Shma: You just explained my point. But you messed it up on one thing - I think it's on the ground of ignorance. Dumb population has a little to do with the Economy - it plays a very minute role - you can categorize them in unskilled labor - but with huge pp, it can play a great role. I believe Buhari is one of the dumbest humans on the planet but generating high taxes, boosting your country's economy, right? This is why Nigeria has a bigger GDP than South Africa. Not just because of the population but due to what a good number of the populace do as well. SMALL and MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISESAccordng to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) contributed about 48% of the national GDP in the last five years. With a total number of about 17.4 million, they account for about 50% of industrial jobs and nearly 90% of the manufacturing sector, in terms of number of enterprises. NIGERIA: A COUNTRY OF CHEAP TERTIARY EDUCATION by Adeola Daramola
I was surprised when my claim that Nigeria offers one of the cheapest tertiary education in the world was met with disdain. What worried me most was the fact that the disdain came from people who enjoyed and still enjoying the highly subsidized tertiary education.
Some people who agreed were quick to label the Education substandard just to ridicule the country. No matter what we feel about the country, the fact that we all enjoyed cheap tertiary education can not be controverted. The fact speaks for itself.
I gained admission to the then Ondo State University, Ado Ekiti in 1996/97 session. My tuition fee was N5,150. It was one of the most expensive in the country then. I paid N4,850, N4,350 and N3,850 in second, third and final year respectively.
I paid a total of N18,200 in 4 years for a University degree.
At that time, my counterparts in Obafemi Awolowo University were paying N500 as tuition. You heard me right, five hundred naira. This token gave them access to the university health care as well as the library. N90 (Ninety Naira) was their hostel fees for a session. My mates got a University degree from OAU Ife with less than N4,000 . It may interest you to know that medical students in the school paid the same ridiculous amount .
This is not a story of Lord Lugard Era. A Youth Corper allowee at that time was N3,750. Which means, a corper can sponsor someone in the University without blinking an eyelid .
By the time I started my youth service in 2002, a youth corper allowee has been increased to N7,500. This means that my 3 months corper allowee was by far higher than what I paid in 4 years as school fees in a state university.
We are quick to compare Nigeria with the US, Canada, UK and other "saner climes". Someone even said Nigeria does not have students loan. The loan system was instituted in these countries because an average citizen can not afford tertiary education. It may interest you to know that Obama was already the President before he finished paying his student loan. I don't think any bank will give you a loan to pay the ridiculous amount we pay as fees in Nigerian Universities. Till date the average tuition in public universities in Nigeria is N50,000.
Nigeria, arguably, has the highest number of University graduates per square kilometre in the world . Thanks to the highly subsidized education we all enjoyed.
In saner climes, no middle income earner can sponsor a child in the University without resorting to loans that will take the student years to clear. You need as high as $80,000 to study medicine and $60,000 to study law. This did not include hostel accommodation. You will pay as high as $14,000 per session for hostel accommodation. I am using Canada as a case study. Note that education is cheaper in Canada than US . A middle income earner in Nigeria will sponsor a child in a public university without any problem. Infact, a youth corper can afford to send his sibling to a university and afford the fees.
As per the quality, UK has poached 7,000 Nurses from Nigeria within the last 12 months. Saudi Arabia, Canada and UK are scrambling to poach all our Doctors that were trained cheaply by our Government. I don't think these countries will come to pack our "low quality" graduates to fill their " high quality" health institutions.
We believe it is low quality because we got it cheaply. Skilled workers trained by our universities are currently running the show in Canada, UK and US.
I was present in a forum where Mr Babalola, a leading immigration lawyer in Toronto, was delivering a paper. The first thing he did was to thank Nigeria for the cheap education given to him. Babalola studied law at the University of Ibadan. He knew he would have paid through his nose to get a Law degree in Canada.
I deliberately posted this tertiary education claim on our independence day because some people said there is nothing to celebrate in Nigeria. If an ungrateful person gets to Paradise, he will find nothing to celebrate there. It is simply a matter of perspective. You don't value what you have until you lose it.
No country is completely good or completely bad. It depends on what you want to see. I have met Canadians who did not see anything good in their country. Someone said good people will always see the good in people. In the same vein, I believe good citizens will always see the good in their country.

