Any competent lawyer will advise you that if you did not claim asylum at the point of entry now and have already begun attending classes, dropping out of school now to claim.asylum carries significant risks, especially as IRCC intensifies its crackdown on such abuses. the Canadian government has indicated the possibility of introducing new asylum laws, potentially within the 1 months, due to over 16,000 students dropping out of school last year to pursue asylum claims, which the government perceives as fraudulent.
16,000 just last year? Jesus! This is alarming.

My brother that is not my conclusion cos I don't any data to back it up. I'm just laying out some factors that could be an issue as i have seen around me. The reality is that the job market is tough at the moment but then some people are not also helping their case when the opportunity comes cos they aren't as good as they should be. So at the end of the day, it is a combination of different factors not just one.
It's good you clarified. Let no one run away with a "single story".

Your response highlights a common issue in the way we talk about the immigrant experience, especially within the Nigerian community. Often, when one or two people find success, it can lead to victim-blaming of the thousands who are facing difficulties, as if they aren’t doing enough or aren’t smart enough. This attitude is all too common and dismisses the real challenges that many immigrants face.
It’s important to celebrate success stories, but let’s not ignore the reality for the majority. The system can be unfair, and thousands of new immigrants genuinely struggle to find suitable jobs. But often, as Nigerians, we hide our struggles and celebrate small wins as though they reflect everyone’s experience in Canada. Your examples of a doctor or tech professional succeeding can feel like an insult to the many who are still struggling in silence and making huge effort and still could not get a much desire job or any level of financial freedom!
Thanks for re-affirming this. Sometimes I wonder if some people are just real estate agents trying to sell properties by using few examples to paint a picture that the dream of all immigrants is to work their a$$ off just to buy multifamily houses and 2030 cars.
The truth is, most professionals who left Nigeria to Canada just want to have a professional career and live a peaceful, comfortable life. Unfortunately, a large percentage of immigrants are unable to break into their desired career after 5 years, despite working so hard. A sharp contrast to what obtains in the neighbouring US who even have higher wages and lower housing costs. Let us admit that immigrants face serious challenges in Canada, and the job crises and underemployment are real! Stating that fact is not whining.
Boasting of 2/3 jobs or working day and night to make a living is not success, in my humble opinion. It was Tuco Benedicto Pacífico Juan María Ramírez in the movie "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" that asked "if you work for a living, why do you kill yourself working?"

Hi fam, please can someone anyone put me through on how to navigate stuff here in canada...so i came here about 6 months ago,and i have been job hunting ,nothing at all....i was in tech in nigeria and i havent been able to get anything.....can someone just help me or give me tips...now im considering nursing now,my background is microbiology but i graduated with a 3rd due to some circumstances,,,that was why i delved into tech in the first palce, now i have been unabke to find a job,can anyone give me advice or just connect me to some one well versed in this topic..thanks a lot
You touched on a few things,
1. Job hunting: The challenges of job hunting in Canada in recent years is widely known. However, there are jobs. You need to be more specific, tech is wide and accordingly it is the sector with the most job opportunities at the moment. Job search is like a full-time job these days, and every resume and cover letter must crafted like the best. There are also tons of posts on this thread that address navigating as a new comer. You may take time and go through as many previous pages as possible. Just off this you inquiry here, I'll advise that in your job applications you need to write more concisely and remove unnecessary information.

2. Going into nursing: Considering your background and experience, first thing off my head will be a diploma or certificate in health informatics or something related. This is purely because you have a microbiology degree and interest/experience in tech. You can see a variant of that in unis, colleges and polytechnics across provinces. It doesn't guarantee a quick job but it is solid with huge prospects. Nursing is also a good choice because you have the background. I must also add that since I have been here, I haven't seen an unemployed nurse (they may exist though I haven't met one). So it is something you'll do and start working immediately. If I were you, I wouldn't go for anything beyond 18-24 months period of study.

3. Funds: Whether you are jobhunting or studying, you need to feed and pay bills. So for any option, you need some form of income to be stable. For study, you can get some loan and grants that could be sufficient for a single student. That shouldn't stop you from casual, part-time or student jobs, so you'll be fine.

I wish you all the best! If you specify your area in tech and province, I believe more people can offer informed advice and I may also say more.

5k in which province..
Lol. The person must be putting in up to 30 hours overtime every week for the whole year. No wonder 'slump and die' is increasing rapidly within Naija medical workers abroad.

Any suggestions and hints will be appreciated
Wetaskiwin? Jesus Christ! Your friend could use Rentfaster+Wetaskiwin (maybe few houses are listed).
Just that it is a very small remote county, so the landlords would unlikely rent to someone abroad. But try!

