I want to venture into melange production. I have been having challenges.
I believe melange takes 12 weeks i.e. 3 months to mature?
From experience what is usually the average weight of melange (12weeks age) at harvest assuming the fish are reared in a plastic tank with stagnant water?
Please how much does it cost to feed 1 fingerling to melange stage? How many kg of feed will 1 fingerling consume to reach melange stage? What will be the average weight at harvest?
How many weeks do I feed with floating feed before switching to sinking feeds?
I have four 1 x 1m plastic tanks which can take 1000 litres of water. What stocking density do you advise?

Average weight is 400 grams , cost about 300 to 350 to raise 1 fingerling to melange depending on the type of feed given, 5 weeks floating 7 weeks sinking to cut cost.(good sinking feed). maximum for 1000 liters (150). Note melange is good for large stocking like 3k up.

To be honest those fishes I see in the pond is not up to juveniles, they are rather post fries. What size of feed are u giving them?

Depends on the number of pond u want to build. As a newbie start small so u can learn the trade. 10,000 fishes will require about 4 million plus to feed to maturity.

For me, what I used is plantain sucker. fill the pond to the very level you want. Cut the sucker and put inside the pond. watch out for mosquito Larves, once they are many your pond is good to go.

or you can make use of lime, get like 30 of it for each, cut and put them inside the pond.

The answers we want are; when did you start the use of the feed, is there any negative impact on your fishes i.e. did they die,shrink or become diseased(before you are in any hurry to come into conclusion, NOTE WITH FOREIGN FEED SOME OF THIS COULD HAPPEN under poor water mangement and over feeding.

what kilogram did you feed and what was the result, you dont expect to feed 500grams and expect to see a kilogram fish, even the foreign feeds wont give you that.

Did you start at fingerlings/juveniles in using the feed in question, what is the reputation of the breeder you bought your fish feeds from?

Was there any prior relationship(business) between those for or against the feed in question that the forum dont know?

When this answers are given by both parties; the real issues can be determined by those that choose to decifer accurately

I am a first timer in fish farming. I have been making use of Coppens. And so far, my fish have been doing great. I bought some local feeds on this thread (Name withheld), but I'm scared of administering it to my fish. I don't want to tell stories that touch. The neutral persons (4 of them in number) that have used this same feed told me emphatically that they did not observe any impact on their fish as claimed by the producers, marketers and promoters of the said feed.

The only persons who have told me good stories about this feed are the distributors, and you know their opinions cannot be unbiased.

Is there anyone who has bought and used any of the local feeds advertised on this thread, please come and share your experiences with us. Neutral persons please.

there are antibiotics sold for fish aquaceryl etc. and the human tetracycline is also ok for use. though I don't know the size of your pond, what type of pond i.e. concrete or earthen etc, if not earthen use 4-6 capsules depending on water volume. Essential that your pond has enough oxygen and this you could easily achieve by doing dripping or changing water. It is also crucial to know that the effect can disappear, but you should continue a good water mgt. If you can lay your hands on aquapro, it keeps your fishes healthy and give meaningful growth

Hi, fellow and great farmers, i am sure we have all noticed the sudden increase in prices of all commodities in the country in recent times, not to talk of the incessant fuel crisis that also has negative impacts on running our farms on a day to day basis. .
Directly and indirectly, it has affected fish farming and farmers as a whole.
In view of this, it is necessary that fish farmers increase the price of their fish to be able to meet up with the increase in cost of living and cost of farming in Nigeria . Usually the price of fish (1kg ), averagely sells at N500 per kilo in Lagos on our farms. This price has be static for so long despite the rising costs of farming. Sometimes its even less than N500 per kilo, it all depends on market factors at any point in time.
Nothing stops us from selling bulk sales at N600 per kilo to market women! Yes.... This will cushion the effects of increased cost of production. We can only do this with one voice (as farmers) and with deep resolve.
Also farmers should try as much as possible to reduce the cost of farming to the barest minimum so as to further widen their profit margin and also try to increase their turn over rate and farm capacities.
Let us not labour in vain. We should also be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour and be able to live as comfortably; even more comfortably than people with white collar jobs. REMEMBER THAT NO FARMER, NO NATION.

What kind of pond do you use? Earthen or Concrete?
If concrete, how do you manage water pollution?

I use concrete with no water pollution, though I use the pelleted magnet feed.

The water is straight from the biofilter.... The filtration system was built personally. It's a two step unit.... First step is solids removal( feed and surface dirt), second step is removal of finer particles and nitrification. Filtration media comprise of bio balls and other materials.

The size of your system should largely determine your biofilteration requirements..... I have about 14,000 liters in circulation with a 300liter capacity biofilter.... My growbed complements the filtration activity by reducing nitrate level. For example... I have a pH of about 8 in door and 7.2 in the white tank outside....
