Music/Radio / Simi And The "Jamb Question" - By Charles Novia by fako1(m): 3:30pm On Aug 18, 2015
I just watched a musical video of a supposedly new female act called Simi, titled ‘Jamb Question’. It’s the first time I actually took notice of the video or song and I was impressed.

First, the song is quite a beautiful composition with simple melodies steeped in our highlife roots with a tinge of a neo – urban flavour to it which makes it appeal to both the old and new generation. It’s quite uplifting to know that we still have great songwriters who can borrow from the rich inspiration of the past to create something novel for a new generation fast losing its history.

Simi, the singer, did justice to the song and her looks in the video though was a bit off. I felt she had too much make up on which distracted from the narratives of the video. But her singing is simple and good with no extra frills in her rendition which would have spoilt the song if she had gone overboard. She kept the song mellow and within the confines of her voice pitch and one could really feel the emotions in her voice when she signs disdainfully about the guy irritating her with ‘Jamb Questions’.

And it was quite ingenious too to compose a song from a street parlance as ‘Jamb Question’ is to us in Nigeria. The trick is to get it right and I think this song did. Whoever the Producer of the track is deserves kudos. Sometimes the new music producers miss the essence of producing highlife songs and leave out the horns arrangements completely most times. But this Producer bridged that gap with the soothing notes of the Sax. That is so cool.

Of course seeing the trending artiste, Falz, in the video made it for me too. He played his part quite well by wording the lyrics where Simi gives her narratives in a well-rehearsed performance and was able to bring to the screen his growing personality which has earned him a fan base. I first saw Falz onscreen a few weeks back in the ‘Hello Bae’ video and I was immediately struck by his elevation of his dead-pan affectation into a popular art form. I was the more pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Falz is the son of popular Lawyer, Femi Falana!

The song ‘Jamb Question’ reminds me a bit, in flow and rendition, of one of Mo’Cheddah’s hits, ‘ Dus Nambri’ but Simi gave it her all in her own way. I have been taking my time to scout for some lead characters in a musical movie which I intend to produce later in 2016 and I and my team had pencilled down singers, Chidinma and Mo’Cheddah on our shortlist. I’m adding Simi to that list too.

It’s a good break out by the young lady to the music scene and while I have my suspicions that the song might not be much of a monster hit on the club circuits because of the lopsided Nigerian youth kind of musical appreciation, it certainly would be a cool classic for years to come.

Well done, X3M Music.

Music/Radio / Open Letter: Skiibii Must Die by fako1(m): 1:08pm On Aug 15, 2015
By "The Strategist"

When news broke yesterday that rising act ‘Skiibii is dead’, I wasn’t shocked, I wasn’t tensed because it is too common of Nigerian celebrities to come up with unnecessary publicity stunts to promote and sell their materials, so, I didn’t believe the story and was patiently waiting for their failed mission.

Skiibii who isn’t as popular as the likes of Korede Bello, Lil Kesh, Adekunle Gold, Ink Edwards, Kiss Daniel might be so desperate for overnight fame.

However, it shows the desperation and level of ignorance in the label and how far they are willing to go to get Buzz and push a song not minding the consequences.

It is absolutely uncalled for to frame the death of Skiibii just to destabilize his fans and prospective fans. I wonder if they thought of how fans would react to this before they embarked on their failed mission. If a dog dies, the owner mourns, if the death of the dog gets media coverage, thousands of people will definitely mourn and pity the owner who knows the worth of the dog.

It is a weakness on the part of Five Star Music and the label’s team to have publicised the death of the young lad, SkiiBii when they were not sure if he was dead or not. I however hold a strong motif that Five Star Music cooked up the story for the public to eat.

With the strength of KCee, Harrysong, Millionaire E-Money and Soso, it is a flaw to have faked the death of Skiibii and a high sense of no regard for the fans and lovers of the above mentioned artistes. Kcee came to limelight without controversy; Harrysong who I respect so much hits the A-List point with hard word, passion for music, prayers and support with NO MONEY! Why not help Skiibii grow without blemish?

Skiibii undoubtedly is an upcoming artiste who needs to be natured, bred and monitored with highly intellectual branding. Although, In PR bad publicity can be good publicity if well managed.
Don’t you think Nigerians are tired of useless publicity stunts? This stunt is a failure on the part of Five Star Music’s PR team, it only shows they need to step up and increase their knowledge. Who will eat the cooked story? Five Star Music management must eat and paused off music lovers allover the country are chanting on one voice ‘Skiibii must die.’!!!!!!...

