests of the people when in reality they represent the interests of - international banks, oil companies, arms dealers and the super rich oligarchs.

try reading up on some of the economic policies of Margaret Thatcher and you will find out how popular she was amongst ordinary working people in britain.

Clued up black americans have lost all confidence in Obama as they have finally discovered that he is an agent of wall street and a front man for the oligarchs who run america and europe.

Yes it does because if you are a subjugated and defeated people you will be under the control of an external force. In our own case we as Nigerians are a defeated people who are currently under the control of britain and america who dictate our economic and political policies.

This is why people like you think there is nothing wrong with allowing your kids to watch a western controlled media that are pumping the heads of future generations with garbage and making them focus on enjoyment rather than anything that will make them useful and productive members of society. This is the same tactic that has been used on black americans - first of all they were prohibited from gaining any form of education (during slavery) later when they were allowed to read and write they were given a substandard education under the Jim Crow apartheid system.

blacks in america are still kept ignorant through poverty because in america the colour of your skin dictates your economic position on the racial totem pole, as a result the majority of black americans attend sub standard schools as they can not afford to attend fee paying schools with higher standards. In nigeria many young people do not get a quality education as the nigerian govt has been cutting spending on education in nigeria consistently since 1985 under instructions from the US controlled IMF.

Fortunately my children have out grown Disney channel and are now graduates. One is mechanic, the other works for a large media house as graphic designer. I tried to instill in my children the culture of hard work, smart work, dignity in labour and ultimately contentment.

Having lived through Irangate, watergate, having studied socio-economic politics of the mid to late 20th century, I cannot begin to start an arguement with you here, other than to say fortunately we leave a free society which allows us have our views.Between you and the young Nigerian who believes in ' my time will come philosophy' or 'settle culture'. I would grudgingly chose you, even though many of your arguments are flawed, your heart is in the right place.

Perhaps when you are older (this is not meant as condescending) you will realize that there is no grand conspiracy, there is no room where 10 or 12 white people gather together to control world, and better to still you may come to realize that some of those that you now consider heroes also have their own agendas which often do not include any betterment for people like you and I.

cap28: I

China has overtaken the united states in terms of economic production and is now the economic engine of the world - they were only able to do this because of sustained opposition to western domination and subjugation.

Over 100 years earlier in 1900 the chinese fought against the combined forces of europe and america during the Boxer rebellion. the chinese suffered losses but huge lessons were learned and their experience in that war against europe and america spurred them on to the industrialisation of their country.

Iran is a great country, which has used its vast oil reserves to develop and educate its own people. The Iranians freed themselves from anglo american economic enslavement by overthrowing the Shah of Iran who was an american puppet installed in order to ensure that america would always have easy and cheap access to Iran's vast oil deposits. All of that was brought to an end when the courageous people of Iran revolted in 1979 and nationalised their oil industry. America and britain have never forgiven Iran for this and are now gearing up to destroy the country as they did to prosperous Libya. Research and development happens when a country is in a stable condition and can dedicate vast resources into research, Iran has been under seige from europe and america for over 30 years and therefore time and money that coudl be used for research and economic development has been channelled into military spending in order to defend the territorial integrity of a nation that could be attacked by europe or america at any time. America armed and financed Saddam Hussein of Iraq who launched a war against Iran which lasted for 8 years - the objective being that Iraq would destroy or at least weaken Iran making it easy for the americans and europeans to swoop in and over take Iran. Do you know the americans supplied saddam hussein with chemical weapons which he used on the iranian trooops? Despite all of this the Iranians succeeded in defeating the US backed Iraqi troops.

The worst part of all of this is that the US govt secretly sold arms to Iran during this war in other words they armed both sides in a conflict that they orchestrated.

The reason you queue for visas to the US and europe is because those countries are now prosperous and wealthy as a result of the wealth that they stole from african countries beginning with slavery and continuing to this present day now in the form of neo liberal economic policies which say that a european has the right to reduce your own country to endless poverty using debt enslavement - you are now condemned to the life of a beggar - begging at their embassies all over the world in order to escape the misery and poverty that they caused in your country of origin. Your country's wealth now lies in the coffers of the western banks and corporations and if you are "fortunate" to get a visa to travel to any of those countries to live and work you will be condemned to a life of a servant - doing all of the jobs that their people don't want and still being treaed badly on top of it - that is their gift to you!

