9jakool: lol Oyo kept knocking on their boarders. Remember Great Oyo expanded from Nigeria to Togo and near the Ghanaian boarder. They were humiliated in the battle of Atakpame. The Akyem kingdom of Ghana asked for the military aid of Oyo and its vassal states against the Ashanti's control. They were humiliated at the battle of Atakpame when Oyo's coalition ambushed and defeated them. The loss was even recorded by the Europeans who had trade interests im the area. And he came here to make fallacious and malicious statement that his ancestors were bossing their oga! What an irony!? |

Just30: The Ghana Empire (c. 400 until c. 1200), properly known as Awkar (Ghana or Ga'na being the title of its ruler) was located in what is now southeastern Mauritania and western Mali. Complex societies based on trans-Saharan trade with salt and gold had existed in the region since ancient times[1] But the introduction of the camel to western Sahara in the 3rd century A.D. gave way to great changes in the area that became the Ghana Empire. By the time of the Muslim conquest of North Africa in the 7th century the camel had changed the ancient more irregular trade routes into a trade network running from Morocco to the Niger river. The Ghana Empire grew rich from this increased trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt allowing for larger urban centres to develop. It furthermore encouraged territorial expansion to gain control over the different trade-routes.
When Ghana's ruling dynasty began is uncertain; it is mentioned for the first time in written records by Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī in 830.[2] In the 11th century the Cordoban scholar Abu Ubayd al-Bakri collected stories from a number of travelers to the region, and gave a detailed description of the kingdom. He claimed that the Ghana could "put 200,000 men into the field, more than 40,000 of them archers" and noted they had cavalry forces as well.[3]
As the empire declined it was finally made a vassal to the rising Mali Empire at some point in the 13th century. When the Gold Coast in 1957 became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to regain its independence from colonial rule it was renamed in honor of the long gone empire [b from which the ancestors to the Akan people of modern-day Ghana are thought to have migrated.[4] Who told you this empire was established in Ghana? @bolded 1, said it all Last @bolded is a result from scientific research hence it can't be accepted as a fact. Stop claiming other people . THIS EMPIRE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PRESENT DAY GHANA. OOHA! See the map and Just30: The Ashanti (also spelled Asante) Empire (1701–1957) was an Akan empire and kingdom in what is now modern-day Ghana. The Ashanti Empire expanded from Ashanti to include the Brong-Ahafo, Central region, Eastern region, Greater Accra region, and Western region, of present-day Ghana. The Ashanti benefited from early firearm adoption. Combined with effective strategy, they fashioned an empire that stretched from central Ghana to the present-day Ivory Coast. Due to the empire's military prowess, wealth, architecture, sophisticated hierarchy and culture, Ashanti has been extensively studied and has more historiographies by European, primarily British, authors than almost any other indigenous culture of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Starting in the late 17th century, the Ashanti king Osei Tutu (c. 1695 – 1717) and his advisor Okomfo Anokye, established the Ashanti Kingdom, with the Golden Stool of Asante as a sole unifying symbol. Osei Tutu oversaw a massive Ashanti territorial expansion,[3] building up the army by introducing new organization and turning a disciplined royal and paramilitary army into an effective fighting machine.[3] In 1701, the Ashanti army conquered Denkyira, giving the Ashanti access to the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean coastal trade with Europeans, notably the Dutch.
The Ashanti Kingdom is the home to Lake Bosumtwi, Ghana's only natural lake. The state's current economic revenue is derived mainly from trading in gold bars, cocoa, kola nuts and agriculture; forest has also been cleared to plant cassava, maize and yams.[4]
Today the Ashanti Kingdom survives as a constitutionally protected, sub-national proto-state[5] and traditional state in union with the Republic of Ghana. The current king of the Ashanti Kingdom is Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Asantehene. This is where your ancient Empires was established.

