Looking at the average grades from the professional course in offshore technology (5 years) from 2015 and 2016 respectively, you'll see a great drop in average grades (I am not claiming however, that results from this course is necessarily representable for the master's your planning on taking, but I believe that it's a great pointer). If I had to place the Norwegian system in percentage then: In 2015 average admision grades were from 78-86% of the Norwegian grade scale. 2:1 on the Norwegian scale (which is a system of relativity) is probably around 70-80% or B more than likely. In 2016 everyone who applied were granted admission. The numbers from 2017 aren't released, but I'm more than certain that everyone were granted admission this year as well.
Based on that I'd say you have excellent chances of being granted admission.
Thanks for the response and info bro... It was quite useful.
Please, I'd like to know if you are currently in Stavanger, and school in Uni. of Stavanger.
Based on my research, I found out that even if one has some sort of savings, one still needs some level of part time job over there to survive.
I'm well aware that jobs ain't really readily available, but what sort of menial jobs do most international students do over there?
I know a few fellows that got jobs in their departments, research and teaching assistantships. What do you think are the requirements?
StarFlux: Not sure. I do know that ideally you'll need a B average from your master’s to be considered (at least in some institutions), but beyond that I only know that the project outline (as always I guess) is extremely important. Having some publications doesn't hurt either.
Hello StarFlux, you are doing a great job here, making out time to attend to people's queries and all with out any charges... That's impressive man!
Please, I have made some level of research on one of Uni. of Stavanger Master's courses, which is MSc in Marine and Offshore Technology.
Based on these, (polytechnic, YABATECH, with OND - upper credit, HND - distinction, BSc Uni. of Ibadan, with a strong 2:1, all in Civil/Structural Engineering, with over five years cognitive industry experience in my field, four paper publications etc.), I'd like to know your view as to my chances at securing the admission. I'm planning August 2018 intake.
meilleur: I AM LOSING MY MIND, KINDLY ADVISE. I am a doctor and corper, posted to one of the military hospitals in Lagos. I was actually pregnant b4 service and few months in service, I was delivered of a baby. I was made to observe my maternity leave and I resumed this January but ever since resumption, it has not been easy. I returned this Jan to meet a newly posted military boss (doctor) who hasn’t made life bearable for my daughter and I I was initially taking my baby to work, but as a baby, she is susceptible to infections of all kinds. I opted to take her to a day care. I worked 8am to 2pm before this new boss, but now, 8am to 4pm. And two weekends in a month, I do ‘weekend call’ which makes the matter worse, for such a week, I practically have few hours to spend with my baby and the government is talking of 6 months exclusive breastfeeding. I met with another LGI who said corpers were not meant to do calls. I don’t need all time off work, all I need is my normal 8am-2pm, Mon to Fri I was doing and I will manage to cope without complaining. I thought NYSC promised married and nursing mothers a better treatment, if not, I would have waited till this yr, now that I am even 30. My concern is my baby, she is growing seriously lean by the day, she lacks attention and my boss doesn’t care. She has had persistent rashes and big boils for over a month she resumed day care and its totally driving me crazy. I went to see my Local govt inspector to complain only for him to chicken out just because a military woman lambasted him on phone, leaving me to my fate. If something bad happens to my 5-month old daughter, NYSC wld say, "but why were u silent?" It’s a military setting and really don’t know the process of lodging complaints. My boss seems to be a sadist, maybe not, but she has really never been nice to me. A scenario; My baby was hot overnight and I felt I needed to watch her a little before dropping her at the day care, and I felt I needed to inform my boss. I called her, no response, sent her a text message of late coming, she didn’t respond only for me to get to work and she said all sorts. Her own grown child fell ill, she took the day off. If this is what NYSC is all about, it is seriously not worth it! I have 2 months to complete NYSC, but I can’t help seeing my baby in this condition. Even at work, I lose focus. Can u imagine what a doctor out of her senses can do?? Its tearing me apart!! Am I taking it too personal or the treatment should be fairer? I am literally losing my mind and nobody is fighting my course. WHAT DO I DO?
Please, attend to the needs of your baby. That is your priority! You are a Corps member, and not a full time staff, and should not be treated as such!! Apply formally for a break, ignore your LGI and press serious complain over at NYSC office and make sure they minute on it, then carry on as you deem appropriate with your baby's health. As for the military officer, I believe she's not a sadist, she's a maniac... She's mad, a fellow mother at that. Ignore her ranting, threats and all, cos that's all she can do, and the worst she can ever do is to report you to NYSC authority or refuse to recommend you for possible employment. If anything happens to your baby, nothing will change in that reference hospital or anywhere else... You will leave to regret for the rest of your life why you chose work as priority over your baby. What's your husband saying? Don't worry, it's almost over... Less than two months. Keep the spirit up and your mind at peace.

