Travel › Re: Finally Migrated To Australia At Age 48. This Is My Story So Far by Firefunmi2014: 9:09am On Aug 11, 2024 |
Usefulsense: Last year, I sought the opinion of Nairalanders concerning my plan to move to Australia. My major worry was my age (48) and also considering that my net salary in Nigeria was a little over a million Naira per month as the financial controller of a manufacturing company in Onitsha.
Below is the link to the thread I opened to seek peoples advice and I recommend that you go through the thread to fully appreciate the story that follows.
. I promised to tell my story after 3 months of my stay in Australia.
I finally left Nigeria on December 7th, 2023 and arrived the country on December 9th with my children. Today, I am exactly 3 months, 2 weeks and 6 days old in Sydney, australia.
This is not a hearsay, it is not an eye witness account, it is my story.
This is intended to guide people who maybe planning to travel outside Nigeria. Should you migrate at an age over 45 or not?
Those who told me not to go are right and those who told me to travel are also right.
Given another opportunity, will I take the decision to move out of Nigeria at 48? Have I made a mistake? How am I surviving?
You will find out in this thread.
To be continued shortly ......... Good morning my Professional colleague. Congratulation that you have finally in Australia. I am happy you took the right decision, don't allow anyone to gaslighting you about what you are doing, You know where you are coming from and where you are going. Our journey in life differs. Most important thing is happiness. As long as you are happy, just continue your own race. I read some where yesterday when Dr. Joe Abah said , he started living a comfortable life at 37years in UK when his salary moved from 25k to 50k. I actually got inspiration from his tweet. So keep pushing and supporting your wife. You will get there...... |

Iamblessed85: His narrative is a carefully curated one to serve the purpose of God knows who. It’s a sponsored story which is meant to fuel the ongoing narrative of emigration.
He is subtly nudging highly skilled workers to throw it all away and go abroad to become handiworkers and cleaners.
Of course it favours the host county to have largely skilled immigrants tending to menial labour. They would definitely add more value to the work.
In plain terms, if i advertise for a cleaner role in Nigeria and i say the criteria is a CFA or a masters degree, no Nigerian will apply.
What if i’m somehow able to get thesame qualification from another country? Well, no one will be interested as well. There’s still a way though. I may be able to pull this if i spread messages of hopelessness across disadvantaged third world countries. Even better if i use one of their own to spread this message so that highly skilled workers over there will think it’s the right thing to do.
That’s where OP comes in. You see the level of wickedness against his own people?
Usefulsense is NOT an Accountant. He was not on that pay grade. He is a fictional being who is a plant. He may not even be a Nigerian and i wont be surprised if you are him
Cc treadway. We are simply up against a huge propaganda machine by the west. Good morning, bro! I appreciate your opinion on this matter, but relocation is individual decision. I remember being one of the people who encouraged him to join his wife, just as I did two years ago. I found myself in a similar situation—my wife secured a job in the UK with all expenses covered by her employer, which allowed me to join her as a dependent. Like ops, I had my reservations, but I’ve realized that for those of us fortunate enough to have a good wife, family comes first. At the time, I hadn’t planned on joining them because I had a good job in Nigeria with a decent salary and a company-provided car. Everything was going well for me. In November 2022, I finally made the move, and by January 2023, I started working as a finance officer (I was an FCA in Nigeria). That marked the beginning of my finance career in the UK. I immediately registered with ICAEW, a recognized professional body in the UK, and I became qualified this year. After working for a year and four months, I left the company where I started and moved to another company with a higher pay grade as a finance manager. My career in the UK is now aligned with what I was doing before. From my experience, relocation is a humbling process that makes you start over. It typically comes in three stages: the survival stage (first 2-3 years), the stability stage (4-7 years), and the enjoyment stage. You need to adapt to the system. In just two years, I’ve achieved everything I set out to do in the UK. When I left Nigeria, I had two main goals: to get a car and secure a mortgage, both of which I’ve accomplished. I’m now in my stability stage, and I thank God for that. I will always be grateful to Nigeria for providing me with the educational foundation and skills that I’m now using here in the UK. There is nothing wrong in looking for greener pasture, given the situation of the country now, I cant lie to you ,It is best decision of my life which I will be forever be grateful to God for. I am triggered because of his wickedness to his own people. I view him thesame way as our forefathers that sold their kinsmen to slavery. |

