Nairaland GeneralRe: Fire At Texaco Filling Station, Gwarimpa Estate by flexyonline: 8:24am On Dec 25, 2012
A lot of Nigerians don't understand how this fire fighting thing works. Fire trucks don't go around with water. That's why in well planned estates, a fire hydrant system is in place. All they do is come and connect their truck(pump) to the line and have an endless supply of water. In situation where there are no water lines, they can use a well, river etc. It's because in most cases none of these is available in Nigeria that they go around with water which is very little in quantity because of the capacity of the truck. So when you complain that water finished in a fire truck, YES it is supposed to finish because the system is not designed to work that way.
PoliticsRe: Lagos Unveils Alternative Road For Lekki-epe Toll Plaza by flexyonline: 10:34am On Dec 07, 2012
I have refrained from contributing to this discussion because it is a fruitless and meaningless exercise. A lot of the people making noise on this thread do not even understand what the issues are with the way this toll road project has been done and the seeming effect on the same traffic it is supposed to ameliorate. Others are simply bad belle people who believe that everybody living in that axis is a "big man" and should be made to feel the same pains they feel elsewhere in Lagos.

For the records, I've lived on this axis for eight years now. I know when the road started and what the effect was. The traffic a lot of people complained was present before the road construction was actually caused by LCC. Before the road contruction started AT ALL, there was some trafic but definitely not at the levels seen when LCC started work on Ozumba Mbadiwe. It is this thoughless traffic a lot of people remember and believe that LCC has resolved not knowing that it was caused by LCC themselves. Same way that they'll say LCC solved Ajah traffic whenever they complete that section maybe in2014 going by the rate of construction not remembering that even as at 2009 when LCC were yet to bet to Ajah, there was not traffic in Ajah.

The second issue I want to point out is that someone in government seems not to be thinking properly concerning this issue of alternative roads. Actually, I think the alternative roads are afterthoughts, just looking for the convenient ways of saying "we provided an alternative" without giving consideration to whether it will work. I make bold to say, that road will be a nighmare both for those who chose to use it and also for those who actually pay the tolls on the main road and I will explain why. The current design says that if you are coming from Lekki to Ajah, you turn at the Chevron roundabout into Chevron drive and then rigmarole through certain places before coming out on the main road before Oluwanisola. You are then supposed to meander through the traffic going to the toll gate to the extreme left, follow the U-road before continuing on your journey tp Ajah. This is a recipe for disaster. Firstly, even now there is usaually traffic on Chevron drive because of the speed bumps and pedestian zebra crossings. When you now divert the traffic on that road, there will be mad traffic at the roundabout affecting those coming from Lekki wishing to go and pay the toll, those who paid the toll at Chevron going to Lekki, those who live in estates down Chevron drive whose properties are going to lose value and also those who want to use the alternative road. Also upon exting at Oluwanisola, the traffic will also be there because of people coming from the alternative road wishing to make the u-turn and from the toll gate itself. I make bold to say that this isn't a good arrangement for an alternative road.

More fundamentally, a lot of people especially people living abroad say people don't pay taxes and expect infrastructure. This is a most specious argument given where we are talking about. A lot of people here are your middle class who are in formal employment and do not have a choice with PAYE tax. On an average, I make to bold to say that the tax compliance % is highest in Lekki Ajah, than in any other part of Lagos. The other unfortunate thing is that even with this, the people provide things like water, inner roads, security etc for themselves because they are more organized into estates and neighbourhoods than any other part of Lagos. The argument of earning more and thus paying more does not hold water here because there should be a basic expectation from govt. You cannot tell me that you will not do anything for me simply because I earn more than the state average when I also pay more than the state average.

CrimeRe: My Armed Robbery Experience And Thoughts On The Nigerian Situation by flexyonline: 9:47am On Nov 02, 2012
Sept12: This will be my last post both under this pseudonym and on this topic.

I am disheartened that we have people on this topic that spew forth all sorts of excrement in the attempt to either sound the most "intelligent" in their village or just in order to sate their crooked desire for relevance.

First things first get understanding:
If you are going to comment please read ALL the comments in the topic. To make sure you get the facts right, see if anyone has asked the question you would ask and to compare from different perspectives.

Secondly - Perspective
If you were not there you could not know what it was like to be there so be cautious when rebuilding the scenarios. If you are abroad (and have been for a considerable amount of time) how can you ever understand when one says the police emergency line was called about 2 mins into this operation and it took them over 2 hours to respond?

Third - Objective
Check the objectives of all concerned.
The OP is not asking you for donations. Not wanting anything from you other than to help you keep safe. I went to the scene after the robbery and i saw the two dead police men. I spoke to the victims. i helped clean up. I saw the carnage. I got there before the Police investigators. I saw and yet i did not understand everything until the OP brought his own perspective. I know it is not fiction. and if it was (for people that didnt see what i saw) learn your lessons and move on. No need to come here to show your ignorance in the market of "arroganism".