After worrying and fuzzing over nothing, I finally have it. At work right now, but it is a sweet feeling. Still thanking God for it all. I read contents on this forum and expatforum, and it has rili helped. Grateful to everyone for their contributions. I wish us all success in our endeavors. May our dreams come true.
Congrats bro... Please, I will appreciate the gesture if you can be kind enough to help me with you CDR format and career episodes. My email is fenusn@gmail.com
Ok. I work in a bank (IT Network and Comms). I assessed under EA and my assessment outcome was fantastic. 2 of my 3 career episode was based on work experience (inside the bank ooo).
EOI....check ITA....check
Long story short, it doesn't matter where you work. It is what you are doing or have done (as reflected in your reference, resume and episodes, if you are an engineer).
Are you a banker?
Hello Jamson, I'm a civil/structural engineer, with over six years experience. I need you to please make out time and answer these few questions regarding EA assessment: 1. Do I need to have NSE/COREN license before applying for assessment? 2. How long did your assessment take? 3. Is IELTS required for assessment? If yes, which did you take, academic or general? I'm guessing general. 4. How much did you pay, and what's the breakdown? 5. Do you mind I have a sample of your CDR?
Fair enough... But depth of excavation is a function of geotechnical report, which informs the engineer on the profiles of various soil bearing capacities with depth. One doesn't just choose to excavate or not. By the way, are you a structural or geo-structural engineer?
I enjoyed reading your post. CFA piling is a potential solution to overcoming a weak soil with poor subgrade reaction and bearing pressure. The problem with construction in Nigeria is there are no strong Building Controls,Health and Safety Executive and Construction regulations that punishes poor construction. People are more concerned with getting the building up irrespective of the ground conditions and the construction methodology adopted.
Piling is NOT the last resort to overcoming a weak subgrade.
Barselonia: Well it depends on type of foundation you are using If u are doing a raft foundation ,u don't need to dig down ,just make ur form work, reinforced it ,you are good to go, since d surrounding Is still going to be fill with sharp sand.
But in situations of hollow block.. ..dont try it
What do you mean by... 'you don't need to dig down'?
As construction cost rises due to attendant rise in prices of building materials, the trend of building houses directly on sand has been observed to be on the increase especially by unscrupulous developers and contractors. Having carried out an independent monitoring of construction activities in some areas in the Ajah axis of Lagos lately, it became obvious that in order to save cost people have resorted to constructing buildings directly on sand.
The awkward idea been adopted in most of the cases under study is to sand-fill the land, level and compact it with the use of machines and the construct a reinforced concrete strip foundation directly over it without recourse to minimum construction/engineering standards. They do so very quickly so that before any of the regulatory bodies saddled with the responsibility of building control gets wind of their ill act, they are already on super-structure level at which point it is burdensome to ascertain how the foundation was actually built.
On a particular site, using this vague method the entire foundation including the ground floor slab was put up in one week and by the next week, they were already building up the walls and frame. Dishonest developers thrive in such indecent acts and sell or lease these buildings to unsuspecting prospective buyers who in-turn occupy them or cause others to do so by way of lease/rent too. There is no consideration for lives and properties put at risk of an imminent collapse even as some of the buildings observed are already exhibiting symptoms of instability and sick building syndrome pre-occupancy.
Five years post-occupancy, the building over-settles (or sink) and then tilt in a particular direction. When asked, some of these developers claim that before there will be any major issue with the building they would have recouped the returns on their investment and its left to the new owner to do a repair by way of underpinning as the need arises. To know that some greedy professionals have joined the bandwagon of quacks in delivering such poor structures is condemnable. This act should not be encouraged in any form.
Here are some structural considerations; normally after leveling and compacting operation has been carried out on a sand-filled land it still remains a made-up ground. Although the land becomes stiff at sub-surface levels, this doesn’t in anyway erase the fact that the underlying bad soil (or peat) remains intact and retains its poor attributes. Peats are highly compressible soils and will naturally compress upon the impact of load. As this happen, the building will settle indifferentially, especially during seasonal changes and mass movement of the earth; which occurs at various times of the year. Such structural anomaly often leads to poor stability of the building and eventually a collapse if unable to bear the load, especially for single or multi-storied structures.