Hello guys, response to this came back today and it was unsuccessful, I have attached the response below, I'll give it a break until whenever I have travel history to any other countries then maybe I'll try again, as at the time I sent this application the amount in my statements when converted was 21,000 Canadian dollars, so I may not buy the generic response on insufficient finances, but I'll just have to believe the counselor officer wasn't convinced I was gonna return and leave it that way till any other time I deem it necessary to apply, will keep observing in the forum to learn what I can improve on and see how I can put up a more solid application next time.
Personally, I would think that a return flight ticket could have been more impactful than No. 13.

But some people heartless in Canada. My brother was supposed to pay rent by June 30, and we're still trying to arrange the money to send to him as he's not working yet. Yesterday, July 7, his roommate threw him out and rented the room to another person who will move in the next day, in a shared bedroom... just a 7-day rent delay. That's terrible!!
Lol. You fail to fulfill an agreement you signed, you are given a full week of grace, you didn't meet up, probably not the first time, then you turn around and call another heartless. A lot of people don't understand how things work. For that rent to be paid, it means someone else would have to pay for him, or all of them are behind on rent - risking eviction. Who is to be called heartless here?

The terrible thing there is the mindset of entitlement and self-inflicted victim-hood.

yes, 250 cad is almost 280k in naira . we currently paying almost 570k monthly as 500canadian dollars since 2 month now for my brother house rent ...Canada is not as rosy as it painted online by many blogger .my brother telling me many student in same category as work is currently hard. l do not understand how person will be send money from Nigeria to Canada to pay house rent!
No matter how it is painted by bloggers, nobody ever painted that rent is $250 per month. In fact, 500 CAD/month is very very cheap around Toronto.
When they said you should have proof of fund, that's what they mean. How can you be lamenting sending money from Nigeria in just 2 months? What was his POF for? Anyway, it's very normal now for an international student to stay 6 months to 1 year in Canada without getting a job.
Best of luck!

Dear Nairaland,
Kindly assist with this information,

I am a student and I have 2 kids(3 years and a year old).

I have gotten my study permit and they both got visitors visa.
How do I convert it to Visitors Record or study permit to allow them go to Pre school or Primary school.

Kindly advise for those with experience
1. You will handle all these when you arrive Canada. They are simple processes you shouldn't be bothered about.
2. Your kids are not up to school age, they will attend pre-school. Pre-school doesn't need study permit.
3. You would have finished your program before the older child attains kindergarten age. Lol. You have lots of time.

Hi everyone, please, I arrived in Ontario, Canada exactly one month ago as a student and I currently stay in Vaughan and school in Toronto. Please I need group links for Nigerians in Vaughan and the North York areas. It's been really difficult navigating settling in as I haven’t been able to meet other Nigerians as much as necessary. Please I need help and guidance.
The school would have resources and advisors to help you settle in and get around a few things. For meeting Nigerians, while there may be Whatsapp groups, best bet might be church (like RCCG). Best wishes in your endeavor.

Hi Guys,

Please is anyone here currently residing in Alberta Calgary or Edmonton?

Please, I am curious to know how to go about obtaining a fully funded government grant for studies for someone who is a newcomer in Canada (i.e under PR)
Is there a body one can contact?
This depends on what you want to study. There's hardly a "fully funded" government grant for studies. You could easily get a student loan, which would have some grants included, but you would pay back your loan. There are also very good scholarships for high-flyers, if you were talking about research (MSc and PhD). The first step is to gain admission and start.

It was PPR guys !!!
So me and @WhizzyG went to receive PPR same time, same day from same station.

1. Timeline
Express Entry process simplified for me - March 2018 (by my friend in Canada)
Swung into action - March 2018
ECA by WES for PA and Spouse - March/April 2018
IELTS - March 2018 (flunked, L7.5); April 2018 (passed).
.
.
Waiting for CRS to drop
.
.
ITA - Oct. 15, 2018
Medicals - Nov. 12, 2018 (IOM Abuja)
AOR - Nov. 15, 2018
Med Passed/BIL - Dec. 17, 2018
Biometrics done and updated - Dec. 20, 2018
.
.
Waiting patiently
.
.
ADR - May 9, 2019 (Educational/Personal activity of spouse 2016 to 2018)
Typed response to ADR on paper, signed, scanned and uploaded - May 10, 2019.
Profile updated and ADR Not Applicable - May 15, 2019

PPR Mail - May 16, 2019. Came in 11:35pm, seen early hours of May 17, 2019.