aliucity1: Relax my brother.Your write up made me remember how it was for me last year May when I was about relocating to the UK with my kids.
My wife is a nurse. When we were planning relocating,I was the one who motivated my wife to read and study for all the exams that she needed to write for us to relocate.Infact,I was the one who sponsored my wife in school of nursing after searching for job as a human physiologist to no avail.
When God eventually opened the way and my wife had gone to the UK,it was time for me to join her.Meanwhiel, the kids were with me and my wife s cousin who was staying with us at that time.
The pressure was mounting from my wife to come over with the kids. She had rented 3 bedroom apartment, made everything set for us to come but all of a sudden,I developed cold feet.
I remember I also came in here to seek for advice. Alot of people advised that I take the step and start a new life in the UK.Finally,I made up my mind and I came here with my family.
Lest I forget, I wasn't earning anything close to what you are earning because I was just a federal civil servant with a monthly pay of about 150k.My age as at then was 40 years.
Fast forward to today,I thank the Lord for making me to take that bold step.I haven't gotten my desired job but I have been able to change jobs as often as I love.Currenrly,I work in the NHS as a pharmacy assistant and I tell you bro,it is worth it FINANCIALLY. What I get in a month with my wife's earning is boom.
The point is,please take this step and help yourself as well as your children. They will forever be grateful to you for this breakthrough. I have 3 kids and they are always grateful to us for bringing them to the UK.They have sound and undiluted education and it is FREE from nursery to secondary education.
Weigh your options and decide what you want.I believe you will be okay if you conquer your fears and run with FAITH.
God bless you sir. I have a similar story. My wife didn't even like UK, she likes Canada and one of her close friends told her that she should try UK and she got a job. Her relocation allowance she qualified for was £8,000. She practically came to UK with all expenses paid by her employer. As a responsible husband the only thing you can do to support her if you really love your family is to join her. I told myself I will be coming to UK on quarterly basis, by the time I did that in June and couldn't go in 3rd quarter, I started feeling bad. As a man how long will you stay without having sex, if you are child of God you didn't want to involve yourself in adultery, don't let anyone lie to you , temptation will come and you will fall like a pack of cards. I came in November, by January I got a finance role and is paying my bills for now. I have applied and got interviewed for financial controller role which is a senior role, but yet to secure one but very soon, it will happen. It is all about planning and God on one side. It will end in praise |

olril17: God bless you sir The comments are shocking and horrendous. A 48 year old man should abandon certainty to Jump to an uncertain life. It’s like committing sucide. An Accountant at 48 should go and learn forklifting or settle for care jobs. The absolute state of these comments. Do they really think life anywhere is really that easy? We are too gullible in this country. The man will regret making such move for the rest of his life. You made a valid point and you are right . For every decision taken in life there is always a consequence whether positive and negative. It is not everyone that goes to abroad that is going to do a carer job. Some people got a job from Nigeria and traveled, will you say they should have turned down the offer? Let everyone lives with the consequences of their decisions. |

franchasofficia: Reading all these chilling comments makes me more angry with APC and all their useless supporters.
Just imagine what Nigerian men are going through just to escape APC's 8 years of untold failure, kai.
Na wa oh, it is well oh The problem with some Nigerians is that we assumed a lot and quickly pass a wrong judgement without having full information. We tend to believe Nigeria problem is Apc, until we all realize that our common enemy is the elite not Apc and Pdp the better for us. The decision to join my family abroad is purely my decision and not influence by any Apc economic issues, as a matter of fact, between 2015 and 2022 was my best years in my career, during this period, I have 2 houses and 2 landed properties that worth millions. In the couple of months, I will collect my rent which will cover my ticket money to visit naija on December. It is the way you plan your life that matters and stop blaming people for your unfortunate situation. I have no regret living my job and settle in a foreign land with my family, my family take priority over any other things. one good thing a man can do for the his children is to give them that exposure and second passport. My journey in this foreign land is maximum of 15yrs and be back to Nigeria to enjoy the rest of my life in peace. Life is too short for one to dwell in negativity. |

He is under the control of a woman but can't fully express it. Use your head before mentioning me next time. As my neighbor, you always see me when my wife controls me. People like you always think because you go through a rough patch every other person must be in your shoe. The way you treat your wife in Nigeria before you travel will determine how your wife will treat you in abroad. Also, same way you will be treated at old age. Let me advise you, treat you wife better now, so that she can take care of you at old age. Otherwise, you will live your old age in loneliness. You might end up living a mesirable life. |

Then, let madam feel you small, , stay with them and survey the life style....you can give yourself a timeline to get done with Nigeria and go join them. You can agree with madam to relocate finally in the next 2,3 or 4 years. But you should always endeavour to visit during summer and spend quality time with family till you finally join them. Good advice but madam won't be able to take care of the kids alone, also the children needs the father figure in the house. 3yrs is a long time oh. |

