Best thing is not to shout about your good news and just keep calm because sharing it in d first place is inviting unnecessary financial responsibilities

My GF thinks i'm too cheap and unsophisticated for buying my cheap banger, and i have been caressing the idea of buying the newer cheaper model...I somehow realised some websites offer to sell your car off, as fast as in 24hrs!...Are they any good? Anybody?

Advise needed from the veterans oo

I need advise on how work environments, things to expect, how to act so as not to be overwhelmed or misbehave in an oyinbo setting.

Feeling of excitement and fear of the unknown and this is totally a different sector and world than I am used to.

Thanks.

P.s dose yeye recruiters are now calling me and sending emails up and down. Like they can sense levels has changed smiley smiley.

Morale of my epistle

1. Never give up because when you do that's when all hope will be lost.

2. Put God in all you do.

3. Follow up as much as you can, your job is in that plenty lot of impossibilities

4. Also make sure ur CV and cover letters are up to standard and constantly edit and review

5. Always focus your past experience on the expected job role and responsibilities

If anyone needs interview etiquette and questions, I have got some good ones I did not see on google

Then the wait began after the interview, as per daily work is to apply for a job na smileyna so I applied for another trainee Qty surveying role oo, meant for apprentice and fresh graduate sometimes (any way na way), wrote an epistle on why I want the job, then moved to phone interview where I said I was keen and eager to learn new things all over again and won't mind the role at all and then I was invited for the last stage (assessment centre) And I had 3weeks to prepare for presentation and all, so i focused on dt.

Suddenly the call came from Arup oo, only for them to tell me I did so well but my experience doesn't match bla bla bla. Chai all.hopes and dreams dashed. I was saddened.

Then the recruiter of my previous application of over a month just called me that the company is interested in meeting me for an interview and gave me 2 days notice, in my mind I was like another time waster and just told her there was no where I could put my kid on such a short notice that if they can arrange it for a more convenient time I don't mind and voila she was able to reschedule for a week after insisting they wanted to meet all candidate that same day.

Another preparation of defending stories and I went for the interview as scheduled, talked and talked and after 20 to 30mins it ended. In my mind I was like they already had there candidate and just wasted my time because I was used to 1hr or more interview and the interviewer did not even stress me.

Na so I receive a call like the next morning to be offered the job oo and the lady was like we were so impressed by you and your qualifications and will even increase my salary expectation because of my Msc degree.

It all felt soooooo unbelievable till I saw the contract and all welcome emails like ......God is good. Infact I am still waiting to be pinched back to reality

Continued

I started applying for graduate jobs due to my recent UK masters (did it via DL before I even knew we would come here at all) and does ones were filled with more online SHL testing and complex application. I kept applying and hoping. Infact i became obsessed, more because I have a family member who told me outrightly I won't get a job in my profession most likely will become an housewife for few years cos of cost of childcare and how UK isn't favourable and so many scary things.

Then I decided to do support worker job because of desperation of I sha want to work, hubby was not happy but sha supported whatever i decided. Luckily after applying, doing some online tests and assessment centre I got 2 offer for support work and I settled for one, it looked easy because I was to work with just one individual and it will be 2 staffs to 1 patient.

So I started d verification process which could take couple of weeks and all and I decided to use the opportunity to intensify my effort, amidst all my frantic calls was one recruiter that seems open enough to my Nigerian experience and just asked me a few questions and told me the company's name and sent me the personal company questionnaire to fill and how they should call me for interview shortly and suddenly she stopped contacting me just like the many hopes and promises of others.

Some told me outrightly they couldn't help me because of my foreign experience so I gave up on recruiters.

Then suddenly I got a call from a big company (Arup) And in my mind I said WOW this is it, prepared for the interview like anything and dazzled them oo grin grin

P.S no one should be discouraged about the bolded especially when you are here on a legal basis

Part 1 of the search

Immediately we settled in I applied to job boards, contacted some people for directions and how to go about it, I was so hungry and determined to be successful but mehn, I did not even get any call or anything, it was disappointing but soon after I get dejected I carry laptop again and browse for different information, look through old contact to see who can help then contacted duppyshoo (God bless you mama) who helped review my CV and tweaked it a bit and also sent some more options which led me to more job boards.

After then somethings changed some recruiters started contacting me but still was not enough, then one day I just decided to start visiting the recruiters website individually on all post I was interested in, apply through there website and then go ahead and contact the person in charge of the role and follow up with emails and all, infact I started stalking some recruiters on LinkedIn, and still that did not yield much result.

In between I applied for tesco store assistant job oo, went for the interview after passing the online interview and of course was not giving the job but it exposed me to competency based interview and group interview which really helped me afterwards. Also did a lot of online test for Morrisons, Lidl and co

Fatima04,
How far?Did you finally move scot?

