Let me start by saying.....don't let anybody cloud your mind with negative aspect of the uni and the lectures, yes there are a lot of horrible stories but you have to put on a positive mindset and carry on with your project.

Plagiarism is a big issue but you can over come it easily.....incite and reference your work.

There are many software that will help you organize your references ...EndNote is one of them, your uni will have it, download it and use the guideline to learn how to use it.

Use Google Scholar for your journal articles, many articles published there are from well-known journal article websites.

You can use harvard referencing method or other types, inciting within the body of your work is another thing, some people use numbering system...IEEE is a good source and you can also use this website for a quick read http://pitt.libguides.com/c.php?g=12108&p=64736

With the winter approaching many students struggle with time because not everybody wants to get out there in cold but you have to do it. Set your alarm clock.

Get good winter jacket, hat, glove and thermal wear. Aboniki balm is another miracle worker....
Thank you so much for all the help bro! You are an angel

where can I get proper winter jacket, gloves, hat that are not overpriced? I don''t want to waste all my money or be saving and get ill(and loose more money)

The section in bold caught my attention and i completely see where you are coming from. Having a lot of Nigerians in one uni may be a good thing but having them in the same class is a tough one to coup with. Avoid all-Nigerian project group, its a bad idea.
exactly my point. I am working hard to organize myself and come up with a proper time management plan.

I already met one guy from the previous year that was telling me that Cranfield is horrible place with wicked lecturers, that the teaching is a scam and all. He even asked if he can put up with me against university rules,he said people do it all the time wiithout problems. And that alumni from previous years don't have jobs.

I am already booking appointments with the career services,to improve my online application skills,interviews,e.t.c

I am trying so hard to manage my time, this is very difficult for me.

Also need to imporve my writing skills and practise on putting references in my own words. I am so used to copying and pasting.

justwise, I will glad if you can help with any of the above stated issues. It is a whole new world for me,I must confess.

Thanks man.

80% of Nigerians in one class, i dont think that will be fun at all.

Good to know i can stay at Mitchell hostel still sort out my accommodation issue. But then do i need to inform the school of my plan to stay in the hostel for some days still i sort out my accommodation or just show up?

Again concerning the cranfield car pick up for international student, how much time notice do i need to give them before my arrival?

Thank for the offer to assist me on arrival, i gladly accept.

I know u re quite busy settling down and finding your bearing; but when u re less busy kindly respond the queries above.
Everything with the school and almost everything in the UK requires you give them notice before you come over,so call Cranfield university asked to speak with Rebecca Smyth. she will address all queries or direct you to the person that can answer you querries correctly.

You need to log on to eve and you will see airport meeting service. Once you book your flight fill in the appropriate information.

About the Nigerians most are on scholarship like you and the few I met had this air of being the brilliant guys #lol#. Maybe I'm hating, but the message is remember say na only you waka come in the end.

Big congrats to you bro.

But then that make us three - myself and alienbonr.

I will be doing same course - MSc Offshore and Ocean technology With Subsea Engineering at Cranfield on scholarship and Alienbonr is coming for Thermal Power - all under the Energy Department.

Heard also that cranfield is quite an isolated place - good for studies but bad for social and night life.

It is visa that is delaying me now - still waiting for approval and collection.

It will be so nice to have a NL broda on same course in a foreign land - that will help eliminate some of the boredom to some extent grin; though not as your fiance will do.

Right now, i will seriously need some of your assistance knowing that you have passed the way i intend to pass in a few days time.

The assistance is in the following areas
1. How did u package so much foodstuff to travel as i will also like to take some foodstuff too.

2. I was not able to get accommodation in the school hostels as i was told it was filled up. I intend to rent from private landlords. Can u help me if u get any wind of vacant accommodation around and where i could stay or rent an hostel for 2-3 days before i firm up a contract with a private landlords.

3. Can u give a little specific details as regards what is happening in our course since resumption on the 3rd.

4. I would like to call you one on one to keep in touch. If you dont mind can you give me you labara number. DELETED

Just to say:
- I love the goal you have set for yourself academically.
- How do u intend to handle nlng invite when they call?

Thanks bro.
1.I just threw my stuff in a box and made sure it was under 23kg according to air maroc limits ,but please don't bring dairy products, meat or honey. You may not be searched but please be mindful that it is illegal (avoid anything illegal even if it is downloading torrents)

2. Yes you can stay in Mitchell till you sort yourself out,but my brother since you are on scholarship it is imperative you find accommodation on campus. Cranfield is in the middle of nowhere( Milton Keynes is at least 30 minutes by Bus),. From what I learnt about the school things are going to get pretty rigorous soon. From Now to Feb ,there will be marathon lectures with a week in between modules and exams will be in Nov and then December. Just try and stay on campus.

3. Today we basically had inductions ,about career services,IT,fire, etc and most importantly on plagiarism. I will be more than willing to help you when you come on campus with any questions you may have or any difficulties you may face.

4. The class is 80% Nigerian, almost made me regret coming. But I will not falter nor be faint hearted ,though I have this fear on return on investment as I am self-sponsored. Please when you come here remembered , you are here to work hard.