Fourth - Civility
I have been here on Nairaland for about 6-7 years. I relied on Nairaland a whole lot when i was based outside Nigeria and planning my relocation. Got investment tips and made many friends who together we made some money here. I remember the exodus to 'that other forum' when Seun Osewa became totalitarian. I come here less now and i see less of the early people commenting as well.
You see? what i have learnt is that Nairaland is a perfect analog for Nigeria the country. There is a lack of respect, civility, responsibility, decorum, intelligence, exertion to understand etc etc etc...these thing needed to engender a productive modern soceity. Nigeria and Nairaland both are therefore linked. I therefore employ the same rules in both soceities. i try to live the same way in both places.
I live in Nigeria and just as I will not step into public in Nigeria to spew rubbish from my mouth in Nigeria....I will not do same here in Nairaland. I wouldnt disrespect anyone and surely would not waste my time going tangential except i had specific interest.

My point.

The level of crass disregard for civility that exists on Nairaland is appalling. People come across as unintelligent, poorly educated and with no ability to build scenarios and achieve perspective. The same exact situation Nigeria is in. And seeing that Nairaland has a younger demographic it shows the kind of future Nigeria is destined for. I think it is everyones responsibility to either contribute constructively or allow those who are ready to contribute have a forum where they can attempt to make constructive change possible.

The OP never intended this as a political forum, a crime novel or a police report to be examined on CSI. He titled it appropriately: "MY armed robbery.....". It was his personal experience and HIS perspective. Please either contribute constructively...or shut up if you are not HIM.

Goodbye.
They'll soon come and say your post is too long to read.

I've done a google search on this story and nothing came up. It shows that our news media just are not up to their their game.

On the other hand, I live quite close to all these places in the story and it's surprising that this is the first I'm hearing of it. To think that my estate security department still sent out a security advisory last week and nothing was mentioned about this incident! I need to query a lot of people!!
HealthRe: The Facts And Myths Of Sickle Cell Disease by flexyonline: 5:33pm On Oct 31, 2012
I want to correct this fallacy going on here that according to genetics, two AS parents will give birth to their children in a certain order i.e. AA, AS, AS & SS. THIS IS TOTALLY FALSE!!

Each birth for two AS parents is mutually exclusive form others i.e. the genotype of one child has absolutely no bearing on what the genotype of any other child can be. The probability plays out exclusively in each birth independently meaning that the chance of two AS parents having an SS child is 1/4 or inversely the probability of not having an SS child is 3/4. If the parents are lucky and have even five children, their luck may play out in the 3/4 probability and none of their children will be SS. However, the dangers lies in where in each roll of the dice (birth), their luck plays out the 1/4 every time they have a child and have all their children being SS. This is a very possible scenario and is why two AS people are advised not to marry each other.

ayubam: Hebrews 13:5
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave, never will I forsake you".

This is the promise that should guide your life anywhere you live. I have lived in Nigeria and now living in UK. I worked in 2 commercial banks in Nigeria (top rated banks)and my last role was as a credit risk analyst. By the grace of God, I work as an analyst (SAS risk Analytics) in UK and all i had was a 2.2 B.tech honours in Mechanical Engineering from a state University in naija. I faced initial struggle in UK of lack of UK work experience and it took me 5months of staying at home, study - articles, careers mentoring, Risk Analytics journal, interviewing and above all praying and travails before I got my current job. Many thanks to my wife who encourages me to stay through with my believe and desire and did not for one day do any strange job in UK but supported the family with her account assistant job while on post study visa.

I entered UK as Tier 1 general migrant and currently there are many SAS contract roles offering btw 500-600pounds per day but enjoying the stability of my work and want a minimum of 3 yrs experience as SAS analyst added to my 6 yrs banking experience in naija as I am just like 20months in UK. I have loads of naija project manager and auditors getting btw 500-1000pound per day as project/risk managers, business analyst etc and if you know what you are doing with a solid accountants(tax consultants), you will probably take home 80% of that money (i.e 20% tax) without breaking any law.

I have shared this personal experience to let you know that God can bless anywhere. Our blessing is not a factor of whether I am in Nigeria or living in UK. There is a key that unlock doors everywhere. I personally dont like defeatist mentality of going back home. There are loads of Asians doing well (SME businesses) in UK with bank funding as low as 6%.

Do i love to come back home? Absolutely I will one day not decided yet (MANY FACTORS INVOLVED) but not with defeatist mindset that i can only do well in naija. I have seen evidence of God's grace in my life that I can do well anywhere in the world. many people clamouring to go back to naija re doing so cos of lawless practices that allows you to profit largely from the system while contributing little to the system.

