zibe: Hi Guys, I would be moving to the UK on a tier 2 work visa by next week. I have been given bank options by my employer but not sure about which bank would be better for a salary account? The options are below
HSBC Natwest Lloyds Bank Barclays HBOS
Please can someone help with which would be best to bank with? especially when it comes to charges and interest on savings/invetsments.
Thank you Congratulations, all of them are basically the same, though halifax is good because of future mortgage and all. I will suggest HSBC because they have a current account for new start that gives you 1k overdraft and CC with 1500limit and I believe with your employers influence you should get this. This will help you build your credit history easily and early. |

DisGuy: In any given population, what percentage of the people have what is considered a good job/health insurance?
And why do this group people not care about the rest? Seems there's this "as long as I'm okay" sod the rest mentality!
Been hearing about NHS sustainability for a long time. Come what may the UK will never go they way of U.S system at most it will modify some with the Scandinavian countries
PS there's private healthcare in the UK as well if you want air conditioned ambulance and lavatory Bad mentality affecting us all |

Rubyventures: I think it is selfish to want the health care system in US to be introduced here, its seems that for some people as long as they and their families can afford something the rest people can go to hell.
What about those people who cannot afford it? those that were born with ailments and will never get insurance? Healthcare for all is the best way to go not just for a few.
I remember a few years back, when I was on holiday in the states and my kid fell and hurt himself, we called an ambulance and were told that if they had to take us to the hospital it will cost $500 and it would be better to drive down ourselves which we did. The hospital service we received was superb. There wasn't any body waiting, we were seen by the doctor immediately , we had 3 nurses and a doctor attending to us. before this I had to pay $3,000 on my Credit card. ( this I later claimed back from my travel insurance). After getting back to the UK there was a further bill of about $700, my insurance took care of this. Just for a few stitches on a wound. Even the hotel had the cheek to charge for the 911 call?
There are Americans who come to the UK for treatment, the system in America ignores the vulnerable and the poor and that's not right.
In my opinion the NHS is one of the best health care systems in the world. If one isn't even careful they can keep sending u unending bills. |

Babyvet: You should be grateful, this country is one of the few developed countries that allow outsiders to come here and give birth and the baby gets automatic citizenship. Many people are spending more that amount to get green card in the country. It's not about being grateful or not and also we are all rendering services to each other. I am pretty sure the income generated from self pay patient do cover up because why will a bill of 32,000 be reduced to 5,000 if not that some upcoding has been done at one point or the other. |

wonlasewonimi: My sister had a baby in the US and she was billed like 15k usd... If not for her insurance, she would have coughed out that much. Whereas, you walk in to NHS, and carry your baby out;the midwives would even be begging to rate their services. I know which I will pick! Even self pay patient pay as much as 6,000 to 7,000 dollars if not more. I remember the hospital I had my son in Texas asking for 800 dollars to perform circumcision and will pay doctor fees too which will be 200dollars. I carry baby come do it naija sharpsharp. |

Heritagee: Good day everyone and happy weekend Please I need your candid advice on this issue. I'm a tier 2 applicant awaiting decision. I'm married with a son though my husband is not relocating with us. I will go alone and bring my child over when I'm fully settled. My problem now is I got to know I was pregnant when I went for TB test. I had secondary infertility for about two years. My questions now are 1. My recruitment agency is aware of the pregnancy through the TB test report, am I expected to inform my employer? If yes, how soon? 2. Does NHS cover childbirth cost and postnatal care? 3. I'm hoping to resume for work in the early weeks of September. I'm due to deliver around March next year. How soon can I invite my mum over? 4. How feasible is if for a woman to care for 2 children all alone in the UK? I'll be going to Coleraine in Northern Ireland
Thank you in anticipation as I await your prompt responses and guidance 1. I believe your recruitment agency should do that for you but confirm from them as well to be on the safe side and check your contract. 2. Yes it covers all and you are entitled to dental care too whilst pregnant. 3. You can invite your mum over once you are settled in and all. No hard or fast rule to this. 4. It is doable but tough if you are only one as a new migrant and family support is key but if your mum will be coming over, you should be fine. All the best |

bellong: @Fatima04,
It is a tough call but the only way to find out is to get in touch with VETASSES.
I am not sure if they still do their advisory service. If they still do, do that first. Really a tough one boss, They still do document checking service so may go for that. Thanks |

