PoliticsRe: Nairaland "oputa" Panel For Truth And Reconciliation by fstranger(op): 7:33pm On Nov 13, 2010
I may have mocked some groups in the past, when my group was attacked, indeed that was not right. However, after I toned that and attacked the leaders, people took that as an assault on their ethnic group. Case in point, my issue with Awolowo. I do not have a favorable opinion of Awolowo, but many of you Awoist took that as an attack on your people. There is a problem when you see people as the epitome of your ethnic group.

And I was only using anecdotal evidence. I do not consider my group superior to others. I have said time and time against that I respect the culture Yoruba and I am fan of your history and artwork. Don't see how I can be an ethnocentrist with such views. I even said I was admired by the fervour of Uthman dan Fodio as he created the Sokoto Caliphate. He was a leader who turned a backwards tribe into a powerhouse in West Africa.

Concerning the Ngwa, they are not an ethnic group, it is a fellow Igbo clan. There are clan rivalries that exist, so I would not consider them a separate ethnic group, because we are the same people. My clan used to be bitter enemies with the Ngwa, that is why I may have said some disparaging remarks. You still hear people saying that you cannot marry from that clan, because of such and such happened in the past.

Never have I said Igbos are superior to anyone. If you proof have back that I said that, please show me. I would be a fool to think my people are better than another people. It is un-Igbo to think that way, due to our egalitarian nature.

I am a proud Igbo man. Nothing more and nothing less. And I look through Igbo lens, because that is how I was raised, as an Igbo

@Kayci_d7

Yr arguments are nt strong, are u of the opinion that Achebe is better than the Nobel award, when he has gone for interviews conducted by the panel? Soyinka had a 3rd class from a Nigerian University, but he is a literary genius. If you think plays are easy try writing act 1 scene 1. Or why do you think Ahakespeare is revered?? Please let us not kid ourselves, Achebe is a good writer, but there are better writers all over the world.
Interview for what? It is well known that the Nobel committee never interviews a potential winner. Winning the prize is not like a job search. You people in Nigeria lazy around and concort ridiculous stories that have no basis whatsoever. I am quite amazed.

For your "third class" claim, where did he graduate from? Please let us know. I assume you must have seen his transcript for you to be that bold with your assertion, please could you tell me the number of As he has on it? How many courses did he complete in total before he was granted his B.A degree? And from which university did he graduate ? what year?

Soyinka was born on 13 July 1934, in the city of Abeokuta, Ogun State in Nigeria's Western Region (at that time a British dominion), as the second of six children of Samuel Ayodele Soyinka and Grace Eniola Soyinka. His father, whom he often refers to as S.A. or "Essay" in literalized form, was the headmaster of St. Peters School in Abẹokuta. Soyinka's mother, dubbed by him as "Wild Christian", owned a shop in the nearby market and was a political activist within the women's movement in the local community. His mother was Anglican, although much of the community followed indigenous Yorùbá religious tradition. Soyinka grew up in an atmosphere of religious syncretism, with influences from both Christianity and his culture's traditional beliefs. The home of the Soyinka family had electricity and radio (chiefly thanks to his father).

In 1940, after attending St. Peters Primary School, Soyinka went to Abẹokuta Grammar School, where he won several prizes for literary composition. In 1946 he was accepted by Government College in Ibadan, at that time one of Nigeria’s elite secondary schools. After the completion of his studies there, Soyinka moved to Lagos where he found employment as a clerk. During this time he wrote some radio plays and short stories that were broadcast on Nigerian radio stations. After finishing his course in 1952, he began studies at University College in Ibadan, connected with University of London. During this course he studied English literature, Greek, and Western history.

Later in 1954 Soyinka relocated to England, where he continued his studies in English literature, under the supervision of his mentor Wilson Knight at the University of Leeds. He became acquainted then with a number of young, gifted British writers. Before defending his B.A., Soyinka successfully engaged in literary fiction, publishing several pieces of comedic nature. He also worked as an editor for The Eagle, an infrequent periodical of humorous character. In a page two column in The Eagle, he wrote commentaries on academic life, often stingingly criticizing his university peers. Well known for his sharp tongue, he is said to have courteously defended, affronted and insulted female colleagues

He graduated from Leeds with an Upper Second Degree, and there is no truth whatsoever to the fable spread in certain quarters that Soyinka managed only a Third Class degree at Ibadan! Soyinka initially enrolled for graduate studies but soon turned his back on further university degrees. He fell in love with the young English girl Barbara who gave birth to his first son, Olaokun, born in November 1957. Soyinka eventually formalized his union with Barbara into his first marriage.

Why do you hate Yorubas so much?
And why do post untruths about them?
Also, what changes do you want to see on NL before you change your attitude towards Yorubas?

Pls, be honest with your answers, ok?

My sympathies go to the relations, families, friends and well wishers of those who have been offended at one time or the other over trivail issues bordering on tribalism and hatred for fellow Nigerians and non-Nigerians. My heart bleeds because of the senseless insults of some Nigerians by fellow misguided Nigerians, and non-Nigerians, over issues that can be settled using an honest approach and dialogue. I want to join voices with other Nairalanders who have called for an end to hostilities and hatreds between Awo haters and Unrepentant anti-Biafrans. This thread is dedicated to former, present and closet Tribalists, irrespective of past sins. This thread serves to bring all aggrieved parties together in an attempt to once and for all stamp out Tribalism on NL.

Under and by virtue of the powers conferred upon me by the Executive CEO of NL, Mr. Oluwaseun, and all other powers enabling me in this behalf, I do hereby declare open this important thread in orderto find the root cause of tribalism on NL and how we can, together, make NL a more perfect place for peaceful co-existence of every ethnic group.

I herebey declare this mother of all threads open. The Tribalism crisis here on NL is equivalent to a war e.g The Civil War. Like in all wars, you only know how the crisis will start but definitely not the course it will assume or how it would end. Therefore there should be immediate ceasefire on both sides and let genuine dialogue begin; and that should start right now.

Everyone is invited!

Exactly my point, you get angry when somebody randomly criticize your essence and yet it is your full time job here on NL. As for whom your mum is married to, I careless and do not wish to know, my point is you are not Nigerian and have no maral right to dish out hateful comments based on prejudiced bedtime stories you claim your step dad told you about a country you have never visited or have any practical experience of her people co-existence.
Don't even talk about having any views because obviously you don't, spewing hateful vitriols like a typical hateful African American gangster in the ghettos of America is not an opinion.
Besides, who cares about how many "virtual NL females" that likes you on cyberspace, like that's the real deal, the fact is whether you decide to make copious amount of post in every goddamn thread to be noticed or liked by "NL virtual females", nobody is competing with you for such frivolous tittle. The fact you even indulge in such shows that you need to get a real life outside of the bandwidth of NL, how childish! Finally, I wont even give you the pleasure of arguing Nigeria with you cos you know nada, continue ranting with the half-truths and distortion your Step dad wiki and google feed you with but the fact remain, that no matter how much you claim to be or know about the yoruba tribe, I know them more than you do and I am more yoruba than you can ever be even if your next step father is a yoruba Oba.
Haba.   .   . you don't have to stoop that low. You have no moral standing to make those comments.  You are essentially guity of the same crime you are accusing him. So therefore, you are NOT any better. So crawl back to the hole you came out of. You phcuxking idi.ot!
