Talk to those who speak or claim Yoruba (as an ethnicity) and they will quickly tell you that “God” in their language is expressed by the following words:

Olorun
Oluwa
Eledumare
Olodumare

They will also tell you that “devil” in their language is Esu. These words, when broken down, are a far cry from the Christian God/Devil as we will explore later.

However, we must label the source of this confusion to none other than the Missionary Samuel Ajayi Crowther http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Ajayi_Crowther and his Christian father, John C. Raban. Crowther was the victim of Muslim slave raiders who, under pressure from European slave raiders, sold his family into the slave trade. This would have a definitive effect on Crowther and his appreciation of Christianity in relations to African spirituality. He obviously favored Christianity since he mislabeled Esu as the Devil and God as Olorun, Oluwa, Eledumare, and Olodumare. ·The word Olorun, while presented as the Christian God is merely a description of the Christian God in the Yoruba language. When broken down, the word is Olo-Orun – Olo means “owner” while Orun means “sky”. This means that upon hearing the descriptions of the faux monotheist Christian God from missionaries, the Yoruba speakers came up with this description.

·The word Oluwa is also used by many Yoruba speakers to mean God. However, when broken down it is Olu-Owa/Wa” – Olu meaning “crown/apex/zenith” and Wa meaning “come”.

·The word Eledumare is used by many Yoruba to mean the Christian God, but if we break down this word “Ele-Du–Mare”, we get Ele which means “piece patched upon”; Du means “to make”; and Mare means “the act of making with infinite possibilities”. This does not mean the Christian God and is another African description of the monotheist Christian God that missionaries described to Africans.

·The word Olodumare is also used by many to also mean the Christian God but once broken down the word does not mean God in the Christian sense. Olo means “owner”, Du means “to make” and Mare means “the act of making with infinite possibilities”.

·The word Esu is used in the Yoruba language to mean “devil”. However, Esu as a divinity cannot mean devil because “In Yoruba philosophy, Esu emerges as a divine trickster, a disguise- artist, a mischief-maker, a challenger of orthodoxy, a shape-shifter, and an enforcer deity. Esu is the keeper of the divine ase with which Olodumare created the universe; a neutral force who controls both the benevolent and the malevolent supernatural powers; he is the guardian of Orunmila’s oracular utterances” (Professor Funso Aiyejina in his work Esu Elegbara: A Source of an Alter/Native Theory of African Literature and Criticism). As the reader should start to see, these words are not indicative of a natural belief in a supreme deity. They are descriptions from a Yoruba language perspective in which the Christian God is being described.

The reason we, including your honorable self, open threads is usually for the purpose of eliciting viewpoints from the other side that one might have missed or overlooked.
But viewpoints have to stand on firm logical and sensible grounds to be considered, let alone accepted.

plaetton: No, there is no difference in the standard english spoken in these places.
What you have are drawls, different pronunciations , voice inflections and broken shortforms.
A jamaican speaks with a jamaican accent but clearly understands , writes and reads standard english.
Same thing with Americans. Americans even different accents depending on whether you are in the North or the South, the east or the West.

In the Uk, the same applies.

I have never read any literary work written in an Irish accent, Jamaican accent( except for cartoons or comedies) or the southern accents of the united states.
American schools teach and write in standard english. American authors write in standard english .

I first read shakespear when I was secondary school class 2, and I understood and enjoyed it, irrespective of the that it was written in old standard English .
Shakespear, in any other variation of english other than the original would be garbled nonsense.

Achebe's Things Fall Apart , written in Ebonics(lol) or Jamaican Patua, or Warri broken English would be a piece of garbage.

There are words that are lost in translation.....the bible is not complete in translation

I can understand translating a bible to a particular language. That was not my concern in the op.
Today, everyone speaks one standard english that everyone in every country can understand.
Therefore, if it was about language per se, then there would be only one standrad edition of the English bible.
Not so , sir?

But today, we have one standard english taught in schools and used world wide for communication, so why do we have more than 50 different editions (and growing) of the english bible currently in circulation?

How can the truth of one edition be the same as the others?
If they are the same truth, then what is the point of revisions and editions?.
The truths of the bible are in words.
Therefore periodic alteration of words would undoubtedly alter the wholeness and completeness of presumed truths of the bible.

That is the issue I want all to dwell on and help me understand.

okeyxyz: Not denying, but differentiating what is true representation of God from what is not. Perhaps some explanation would make sense to you: God created everything perfect in the beginning until man chose the law of corruption(The tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil ) over the law of good. This was how the conscience of sin came about and man began to perceive evil in everything that God himself had declared to be good. Thus all forms of fear, insecurities, negative emotions, complexes, diseases and ultimately death. This Tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil is actually the Law of Moses in the beginning, when Adam(man) adopted it to rule his conscience and it became human nature. The presentation of this law to Moses was just a formalization of what was already human nature. It appears to be from God but it is actually God permitting man's choice to run it's full course. The coming and death of Jesus(who was actually the personification of the Law) on the cross fulfilled the death of this wicked Law, and hence it's abolishment.

So God did not inspire this law, rather this law is a corruption of God's true law/image, A knowledge of good and evil or in other words: a corruption of good with evil. So the new testament is an abolishment and separation from this law.