Hello house, please has anyone assessed as a mathematician, actuary or statistician?
Please help assess this situation? The current JD suits that of a mathematician and actuary (since they are almost the same thing). The person has got Bsc in mathematics from a Tier 1 uni and to get a positive assessment from VETASSeS for actuary, they can consider this based on relevant skilled employment which she has.
The issue is mathematician is on STSOL while Actuary is MLTSSL and therefore open to more state nomination and 189.
The question is if the person nominates Mathematician she is limited to Victoria,Tasmania and NT and getting the POF stated is difficult, any suggestions on how to go about this?
If she nominates actuary it's more open to NSW and the likes but stands a risk of negative assessment.
Hence the dilemma. Just need advise from more experienced people on how to go about making a better choice.
Thank you. |

Lexusgs430: An NHS bed would cost you £600 per night. That is just a night stay, imagine an admission in HDU, ITU etc etc..... Cost of A & E admission is about £124, a trip by ambulance is £200.00........ Now imagine all this costs combined with all the medical interventions and professionalism ......
Now get admitted for 3 weeks, you would easily see how the cost mounts up........ But now imagine not paying a dime at the point of use ? Absolutely agree. That is one of the great advantages of the UK over US. Having access to everything without paying anything. The fear or thought of having an emergency and calling an ambulance cripples people alot in the US |

Inkredible: This TV licence issue came up at the very best time.
I got gifted 2 TVs yesterday. I recently moved house and I haven't gotten any letters from the TV guys to pay or anything.
My question is, should I seek them out and pay or just wait for the letter?
Ps: I have no problems paying for the money. I like my peace of mind.
Cc: Lexus430, Davechappelle, RalphLauren et al. Depends on what you will be using, If you will be subscribed to box TV and recording programmes, you have to pay. That reminds me of one naija house I went to visit, immediately I knocked, I could hear the kids screaming and running TV license people are here mummy and did not open the door oo until there mum came down. I was impressed by there level of cooperation but also thought if that is a good thing to imbibe in or portray to kids? It could have an overall effect when they start flouting rules and disobeying orders blatantly but who knows I could be overthinking it. |

Aphrodite007: Thanks Fati. So it’s not not good to pay direct debit for bills? Is it better to pay via phone then? Isn’t that risky giving them your card details? Direct debit is fine for utilities but doesn't mean it necessarily contributes to ur Credit score |

Aphrodite007: Wait direct debit doesn’t build credit history? So paying back what I owe on my credit card through direct debit won’t imorove my credit history? I’m sorry I missed the gist, how am I meant to build my history.. I am sure he meant direct debit for bills not CC if you pay that on time I believe ur history is being built with that. All the best in your test. |

DaveChapelle: Use a 5-star reviewed Driving school/instructor, and i hate to be racist, but avoid Pakistani teachers or Asian teachers...in my experience they treat Nigerians like they're punishing us for our bad behaviour or like ATM machine or like we're stupid, except if the Asian instructor is 5-star reviewed....and if he has 1 star and self-reviewed himself with 5-star...definitely avoid!
I heard AA is highly recommended Reviews is very important in choosing a school and I chose one based on that, however my teacher is pakistani and quite good, patient and understanding and doesn't smack my leg at all like one did for me in naija. So basically research on good schools around before settling |

God willing, I passed my theory today. Thanks to everyone who contributed tips.
To the next stage, how much does the practice test cost and how soon can it be taken?
Ps: for anyone who cares to know how I did it. I downloaded the free apps and left them on my phone. Fiddled with it few minutes whenever I felt like. Then bought the full app a day to the exam and binge studied till late in the night. Fell asleep, woke up and continued till I got to the exam center.
Oh, I moved house 2 days to the exam. Point? It's an easy exam. Thanks to fatima04 et al.
Cheers!! Congratulations bro. Now go ace the driving test. Check reviews before settling for any driving school |