TV/Movies / What’s Nollywood’s Effect On The NFI? by fako1(m): 9:08am On Jul 28, 2015
By Chris Ihidero

Why is the National Film Institute still in Jos? Why is there no NFI liaison office in Lagos? What’s Nollywood’s effect on the NFI? What’s wrong with us? Where is Baba Sala’s professorial chair? Ogunde? Why is TK not lecturing at the NFI? What’s wrong with us? When are we going to learn that young storytellers need to start by learning from Zeb Ejiro , Ralph Nwadike, Tunji Bamishigbon and Taju Adepetu? Were these not the people that gave us our TV classics? Why are they not good enough but one boy or girl from the New York Film Academy is an expert? Why is Joke Silva not giving an acting Masterclass? Why is Sola Sobowale not doing the same? Why have we not set up processes that will make use of their abundant skills and techniques in the training of the next generation of actors? Apparently the method of acting learned in Los Angeles on government money is better. Do we need oyinbo people to come and tell us that Baba Wande is a genius? Did you watch TK’s Ti Oluwa Nile? What is wrong with us? Use your money to train anywhere, that’s your prerogative. I have used my money to do short courses in film schools abroad. But government money? Nkem Owoh is a comic genius. He should be holding masterclasses across the country, but you know, we don’t want that because it’s kinda razz , not Behind at all. Appointments to the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board are still political, so sometimes you get an engineer or born again whip bearer. A strand of your film industry is making phenomenal global impact but your film institute, funded by public funds, sneers at it. #Sigh. The worst condemnation of Nollywood I have heard comes from Nigerians in Nigeria. Meanwhile oyibos can’t stop doing conferences and seminars on it. Our actors are not good enough, right? We now need to go learn screen acting in America, right? Have you seen the following actors perform? Have you seen Sola Sobowale in practically anything in her heyday? Go watch her in Tade Ogidan ‘s Diamond Ring again. Ashewo To Re Mecca? Have you seen Baba Wande in practically ANYTHING? Genius. Anike Obot in Tunde Kelani’s Ayo Ni Mo Fe. Do you know Ayo Mogaji? Did you see that Agbepo film? #Sigh. Have you seen a 34 year-old Joke Silva play Mama Tega on Amaka Igwe ‘s Violated ? Did you ever see her in Owuro Lojo, with Tunji Sotimehin ? I ran into Matt Dadzie‘s son at Eko Hotel the other day. It was a pleasure to tell him how grateful I am for his father’s contributions to Nigerian TV. It took Kunle Afolayan bringing back Sadiq Daba in October 1 for us to remember our dear Brutus and what talents we have had in this country. Maybe some of you are too young to remember, but let those who know tell you what happened when Nosa of Zeb Ejiro ‘s Behind the Clouds died. Why are we not reassured in our essence? Why? Why do we keep seeking validation from others? Why aren’t we learning from India? Please understand that I don’t have anything against film schools abroad or going to them. However, if the government is going to use public funds to do ‘capacity building’, then it makes sense to look inward first. Go abroad on your on money to do finishing. It is that simple really. If Mildred Okwo, Pat Oghre, Tope Oshin, John Njamah or Lancelot Imasuen are not good enough to teach you the basics of directing, and you’d rather have public funds to go abroad and learn Hollywood standards, well go and do it with your father’s or mother’s money. If Victor Sanchez, Emem Isong, Nkiru Njoku, Yinka Ogun, Uduak, Ijeoma Uduma and Tunde Aladese are not good enough to teach you the basics of screenwriting, well dip into your trust fund and go get the fucking ‘Hollywood Standard’ on your own money. No fight inside the matter. Ariyike Oladipupo has created and produced about 5 series for TV. She’s not a good enough producer to teach you? You’re not well. That’s how the people at Lagos Business School went and brought one person who had written one episode of Eastenders or something in all of her 15-year career to come and teach Nollywood people screenwriting. And the devil used them to ask for 450k for the yeye class. I laugh die. Sebi, you people didn’t see Ramsey in Dangerous Twins ? You didn’t see Segun Arinze as Black Arrow, abi? Or Sunday Omobolanle in that film where he was an armed robber? (Forgotten the title.) We can’t respect that, after all sebi it’s just Ramsey, that Surulere boy we all saw grow up. SMH! I don tire, abeg. Those of you saying that NFI does not have to be in Lagos for national development, I don’t know what to say. Does it not bother you that your publicly funded film institute has no presence in your commercial capital where the industry’s trends blossom? Well… Anyways, I am grateful GEJ lost. His good heart was about to ruin Nollywood. All that money was a problem, clearly. Thank God! I trust Buhari , one kobo he won’t give us. Sai baba, sebi you won’t look Uche face? Thank you sir! Not a brass farthing! Sebi if government does not give you money, you all will go back to what you originally wanted to do with your lives before free money brought you to film?

Celebrities / God Won’t Listen To Nigerian Songs. by fako1(m): 2:12pm On Jul 25, 2015
Soft-rock singer cum columunist Etcetera has another interesting piece on Nigerian music.

Shoki hey hey Shoki!” cries a voice from the radio to the beat of a nerve-wracking pandemonium that seems designed to drive you insane.

A quick flick of the dial and “Shakiti bobo” is playing. The worse thing is that the raucous noise emitted by the artiste is no match for the loud, odious din coming from the beat. The lyrics are completely lost – which may not be regrettable to some – but the whole tumult sounds more like bad static than music.

I tuned the dial again. This time it was Olamide screaming “VANESSA VANESSA.”

As the last strains of the song died away, the OAP cheerfully and enthusiastically breaks in, “Yes, that’s for all you listeners out there. That’s the way we do it right here at your cool station. We personalise our playlist to make you feel cool.”

