First abuse to engine occurs when the coolant hose ruptured, the car overheated.

First Overheating most likely did not cause any damage to the engine, but the initial procedure used to tackle this problem was to force the coolant temp down by removing the thermostat, and running cooling fans directly at high speed.

Coolant temp for most vehicles, cycle between 90deg celsius and 104degs (past boiling point)

The toyota in question cycles a 90-96 cycle.

Coolant is used in the place of water by vehicle manufacturer's. One of the qualities of [b]good coolant[b] is that it goes not boil at a 100deg celcius it's boiling point has been tweaked to much higher temp to handle higher temp values.

1st abuse caused a ripple effect in the engines slow death. By lowering the coolant temp, they also lowered the engine oil temp too.

Cold temperatures are on the opposite end of the spectrum and cause the oil to thicken. Conventional lubricants contain paraffin’s which cause them to thicken in cold temperatures as the paraffin begins to merge. As the engine is started, the thickened oil can leave working parts unprotected for as long as five minutes while the oil warms to a temperature that allows it to flow throughout the engine. unprotected moving parts will cause contamination in the engine,
filtration removes most of the contaminants, some of these persist and are left to circulate within the oil. This is where a high quality engine oil filter is necessary, sadly from calculations filters used were about N500.

Sadly engine oil changes on this engine where done on a monthly basis irrespective of mileage covered, there where months vehicle would have covered mileage which would exceed the threshold of engine oil protection, engine oils and works to absorb and protect your engine from contaminants. Over time, however, it reaches its capacity of absorption and instead of carrying away contaminants, it deposits them on the engine surfaces and in all the other parts where it circulates. Instead of lubricating and reducing friction, the oxidized sludge causes a buildup of heat in the engine. Engine oil functions as a coolant to some extent, but oxidized sludge acts as the opposite.

Now this brings the question, what is sludge.

Oil sludge or black sludge is a solid or gel in engie oil caused by the oil gelling or solidifying,

in this case it was worsened by the driving habits of the owner, in the morning, he covered very short distances to work which is unhealthy for engine life.

Also after the close of work he was stuck in traffic most of the way back home, (another recipe for lowering engine life)

Finally He used the cheapest engine oils money could buy.

With the combination of abuse, vehicle still carried on for a long time, (testament to toyota builds) the the engine must have developed a sludge buildup, but did not cause an immediate threat because the sludge was sticking to the walls of the engine and other parts, it was not hanging loose, the coolant passages had already started corroding, but did not show any signs of leaks because there was no pressure on the coolant system (In effect the water was sort of sitting in a bucket but the holes where on the cover of the bucket)

The engine was also very in-efficient, and burnt up more fuel.

the reason for the added fuel consumption is centered around ECU programing.

Every car once started in the cold position will receive instructions for higher Rev, and longer pulses to the injectors to enable the engine warm up real quick, this is necessary especially in sub-zero conditions to ensure engine does not stall.

The first 10-15mins of a cold start should be enough to raise the temp of the coolant from -x to between 90-104degrees celcius.

After this the engines rpm will return back to about 700-800RPM and pulses to injector normalize.

Now in the case of this engine, the temp never rose to 90-96deg, infact for a better part of its life, it was stuck at around 65deg celcius. The effect of this is the engine ecu will continue over fueling and keep the RPM higher than usual levels.

To combat this behaviour the roadside tech would have tried Bringing down the RPM manually by blocking off the IACV with a Foreign material to ensure he gets a desired rpm set manually from the butterfly. in doing a manual rpm set, the rpm would be unable to adjust automatically to expected load e.g the a/c next would be a wave of vibrations when ever the a/c is engaged or when the headlamps are set to full beam, or when the steering is turned at any angle.

Trust the road side Mech, he always has a way to counter 1 abuse with another, they incorporate an electronic valve and wire it to the compressor signal, and the vacuum side to the intake, the smart ones connect the air inlet side to the intake air hose before the airflow meter to reduce the hissing sound and avoid a lean mix code, the not so smart ones leave it open.

A combination of all this abuse is Recived by the catalytic converter, it receives Nigerias adulterated bad fuel a rich mixture, black sooth and ultimately gets blocked.

Well again the roadside has a solution to this again there's the smart one, and the outright foo.l. The smart one takes out the blocked catalyst and sells, the foolish one takes out the old catalyst, Sells and installs a wire mesh to avoid the hollow sound. Reminds me of ogyrt who has advertised every abuse I just mentioned here as a way of fixing a car

The effects of overfueling also cause what is called bore wash, which is when fuel from the injectors mixes with engine oil intended to lubricate the cylinder walls and causes poor lubrication and thereby causing rapid wear of rings pistons and Cylinder walls.

Hello all. Here this story please. So I just finished my nysc and I've been sitting around doing nothing. My Brother told me to look for a clean Nigerian used car of around 700-750k that I can use for Uber and pay him back the exact amount from my earnings then keep the car. This is a huge opportunity since we don't have much money. The problem is 1. Getting a reliable car for that amount is HARD!!! 2. I don't know Abuja road too well, can I rely on the map for a few weeks till I master the routes? 3. I'm thinking of a Honda civic 2006. Advice me please!

I have a little time on my hands, so let's breakdown what happened to this vehicle.

near Perfect vehicle imported into the County @ 65,000miles.

Had its all its oil changes done using 20w50 engine oil.

Engine oil changes where done in 1month intervals irrespective of distance covered.

Had its first sever overheating around the same mileage.

Had Fans connected directly and Thermostat removed

Had the Catalytic converter Removed.

Coolant had been lost in the first Pipe rupture, normal water running in the system

Basically engine was running with temp values around ~ 65deg (what I usually see) celsius which is below engine running temp for about 5years.

my brother even if they default, there is nothing you can do to the guarantor , irrespective of the agreement signed.