The leaders of Cuba, North Korea and Iran had the intelligence, foresight and vision to understand what european and american enslavement would mean for their citizens as they had already seen what had happened and is still happening to africans all over the world.

Where i live is neither here nor there, the important thing is that i am aware and awake.

and this all boils down to how we bring up our children?

There is no 'free market' anywhere. Government has to exercise some form of control on the direction of the economy. If markets would be perfectly free then what is the essence of government?

Young man try to think outside the confines of this 'closed Nigerian society'. Because we rely almost totally on oil for our FX, hence the government via Central Bank can control FX.

If you, Mr Pukkah are based in Lagos or PH and I, Mr Faithin9ja based in Houston Texas, decide to use your IT skills to build a website for me, you do the job online, I pay you $5000 for the job, would you really want the Nigerian government to restrict your access to the $5000? wouldn't you like to go to a bank or BDC and exchange those dollars for the best rate available?

In more economically developed societies the government does not control how much money flows in and out of the country

It is becoming a national embarrassment. Sometime ago, I marked a couple of exam scripts at the behest of a lecturer friend of mine in one of these fledgling bread and butter private universities, and I was appalled to see university students using "text-speak" abbreviattions so freely. . . ."d", "sth", "4", "xteristics", etc. My goodness! In an examination? It was especially bad towards the end of the scripts; I reckon the students were rushing to beat the submission deadline and had to resort to almost exclusive use of abbreviations in their answers. Needless to say I had a migrane after that ordeal. If I had my way I would have failed all of them, but my friend pointed out that he was obliged to ensure that they passed, otherwise his job might be on the line. Yet these half-baked nitwits would graduate in "flying colours" and get decent jobs ahead of better qualified candidates - because of their family connections and whatnot. This country is a huge joke.

Languages change!!! I personally cannot stand 'textspeak' but I have to acknowledge that languages evolve over time. After all how many people Shakespearean English, even our indigenous languages change oer time, do we speak Yoruba or Igbo the same way as 70 or 80 years ago?

cap28: OP you are so on point (excuse the pun)the fact that you have recognised that something is wrong tells me that you are very observant and intelligent.

The fact of the matter is that we live in an age now where young people are being targeted by the media at an unprecedented level. This is no coincidence, neither is it something that is unique to nigeria, this is also happening all over the western industrialised countries as well. The objective is to distract the future generation and keep them focused on irrelevancies and trivia rather than focusing on productive activities that can actually enable them to understand how their govts and the world work. Many young people today are so ignorant that many know nothing beyond the garbage that is spewed out by these junk tv channels that seem to have mysteriously proliferated in the last 15 years. As you have correctly noticed the craze now is for talent shows, reality tv, endless and mindless music videos - in short what you have now is the celebration and deification of banality, stup.idity, sex.ual promiscuity, ignorance and foolish.ness on a level never before seen. this is all going to create a generation of brain dead imbe.ciles whose sole preoccupation in life will be enjoyment with no hope or vision of how to survive in a world which is rapidly becoming more and more cut throat.

If you look at countries that have sheilded their indigenes from western influences like China, Iran and many islamic countries you will find that the moral fibre of their societies is still intact, what you have in nigeria is a complete saturation of our air waves with western imported junk which is going to be our downfall. Why are our youths more interested in singing competitions and reality shows than research and technology? Why are our youths politically ignorant when they live on a continent that is currently under US and european military occupation via USafricom? why is it that our youths do not understand what neo colonialism is when most african govts spend more on debt servicing than they spend on health care or education?

I remember reading on a south african website some months back that DSTV (which by the way is run and owned by white south africans) was set up to numb and dumb down the minds of young black south africans to ensure that they would never become as politically aware as their parents, in doing so this new generation of politically ignorant young people would become harmless robots who would never ever become a threat to europe or america(their masters), i can now see how prescient that statement was because all i see on these numerous african tv channels are an endless supply of talent shows, beauty contests, reality shows ad nauseam.