Passport couriered May 17, 2019. With delivery truck as I type.

2. What is different
A. I applied with non-accompanying spouse: In reason for non accompanying, I told them that our CRS no reach with accompanying. So it's the only way that we could get ITA. Yeah, that straightforward. I guess it has no effect on the processing.

B. Half of my POF came in a few days before submission. It was proceeds from the business I run with my brother, so my brother transferred the money as a gift to avoid unnecessary complication of submitting business papers and all that. But then I didn't submit a gift deed. My brother just wrote a formal letter that I'm not expected to pay back the money. So, I think gift from a relative listed in your application must not be accompanied with gift deed. All these affidavit and court papers may not be necessary.

C. All the POF were pushed to Treasury Bills. They all matured before PPR. I didn't contact IRCC to say that I'm reinvesting or keeping the cash or updating POF with CSE. No need for stressing oneself. If IRCC needs updated POF, they'll let you know.

3. Why leaving Nigeria.
Nigeria is a country to leave.

4. For our Express Entry Nairaland family
I wish to thank you all for the help, information, positive spirit and all then helpful tips. This is a place to be. I can't be thankful enough for the wealth of information in different parts of this thread. I'm glad my PPR will be on this thread Part 8.
Apologies also for announcing this PPR late. I've been in a remote location with limited internet access.

5. For those awaiting PPR or at one step of this process or the other.
Be strong and positive. You must be patient. Everybody wants to get PPR in one month but it can't be so. Some get so quickly and others get around 6 months or more. One thing is certain: if you have everything you claimed and provide genuine documentations to back them, IRCC MUST give you PR visa. It's a matter of time.
YOU WILL CELEBRATE SOON!

My PPR twin mate @WhizzyG, congratulations once again! Warn your dog o!

By the way Visa Office VO is our beloved Ottawa
NOC . . . emmm ermm . . . I don forget be that o.

To God be the glory.

Happy Sunday all. I am the PA in my family application. Our POF will be provided by spouse. Because of this we have decided to provide letter of employment for him in order to avoid ADR later on. Now my questions are:

1. Must the letter be in CIC format? What if the job description isn't included? Will that pose a problem?

2. On another matter, my FD certificate shows an address in which I lived in more than 10years ago. Should I go to the bank to change the address to my current address? Or leave as it is? Thank you.
I feel No.1 will further complicate the application. If the POF is in his account, all he needs do is print a statement of account and write a letter that you have full access to the fund. He may notarize the letter. Alternatively, he could transfer the money to your account and you accompany the transaction with an LOE. Job reference letter and employment letter usually have no connection with POF.

2. If I were you, I would leave the address that way. But if it's something they can quickly change, go ahead and change it. It will make you sleep better. I think the bank just needs ID and utility bills bearing the current address.

If by tomorrow morning there's no update, I advise you increase your POF slightly until the next profile becomes eligible. Just in case there's a draw tomorrow.

Hello my Nairaland family, Thanks to all for the good work and wealth of information on this platform. I have really benefited a lot here.

Here is my enquiry...
I will like to know if any one has information about file transfers to Etobicoke visa office? It seems my file has been transferred there and I am just wondering why. I am a US resident and my application was initially with CIO, sydney, so from past trends I felt it will be transferred to ottawa or remain with CIO.

I am also looking at ordering GCMS notes too(Aor Oct12).

Any info about transfers to Etobicoke visa office will be highly appreciated . Thanks all.
Sounds like a new VO. I never heard of this. Good to know they are having more places to move files for faster processing.
Once it's not AVO, know that they are fast. cheesy

GOOD(XMAS) News! If you are having your P.O.F account with GTB, then you don't need them to print that long list of your six(6) months Statement of Account for you anymore.

This you can now do via their "Internet Banking" and have it instantly downloaded to you laptop(signed and duly stamped) without stress at all.

That way, you are completely relieved from the stress of having to scan again just like me! The only document you require from them now is your Reference Letter.

Private chat me if you need the info.......
Good one.
Some have said it here and also the previous part. In fact, that is what I did. The interesting thing is that the downloaded statement looks beautiful.

AOR: Sept 3, 2018

MY ADVICE;
1. Don’t lie, Canada runs checks before and after you get your PPR.
2. Try and make your LOE as simple and straight to the point as possible
3. I used a pdf creator to arrange my documents, I also named each document with my name express entry number and what document it was e.g Lagbaja LOE 12345789.pdf
4. One thing I have realised is the easier you make it for an Officer to read your application the quicker it gets approved.

I thank God for everything.
Massive Congratulations my brother!
