Tonyjon,
Please let your friend exercise patience or even forget the fidelity stuff. The brokers would have transferred the accounts as you changed if it was that easy. However because I hear it is not that easy (records in different places) they have to open a new cscs account and trade afresh.
So the suggestion by Pumping777 might not be very smooth. Also the stock brokers usually have a week to close their IPO accounts and send it to the issuing house which effectively gives your friend a weeks grace to wait for the new cscs.

Ben0524,
Cscs stands for Central Securities Clearing System I think it is the body that stores your stock/share particulars such that there are no sharp practices by the brokers etc. For the rest, you just have to visit investopia and do some research.

EPS earnings per share
Is the total earnings divided by number of outstanding shares of a coy
A high EPS indicates good earnings and a growing coy making profit especially if it is better than the previous year, and the number of share has not been diluted by additional shares. Folks in this thread talk about it alot
Yes one can have another broker but a new cscs account may have to be opened for you. I suggest you get to the office and complain or ask for a change of the account officer most broking firms are improving their services.
Price may also go low in your favor so don't complain too much,

Krisbobo,
Try APT securities and funds ltd. their minimum opening balance is 250k.
Once you get a hang of the system and open the online account orders are carried out on time.
Cheers

Hi all, especially d gurus in da house- u know yourselves grin

I've been following, or is it STALKING this thread daily, since page 89.

How do u explain UNTL's price gain- in spite of what has befallen them i.e liquidation?

Secondly how does capital appreciation of a stock impact on the profitability or liquidity of a company. someone tried explaining it a few days back, but it didn't jell. For instance, FCMB appreciated by 329% so how did/does that put money into their pocket?

Thanks
In additon to Easimoni's note, Money comes into the shareholders pocket as the shareholder is entitled to dividends, whever the coy decides to do so, bonus share etc. when the coy decides to do so.  Daily prices rise and fall according to demand for the shares on the stock exchange.  That is supposed to be backed by strong fundamentals.  The share holder can also make money if he buys i.e. when the price is low then sell when the price appreciates.
Some folks buy a into a coy and dont sell just continue accumulating shares and use the dividends.  Others dont want any dividend they just buy and sell.
UNTL buyers either are misinformed or they have some hidden information about the resurrection of the coy and are mopping up the shares.
Hope this helps

Joining the list is Crusader Insurance Plc which said that it has secured the approval of its shareholders to raise more money from the capital market It would be recalled that Crusader Insurance Plc was one of the insurance companies which public offer last year was successful.

The company had said that the new move was part of its growth strategy which would enable it pursue its diversification project into other financial services.

The approval, which was part of the major resolutions at the company's 37th Annual General Meeting, held in Lagos, included the resolution to increase the authorized share capital from N4 billion to N5 billion by the creation of two billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each raking with existing shares of the company.

Shareholders also gave them the nod to issue by way of public offer for subscription and or right issue at a date and upon terms and conditions to be determined by the directors as well as to merge with or acquire the shares, assets, liabilities and undertakings of any financial services company or allied businesses subject to such terms and conditions as may be determined by the board

FELLAS ANY THOUGHTS OR ADDED INFO ABOUT THIS?
Where from guy?
This sure will increase number of shares,

@samstone4

you are not wrong. but when u do buy in the secondary market, your money goes directly to the former owner who probably gave money directly to the company when they did an IPO, so in a roundabout way, you have given money to the company to do business and they will share the profit with you at the end of the year.

even though you have not given money to the company but you own a piece of the company (represented by your shareholding) and can therefore lay claim to the residual assets of the company at the end of the yr.
Thanks Walcom,
Your explanation is cool. Have nothing to add,

pumping777 and wanajo, u guys seem to be stockmarket gurus, please enlighten me on this capital market trend, it seems to be invogue at the moment what,s the prospect? do u see hope for earlier investors? don,t u think there will be collapse at the end of the day? what does the future hold for it? The concept is bacoming more alarming everyday especially the banking sector coming out for ipo everyday, what do u think will be the end result for Nigerians, profit or loss ? sorry i must be very skeptical because money isn,t easy to come by. lipsrsealed
When you buy shares of a coy, you are actually giving that coy your money to do business afterwhich they share the profit with you.
First bank has had good will of many Nigerians and have been giving returns consitently. Cadbury even with the negative news have been faithful to their investors for at least 10 years.
IBTC Equity funds is an invetment bank with over 50% of their investments in the stock exchange, ARM, Cashcraft funds, Coral growth funds etc all invest in this stock market (Investing in good BLUE CHIP coys) for at least 5 years and have been giving returns on investement,
So what you need to do is to buy these coys that reward their share holders and see your money grow. If you can take risks then trade on the exchange,
When the market crashes its usually the coys without good fundamentals that go down, hardest.

