Not a structural engineer, just mentioning what I observed. I merely happened to stumble upon that site a few hours earlier and felt that since it was relevant to the discussion at hand and I happened to have sometime to spare I decided to share.

I also noticed that the wood used was very different from what obtains in local wood markets, it was very clearly foreign wood.
I have seen some foreign building practices that are different from those in Nigeria.

I have also had discussions with those who work with foreign construction firms/foreign trained structural engineers, and these have come up.

Example of another is the way corner blocks are laid. Some builders lay two full corner piece blocks in the L format, others will use a saw to create perfect angles (45 degrees) for the corner blockwork from the two blocks.

Some will build blocks that can be thrown from a truck to the ground without breaking, others will build with blocks that cannot withstand such an impact.

Hope you found the answers you wanted.

Visited a Julius Berger construction site where I saw 4 by 4 and 2 by 4 being used as nogging.

I noticed the use of screw guns and screws which is very rare here.

the row just on top of the concrete structure was made up of 4 by 4s.

SOLAR POWERED OUTDOOR SET-UP

Do you know you can power your outdoor security and lighting for "free" with a one-off purchase of solar powered devices? Here are some solar outdoor systems ideas for your project.
Thanks for sharing.

I will look up these from US as I am not aware of a way to ship them from the UK to Nigeria that is as cheap as shipping them from the US.

Very relevant since power utility rate is going up and will go up even more.

The position of government and the power industry is that payment is less than cost of producing electricity.

Apart from ACs, freezers and fridges, security lighting is another major cost of running a home.

While other countries in the developed world do wonders with lighting, we do just the very basics of providing electricity for the most basic of lighting due to the perception that electricity is too expensive.

It even seems these devices are far cheaper than the prices I have seen in the Nigerian market.

For the records, I have asked the vendor to show good faith, I have asked him to make partial payments if he is unable to make payment in full, I have also asked him to consult a lawyer.

Check those words against my moniker. The relevant posts will appear

I have said before actions and inactions can create legal obligations. That A doesn't realize this doesn't mean that B will not. That C does not take action doesn't mean D will not take action to enforce his or her rights.

What I will not do is post the above everytime the vendor posts, I will not engage in such collective action, my license to practice is too important to join those who know no better to do what is patently wrong.

I came from a background in which words are currency, so I pick and choose my words very carefully.

I insist that the words "mob action" apply to the matter at hand. Every word or phrase has several meanings and I have clarified that the meaning under American law which makes it a crime is not my meaning, I used it in it's plain literal meaning and not legal meaning.

If there is any legal meaning attached under Nigerian Law, then the appropriate word is "cyber bullying" and there have been cases in that regard that you can look up to see if they don't apply.
PropertiesRe: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by FEGEITOK:
It doesn't matter whether the bullying is from the side of the vendor or the client.

I deal with principles, either way the same principles apply, it is wrong.

Once you determine a principle in law, all you need to do next is to find fact pattern matches.

issue #1: a vendor is owing a client

issue #2: the client asked the vendor to pay

issue#3: the vendor is either unable to pay or is refusing to pay

issue#4: the client said the vendor will have no peace until the vendor pays

issue#5: the client has sympathizers that insist that acting in concert with the client they will ensure the vendor has no peace until he pays the client

issue#6: ever since the public statements to the above above, see issue#5, whenever the vendor posts, the client and sympathetic monikers always post disclaimers, innuendoes, etc?

What is wrong then with calling the coordinated actions of the client and the sympathetic monikers mob action? online mobbing? cyber bullying?

Is it impossible to discuss the action by itself (the actus reus) without the motive (mens rea)?

I said it from the get-go, that I am not concerned with the state of the mind of the posters but the actions of the posters.

The actions of the posters constitute mob action against the vendor, one or more of them have made posts to that effect in the past.

Don't just have the time to dig those posts out.

It is what is it, unpalatable as it maybe.

Even in the courts, the judges will take a look at both the actions and the state of mind individually and separately before attempting to make inferences from considering both together.

End of discussion

I come from a long line of lawyers on both sides of the family, so forgive me for seeing things legally and not just morally.