Mamatukwas how's it going?

@all
We are moving down south in a few months!! So scared and excited! I love this place but we have to go with the cheese.I hear things are more expensive especially in the KSS area but we will be fine..fingers crossed.

Still haven't bought the house because of this move. The houses i'm seeing around the area are from 5-6 huns for 4 bed grin grin grin grin I pity myself.

Have learnt from old mistakes, have very good credit history, using the credit card for payments and always pay back etc etc.

Since it's a new area we've never been to,we plan to rent first and then buy in 3-6 months.
Did not move to Scotland oo, settled for the midlands and its been good so far.

Moving is another thing I dread in this country o. All the update and all.

Take it easy on ursef oo, why the change dough. U sounded very settled kids and all up north

That’s it @ bolded.

Buying a new car is quite a popular choice for many (both migrants and non-migrants), so I am surprised someone is taking offence with my suggestion.

Honestly, if you can afford it go for brand new. Do your search. It is not as expensive as people tend to perceive. Some manufacturers offer 0% interest and even pay a contribution towards the deposit.

With a new car, you pay no road tax for the first year, no MOT payments for three years, some manufacturers even throw in free annual motor servicing.
True another side of d conversation I never thought of.
Basically all depends on individual and stage of finances, don't worry me can still drive tokunbo even 2 owners car sef.

U r my role model sha

I think everyone on here has contributed well from their own experiences, giving invaluable advice.

Every opinion should be welcomed,it's left for the reader to take the one they like and discard the rest.

The beauty of this thread is the varied economic strata represented and that is the reality of life, some are rich, some middle, some poor.

I'm always interested in reading especially from those more well off than me so i can double my hustle if possible & learn from them.

Many have invested well, many know about financial markets etc

My own is to be inspired as the only way for me and my family is up!

@madamekofo welcome to the thread oo for work I will suggest still searching for something u have practised in and existing qualifications while u get the UK experience and probably money if u need it.

Getting all this trainee roles can take a while and most times it's targeted at recent graduate or current student

As for selling things, Amazon is still ur best bet and u can shop for things online and in store at reduced price and sell on Amazon, you can even try african stuffs if u can dabble into that.

But then all u Amazon pple dey kill people's business case in point is this house of Fraser store closing more dan half of there stores

@killingmesoftly truth is everything is in stages with what you have decided to do and since you made up your mind to stay back you have to face the harsh reality.

Focus on raising those kids because getting a job and studying right now with your status is near impossible and immigration is very fluid in all this developing countries so planning 3k income ahead is not necessary and no point to it because there are toooooooo many uncertain variable in your equations.

And also hope you know cost of childcare is expensive for one kid not to mention 3 so eventually working may not be worth it.

All the best in your chosen path

Theory test experience.

I guess i will be part of d small percentage that fails theory on there first attempt sad sad It was sooooo annoying because I had 42/50 and 55 in the hazard part, more annoying because i remembered the 1 question I missed that would have made the difference.

I had to wait 2weeks before i could write again which was frustrating but also gave me the opportunity to change my straregy. I guess practising for so long gave me a false sense of security and that affected my outlook on the first attempt.

Strategy for the second attempt was to wait like 4 days to the test, then started practising again and made sure I patiently assessed all options before choosing answers and aimed at 100%in practise. Then did a crash reading on the highway code to see what I could have missed and surprisingly I gained new information.

While booking I was lucky to get morning session for a date not so far off against the afternoon I used d first time so that I will feel psychologically fresh grin grin

During the test I painstakingly read all questions before answering, flagged some I wasn't sure of, reviewed them individually at the end and also reviewed all the questions all over again just to make sure I did not rush and after all I had plenty minutes.

I did not really practise for the hazard part again because I knew it was my strength. Final test scores proved it all worked because I got 48/50 and 65/75.

Suggestions
1. Read questions and answers carefully to spot the key words
2. Ensure you are over 90% in practise and review the highway code in details
3. The theory 4 in 1 really helps and it's cheaper than the DVSA app and it's got everything one needs to ACE it on first attempt

@mamatukwas I hope this helps you to smash it on your first attempt as well. All the best.

All in all the app is d same as d exam but take care to read questions carefully and options as well

Thanks for your reply. Will go for the priority and pray very hard. Can't afford to waste anymore money so I hope it works. My main concern was the statement on TLS website that advised those with a history of refusal not to try priority. I will try it and it comes out fast. The earlier I start work the faster I can recoup all the money spent. Thanks again.
Just pray and make sure you get your documents all right, Tier 2 is relatively easy so be rest assured and you can write a simple cover letter in the additional statement to allay ur fears but it's really not necessary just be calm and it will end well I understand d whole monetary aspect, hence why I advise the NARIC route for tier 2 it's currently cheaper and at least u feel good about using it certificate in lieu of d English requirement
