So I can bet that this accident is not common and probably the first time it's happening in some years now. Isn't that a testament to some form of good safety too?

well

All the ECOWAS missions I've come to know we're sponsored by the US and UN. Infact, in Liberia, all the mowac were provided by the UN.

You cannot not threaten a junta if you don't have a force to attack with
The mobilisation they did to threaten Gambia, was it also sponsored by U.S?

Abacha sent 700 soilders to Sierraleone at first on his own to first free the capital and restore the president in 1997 before the war continued with UN until 2003. Was Abacha sponsored by U.S to do that? U.S hated Abacha.

ECOWAS have currently deployed hundreds of soldiers to protect Guinea Bissau from coup since 2022. Is that also being sponsored by U.S?

More or less like ECOWAS bowing out since they can't find an option to attack Niger.

The USA is not willing to sponsor another ECOWAS thing, financially.

Dialog is always best
ECOWAS doesn't need USA to sponsor anything. They weren't declaring war against Niger like in Liberia or Sierraleone that involved ECOMOG and the International community at a point as well, but rather more like a secret operation that targets or threatens the Junta. The only thing slowing ECOWAS down is because ECOWAS don't want conflict in that region due to the aftermath and the fact that terrorists would become free to operate taking advantage of the distraction of soilders at the Nigerian-Niger border and the Sahel.

The Battle At Mammy Yoko Hotel, Freetown On 26th May 1997The Battle At Mammy Yoko Hotel, Freetown On 26th May 1997

Nigeria has played a dominant role in ensuring the stability of the West African sub-region and its troops have shown exceptional valour in taming some of the most savage conflicts including the Sierra Leone Civil War. An outstanding show of bravery and iron-like tenacity took place at the luxurious Mammy Yoko Hotel in the Sierra Leone capital of Freetown.
Six years after the brutal start of the war in 1991 between the government and bloodthirsty rebel army, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a military coup by Sierra Leone Army (SLA) officers overthrew then President Tejan Kabbah and brought Major Johnny Koroma to power. Astonishingly this new regime invited the RUF to help it capture Freetown from forces loyal to Kabbah. The RUF had since the beginning of the war engaged in mutilation, mass rape, looting and unspeakable evil that elevated the horror of war to a new level. The RUF accepted the invitation and helped the regime, known as the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) capture Freetown. With this done, a wave of death, mutilation, torture and rape swept the capital.
The international community including Nigeria was outraged at the coup and carnage and opposed the new regime. Suddenly, Nigerian troops who had been stationed in that country for years as part of the ECOMOG force as allies of the Sierra Leone soldiers found that their allies had become overnight enemies. Fewer than 700 grossly outnumbered Nigerian soldiers were suddenly pinned down in a hostile capital crawling with thousands of soldiers and deadly rebels who had been on the receiving end of Nigerian bullets for some time. Out of the modest number of troops, 50 men were posted to secure the luxurious and International Mammy Yoko Hotel which was safe haven for more than 1000 foreigners unable to leave the country including West Africans, Lebanese and international journalists. Unfortunately for the lightly armed men at the hotel, a Nigerian warship stationed offshore started shelling the Sierra Leone Army headquarters. This angered the SLA troops and their RUF allies who in their thousands angrily attempted to storm the hotel, and laid siege with rocket launchers, assault rifles, heavy machine guns and other heavy weapons including a few strikes by an attack helicopter piloted by a Ukranian mercenary.
The Nigerian troops spread themselves out over strategic areas of the huge building (especially the roof) and frustrated the vastly superior rebel force for several hours, killing many RUF rebels and SLA fighters. This group of Nigerian fighters not only secured the hotel, it also committed a sizeable part of the enemy forces in the intense firefight and bought time for the larger Nigerian force to secure the airport and enable Nigerian Air-force jets take control of the airspace as well as ground forces that eventually recaptured Freetown.

Nigerian soldiers are among the finest fighters in the world and on a good day they can really kick butt! Enough respect to the Nigerian Armed Forces. Keeping the peace everywhere they are called to.
Those soilders of the 1980's/1990's were something else.