People please wake up lest this upcoming generation end up worse off than their parents whose lives have already been destroyed as a result of the economic enslavement by europe and america.

your usual anti-west, conspiracy clap trap.

Tell me what new invention that has been a positive influence in the world has Iran or even China brought to the table in the past 50 years?
why do we queue for visa to US, UK, Europe even Dubai ? why don't we queue for visa's for Cuba, North Korea and Iran, as matter of fact wheer do you live?

justirich: Dear Nigerians, the reasons for mass failure of our teenagers in public exams are not far fetched.

1 FACEBOOK,YAHOO,TWITTER,MYSPACE and generally browsing on the internet instead of reading their books

2 ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE and EUROPEAN FOOTBALL LEAGUES, it is easy for an average nigerian teenager to know the tha names of all chelsea players but same youths cannot tell you the square root 25 in mathematic. Worse still is that these days instead of seeing inscriptions like UNIVERISTY or SCHOLARS on the exercise books, what you see are pictures of paloma,Drogba,Beyonce,Omotola etc

3 DSTV,Home video and african movie magic, watching television and films endlessly.European champions league,English premiership,Barca,Blues,Chelsea,MANU etc

4 GSM and BLACKBERRY, the average nigerian teenager uses the latest and expensive gsm phones just to show off that they belong,when they are actually nothing.

5 GSM TEXT LANGUAGE, I will not be suprised to see students write words like your(for YOUR), 2moro( For tomorrow) in their EXAM sheets

6 QUEST FOR CHEAP FAME AND WEALTH, The goverment,electronic media(tv and radio) and companies have not been helpful at all.The average nigerian youth especially the girls want to BE silver Birds most beautiful Girl and get cheap money and fame(Nobody has remembered all the previous miss world,but we still remember MOTHER THERESA),they want to win IDOLS WEST AFRICA, they want to be in NOLLYWOOD, they want to be TWO-FACE,they want to win maltina street dance ,they want to win starquest and GULDER ULTIMATE SEARCH

Warning is that wealth gotten by vanity shall DIMINISH.

7 The new craze of TALENT SHOWS: Suddenly The only talents our youths now have are music,dancing,acting and stand up comedies, they no longer have talents for maths,physics and entrepreneurism.
Check out the list:MTN PROJECT FAME,BIG BROTHER,STARQUEST,MALTINA DANCE HALL,AMBO,GUILDER,IDOLS WEST AFRICA,PEAK TALENT HUNT ETC…What a bad distraction
It is only COWBELL that sponsors national mathematics competition and give scholarships to outstanding students in UME exams

8 EVER BUSY PARENTS, Parents are always in search for money,business and jobs,they live home 5am and come back 10pm leaving their children to the care of house helps and teachers in private schools. THEY have forgotten that out of the 24 hours in a day their children will only spend 8am-2pm(6 hrs) in school and in hands of the teachers the remaining 18hrs is spent in the home(wether sleep or not).these same ever busy parents can not look into the books of their teenagers,they don't monitor waht the teenagers watch nor who they associate with.

9 WEAK GOVT POLICIES:The people in Govt see all these vanities on tele and radio and they will not nip them in the bud, because they are naïve and corrupt and so the rot continues

Source

Rubbish!!!!

every generation believes the younger generation is in a worse position.
Just because you grew up without a television that means our children should not have a television?
The world is evolving, our parents, (I am almost 50) decried the fact we listened to hip hop & disco music. They didn't know shalamar, kool and the gang or public enemy, now my children listen to D'banj & P square. We watched videos, my children play video games, we read comics, now children are their own heroes in the comics (ie video games).

We all pretend to come from nuclear family - mummy, daddy and 3 to 5 children. Past generations made us believe that was the correct way, however in real life we all have half brothers and sisters. My mama pickin, my papa pickin, my papa wife, etc

When I was growing up there were 13 universities in Nigeria, now there are over 50 (albeit some of dubious quality)

The youth of today are the ones who are bring new technology and developments to society.

In my grandparents generation, the few who were encouraged to go to school, were encouraged to be teachers, court clerks and administrators. The next generation wanted their children to be doctors, lawyers or engineers, in the modern world we expect our children IT gurus, entertainers, top sports people, even a top newscaster.