Ralphlauren: you've not been resident in the UK for long, so lenders will access you as being too risky for credit facilities.
do you have a current account? if yes, use the account well (make sure its regularly funded with your salary payments/decent sums) for at least 6 months and then approach your bank for an overdraft of £200 -£300 (preferably in branch - ask to speak to a Relationship manager). use the overdraft every now and then. this is another easy way of building your credit history.
it is easier to obtain an overdraft than a credit card
building one's credit history/file takes time and patience and sometimes careful planning.
direct debit does not help build your credit history. Thank you for your explanation the patient dog gets d fattest Credit Card . Though still surprised HSBC gave hubby both overdraft and CC as a newbie back then maybe he was just lucky then |

jayooh: Wow, I just checked to see the results of the last invitation draw held 11th July, O'boy ITA go hard without 75points oh. 70 pointers invited had a "Date of effect" 5 months old. If you're just starting to select an occupation please gun for one with options to 190 and 489. This SM program is getting tougher.
I believe more people will be pushed towards 489 this program year, perhaps, the ultimate motive of DHA. But I think invite increased by 500 because it was 610 per round before but now 1010,so could be a good sign, Engineers even need as high as 80 now #sigh |

iamblisz: Sir bellong, I was able to read through the link u posted in page 0, instead of being a GMPC as someone said in page 7. But I'm worried because I don't have any documents showing"suitable skill assessment. I have a b.tech quantity, Age 28 Graduated 2016 I only have one year working experience which is nysc, and work experience has nothing to do with my degree. I checked my skill if available using this link https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2018L00299 and it was listed there. Lastly I noticed that the test taken is IELTs , is TOEFL not used. I appreciate it if u answer me because the last thread has 600 pages and I was still in year 2016 alot of things might have changed before now. Thanks Look for qsmuyiwa post on what he did for a successful assessment with AIQS, that should help |

This is one of the times I wished I had sorted out this driving license thingy. Fatima04 sis I'm booked for theory test in a week's time o. You dropped some tips before but I can't find the page it was on again. If you don't mind, a brother needs all the tips he can get. I no wan go and come back again for am. Everyone is welcomed to chip in ideas. Thanks and cheers. Just download the theory 4 in 1 app and study all the questions well and understand why you miss or get some answers. For the theory part read questions well and answers and the correct answer will jump at you. Practise the hazard perception well and don't be quick to tap. All the best bro. |

Yinkzy03: Thanks a lot @fatima04,i will kick start the process as said in 1&2 above asap.
I honestly don't want to go through the route of using a Nigerian Drivers Licence, i don't want want to make a mistake of driving at the opposite direction and risk a jail term, lol and not to talk of the bad driving habits i had picked up over the years.
I am yet to sort out accommodation as we are still with family at the moment but i'm hoping i should be able to do the NI & Provisional Drivers License without having to show utility bill/rent receipt in my name (correct me if i'm wrong pls).
Many thanks. Not too sure for NI but for driving license it's good it's your final/personal home because that's what will be on your license when issued and also when you change house you must always update DVLA about that. Also for the NI, I think a form will be sent for you to fill first and then you send back so if it's not your permanent abode maybe quite difficult ***not too sure about this All in all I will advise sorting out the house first because it will be very key in getting you sorted for a lot of things |

Yinkzy03: Good afternoon guys,
Landed in the UK safely and picked up our BRP already, thanks to you all for your help. Well appreciated. I'm back again for questions o abeg...
1. What is the process of applying for NI? 2. What is the process of applying for Provisional Drivers License, need to speed this up before winter is here... 3. What are the other important things i need to do pls.
Your answers will go a long way..
Many thanks for your usual help Welcome. 1. Call this number 0800 141 2075 and follow the process from there and also as mentioned in earlier post be careful of answer given to "where was your visa issued?" Answer is Nigeria and BRP was just picked in the UK. A friend got called in to verify his details for this and further delayed the processing 2. You can apply for prov license on gov.uk. Appt booking, theory test and all those things will determine if it will be sorted before winter but if you have a Nigerian license you should be able to drive for a yr on that. You can read up on this on the gov.uk website and also suggest learning to drive before embarking on UK roads and if possible get the theory test done as this will help with understanding dre road rules and regulation. Hope you have sorted out your accommodation because for a lot of this processes *proof of residence* Is key. |