I believe Niger republic is not the only route to achieving this pipeline construction to Europe. Nigeria can construct it through Morocco then to Spain , from there connect to other EU countries.
The route through Niger Republic is the fastest. It shouldn't take more than 3 years to build because Algeria already have a pipeline connected.

This is the situation.

Nigeria is poised to start the supply of Gas to Europe, who will pay billions in $$$ for this favour. Russia, who just cut off their Gas supply to Europe would do everything to thwat Europe's plan to get Gas from Nigeria by gaining control over countries along the path of the Gas pipeline from Warri Nigeria, supplying Europe. Niger is the perfect country for Russia to distabilize in order to jeopardize the Gas project.

For Russia, its pay back. For Nato, its survival. Winter is coming and Europe will need Nigerian Gas to power their heat systems. For Tinubu, its about making billions from the Gas deal, anything that would stand in the way of this deal, Tinubu will destroy. All of these will come at the expense of the lives and properties in Northern Nigeria. So expect a war in the scale of the Russia and Ukraine war in that region. if the war starts and is sustained for months, don't be suprised if the Gas terminal at Warri is bombed by Russian Drones. When this war begins, it will be difficult to stop....Now is the time to stop it by all means. But my thought is that the powers behind Tinubu are so strong, he cannot call the shots, he cannot stop the war even if he wants to. Europe will freeze to death during the winter if they don't get the Gas from Nigeria. When lives in Europe are threatened, NATO will flex its muscles...i just hope Nukes will not be deployed...God abeg na your hand we dey.
That Gas project to Europe is still in the works. They would still have to pass the pipeline through Niger to Algeria which cannot be immediately done this year. So I don't understand this your story.

Soon beans and onions will become very expensive accross west africa. Niger happens to be the biggest supplier of this commodities. Or called it food.

A war against niger, it is a war against beans and onions.
This is truly a problem.

Though it doesn't affect Nigeria because a good portion of what they supply comes from Nigeria. The surrounding West African nations would have to find ways to get it from Nigeria.

This is why I hate sanctions sometimes. It's the people that suffer and the Junta may not care.

Who is the largest producer of onions in Africa?
According to the FAO, Nigeria produced about 1.4 million metric tonnes of onions in 2019, making it the second largest producer in Africa after Egypt for that year.14 May 2023

And that's where the hypocricy begins from.
Such amendments and coups must be treated the same. They are both illegal
The reason it's difficult is:

Should ECOWAS stop Ghana, if Akuffo Addo amends the constitution now to make it 5 years in office? How does that affect ECOWAS?

But a forceful removal of Akuffo Addo by the military or a single handed rejection of results he lost is where the problem would lie.

I agree ECOWAS have been hypocritical but I'm saying there seems to be a thin line in this thing. Some battles are for the citizens alone some may trigger ECOWAS.

The only reason ECOWAS may not intervene anymore in this Niger case is because it seems the people are for it unlike in the case of Gambia, and that is a valid reason.

My point flew over your head
Note that there is no unity/freedom without JUSTICE.

ECOWAS can't keep cherry picking and expect all countries to follow. Those who illegally extended their stay in office are equally guilty as the coup plotters so ECOWAS should be fair and firm in all their decsions

Again amendment of a constitution is internal affair. However, a coup is a complete termination of the democratic process by force

Like I said, ECOWAS code of conduct does not tolerate a coup especially when you kidnap the former president without releasing him.

However, ECOWAS is reviewing their constitution to include prevention of amendments of national constitution for 3rd terms which would be the real interference into national sovereignty if you ask me.

"Niger's coup : it was the culmination of months of acrimony between President Mohamed Bazoum and his chief guard over the leader's attempts to emerge from the shadow of his predecessor, Mahamadou Issoufou based on people familiar with the matter.

Since taking over from his predecessor in 2021, President Bazoum had sought to stamp his authority on the country by sidelining a number of senior people in both the military and public administration. This account of how Niger's coup unfolded is based on 15 interviews with Nigerien security officials, politicians, as well as current and former Western government officials. Since coming to power, Bazoum had reinforced military cooperation with France and the United States, curbed the autonomy of Nigerien army commanders and launched anti-corruption programs that targeted some of Issoufou's proteges notably in the oil sector. Bazoum also curtailed the size of the presidential guard which was about 700-strong at the time of the coup and started to scrutinize its budget.