That said, I hope and pray the vendor resolves the contractual dispute with the client ASAP, I said that much in the past, that is my position today.

But two wrongs do not make a right, and it is my duty to spot the wrong when I see it

It is not always what is said it is also the implications of what is done.

If a third party sees a gang of motor park touts appear around a vehicle driven by a non-member of the park to force him away for stopping to pick a passenger in front of their park does it matter that there was no prearrangement?

Didn't they gather together to achieve the same purpose at the same time and the same place?

I never used mob action in the meaning under US law.

Mob action is when a group of people come together to enforce their own version of right over another.

If it happens online it can be called an online mob or cyber bullying.

Check cyber bullying under Nigerian Law.

*EDITED to fix typos
PropertiesRe: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by FEGEITOK:
It is not one person but the actions of all accounts who post immediately after the vendor who is owing a client that constitutes mob action.

I repeat the actions as a collective.

That includes the harassment and intimidation meted out to other vendors who those monikers are assumed to have a soft spot for the vendor in question.

Pray tell which law backed the action of hounding a vendor and forcing him to make comments in support of your cause, going to his page to make derisory comments.

What's the difference between that and the mob action by those who believe in homosexuality against anyone who believes the opposite.

A mob is a group not one person.

The actions of all those monikers in concert is the issue.

I don't care about your cause whether it is right or wrong.

All I care is to call it by its name.

That does not take away from the fact that there is a debt that should be paid.

Separate emotions from issues and you will appreciate my angle.

Whether it is mob action, online mob, or flash mob (afterall all those monikers come out in a flash as soon as the said vendor posts) , it all qualifies as cyber bullying by the said monikers.

That's why I provided examples in the pasted links and pictures extract the principles ignore the parties there is no difference.

It is extra legal aka jungle justice

You made a claim that posts are some sort of mob action, then flash mob, now online mobbing . Which is it?

Maybe you should do more research on the claims you make.

Again I ask how is posting caveat emptor and reviews from a fraudster builder mobbing or whatever new term you come up with?

huh huh huh

Nice try.
I was not sure you were referring to my posts, but now that it is confirmed,

Yes. You did pass judgement. You called it mob action.

1.You described the posts as "mob action" not "flash mob".
I am sure you know they are 2 different things and mob action is a criminal offence. Also my posts are not "flash mob" like you claim . Read the definition again

2. I have never called for the silencing of any member of this forum. This is an open forum and I always encourage discussion.
If the fraudster builder want to continue to advertise here, other forum members have the right to make his record clear for new members.

The client reviews and testimonies speak for themselves

3. I believe if someone has

a Questionable ethical behavior,
b. Not a professional but claims to be one.
c Insults and abuses clients
d. Publishes clients private information in a public forum
e. Has SEVERAL CREDIBLE CLAIMS of theft, diversion of funds, financial misappropriation against them
f. Colluded and attempted to collude with insiders/family members to defraud a client
g. Other dubious conduct too numerous to name

I will give such a person a very wide berth That is just my opinion

IMO giving any sense of credibility to the resident fraudster does a disservice to the purpose of this thread and the newcomers who may be ensnared.

...maybe I have a different way of seeing things
For anyone wondering if the actions described constitute online mobbing aka mob action, here is some reading for you and some questions as well:

1. What is a mob?

2. Is one person or mob or is a mob a collection of people?

3. What does a mob do?

4. Can mob action be offline only? If no

5. Can mob action be online?

6. What drives mob action?

7. Do mob actions necessarily follow established legal rules for problem resolutions? If no

8. Is it not true that mobs have a mind of their own and that in the pursuit of such objectives they may inadvertently cross legal red lines?

9. Can mob action result in good or bad?

10. Does the end always justify the means?

You will understand my position if and when someone successfully brings an action on harassment, that actions have consequences.

I will not repeat my position on the contractual dispute, it was stated previously and I have no reason to restate, that said, I just wanted to point it what is happening for what it is.

It is no different from what the local government thugs or motor park thugs do.

The only difference is that is online.