The day you get to be like Sweden,Taiwan or Switzerland with $700bn in GDP's and less than 20m in population then you can talk.As for now you just have lowly $2400 per capita income similar to Ghana,Mauritania, Honduras and Ivory Coast. This has to receive an award for the dumbest post of 2022 so far . |

vankelvin: I know all that you just typed so calm your nerves. Or was it because I did not add city to Kano? I wasnt referring to the State of Kano but the city called Kano.
Per the little I know about Nigeria Kano city was the 2nd most important city after Lagos for the longest time until Abuja came into the picture.. I know Calabar was once the capital but Kano city politically ranks high about all the other cities apart from Lagos and Abuja. No problem with my nerves at all . Hmm you may be right about Kano although I think Kaduna and Zaria in particular was/is probably more important for the North than Kano except in terms of population, but most people would probably say it's Kano though. In general, I get what you're saying. So Tamale is definitely not the third most important city in Ghana economically but rather politically. |

vankelvin: Administrative-wise Tamale is the 3rd city of Ghana but in terms of development it's 6th and in terms of population it's 4th..
Just as Kano isn't your 3rd best city eventhough it gets all the attention from Government. OR? Kano actually is a state with a capital called Kano city. it is probably the second largest state in terms of population because it has over 15 million people. Lagos and Abuja are more like city states especially Lagos. I don't understand what you mean though when you say Kano gets all the attention from Government. Every state/city except probably Abuja are primarily controlled by the state Governors (who also have their budgets and appoint Local Government Chairmen) in terms of developments in the state, even though there are some federal roads to be done in those states or federal projects with national focus. For instance, the Kano Governor is fully responsible for the development of the ongoing Kano Economic City just like the Lagos Governor is responsible for the ongoing red line and blue line rail projects for his state. |

Okay, Ethiopia is about half Nigeria's population, why is Ethiopia's economy not half Nigeria's economy? Why's Egypt, also about half size of Nigeria's population have more than half Nigeria's economy?
Lets hear from our resident economist.
Idiot said it's just circumstances. He even tried, I was expecting him to say the figures were wrong and inflated. Population plays a huge role in Economics no doubt, but there has to be Entrepreneurship and investments on ground as well. This is why Ethiopia is not balling, and not even at least 250 Billion dollars nor has she ever been in the top 5 economies of Africa since 1990. Ethiopia is not balling despite her population because it receives fewer FDI and investments than it should. |

Warri is not doing as well as it should and the city is not beautiful but the brown roofs and old cars in some areas of Ibadan is also something else. Ibadan may supposedly have more opportunities than Warri but some parts of it didn't look appealing at all compared to Warri. Probably because it still has this archaic vibe about it. |

Because the Nigerians have consciously tried to turn their 'bad' story around. Nigeria that was once associated with fraud, 419, now we associate with Davido, WizKid, afrobeat, nollywood, comedy, entrepreneurship etc
There're good positive Nigerians, let's stop lumping all of them together in one basket and giving them a bad name. Even with all their negatives, epileptic power supply etc they're running the biggest economy in Africa, not Egypt, not South Africa, not Algeria. Let's put some respec on their name So there were some Ghanians who thought there was no good Nigerian at all? , like literally? This is news to my ears. Asides London, no where in uk is as fine in general as the "ugliest" places in germany.
I don't know if you're referring to germany as of Adolf Hitler age, but the current germany has zero tolerance for racism. Not denying that there's is still racism, but it's more subtle and you're less likely to notice except you have too much time to pay attention. Their "mind my business" game is roof top level too, so most don't really care about your existence that much to be hurling racial slurs at you.
Their government have implemented immigration programmes over the years to bring in more skilled immigrants into the country bringing. So they've adjusted their approach to be more welcoming to immigrants.
What else do you think drove their economy to the 4th in the world? Even UK, a combination of 4 countries is still behind them in that regard
They're also very polite people but not Friendly. It's just normally difficult to make friends with immigrants as a local and you can't blame them. They also have a culture of being direct in communicating, so it seems they're mean but it's just their language. Exactly. |

rvp2018: You need to learn from Kenya. Kenya oil industry runs an open tender system - gov basically issues the import tender to one of fuel downstream company. That single company is given say 250M dollars tender to import fuel for the entire month - months in advance. The fuel once it arrived in Mombasa port is kept by Kenya Gov pipeline. And is released to different oil companies. You cannot have NIgeria kind of mess where everyone imports or fail to import on time. Kenya people dont even know what fuel shortage is....maybe one petrol station lacks fuel....for few hours...but entire town or city. It's never happened before...people dont even know that fuel will ever run out of petrol stations. Such pics we see in Nigeria are crazy. https://kepsa.or.ke/why-open-tender-system-is-the-best-model-for-petroleum-sector-in-kenya/
Kenya Oil Open Tender System (OTS)
Kenya imports refined petroleum products through the OTS. The importation of petroleum products through the OTS allows Oil Marketing Companies(OMCs) to access petroleum products at the same price and therefore ensure competition in the petroleum market. He noted the OTS is run through monthly tenders, it entails sourcing of petroleum predominantly from the spot market whereby petroleum is sourced from the open market without any prior contracts. PS Kamau added that the industry recognizes that OTS is an effective supply system that creates a competitive and transparent means of availing the product to Kenyans, through the economics of scale. He concluded by giving the various formula they use to calculate the final pump price of petroleum products Not all parts of Nigeria suffered fuel scarcity equally. I know for sure that oil producing cities like Warri didn't have thesame complain. Lagos and Abuja suffered the most. |