While Nigeria's Universities are churning out international renowned people our Ghanaian and Kenyan brothers are snapping pictures of beautiful architectural buildings in there universities though I give Kudos to their management skills but what about the teaching skills? Abi na fine you wan go chop for University? Wetin dem don produce? Are they better than the ones produced by Nigeria's Universities? What area of specialty is your universities good at? We know Oxford University is good at Art, Massachusetts Institute is good at technology, Harvard University is good almost good at everything, and on our side, University of Ibadan is good at Art (especially literature), and Medicine, University of Lagos known for Art(law, journalism), University of Nigeria for (Business, Banking and Medicine), Obafemi Awolowo University (Business, law and Technology) etc Limit it to UI vs Nairobi University and University of Ghana. University of Ibadan Wole Soyinka - Chinuae Achebe Alexander Animalu - The only African member to date of the Advisory Board of the Euro-Journal Physica(B)[2] and the only African member of the Editorial Board of the Hadronic Journal Mikel Omolewa former President of UNESCO General Conference and Ambassador of Nigeria to UNESCO Emeka Andalucia former Commonwealth Secretary-General Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi - former President of the United Nations Human Rights Council and Head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID). They said University of Ghana is better than Nigeria's University but I said let us compare University of Ibadan with University of Ghana by listing international renowned alumni from both Universities but the guy gave a name of someone who never had his tertiary education in Ghana. What a shame. He doesn't know we have a alot of scientists in NASA and other places too. Now, I challenge or dare the Ghanaians and Kenyans to list the names of international renowned alumni of their best University, to compare and contrast with the alumni of University of Ibadan. We are not interested in beautiful campuses or infrastructures but the quality of education in them and what caliber of people they churned out and are still churning out till today. I know you chickened out initially but I will give you another chance to redeem your battered image. I am waiting. NairobiWalker, Just30 |

Just30: Of course Ashanti is greater than Benin Ashanti Kingdom in the only surviving Kingdom in Africa. Empire The Ashanti Empire (or Confederacy), also Asanteman (1701–1896), was a West African state of the Ashanti, the Akan people of the Ashanti Region, Akanland in modern day Ghana. Due to the empire's military prowess, sophisticated hierarchy, social stratification and culture, the Ashanti empire had one of the largest historiographies of any indigenous Sub-Saharan African political entity. mehr History of Africa Some notable pre-colonial states and societies in Africa include the Nok culture, Mali Empire, Ashanti Empire, Kingdom of Mapungubwe, Kingdom of Sine, Kingdom of Saloum, Kingdom of Baol, Kingdom of Zimbabwe, Kingdom of Kongo, Ancient Carthage, Numidia, Mauretania, the Aksumite Empire, the Ajuran Sultanate and the Adal Sultanate. mehr Sub-Saharan Africa The Ashanti Empire arose in the 16th century in modern-day Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. mehr Sofia Its collections encompass diverse cultural items such as Ashanti Empire sculptures, Buddhist art, Dutch Golden Age painting, works by Albrecht Dürer, Jean-Baptiste Greuze and Auguste Rodin, among others. mehr Asante dialect It is spoken in and around Kumasi, the capital of Ashanti Region and the former Ashanti Empire and current subnational Asante Kingdom within Ghana. mehr History of the world The Ashanti Empire rose to power in what is modern day Ghana in 1670. 9jakool: History is a no go area if you don't want to get slaughtered mercilessly.
I laugh at the bolded 500 years ago, when Benin empire was hiring mercenaries from Portugal, Ashanti empire was not even in existence.
If you love the name so much, you should know that Ashanti wasn't the chosen name for Ghana. "Ghana" was a name taken from an empire in modern day Mauritania.
btw Benin is not even close to the pronunciation of "benign". FACT: Benin was the name chosen by the modern day Benin republic as well as the name given to the entire coast (bight of Benin) fromGhana to Nigeria. That should tell you something. Get that in your head. Oyo empire ordinary mercenaries(not even the light army) humbled, humiliated, crushed, pummeled and defeated the whole mighty large 200,000 armies of Ashanti kotoko empire. Wetin go happen if they face the main Oyo empire calvary? Suicidal! |