So if I was an enterprising criminal and I figured out vulnerabilities in high net worth peoples home automation I could use the opportunity to set up a seamless home invasion. No breaking of anything. Just enter grab the owner and have him initiate transfers at gunpoint.
When the target is high value enough, then no price is too much to pay to gain access.

Is it not true that some car thieves in Nigeria have signal jammers? The police have even made public statements to that effect.

I am happy that you have bridged the gap between what I said was possible and how it could be applied in real life to compromise security.

How do people get in? Usually through someone or something trusted.

One of the methods of attack is to learn of your wireless Access Point name, then clone it and make the signal so strong that it forces your devices tó connect to the AP with the highest signal strength. Then they grab everything it broadcasts and gain valuable intelligence, If you don't monitor would you know that such an attack is going on?

All this can be done from outside in a nearby vehicle without accessing the property

Like I said the value of the target determines the cost of protection.

Enough said.

Cause I really don't like to engage in long winded arguments.

I have dropped enough information for anyone who needs to take action to do so.

We can agree that wireless can be made safe. End users shouldn’t just go home, plunk it on the network and start surfing.

Anyone that’s going into home automation I’ll assume will encounter security configurations, even DIY.
Don't leave it to the vendor or installer to keep your network secure.

Change all default passwords as soon as they are gone.

I can go on and on.... But that's a good start.

If one can access your home automation network, he will try to get into your computers, etc.

Thanks.
Good that you shared, I wanted to share a resource on the same issue from SANS.

You spared me the trouble.

Tools like the Wifi Pineapple from Hak5, Tamosoft software, Proxim Wireless Adapter cards ( very loved by wireless network auditors) are used to audit wireless networks and can give an idea what sort of information can be retrieved when wireless networks are misconfigured.

This isn't just FUD.

It is a plea to install, properly configure and monitor post installation our wireless networks.

My expertise is in finding how people break in so I can prevent them breaking in in the first place.

Wireless is just as safe as wired (I say this from my professional background - no need to argue this). We can argue efficiency but some of the new architecture 5G plus is giving enough bandwidth for a prudent home user.

I don't drop any information online that is secretive. Anyone that wants to monitor what a retired old fart like me does will simply die of boredom or commit suicide from jealousy grin
From my previous posts my interests in security issues have been established.

The issue isn't íf wireless is safe or not the issue is how his installers will install it and thus leave his network open for intruders or eavesdropping.(security misconfigurations)

Also if he has a way of determining this before it becomes an issue.

If he doesn't then avoid wireless entirely.

It is a known fact in the industry that it is easier to breach wireless networks than it is to breach Ethernet networks.

I cannot count the number of supposedly secure facilities with open wireless networks because of the ease of joining the network and no one cares enough to hack me or I have no information that can be exploited.

For the home automation, It means the whole house to be automated. There is a special distribution board for the home automation so the electrician have to separate his own from automation .. their own cable is cat 6 cable and not the regular copper cable used in house wiring. You need to involve the home automation contractors from the inception of the electrical installation.

You can go off grid whenever you are ready
EgunMogaji2:
He can also use wireless. That's what I'm using mostly.
Wireless is fine.

The difference between wireless and wired is that with wireless anyone monitoring the airwaves can find out a lot about your infrastructure, but with wired, one would have to physically connect to your network to do so.

Investment in security depends on who is being protected and what is being protected.

Given some of the information you have dropped, you are a high value target so I would advice you incorporate wireless network monitoring if you decide to go wireless.

I have a feeling that it has a huge capital outlay to start but given the proposed full privatization of power, in the long run it maybe cheaper.

Plus given the failures of the national grid, it makes sense in terms of business continuity and disaster recovery purposes to have alternative power arrangements.

So even if it is not cheaper, if you can afford it, why sacrifice the comfort?

From the standpoint of business continuity and disaster recovery it was a wrong design from the get go to have just one national grid.

It makes no sense.

If A doesn't have light then no one else should?

How about A can have light even if B's grid is nonfunctional?

Why do we say security is multi layered but with such critical infrastructure we allowed for a single point of failure? Is the failure to have electricity not a security issue as well as an economic issue?

This national grid design is faulty from the get go.

A point of failure anywhere shouldn't bring the entire country down
