Foundation work during rainy season can be horrifying.
With the fear of the rain droping before the blinding is done.
Its frustrating paying for removal of water from the excavation before blinding.

Good luck bro.

Demain_man:

@Brabus. Thank u so much. Just wondering, Is it an easy job removing already set blocks if I want to make alterations to the floor e.g changing the door positions? as in do the bricklayers use concrete saw to cut and remove the blocks or is it hammer and chiesel they use?

I am just worried about cracks in the structure. Please this question is for all gurus in the house as well (Spyder, Casey, Am Alone).

My second question is, Does a house need a main bathroom if all the rooms are ensuite?

Rgds.

Its less time consuming to destroy than to build.

To establish an opening where there is already block wall so as to locate a door, better use chiesel and hammer.
Not sledge cos that will destroy the remaining block wall.
Mason hammer and chiesel can give you what you want.

How many blocks are you expecting to use for the foundation up to DPC level?
And when are you envisaging can start the excavation?

WARNING: DO NOT hire any builder based on internet postings.  It is just like internet dating: the picture you see might be different from the person you will meet.  Expenses here have been seriously understated and experience overstated to entice the gullible. Look in your extended family first, then ask for recommendations from your friends (who built successfully), your church or mosque, etc. You have been WARNED.

WELCOME TO NAIRALAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep asking this question, what is the best way to utilise a standard plot of 120 by 60 in a residential area of low rise buildings?

If I am in your shoe I will be cultivating vegetables on that land.
Not for commercial purpose anyway.

But if I possess such asset, as one in the construction industry,
I will purchase a block moulding machine and start block moulding for commercial purpose.

Again, if the location is safe for me, I can start a poultery farm business.

@euromillion, are you still having problem sorting your way out?
You need not to.
Do the right thing by engaging a pro to do what you need.

Properties / Re: Pictures Of Beautiful Houses From Google Images by Fidelo726: 1:36pm On Jun 29, 2011
You may be right but naija is moving on quite fine.
the kind of houses you see abroad with glasses cannot be appropriate in Nigeria for security reason.
But those interiors seem more like simulation than real.

everywhere I go I like to ask this question untill I get the right answers, what is the best way to utilise a 60 by 120 plot of land in a low rise residential area?

The answer to this your question can only be answered by you.
You own the land and know what you need it for.

But if you insist, I will say start cultivating vegetables there.

I see it as blinding and out of normal to estimate for a structure one cannot see its drawing, so as to know the total square meter involved.
As a builder, I think the best spyder can do now is give you the estimate of similar structure he must have handled else where.
This will definitely not be of the same dimensions as yours. Thus cannot be a parameter for your building.

Properties / Re: Trust In The Building Industry, Is It Justified? by Fidelo726: 4:54pm On Jun 28, 2011
I think because of several disappointments many people do not want to use the word trust.
Maybe we can use the word BENEFIT OF DOUBT to replace.

This helps to combine both the Benefit part of trust and the (doubt) disappointing end if not fulfilled.

Estimated cost is not the same as actual cost,
by this i mean your final estimated quantity might be different from what is needed.
But this is mostly due to variations arising from changes and modification on the structure.
But as a contractor, one need to be careful and if error is to be made it should be on the safer side.

Your client counts on your professionalism to give him the amount required to deliver the project.
In most cases, if you underestimate you have definitely blown your profit and can only make up from other aspect of the job.

kingboy:

dear brabus ,im on this stage in my foundation laying and im advise to make a beam on top of the foundation(reason giving was that there is always a crack from the foundation of the houses in that area and i believe in doing it once). my question is that i cant find a beam on your foundation, pls advise

Are you building without a structural drawing?
Know that what happens in Mr A's building mostn't be the same with yours that is why you need it.
Every struction is unique and should be handled so.

To your question, introducing a chain beam in a structure is dependent upon the soil condition.
So, comfirm your soil condition and act accordingly.
But that has its cost implication.

Education / Re: The Nigerian Standard Of Education Is High by Fidelo726: 1:15pm On Jun 28, 2011
the standard of education in nigeria is not really as bad as most of you who have the opportunity to further your education abroad presume.
there is a curriculum that is run. a successful completion of which attest your knowledge in a specied course of study.

As one who has been through the system, the problem we have is technological and lack of update in the use of modern applications in delivering the lecture.
This makes the students go the extra mile to achieve success.