Usefulsense: This is my story. Please advice.
I sent my wife to Australia in 2021 on student visa.
She has invited us, myself and our children aged 12 and 9 and our visa is out. I have also paid like 6 months fees for my children school which was a requirement for the visa.
Owing to her performance at her work place, the company she works for has promised to sponsor for PR. Infact, the process just began and we are sure of having the PR.
I am currently 48 and won't be able to support my family working in Nigeria. Wify has encouraged me that we will be fine that abroad is meant for 2 people.
My only constraint is my age, hence my question. If you are in my shoe, will you travel?
By the way, I work for a private firm here in Nigeria and you know what it is working for a family company. I can relate with your situation because I have been there. I left Nigeria last year to join my wife who left in 2021 on Skilled worker visa to. UK. I was 46yrs when I joined her. I have a relatively good job in Nigeria with an official car and HOD in one of the PFAs in Nigeria. I don't have plans to join them before, I was thinking I will be sending money to them but for almost 6mth I couldn't convert my Naita to Pound. Fast forward last year Nov, I took the decision to join them, it's been over 7mths now, has is it been easy ? No, but it is a journey. I started working in January, the role is related to finance which is my field, though a junior role for me experience and qualifications but is paying bills. My wife has been an amasing woman, she earns more than me but her money is our money and vice versa. In a foreign land, be ready to share bills with your wife and also the house chore with her. I usually go to store to do the chopping and atimes cook for the children. My advice for you is that you should prayerfully join your wife provided she is an amazing woman, trust me you will not regret it. I wish you best of luck |

Now, he wants to do the practical and want to use his car., considering the fact that he can only use his naija driving license for one year.
My question is when is the 1yr start counting? Is it June when he first came or November. ?
I told him that June will be seen as the date he came to UK not November.
Please someone should help me oh. I don't want him to violate the laws

Career › Re: Is Japa Worth It? by Firefunmi2014: 2:23pm On Jul 25, 2023 |
Klass99: Based on what you've shared japa is not worth it for these reasons;
1. Your pay of $3,000 makes sense in Naija and will benefit you more in Naija than jands. Don't ruin a good thing in your quest for something else. I was going to say "in your quest for something better" but I realized obodo is not actually better or as rosy as we like to think.
2. There is a global cost of living crises but some countries are worse hit than others, you have good friends who were honest with you, you best believe them. Watch international news on BBC or Al-jazeera and you'll become aware of this.
3. The narrative that our healthcare and educational sectors are totally wack, is a false and inaccurate one, don't buy into it. There are healthcare and educational institutions in the private sector, who provide quality and reliable services, for example Paelon Hospital in VI, Convenant University and a few others. You can afford them with your kind of pay or are these services now free of charge overseas?
What is it you want to go and do in obodo that you cannot achieve here? No seriously, this is a valid and introspective question you should reflect on. If I were you I will sit my butt down in Naija and actively look into home ownership, instead of packing plenty money to give a foreign country as migration fees. With the kind of money we pay these countries they should at least have 6 months accommodation or a temp job of 6 months waiting for us, to help us adapt and find our feet, then after 6 months they can say you are on your own and it will be a very fair bargain. Can their own citizens cough out the kind of money we do? Some of us in UK are not earning £2000 net in a month . We pay rent of £700, council tax £ 140, Energy £140, water bill£42, internet £ 35. Road tax £ 28, Insurance £51 grocery for family of 5 £300, how much remains. You cant quickly fix your car like Naija, you have to book to see GP before they can attend to you in hospital. What about unconscious bias. You are better off in naija if you work from home and you don't have to face traffic . |

radiolover: I have sent possibly more than 80 applications and fortunately, I got called by a few.
I have exhausted scarce resources to attend interviews, editing and re-editing resumes to fit a certain role and position, cost of transportation, I don't want to even mention having to trek a long distance sometimes due to lack of fund to pay Tfare. I mean someone is broke and hungry and trying his best to land a job but he's rather receiving rejection mails. What is this?
On Monday, I received a rejection mail from automobile company where I applied for a marketing role. On Tuesday, I received another one from a production factory.
Now I just returned from another job hunting only to open my mail and saw another rejection mail. This very one pain me most because I had high hope on it and i have spent so much on it too. During the second stage of the interview, I can remember how I waited from 8am till 5pm just to see 'Oga', and after seeing him, I began to walk my way home and got home late. I know i'm sounding sentimental here but it's so annoying that i went through all that 'ontop empty belle' and at the end, I wasnt offered the job.
Very very painful and morale killing.
I feel so bad right now.
Feels like the world has crashed.
Feels like everything has finished.
Feels like everything has ended.
Feels like more hunger for me ahead ahead.
Who has faced this before?
How did you comfort yourself? Ops. You are not alone on this journey. I can't count the number of unfortunate letter I have received in the last 6months, in the month of June I attended 3 interviews, i didn't get any offer, the one that pained me most was the one in my office. I prepared as if I was planning to write final stage of ICAN exams. I knew I did well in the interview but the role was given to less qualified person. I was in the same position you are , but after 2days I moved on to apply for more jobs. The most important thing is that you are being called for an interview, keep applying very soon you land the job of your dreams, please always get a feedback from them as this will also help you to know how to improve on yourself. I wish you best of luck |