Above all,

Hebrews 13:5

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave, never will I forsake you"
The bolded above is the part that I quarrel with. Is that also not a defeatist attitude?
CareerRe: Blue-collar Job In The UK Or White-collar Job In Nigeria? by flexyonline: 9:57pm On Oct 11, 2012
The folks living in Naija can never win in this discussion left to the UK folks. It's head you lose, tail you lose for them. If you give good examples, they shout you down that it's only a few people that fall in the bracket or you are a crook as if it is forbidden to have a good life in Nigeria. my personal experience is that a lot of UK folks have completely precluded the possibility that the average Joe who is neither a politician nor a crook can have a meaningful existence in Naija. I schooled in the UK and presently live in Nigeria and my reality is that life can deal you a very good hand wherever you are. I chose not to stay in the UK because I was offered a job of 32,000 pounds then in the oil industry (north sea). I was already working in Naija before going to school and that amount was about half my Naija pay then. I advised myself that the place was not for me as I am not satisfied with just "quality of life". I wanted a lot more, to be able to pursue dreams, and the types I had needed real money to actualize. If only people realize what the Nigerian content thing in the oil industry affords people with the requisite knowledge and skills. And please don't bring up the connection thing as there are hardworking innovative folks in the industry who are cleaning out legitimately without knowing anybody. I'm not diminishing the value of networking as it is applicable everywhere.

In the same vein, I have friends who are doing quite well in the Uk as well as those who are living quietly and honestly with their 25,000 pounds jobs. In the final analysis, everyone should pursue their dreams wherever they feel they'll actualize them
CareerRe: Blue-collar Job In The UK Or White-collar Job In Nigeria? by flexyonline: 6:20pm On Oct 11, 2012
coogar: first ask yourself how they are able to buy their £500,000 homes in the uk.....they do so via buying a mortgage. most of the lekki houses too come with mortgages but that's beside the point. a worker earning £50k per annum with a good credit rating can have access to more than £500k in loans/credit-cards. houses don't have to be bought cash down like those rogues do in nigeria - it's not normal in any developed part of the world.
I'm not discussing how people in Lekki buy (more like build) their homes though I disagree that most use mortgages. The mortgage market in Naija is in its infancy so IS not how most people here get thir homes. However, for someone in the UK to commit that kind of money to a house in Naija (even through a mortgage) that implies that the person has no life in the UK. What of the mortgage on the house he is living in and the other bills. And we are even talking about high earners here and not the majority who earn between 15000 - 25000 pounds per annum.

I may not understand maths a lot but pls how does someone who earns 25,000 - 50,000 pounds per annum in the UK afford a duplex in Nigeria. In my part of Naija duplexes go for btw 50 - 150 million naira which is about 200,000 to 600,000 pounds. How is this transaction possible please?

Lesson learnt: Lying and backing it up with prayer does not work. This French team is a lesson for us. Look at young girls that you can clearly see have been well taught the rudiments of football. Their technique is flawless and you can see they have good structure on ground. For us we think that by assembling 20 something year old, cutting off their hair to make them look young, will make us successful. It's even a shame that these French girls that you can clearly see are young can still beat our cheating girls. Smh.

I can actually list a thousand things that could happen for Nigeria's flag to fly at half mast. However, I believe Joshua's propohecy is specific and as such cannot be all the thousand things at once. If the president, VP, Senate President, House of Reps etc die, flags will fly at half mast. If their wives die, same thing. Ministers nko? First class traditional rulers nko? So which one are we talking about exactly?

One of my greatest fears too, as a medical doctor i know much about it and it scares the poo out of me. I am sorry to say this (forget that i am a doctor), but i see people with autism like - SCHIZOPHRENICS (ashiere) - I know there is a lot of difference, but that is my own perception.[quote]One of my greatest fears too, as a medical doctor i know much about it and it scares the poo out of me. CrimeRe: Banker Kills LASTMA Official In Lagos by flexyonline: 12:24pm On Aug 11, 2012
The underlying cause of this incident is not being highlighted here. The root cause of this incident is the wicked and punitive nature of LCC that has that lekki-épée road concession. That mega chicken junction is a major entrance to an estate of over 1000 houses many of who their business takes them to VI for work as such will need to turn back towards chevron toll gate. What did LCC do? They put the turning about 20m after the junction and then the next one at VGC. Because people don't want to spend 30 mins to go and turn in VGC because of this same LCC traffic, they drive not on the main road (so it's not one way) but in front of the estate and get on the road opposite the turning to make that turn. This is where LASTMA officials hide to catch people. What I don't get is that LASG wants the people to conform to 21st century laws while they provide 19th century infrastructure. You don't have good roads or signs, no traffic cameras, no vehicle database and you want to enforce laws. For instance, if you contravene me for driving without seatbelt, how do you prove it? Word of mouth? Govt needs to get it's act right.

FYI I don't have any slightest sympathy for LASTMA. Sorry, to say but I'm not sad they are killed. I'm sorry really and feel bad for feeling this way but can't help it.
