Ticha:

Pick your battles. At 16, he can move out with state help into his own place so that's not far off and you want to avoid him drawing his own battle lines at all costs. Naija style unilateral parenting does not work well here at all.

I would have a discussion with him and
1. Tell him your worries and why they are valid worries - please don't use statements like I'm your parent and know better.
2. Ask him how he will mitigate those worries - agree with him what will work or not work ie he can go 3 days a week (Thu/ Fri/ Sat), establish a curfew, he has to tell you before leaving and give a reasonable time for returning - ie if he says 6pm then he should be home latest 6.15pm or message you that he will be late
3. I'd get him a part time job (at 14 he can work upto 10 hours a week) - that will use up either all his Sat or Sun for one shift.
4. Establish boundaries - healthy ones and not unilateral ones. You want to know his friends, repercussions for breaking trust etc. Establish some hard boundaries - ie a definite no go such as must not sleep outside the house without your full agreement, must not skip school etc
5. Avoid fire and brimstones and threats

Lastly, breathe, you got this!

Good advise and post allround. Thanks for always taking the time out to articulate your points.

@mamatukwas thank you for this thread oo finally caught up on all pages

Na wa for the gbasgbos going on oo, reading and reading for days.

It is interesting how some think skilled worker applicants are somehow better than student visa applicant.

The absolute truth is the income from international students and their dependant has ripple effects on the economy.

Unis like hull, Sunderland etc could have sacked staffs due to redundancy and alll. But see how education sector is all booming and including that of UKVI.
Add IHS/NI/tax etc, its simple mathematics

would you be schooling? i'd rather tell where to find accomodation than where to avoid. but off the top of my head for places to avoid is small heath, Mosely, handsworth wood. this is just personal opinion others might have a different answer

iThese are areas i'm personally familiar with so i can say they're alright, and transport link to city center colleges is always available

100% agree with Small Heath, wow that place shock me. Even my kid had to say mummy this road stinks where are we grin grin whilst walking through there. Its like one is back at Eko or oshodi market

Honestly you are right but the situation is not the same for people on student Visa especially if you have debts you are settling back home and also considering the post study option. I wish a thread can be created for people on the student route in the UK so that people coming on this route can learn from the mistake of others and be mentally prepared before coming in.

I believe you can use this existing thread

Hi Fatima,
Good morning. I wish I can reach you at this moment.
I want your advise.... contemplating moving my wife and daughter to the UK soon on a work visa. But I want to know how she can cope with work and a 2 year old daughter. Are creche expensive over to there?
Pls reply

So many factors will impact how she cope with work and family e.g location, type of job/working hours, salary level, presence of family etc. Its not impossible for a woman to cope with a 2yr old whilst working but something will have to be sacrificed as well and will be dependent on the answer to some of the questions above.

Prices for Creche which is also known as Nursery in the UK varies and largely dependant on location. I know people living outside London paying £1200 pcm before the economic crisis while I was paying circa £700.

Hello. Are there people living in Leicester here? How is the town? Is there accessible naija foodstuff?

Not living there but got lots of people over. The town is cool and the Nigerian community keeps growing everyday and sure you will enjoy the place. If coming as a student, be ready to pay at least 3 months rent in advance because the houses are more competitive than other places

When I talk say Nigerians and their communities are best dealt with in very small doses, people no go understand.
When I first come this country, my madam don already go put hand for Naija community for Manchy. I can live with Nigerians and their faking and forming (the number of strange approximations of British accents person hear dey wonderful), but when they come up with their so-called advice giving, na there I leave them. When I moved to Edinburgh, I select them carefully. The all-knowing crew: "Why you go buy manual moto, e dey pain for leg o" or "You for put those tickets for your credit card, credit card dey help for this country o" (as if person no sabi how much person get for pocket), I just avoid. No more Naija community for us, na one one.

Lol @ accent approximations. But really how do we really discern genuine advise from judgmental advise. I think the preconception/unconscious bias that they are judging you, already taints the advise they may or may not be given innocently in the event that you didn't know.

One may possibly receive it better from other races with the notion that "they are better" at sharing information.

My wife was studying at Kadpoly at that time, she stayed with her Uncle off campus........

I was accused of all sorts, kidnapping, getting her pregnant etc etc etc

Kaduna is a small town, our secret marriage was a major scandal within the Yoruba community, my oga was also accused of all sorts .......

Her parents stayed in Ibadan, the news spread like wildfire...... Considering the fact that prior to this secret marriage, I had never spoken to my in-laws, nor meet them.......

I had to call my in-laws, apologized to them, clearly stated my position/intentions and why we had to conduct the marriage etc etc ......

Silver jubilee is around the corner...... I have never reported her to parents, they have never intervened in our union, likewise my wife ...... We are buddies, just like biological siblings...... People might deem it an exaggeration, but we have never had an argument or raised voices....... We might have one in the future, which I seriously doubt ........

This one is interesting.
I usually see UK residents for past 3/5 years, etc. for this sort of job.
Except where it has to do with national security, that's the sort of thing where you see UK citizens only.
If this is an ordinary document controller position, then the stipulation for UK citizenship appears really strange to me.

Unless its MI5 or GCHQ and they're not saying.

Yes the job role doesn't match but then maybe it's the company.

In a related scenario where a job advert on LinkedIn specifically states British passport holder, can that be classed as discrimination.

A colleague saw the attached advert and was really displeased but I wasn't surprised since I encountered quite a bit of that during my job search and they all claimed its due to Security Clearance for the jobs.

With her reaction, it now got me thinking if it's passive discrimination but I am just used to it hence my not seeing a big deal to it.

On the other hand stating it publicly saves the recruiter and applicant precious time.

No, I used a debit card! I even approved the payment on my bank app and they held the money for a while. Anyway my family members here have told me to file a formal complaint on email to them as it goes against consumer rights.

This is a good course of action as they have the right to either offer a service or not but at the same time going through your SM profile to me seems a bit off. Its just an overzealous staff.

John Lewis will have a complaints section which you should ideally go to in the first place before consumer rights protection group.

Viruses:
My wife wanted to buy iPhone 11 from Facebook market place but was scammed. The person blocked her after sending £450. The prior arrangement was to get it delivered. Going forward is pick-up and pay.

I'm chatting the person as a buying, and he/she is wanting to sell the same phone for me.

The recipient's bank is Modulr FS Ltd. I don't even know what kind of bank that is.

Wow, FB marketplace and other online apps like that isn't safe for buying things before you receive the goods. Always pay on delivery. So sorry for your loss, first of all, how did you make the payment? If its through a debit card, you may not get it back, but call your bank and report it as fraud. They will let you know the next steps.

The Modulr FS is either Monzo or Revolut I think. Hopefully you get it sorted and get the funds back.