It is the lazy farmer that says am not going out to the field cos there is a lion out there.

2008 is still far so softle softly. Many things can still happen.

Based on what I know now, Dunlop will be a good candidate especially at a price of about 2.50.

Flour Mills is also solid.

Depending on actions in the petroleum marketing sector, I am looking seriously at OandO. Next year may just be their year.

May and Baker is also on my list. Same for Nigerian German which is a very good stock by my reckoning.

However, lets wait and see 2008 first. Our time are in HIS hands.
Good point but the whole idea is to look ahead and strategically postion oneself for the new year,
Not a financial guru but from what i read about the budget, then manufacturing coys should smile properly, some banks will see huge turn around.
Insurance will settle out then the top guys will stand out.
It also speaks doom for any coy that has not repositioned itself.
I have 5 sectors only
1. Insurance
2. Banking
3. Manufacturing
4. Petroleum marketing
5. More Nigerians will buy cars standard of living is going to improve and any sector that services that will see growth - Dunlop, RTBriscoe may be healthcare
6. (Bonus) Real estate
My ideas,

Peterside never believed in the consolidation exercise. He tried to halt it but like a moving train, Soludo pressed on. He still want to practice only investment banking. Not interested in retail banking at all. Rather unfortunately for Chartered, the ECO-Chartered planned merger did not hold. Hence they could only go the way of IBTC. Peterside simply cashed out by selling to Standard Bank. He is tired of the Nigerian Banking environment. He was basically left behind.

He is no longer the MD but now chairman of the new bank. Same what TM Mbu was the chairman of Stanbic! Figurehead!!!
So where does that keep the share holders,
I have faith in the Atedo man, guess i also have to watch Presco though he doesn't seem to be high up in management.

Nigerian economy can never develop without the manufacturing sector contributing tremendously and the manufacturing sector is the most important sector in every economy( every sector of the economy should run pari pasu).
The rate at which the banking sector is raising money, it will be very difficult for other sectors of the economy to develop. I think CBN and SEC just have to wake up and do something before it's too late.
One of the key advantages of the banks is that they are financially adept so they can play the market better than the other sectors, The competition is getting unheallthy i think. Just hope the 2008 budget is implemented well so we don't have more UNTL's closing because of high cost of manufacturing,
Power has to be affordable

As per the banks business plans, you fine tune based on current realities. The banks can now see the opportunity in being big so they don't want to waste time. You you do, you will get swallowed like IBTC.
I also think IBTC are "tired" of doing biz or their model is not strong because I cant understand how they run a top investment arm like IBTC and could not read the market trends to allow themselve to be swallowed.
I hope the Investement farm is still vibrant.

Thanks for the post

All GURU's,

I need your advice urgently. I had access to some short-term funds and I bought into UBA at =N=53 a few months ago with the expectation that the new shares would not be listed during their last financial year which ended in September. I have read lately that new share have been listed and new shareholders will partake in any payoffs e.g. dividends, etc from the last financial year which ended September 2007.

With the new listing E.P.S has droped to around =N=2.044 based on a projection of =N=23.5 bln PAT for 2007 and 11,496,779,980 outstanding shares (source:nigeriansecurities.com). Nine months result was =N=17.1 bln. At the time I purchased UBA E.P.S was around =N2.66k which made me project a share price of over =N=66 at P.E. of 25.

Given the current situation, do you think UBA is bad news in the short-term. I have to liquidate my investement within the next two months because I require the funds for some other commitments that cannot wait. UBA should anounnce results around end year/January 2008. Where do you GURU's see UBA peaking? I clearly feel that I may have projected wrongly. If I sell now, I will loose around 7% (including all commissions). By the way, we are talking 8-digits invested in UBA. My fear is that year end results might not beat projections which means UBA is currently trading at near peak price factoring in some sentiments and thus has little headroom. It bothers me that its stock price has hovered around =N=50 - 53 for several months now.