Rising cost of building materials should not be a yardstick to adopt poor construction methods in the construction of buildings and estate infrastructure anywhere. The authorities should not turn a blind eye to such activities that jeopardizes or threatens the lives of people as well as the overall health of the built environment. Project owners and developers should not connive with contractors or builders to manipulate well established engineering prinicples. It is important to select a good contractor for your projects. Yes, there is room for adopting cost-saving methodologies like the use of dry construction methods, cold brick construction, etc but bad construction methods is never the way to go.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with building on sand or made ground!!! If you are referring to the picture as a reinforced concrete strip foundation, you are most definitely wrong and ill-informed. The picture shows a raft (ground beam and slab system) foundation on well blinded and stabilised level. Sand is a very friendly material, which consolidates almost immediately, and does not settle or heave. On the contrary, clay, silty clay, peat and others are very poor materials that are often removed and replaced with sand. In designing foundations (solid slab raft, beam and slab raft, cellular and buoyancy raft etc) on made ground, the governing parameters are settlement, differential settlement, bearing pressure, punching shear etc. These are most of the time not considered by engineers, due to lack of proper understanding of soil-foundation-superstructure interaction. Settlement is never a problem, the real and most dangerous challenge is excessive and differential settlement! These can undermine the structural integrity of a building or structure, and consequently result to failure. Due to the level of corruption in Nigeria, developers, building professionals, quacks and government officials etc, in fact, all hands are seriously on deck, encouraging sharp practices in the industry and the country at large. Collapse of buildings will continue to occur until such a time where it is passed and a criminal offence with capital punishment. Certain people in certain quarters ought to be jailed or summarily executed.
What's different between NDA and Army training school? Is it not the same thing? Our english sometime, ehn
He actually meant 'army depot'...They are NOT the same man!!...NDA is for officer, in the capacity of a university, whose degrees are approved by NUC, while depot is a military training facility for NCOs (other ranks...six-nine months trainning).
He will start from second leutenant up to field marshal(5 star general) if he doesn't die or get dismissed.
This is for the army NOT airforce!...In the airforce, its pilot officer, and six months later, he will be promoted to flying officer...He can rise to the highest rank possible, ie if he survives.
queencalipso: Where is RSM(regimental sergeant major) and CSM( company sergeant major) under non commissioned army.
These are appointments ma'am...they are appointments held on by NCOs with the rank of warrant officer 1 and 2, and its equivalents in the airforce and navy.
DirtyGold: commissioned as Pilot Officer and can attain the highest rank possible Those are appointments meant for chosen people on certain rankslol Do you have an "army" that can actually do anyhing about it? In simple terms, commissioned officers are the senior officers jus like we have SSS and JSS in secondary school
What's tha business?
The basic and most important difference is LEVEL OF AUTHORITY!
@bellong and others helping out here... Thanks for the awesome work you guys are doing! Its actually invaluable. Thumbs up...and God bless you all.
Please, kindly see if you and your guys can help me out here.
I am a Civil/Structural Engineer, with ND, HND and BSc, all in Civil Engineering. Since Civil Engineering happens to be a professional course, that requires licensing after four years experience+BSc, and/or two years experience+HND+BSc. I read somewhere on anzscosearch.com that registration or licensing may be required for civil, structural, geotechnical etc.
1. How does this affect my assessment, cos I will be due for licensing at the beginning of third quarter this year? 3. I have over four years work experience after my HND and less than two years work experience after my BSc. Now, how do you think this EA guys will count my number of years of experience? Will it require that I need to tender all three certificates for the number of years of experience on them?
Really sorry for the length of words, and please, kindly disregard any typo error(s)...typing frantically.
RennyX: Good day Nairalanders. A very depressed soul needs your advise to make an important decision. This is going to be a long post, i apologize for the stress. Bear with me.
I have been with my girlfriend for close to a year now. Everything was good at the beginning as usual with our little fights here and there. I have my own fault as i tend to flare up easily and she does has hers too. She's usually very rude and she shouts a lot even when we are having a little misunderstanding in public. We both agreed we were going to work on these flaws to make everything go smooth and i tell you I've always tried my best in that aspect.
But recently my girlfriend has been acting funny. She doesn't call frequently and she prefers to chat most times. Although this is an issue that i encountered at the early stages of our relationship because she said that's how she is so i tried my best to cope with it even though i wasn't sitting well with it. However, things have changed drastically to the extent that she doesn't even call at all or check up on me on social media.
There was a time i called her like five times(I usually call only twice and if you're not picking i chill and wait for a call back), because i wanted her to pick up but she didn't. Instead she sent me a "hi" message on whatsapp without an explanation for why she didn't pick my call.
