While Nigerians await the state-by-state breakdown of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), it is great to see that the Lagos State government has gone ahead to calculate its own estimated GDP. The move by the state is not surprising considering it has been in the forefront of economic development in the country. The state currently has one of the best and most complete economic statistics in the country. The state’s GDP figures released in September 2012 provide some interesting insights into the Lagos economy. The state has a GDP figure put in excess of N12 trillion or $81 billion as of 2010. Its economic size is about 35.6 percent of Nigeria’s 2010 GDP but a significant 62.3 percent of Nigeria’s non-oil GDP. However, on the African continent, Lagos State GDP figures rank fourth below Cairo ($145 billion), Johannesburg ($110 billion), and Cape Town ($103 billion). The figures show that the Lagos State GDP is higher than 14 of the 51 states in the United States of America. It is also estimated to be bigger than the GDPs of 22 of the 27 states in Brazil, and higher than 42 individual states in Africa, including Kenya with a GDP of $66 billion, Ghana with a GDP of $61.97 billion, and Tanzania with a GDP of $58.44 billion. Seven different sectors dominate economic activities in Lagos State, led by manufacturing which, interestingly, contributes 29.60 percent of the state’s GDP figures. Road transport follows closely contributing an average of 26.47 percent of economic activities in the state. Other sectors in order of dominance include building and construction (19.60 percent); wholesale and retail (8.39 percent); telecommunications (3.71 percent); financial institutions (3.51 percent); and real estate (2.01 percent). The seven sectors account for 93.39 percent of economic activities in the state. The Lagos State Bureau of Statistics also breaks down the state’s GDP based on sectors. Livestock is the biggest economic activity in the agricultural sector. This is closely followed by forestry, and then fisheries which is about half the size of the livestock sector. Crop production is almost insignificant in the agricultural sector, contributing just 0.004 percent of economic activities. Road transport is the giant in the room in the transportation sector in Lagos State, making up more than 90 percent of economic activities in the sector. The road transport sector is only slightly smaller than manufacturing. Manufacturing and road transport activities actually make up an average 56 percent of all economic activities taking place in Lagos. This explains the Lagos State government’s emphasis on road transport infrastructure within the state as both sectors actually feed on each other. The roads need manufacturing goods and passenger traffic while manufacturing needs the roads to move goods from production centres to the market. The financial services sector of the Lagos State economy is dominated by financial institutions, with the insurance sector almost a negligible player in the sector. Insurance sector’s contribution to economic activities in Lagos State stands at just 0.30 percent compared to 3.51 percent by financial institutions. In the communications sector, telecommunications dominates, with broadcasting and postal services making marginal contribution (0.03 percent). Under utilities, electricity dominates, but it contributes just an insignificant 0.47 percent of economic activities in Lagos State, a reflection of the challenges faced in the sector in the country. The contribution by the water sector is even more insignificant at just 0.03 percent. In a more ideal situation, these two sectors would be ranking among the highest contributors to economic activities because they are essential to modern living. Unfortunately, this is not the case here. The negligible contribution of these sectors hides the strong growth potential of the Lagos State economy if both sectors are repositioned to play their proper role in economic activities. Currently, the NBS is compiling GDP figures for about six states of the federation. Ahead of the release of these figures, which was expected in March 2013, BusinessDay research will soon be releasing its report on the states of the Nigerian federation. The report is an in-depth analysis of the macroeconomic environment and fiscal plans of Nigeria’s 36 states and Abuja. It shows what the states are going to spend and how they are going to spend it. It is also a deep analysis of the financial profile of each state, showing internal revenue projections and history, debt overhang, projections and sustainability, projected expenditure-to-consumption ratios, and major projects in each state. Due to non-availability of the GDP figures for the 36 states and Abuja, BusinessDay Research will be using NBS figures on consumption patterns in the states as a proxy for GDP figures. The report is an invaluable guide to anyone seeking to do business with or in the states and also to state governments wanting to know how their expenditure plans and macroeconomic environment compare competitively with other states and to the needs of the states. http://businessdaynigeria.com/examining-lagos-state-gdp-figures |
How has that completed the construction of the SNB? How has that improved the lives of the ordinary citizens of Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Obosi, Ihiala, Aguata,Uli, Abagana, Alor, Atani, Nkpor, Umuoji and Umunachi? We, the people of SW Nigeria have decided not to focus on the number of our sons and daughters that sit at the FEC meetings but the number of community based and life enriching projects that sit on our soil |
5,500 passengers weekly ![]() Other train services move ten times that in one minute. Does this call for celebration? Is this the same train service a N'Lander once had a gruesome travel experience with? Tha Lagos Blue Line plans to move 400,000 passengers daily and a projected 5,500 passengers daily is enough for some brain dead people to start dancing azonto? Wake me up when I can travel from Lagos to Kano on train in 4-5hours. Till then, this, to me is a shame |