So stop knocking the youth, the world is changing

So what do these BDC guys do they simply

this a free society, government has no right to tell me what to do with my money or my dollars, I exchange my naira for dollars, if I like I 'smoke' the dollars.

BDC job is to provide FX to those that want it, it not the BDC job to ask you what you want to do with you dollars you have bought from them. You cannot blame the BDC.

If the government decides to go back to the totalitarian centralist control that has failed in the past, then the government to should place restrictions on what you can use for dollars for; we have our own schools so no need for school fees abroad, we have Aba factories so no need to import shoes, we have cassava bread, so no need to import wheat, and so and so forth. But these policies have never worked in the past. But it's not the BDC's fault.

the sacking of those generals was political, it was to avoid possible rebellion against his government. Haven't you wondered how we are still leaving in this mess with an able milatary, it is because those their are loyal to the government. Just my notion.

you are obviously a product of our failed education system in Nigeria. So you believe it's a soldier's job to take over power if they do like any particular government, I pity ignorant fools like you and one day you too will want to have a responsible position in society.

lol- just making sure.

Well you'll be surprised. Isn't Wole Soyinka a pagan?
The last guy I met who was into into all the voodoo nonsense was a senior in the company I worked for. Very rich very respected, part time 'wizard'.

So even though you might be right about these people being a minority, you cannot use peoples personal beliefs to decide what they may contribute to society.

Being a 'pagan' doesn't mean you must believe juju. It means you worship the gods of your fore fathers. I don't believe FELA believed in juju to magic or create harm but he believed in following the religion of his ancestors.

The 'oyibo' wizard as long as his decision making is not guided by his beliefs, then he can carry on. but if like the majority of the people on this thread, he lives in fear of 'juju', then his, like those on this thread will have warped sense of reasoning

what you have said is half truth, sanusi carried out a good intention in a very bad way. Who told you that people didnt go to these banks to collect their money, the customers of PHB and the customers of Mainstreet are not the same at all. The whole taking over was so public and terribly done , it has driven the banks to a much earlier death.

there are 2 branches of Bank PHB on the road where my office is. The day the declared it was now Mainstreet bank customers were attending the bank as per normal. Ii even paid in over N300,000 into a customer's account. He did not panic or tell me to pay into another bank.

Do you think if Atuche was still there today that there would be anything like Bank PHB or mainstreet. The bank would have collapsed, all the staff would have lost their jobs and depositors lost their money, the only happy people would be the major owners and directors including the Atuche and Co.

Bank directors treated these banks like their private property and depositors money like their father's money. We are now blaming the person who clean up the mess.

are you trying to say 'juju' is a black thing? You are very wrong there.

I swear oyibos are even more advanced in their voodoo horoscope witch craft homeopath nonsense practice.

It's not exclusive to blacks at all.

The Oyibo people that practise homeopathy (which as you know is just unproven herbal medicine), horoscopes, occultism are also all rubbish and not only does their rubbish not work, they to contribute nothing to society. These type of foolish Oyibo are in the minority, whereas in Africa and Nigeria this kind of foolish thinking is in the majority, how can we progress, when even a research lecturer will not do anything in his life without first 'consulting' , you expect such a person to invent something meaningful.

Any of my staff who bring this backward thinking to my business, I get rid of.

How can the Blackman progress? When our educated Internet savvy youth are arguing on the merits and effacy of 'juju'. How are any of you better than the 85 year old man in the village who has never seen a large town? Tomorrow you will be sending your CV to Shell, Cadbury, KPMG, trying to get a world class job that will send around the world, yet in your small minds believe somebody in the village is 'doing' you.

Oyibo will continue to make their societies better, whilst we wallow in ignorance. Scared of our own shadows.

Instead of thinking how we will stop someone with an AK47 or bomb blowing up my church on a Sunday, I am scared of an old man with a calabash in the village.

By the way before you think this somebody who doesn't he is talking about, I have lived a full life, my parents have taken me to all type of native doctors, juju men, we attended 'cele' , Sat gurhuru maharaj, Pentecostal, etc all na rubbish