Also, she doesn't pay attention to me when we are in a conversation. She fixes her interest on other things like her phone, the television or just staring at the ceiling like I'm a bore to her.
So all these made me to think deep and ask what may have been wrong. I wanted to conclude that she was getting tired of the relationship but I said let me ask her first maybe it was my fault. I know that sometimes I can be controlling and authoritative but it's not my fault sometimes because she does anyhow when left to do her things alone. It's like she wants me to always tell her what to do. But when i do, it's a problem.
So when I asked her she told me everything that she was not tired but I was putting pressure on her. I promised to stop pressurising her and I also asked her to change from her behaviour and become who she once was and we agreed.
Last week, on a Wednesday morning I woke up to her message on whatsapp and I replied without getting any reply till like 12 so I decided to call her. She told me that she was eating and she would call me when she was done. After an hour she hadn't called and i called again and she told me that she was sorry that she was watching a movie.
I got angry and complained to her, but instead she was rude (as she usually is) and started raising her voice. She said what had happened is in the past and she cannot do anything about it then she hung up.
I'm fed up. I don't know if there's any other guy although I've noticed some shady behaviors of hers but they aren't concrete enough. This is not the kind of relationship i want because it's obvious that we are on a different perspective. I don't bug my girl or attach myself to her, but I also feel that the right things should be done in the right measure.
It's been a week now and she hasn't called or sent a message even on Christmas Day. I want to call her now and break up, but I'm confused cos I still lover her. She has her good side which is rare in most girls.
Sorry for the long post once again. Please help with your contributions.
Bro, you actually don't need a girl to act up to know if she's into you or not. My method has always been and will always be to check and check again if she adds value to me or not. The moment my check shows that there's no value added, I drop her and move on! I don't date for dating sake, I date to marry. A man needs a girl close to her to motivate and inspire him to survive this recession and plan a better life together. You seen smart, but ask yourself why you are dating...At this level, you should have other important things (i.e. career, business, money, more money, good life, good health, touring the globe, vacations etc) distracting you from girls, but if otherwise, I will say you ain't really a man, no offence meant. Forget about that girl totally and plan your future, first by surviving this recession comfortably, and soaring higher. There are as much as good girls as bad girls, just remove your mind from girl, then the good ones will surface.
I agree with most of what you wrote save the quotes I highlighted in red. From the pictures I have seen, there is no evidence that the concrete quality was bad and also, there is no evidence that the columns meant to take the horizontal thrust failed. From all the pictures I have seen, the roof simply collapsed on itself. It was too heavy to stand. Just look at the size and weight of a single steel truss, then multiply it by the total number used for the whole roof, you will realize the roof cannot stand even place alone on the ground. The concrete pillars and beams were still standing after the collapse. See this video;
I also doubt the pillars and beams can withstand the weight of the roof for long even if the roof had not collapsed, they look too flimsy. See the ease with which a small crane snapped the beams and pillars in the video.
I am an architect and not a structural engineer, so I concede competence in such matters to you guys. I am only voicing my opinion.
I have seen close shot photographs of the columns that failed in shear...the columns were POORLY reinforced! I don't just type what I'm not sure of. The pictures here ain't the only pictures in circulation. There are close shot precision pictures, not the poor quality ones here that ain't captured for forensic analysis purposes.
Quality of concrete ain't determined solely by destructive means, visual inspection can speak volumes of the composition and quality of the concrete. Experience plays a key role in this case.
Now, how do you expect such truss system to fail, other than the way it fell? That system lost stability at its support lines (CONNECTIONS), due to insufficient holding down bolts, and also poor anchorage (CLEARLY DEPICTED FROM THE PICTURES I SAW).
Again, you don't have sufficient knowledge of how the system works, that's why you ignorantly said it collapsed on its own. If this kind of system will fail, it's during installation or at full excitation. No amount of explanation of the behaviour of the system will suffice for you to have a clear grasp of an existing key structural concept.
Oh...you are even an architect, no wonder the misaligned use of terms. That aside, as an ARCHITECT, your opinion in structural forensic investigation doesn't really hold water.
The structural documents issued for that site was NOT from a competent consultant, and the supervision was done by highly incompetent individuals, who have no business whatsoever in a construction site.
U nailed it colleague!!!!!!! same were my analysis.
My brother, someone has to at least make some professional statements. The misleading and highly erroneous comments I was seeing here forced me to exercise a little patience to analyse the situation.