Once again, Lagos proves that it is a centre of excellence, political sophistication and a clear leader. Other states will now start scrambling to register their tourism boards |

kaorama: This should be no too much arguement about the visit. There is no way GEJ will be in Ogun state on a condolence visit to Abati family without seeing OBJ. That is courtesy and respect. We must learn to appreciate those who have gone ahead of us in the same field of life. And that is what Amechi will soon learn in a hard way.So what's with the meeting behind closed doors? Did they have an orgy with their aides? Just asking? Why didn't he meet with Abati's family behind closed door? |
Can the mods close this thread as there are too many allegations against the claim made by the OP? |

A police corporal, identified simply as Friday, has been accused of knocking down a teacher, Mrs. Taskirat Anjolaiya, and her baby, Ammarah. It was learnt that as a result of the incident, the mother and daughter sustained pelvic fracture, brain injury and a broken jaw among others. According to eyewitness, the policeman, who is attached to FESTAC Police Division, was driving against traffic on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway when he knocked down the victims. PUNCH Metro learnt that the graduate of Mathematics Education was alighting from a commercial bus with her child and had not noticed the police patrol van coming from the wrong direction. The victim’s husband, Sulaiman, said the policeman claimed he was running an errand for the Divisional Police Officer, Ibrahim Zango. The policeman was said to have told them that he was instructed by the DPO to drop off a woman at the airport in Ikeja and he drove against traffic to avoid traffic congestion on the appropriate route so that she would not miss her flight. He said, “The accident occurred on June 23, 2013. My wife was on her way to a religious progamme when a police driver drove recklessly on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. He was driving against traffic and shouting at drivers on the right side of the road to clear out. “He eventually knocked down my wife and baby while they were alighting from a bus. “The policeman’s first concern at the scene of the accident was to immediately get a cab to convey the woman in his vehicle to her destination.” PUNCH Metro learnt that the policeman rushed the victims to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, and deposited N70,000 for their treatment. At LUTH however, doctors at the emergency ward discovered that the mother of three had sustained a pelvic fracture, facial bruises, and brain injury while the baby, Ammarah, also suffered deep facial cuts and a broken jaw. Sulaiman lamented that since the incident, over N500, 000 had been spent on treatment. He said the policeman had abandoned the victims at the hospital since depositing the N70, 000. He expressed disappointment over how the DPO handled the matter when they went to report the matter at the station. “A few days after the accident, when I could no longer bear the pressure alone, I went to see the DPO and I told him what happened. Zango lambasted me before offering us additional N10, 000,” he said. Sulaiman lamented that this was too little given the fact that he was unemployed and had spent all his savings. He expressed disappointment that the police, who had been charged with the duty of protecting lives, were the ones inflicting hardship on the family. Our correspondent, who visited the victim at Ward E3 on Thursday, observed that she was recuperating. However, some nurses, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the head trauma she sustained was still affecting her. One of them said, “She gets up from her bed and roams the hospital. Most of the time we have to strap her back to the bed to prevent her from going astray and I cannot say when she will be discharged,” she said. Sulaiman said his wife was a teacher and he feared if she would recover completely. Sulaiman said, “I have been unemployed for several months. My wife is a teacher at Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School and she was the one supporting us until these injuries due to the behaviour of this police corporal who has now abandoned us. “The accident could have been avoided if the police man obeyed simple traffic regulation. Now, the action of the policeman has resulted in serious brain injury to my wife.” The spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident. She said disciplinary action was being taken against the DPO, while the police driver had been detained. “It is really a pathetic case and no one is happy about it. You were the one that just informed us of the incident. We have started taking disciplinary action against the DPO and the corporal. We will hold a meeting on the issue on Friday,” she said. Braide however said she could not say if financial support would be given to the family until after the meeting. |

How many views will we see of the same complex? When Orji Kalu took on OBJ, he couldn't muster the support of one governor, but Amaechi got four governors visiting in solidarity This is enough to tell you that Amaechi, like Tinubu is a master strategist. The PDP is divided while he has the full support of the APC Amaechi has more governors on his side than will openly admit. You can bet he has the support of virtually all the northern governors, the SW governors. At this time, GEJ has only SE governors backing him while the SS governors are divided. Time will tell but Amaechi has his game plan and the longer he stays in the PDP, the more intensely he frustrates them. If GEJ had half the clout OBJ had as president, Amaechi won't still be in the party at this time |
Tinubu, though younger, is way wiser He knows Buhari can't win an election but has a cult following in the north Go figure the rest |
Here we go again. |