Wanaj0, Easimoni, Pumping777, Roughcut, Yodiyokun, et al please, please look into your crystal balls and give me your spin. Many Thanks.
With this 9 month result of 17billion, then cut the loss.  I dont have any other info and even if they out perform their 23.5 billion target, that result will be seen next year.  So as you need the funds back soon, then cut the looses, or if you can fund it by some other means just reduce your exposure by say 1/2.  All the best
Cheers

Any CHELLARAMS shareholder herehuhhuh?
Am wondering why you are interested in Chellarams Wanaj0.  Share the news,

From what i have seen on their web site and my little knowledge of the Lagos market at least they should be making huge profit,  because they are marketing abi distributing all kinds of products.  Close to a conglomerate.  No definite focus which I think isn't too good sha.
But they are shrouded in some mystery no financials on the web site which would make me not interested in them until they get a bit more open about what they are doing.

They sure are a coy to watch

This thread is amazing me Wonda!!! 4 pages in one day, do i need to be reading 1/2 daily, folks una too much.

I noticed that UBA is quietly strategizing, postioning and waiting to happen with good results and buying up stockbroking firms.
However i believe this is time for the Insurance sector if they quickly settle all the merger and court brouhaha.

Manufacturing coys are next with the new budget giving serious attention to power,

Sorry I was talking of UBN.  Warning note folks still see UBN as a "slow" coy lumbering giant sort of, so thread with caution.

C and I those guys are in for a good time now that they are operating from their own property and taking sides with suzuki.  Sure has hidden potential.  For me am in the nearest future eyeing the insurance (law union/IEI may be UNIC); petroleum marketing and manufacturing sectors. The manufacturing sector should all turn around if all the IPP and gas powered factories function properly.

Dunlop,
Some good news about it. Think it the nation see: http://www.thenationonlineng.com/dynamicpage.asp?id=36374
Their new factory is completed so folks are expecting a new lease of life.
Also more folks are making money to buy cars, tyres would be needed.  Problem is the loose borders which allows tyres come.

By the way question for all
wITH ALL THESE  BANKS GOING TOWARDS GDR's what is the likelihood of making good returns judging form the effect of GDR's on a strong bank like GTB,
Are we not opening up to credit crunches?

Thanks Yodiyokun,
Then we'll just live with Dangote that way

Will recommend Dangote based on fundamentals. But you will need to beg the man to stop this quarterly dividend payment!!!!!!

BAGCO is solid but we need to wait for the prospectus. Go for Flour Mills. They are also a well diversified company.

Longman is attractive. Not so enamoured with Beta Glass. If NAFDAC should go ahead with the threat then beta Glass is toast.
Is GTB still giving 1/2 yearly dividends?
I see Dangote changing strategy soon.  The coy does command some presence though hope they keep making the huge profit they are making.

what do you think about capital oil plc?please any avaliable info on this coy will be appreciated.just want to know if this is god for long term and if they have prospect?
motai,
though i dont have info about the company because there is scanty info online and stockbrokers with online web pages dont do second tiers securities however i have a few questions why would you go to capital oil?
Is it becaus you are looking for small cap coys or just small funds?
My suggestion is invest in sectors which you can easily sell when wish (liquid stocks).  If their head office is in Ikeja and they deal in petroleum products (see http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/product-compint-0000503031-page.html or http://www.mbendi.co.za/orgs/ce48.htm) then they are not known and are not major players,

What do you guys have to say as per these companies:

1. African Paint plc, Penny Stock

2. Standard Alliance Ins. Plc

3. Grommac plc.

Please, urgent reply is needed.

Peace.

Tonyjon,
All three stocks mentioned are stocks which in my opinion will roll over in the LONG term.  Stand alliance might break even but there are not a top ins coy,  not even in the top 5.
Grommac an agric coy is not in the top 3 so chances are that no quality control nor good news yet.
You can go for African paint but its a low capitalization stock.
Yes if the tide turns they will be hot stock but they are so iliquid except standard alliance which is in insurance,
Cant even recommend any of the three

Thanks dollarmani,
I also try to find out who owns the company, and what they do. Dr. Shonekan through his managers Volker securities owns a good part of UNIC they are into health insurance majorly meaning that they would grow well (make profit) if they can make us Nigerians get more health insurance conscious like in the Uk etc.  Aside from that they would be along term investment because Nigeria is heading that way ultimately.
However insurance coys holding many oil coy accounts WAPIC for instance are good as oil coys pay good premuims what i dont understand is why they are not performing too well,
Hope this helps

Good speculating people,
Yes oh Tmoni try and sell if you can b/c the price will go below 9.10 the NSE can get bearish when it wants to.
If you do sell b4 it goes below your cost price then take the profit.  WEMA does have the ability to pick up again though like Wanaj0 I will wait till it gets close to when the next set of results will be posted b4 picking them up again.
Hope they are getting their books really clean.