68816419: The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) has announced that Nigeria had a total of $23.30 billion in investment announcements for the year 2021, a 39% increase compared to $26.74 billion in 2020. William Ukpe 10 Feb,2022
$23.30 billion announced nationwide, 39% increase from 2020.
The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) has announced that Nigeria had a total of $23.30 billion in investment announcements for the year 2021, a 39% increase compared to $26.74 billion in 2020.
This was disclosed by Acting Executive Secretary of NIPC, Mr Emeka Offor at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
While Lagos State led the list for announcements at $8.7 billion, Nigeria’s Manufacturing sector had the highest number of projects (20) with $10.5 billion dollars representing 45% of investment announcements.
What the NIPC is saying about the investments
The NIPC chief said the work for NIPC in the next five years has been appropriately defined by the National Development Plan 2021–2022 (NDP), which has projected a capital requirement of N348.7 trillion with 86% (N298.3 trillion) expected to be provided by the private sector.
“Mobilisation of this capital has become the focus of the commission. It is in this respect that the commission has begun the process of validating the records of the investment announcements.
“We expect the report from this exercise to give us a further understanding of investors’ readiness to invest in Nigeria,’’ Offor said.
On 2021 investment announcements, it disclosed that 2021 saw announcements rise by 39% to $23.30 billion, higher than the $16.74 tracked in 2020, citing an increase in value, indicative of growing adaptation to the global ‘new normal’ after the economic disruption by restrictions imposed to check the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
“It also indicates the growing confidence of investors in the efforts to improve the national investment landscape,’’ he said.
“The top five states by value of investments, are Lagos (8.7 billion dollars), Bayelsa (3.6 billion dollars), Delta (2.9 billion dollars), Akwa Ibom State (two billion dollars), and Adamawa (one billion dollars).
“The manufacturing sector has the highest number of projects (20) as well as the highest value, 10.5 billion dollars representing 45%.
“The construction sector has 16%, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply 13%, information and communication 12% and mining and quarrying nine percent made up the top five sectors for the year,’’ he added.
Recall Nairametrics reported last year that NIPC announced that Nigeria’s manufacturing sector topped investment announcements for the 3rd quarter of 2021 with US$8.99 billion, attracting 42% of the investments in the country.
https://nairametrics.com/2022/02/10/lagos-leads-in-investment-announcements-in-2021-at-8-7-billion-nipc/ In the voice of rvp2018: "Who is foolish enough to invest in Nigeria where there is no electricity?" . Just a small correction on the report from Nairametric though, it is an increase from 16.74 Billion dollars in 2020 to 23.30 Billion dollars in 2021. |

rvp2018: The WORST countries in Africa by maternal mortality ratio (World Bank modeled estimate per 100,000 live births 2017):
South Sudan 1,150 Chad 1,140 Sierra Leone 1,120 Nigeria 917 Central African Republic & Somalia both 829
ABSOLUTE HELL. So this is what you could come up with after hours of searching on how Kenya is supposedly doing better right? The Nigerian Healthcare system has great room for improvement, but here are also major factors why the maternal mortality rate has always been high in Nigeria. "In Ota, Ogun State, south-western Nigeria, for instance, several women believe that delivering in a noninstitutional setting is better than in a modern facility because traditional birth attendants show more concern and compassion than skilled birth attendants.10 This perhaps shows a clear distinction between actual quality of care provided and perceived quality of care; even if the modern health facilities in Ota have sufficient health experts with internationally recognized good practice, the maternal deaths might still be on the increase, because women’s perception of ‘quality’ influences health service utilization. Similarly, in Northern Nigeria, Puddah (female seclusion) is very common, where women are isolated and encouraged to give birth at home. Many in these settings believe that allowing an outsider help with delivery could be disrespectful.11 Thus, even if maternal health institutions exist in this region, it might not improve health outcomes because of people’s beliefs and culture. Moreover, raising awareness on the existence of a maternal health facility, making it accessible and affordable does not always result to its utilization. For example, in Giwa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State Nigeria, despite living close to a health facility with free maternal health services, majority of the women were not utilizing the facility for child delivery. One of the reasons for the poor use of formal health system in that community is the belief that health care providers have a negative attitude; consequently, many women would rather give birth at home or at a traditional health center". https://www.joghr.org/article/12733-reducing-maternal-mortality-in-nigeria-addressing-maternal-health-services-perception-and-experience |
