okoroemeka: to further our knowledge about okra farming we decided to visit the legendary okra producing towns of awgu and odume in enugu state to learn more, but sadly there's nothing to learn at the numerous farms we went to,no good agricultural practice,no application of organic manure, zero crop rotation, poor spacing and the saddest part is that an agricultural town that produces so much okra doesn't have even one agrc extension agent to advice the farmers its a pity to see the depths of degradation at the numerous agric ministries in the state capitals, the staff are there with the wrong mindset, monthly salary.with just a little encouragement and prodding these farms I saw will increase production, from what I saw on the ground they are just producing crops at 20/30% efficiency. . what makes them legandry then? My okra were far better than that. But whiteflies destroyed them. |

okoroemeka: one plastic spoonful per crop, yes it was in agriculture I made the first mil,I drove a family friend for an agric expo in ibadan,we went to many farms and we came to Moor plantation research farm, the manager was looking for buyers for their pig weaners,I asked the price,he said #2000k each, hmmmm!after our return to east I asked myself how hard can it be,we have space were I can rear then,so I went back bought 100 weaners, paid #50k for transportation and after 6 months of management, one buyer came and cleared all @15k per one, total #1,5 million,so that's how I became a millionaire in year 2000. E . Super cool experience, thanks. One gud thing about pigs is their resilience against diseases. i just hope you will open a thread on piggery, esp the feeding aspect. |

Functionoftime: Cukes are normally spaced 60cm apart? . Yes, from the recommendation i see in Cu 999 pack. Closer spacing is also possible but avoid it during the rainy season because of disease issues. I also think that closer spacing is not good if there is heavy pest infestation, esp pests like whiteflies which are very difficult to control. |

Yampotatocarrot: This was exactly the same method I once used, as advised by @Okoroemeka. I dug a hole and buried the manure there.
However, I have a problem with it. Do u think the nutrient in the manure will be available for the veggies, if planting is done say two weeks after burying the manure?
I'm asking cos I've heard such nutrients are "gradually" released to plants, which takes time.
Lemme also ask this, @Farmtech, @Okoroemeka, @Vosquare and other cuke farmers, how many cukes do u think a land space that is a little below half plot can contain? This is my current farm size and I want to maximise it fully.
(I already have 100bags there, which I'm expecting to contain 200seeds.) . whether u bury the manure or not, the nutrient will be available even after 1yr, though rain will leach some nutrients. Burying prevents nitrogen loss in the form of ammonia gas. Also, it is good to combine manure with chemical fertilizers bc chem fertilizers meet plants' needs faster. Cukes are normally spaced 60cm apart if you stake. I don't know how well closer spacing will be. |

okoroemeka: if you are doing 1 acre and needs like 10 tons of manure, what type of bin do you think can contain 10 tons or how do you turn such quantities around, pls let's be practical and face realistic ideas that are feasible, how manure is composted on a large scale is by pouring it outside for the weather and time to complete the process, the system we use of soaking manure in water for some days before using is our own niche idea that works for us and speeds up the composting process,it's is only meant to be used by experienced farmers ,use it at your own risk. . For me, I just bury the manure in a furrow I make on the ridge. Then i plant after 2 weeks. |

DeLaRue: I personally stopped new cucumber planting a couple of weeks ago, but that's because September is the worst time for persistent rain in my area. I fear DM will be particularly problematic then. I have moved to cabbage for now.
However, it's a personal decision. If you're ready to battle DM, you don't have to stop planting. Start applying fungicide early and stick to a spraying rota religiously. This should help you to manage DM and lead to a fruitful harvest. Go back a few pages and read Mr Okoroemeka's spraying recommendation.
Finally, you should be selling the cucumbers your DM infested plants are producing. They're good to eat. Just make sure to pack only straight & perfectly formed ones as market women usually will not accept badly shaped cucumbers. In my experience, DM result in a lot of badly shaped cucumbers. . Pls, does cabbage like rain? How easy is it to grow? |

okoroemeka: if the nursery is done outdoors in this constant rain and damp conditions, yet to germinate after 12 days,I think the seeds has already rotten in the soil, from a good nursery you will see germination from 5 days and the whole process will finish in 7-10 days,in weather like this it's best to find container or old basin,do the nursery inside and keep it indoors were the temperature will be higher to speed up germination.if sun comes out it can be brought outside and if rain comes then it goes inside and you water it yourself. . I once had this problem during rainy season outdoors. I solved it by spraying an insecticide on the covered seeds and covering them with dry grass or palm frond. There are soil insects that attack seeds during germination and u'll notice some of them dead. That was for cheap pepper seeds. But for costly ones, I would rather do the nursery indoors to avoid story. |

okoroemeka: you could have saved yourself unnecessary stress by putting organic manure first before sowing, spraying chemicals on young plants is not always a good idea, you can still amend the nursery by using pig manure dissolved in water for at least 3 days and poured on the nursery, after that use knapsack filled with water to wash the seedlings leafs.i said pig manure for a reason,if you use chicken manure it may not end well. . I think this is risky. Because if a manure solution goes anaerobic, it will harm plants. I will suggest he make a furrow on 1 or 2 sides of the ridge, fill them with pig manure or well deconposed poultry manure and cover with soil. |

DeLaRue: In addition to what Mr Okoroemeka said:
1. rain gun will splash water all over the cucumber plant thus increasing the likelihood of disease.
2. drip tape uses between 80 - 90% less water compared to watering with rain gun.
3. during harmattan, from leaving the rain gun to landing on the soil, up to 20% of the water could be lost to evaporation.
Unless you absolutely have no choice, drip irrigation is superior to rain gun in cucumber farming. . Thanks. I was considering raingun because of whitefly problem. |

What size of raingun did u use? I usually thought that breaker that ''slaps' the water repeatedly will effectively break the droplet size. |

The state of the nation's economy give birth to the high rate of robbery and kidnapping we are having today. How ignorant is " Sexual immorality comes with a full package of rape, cultism, arm robbery, kidbapping etc."? How can the economy be gud when it is being handled by ungodly people? Bbnaija will indirectly give birth to rapists and criminals. People cant see it that way because of the indirect effect. That is why govts will waste time and money tackling insecurity while ignoring those things that leads to insecurity.