Cool kor, cooler ni…. I felt like telling the OAP that his choice of songs made me feel SICK.

This is simply today’s Nigerian music! Something is terribly WRONG with it! Yet millions around the country – especially the young people – listen to it by the hour. WHY?

What is there about this music that is so gripping? How can something so meaningless hold millions under its spell? Why does it serve as a common denominator – as “the tie that binds” – for so many youths?

Judging from how and what they’re saying and singing, it is easy to conclude that some of these artistes should be taken for mental evaluation! Music mirrors our emotions; it reflects our thoughts; it echoes our activities – it shows us the way we really ARE!

Most Nigerian artistes are confused and bewildered – or they wouldn’t sing songs about not being able to tell right from wrong, or songs which purposely don’t say or mean anything, or which try only to “embody an emotional state that points indirectly to marijuana and crazy sex positions.”

Music – just like other forms of art – is like a social barometer. A strong and healthy society produces dynamic and stimulating music; a diseased and decaying society produces sick and decadent music.

It’s a simple matter of cause and effect!

This is now a SICK SOCIETY and, therefore, it produces SICK MUSIC. It’s just that simple! Both parents and the young people are to blame. My point is, we all don’t have to be a part of this sick society – or its sick music.

Even talking about today’s gospel songs, many are lacking in purpose and quality. The gospel singers are forgetting that God believes in QUALITY. Look at the universe He created! He also believes in human improvement and GROWTH. “Become ye therefore perfect” (Matt. 5:48) and “Grow in grace and knowledge” (II Pet. 3:18), He commands.

God wants His people to grow in the right kind of culture – the right kind of appreciation for the finer things in life. He says that mature Christians are “those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to DISCERN both good and evil” (Heb. 5:14).

God wants us to EXERCISE our five physical senses. He wants us to learn what the true values for the enjoyment of the senses are. One of these senses is hearing. And one of the ways we need to exercise our hearing sense is in the appreciation of quality music. Quality in music involves, first of all, the way it is composed or arranged. Secondly, it involves how the music is performed. And thirdly, the setting (the place and occasion) in which the music is heard.

You attend a concert only to see artistes with a hodgepodge of idiotic noise played from a CD and the audience seated at round tables like they are in a canteen, screaming with mouthful of small chops and ‘samosas’ as every new song is introduced by the performer. What utter nonsense! What is WRONG with us? How did we completely lose our sense of value regarding music? Do we even know the purpose of music?

A mother justifies her daughter who’s listening to an obscene song by saying, “If you listen to the words of that one, it’s pretty rough. But it has a real good beat. My daughter says she doesn’t pay any attention to the words anyway.” Are we really that naïve? What erroneous reasoning! Go along with the crowd – even if the crowd is on the way to suffering, misery, pain, extinction? Do we think that these songs have no part in the tidal wave of promiscuity, venereal disease, illegitimate babies that are all over the country today? If you are one of those who like today’s Naija music, you ought to honestly and truthfully ask yourself WHY.

Investment / #kogi2015 : Before The Battle Of Lugard House! by fako1(m): 12:31am On Jul 25, 2015
A friend posted this on his facebook page and needed to be shared to enlighten us (Nigerians) by not just focusing at the southern region for resources. NIGERIA is really blessed. Indeed a land of milk and honey.

READ:

Kogi state arguably has the largest solid minerals deposit in Nigeria but unfortunately, the state has been plagued with mediocre and lacklustre Governors with no vision and mission. Governors of Kogi state have neglected the solid
minerals in the past. Instead of Kogi indigenes to fall in love with malicious fabrication, empty promises and fake vows this time, they must QUICKLY make a right choice.
I hope they get it right this time. I also hope President Muhammadu Buhari will address the issue of the moribund Ajaokuta steel mill once and for all. That steel mill has the potential of making Nigeria an industrial giant Kogi state alone has deposits of a total of twenty-nine (29) mineral resources available in commercial quantities.

These include coal, dolomite, feldspar, bauxite, iron ore, tar, limestone, gold etc. Each of the 21 Local Government Areas in the state has deposits of at least 2 minerals.

One of the coal-rich areas is the Okaba district of Ankpa LGA, which alone holds reserves of 99 million tonnes of coal. As things stand, Kogi state alone has enough deposits of coal to supply all of Nigeria with electricity for four hundred (400) years. Kogi state holds enough
limestone to keep 3 giant-sized cement factories (with over 15million tons annual capacity) operational for an unbroken stretch of 99 years. Yet, with these potential money spinning resources, the state is starved of funds and is currently facing a cash crunch. Nigeria as a nation is passing through economic hardship as a result of fall in oil prices.

In economic development, mineral resources are the foundation upon which an industrialised economy is built, and industrialisation is essential if Nigeria is to reduce over-dependence on the oil industry – an industry which, despite the revenue it generates, provides employment for just 6 per cent of the Nigerian labour force.
I hope the next Governor of Kogi state develop solid minerals to cater for the needs of indigents and downtrodden people.