Since taking over from his political godfather Mahamadou Issoufou in 2021, Bazoum had sought to stamp his authority on the West African country by sidelining a number of senior people in both the military and public administration.

When the head of his powerful presidential guard, General Abdourahamane Tiani, feared he was next for the chop, he turned on his boss, confident other military commanders would eventually fall in line."

because ECOWAS leadership has always been cowards...or most leadership ...west Africa will never be stable like this...soon we might get another coup in Niger or even mali..when they stop liking the current leader...the trend of coups is too much...soon the entire WA is going to be under military
When ECOWAS intervenes in English speaking and Portugese speaking West Africa like Liberia, Sierra Leone, Gambia, SaoTome, and more recently Guinea Bissau (whose President is currently being protected by ECOWAS military with 172 soilders Buhari sent from Nigeria in 2022 at the request of Guinea Bissau president), why do people not accuse ECOWAS of doing the bidding of the West or France?

Nigerian soilders have been in Liberia and Gambia till this day and trains the Liberian airforce. It's so less complicated but when it comes to French colonies, it's always complex why?

Why Niger?

This is what makes ECOWAS a hypocrite institution. We saw a good number of Heads of State at Allassane and Gnassingbe's swearing in knowing very well those guys extended their tunure of office illegally.
ECOWAS should mind their business and allow Coup plotters in Niger to do their thing.
I just explained in my previous post why Niger. I don't think you read it.

ECOWAS used diplomacy and sanctions for Mali and Burkinafaso but it didn't work. Now they are fed up with just that strategy.

In ECOWAS constitution (so to say), they have a signed agreement in 1993 that allows them to intervene in such things only.

Their legal framework doesn't have within it, terms to intervene when members decide to tweak or change their constitution, only when a sitting president is forcefully removed or the sitting president rejects the will of the people in an election, or when there is a crises that removes the Government, are they allowed to intervene.

If Ghana amends their constitution today, ECOWAS cannot intervene.

The hypocricy about this whole invasion thing stinks.

Those hypocrites at ECOWAS headquarters should come out and tell the World the difference between the Coups in Guinea, Mali, Burkina ,Niger VRS what Allassane Quattara and Faure Gnassinbge did in their respective countries?
ECOWAS can't keep cherry picking and expect all member countries to support their decisions.
Let's break it down one by one or put them in context.

1) Coup in Guinea was understandable and ECOWAS have now resolved to amend their constitution preventing leaders from seeking third term. That is in the works. If ECOWAS doesn't have that in their code, you don't expect them to interfere in Guinea when a president amends constitution for third term.

2) Coup in Mali was first based on insurgency. This is where ECOWAS allowed France lead the campaign against the terrorists in Mali in 2012. After 2012-2013, France was largely disappointing in their fight against the terrorists. The coup then happened in this frustration but was still condemned by ECOWAS. They tried to use diplomacy but as you can see, diplomacy didn't work.

3) Coup in Burkina, almost same as Mali. They took lessons from Mali. ECOWAS again used diplomacy and sanctions, but it seems not to have worked again.

4) Coup in Niger, almost same script again, same playbook and ECOWAS has seen enough. This time they put the option of force there as well to do something differently.

But the Ghanaian leader was part of the ECOWAS meeting. I don't think he objected to the decision. He also sent his service chief to the meeting of ECOWAS army chiefs in Abuja.

Why will you send troops when the current situation benefits Nigeria the most?

Getting rid of French influence in these countries will benefit everyone in the subregion
But ECOWAS including Nigeria and Ghana have never tolerated these kind of things especially when you hold a sitting president captive and do not release him.

Also, Nigeria especially doesn't want Wagner or Russian puppets in Niger because Nigeria is completing her gas pipeline soon and in collaboration with Bazoum, the project through Niger to Algeria was to be flawless.

Russia would not want such a project passing from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria and then Europe. The Algerian end has even been completed already.