5. I am drawing up my timetable and a quality management system to track my progress in this masters.

@ GeneralShepherd,

Its good to know that you'll also be studying at Cranfield this year.
I hope to resume next week, DFavouredone also.

Since you attended both the orientation & induction ceremony, do you "think" those who missed it would be at a crucial disadvantage?

Also, I heard there's a provision for housing new foreign students in Mitchell hall until they can find their own accommodation. Is this true?

Thanks for your anticipated response.
I will respond to your queries in details by evening okay.I'll be happy to help. Around 8 pm I'll put it in my diary. Oyibo boy things *lol*

You can actually call them for the national insurance, they'll ask for your details on the phone and send you a form via mail to fill.
After filling it, you post it back. Within 2 weeks, you'll get the NI via post.

Remember to also register with a GP.

Also, don't restrict your job search to petty jobs. That is mostly what you'll be getting for now, but you can still find very good jobs in your area of study/profession.

Get very close to your lecturers and program leaders.
If you make a high distinction, they can help you get a scholarship for your PhD, if you're interested.

Goodluck to you hustle bro cool

TravelRe: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by GeneralShepherd(m):
Let me summarize my Cranfield experience so far,

Before I came to Cranfield ,I made inquiries about the school from friends and complete strangers. During my investigation,I discovered that Cranfield has a free Airport meeting service for students from outside the EU. I took advantage of that,I was picked up with a Mercedes Benz and was taken to my room in the school accommodation. Infact I met one Nigerian through linkedin because I wanted to get as much information as possible from the guy about Cranfield. I wasn't surprised by any realities I found on ground, its in a remote rural area

So first I got Lebara and did the 1000 minutes per month plan to Nigeria,I felt alot better when I talked to my fiance ,and my family.Next I went to the Cranfield Student association building and read every single word on every notice board there. I also got the University map,bus route booklet, and a free recipe book.

My sister is a British citizen by birth so she advised me against using shops in the university,so I went to Milton Keynes today to buy the things I didn't bring from Nigeria.A Nigerian friend took me to a farmer's market where I bought tomatoes for 1 pounds(1kg),curry,pepper,palm oil, groundnut oil for under 12 pounds. I forgot to mention that I came to the UK with garri 10 painters, bread fruit(20 cups),dry fish(2kg),Cray fish worth 5000 Naira, 5 packs of indomie hungry man size(I ate three packs for sustenance till I went to market today).

I am also going to apply for my National insurance number tomorrow (you it need to work),I want to get a cleaning job in the school for 7.50 and hour ,2hrs daily ,five days a week. When I go shopping I check for savings as little as .20 pounds( save that five times and you have a pound),every penny counts unless you are on scholarship.

I am about drawing up a comprehensive timetable as this is the most important aspect of your sojourn in the UK. Without a proper plan your academics will surfer.

It is not an easy road but I believe it will end well. The stress will come, loneliness will come but its just a sacrifice I have to make for one year with hopes of a brighter future.

I am going to leave UK next september with an Msc in Offshore and Ocean Technology with Subsea Engineering(and with above 85 percent score). You know why I am so sure? I am Nigerian, we are naturally rugged. Gold is made pure only when it goes through fire!! adversity makes us stronger.

I managed to make 67, feel bad but I.gave it my best shot

Keep the faith brothers and sisters. Keep calm, and be Nigerian.
TravelRe: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by GeneralShepherd(m): 12:13am On Oct 03, 2014
So my.flight is by 6.50am in the morning and I'm awake by 12 am.

It's been an opportunity I looked forward to but at this time I just feel like not going. My girlfriend, my parents and my sister will be seeing me off tomorrow to the airport.

I will miss Nigeria,my job, my one true love,my friends.

Hope i don't get home sick. Anyway a man has to do what a man has to do

Sincere9gerian: Nigerians and their penny wise, pounds foolish mentality. I guess it is easier to travel to ones school to collect call up letter than to pay N4,000 online from the comfort of ones home? I thought people should have pushed for reduction in the fee lrather than outright suspension or cancellation.
If you didn't defend this I would have been shocked. So will the students not still go to their school for final clearance?

majekdom2: I understand , am not disputing that ... an edge does not mean he will do better when faced with challenges. the standard of your school matters , thats why companies have R and D centres in univeristies. .... but not all graduates perform at their peak.that is his point. there is the personal development and determination. some just wanna have the degrees because of the name.
For you to graduate from the aforementioned schools, my brother you have what it takes

majekdom2: fact !!! its just who you are that says it all.
An Oxford graduate is naturally ahead of you! There's no argument in that. Even in the west Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, MIT, CalTech, Harvard, Yales are known for excellence.

Their graduates have maintained excellence over decades. Please don't compare OAU to these schools!

Graduate from good schools gives you a decisive edge. You said so yourself.

OAU is not in the first 1000 in the world.

How many patents belongs to students at OAU? How many projects in OAU contributed to advancement of science or engineering?

Do you guys understand how universities are ranked?

Sanchez01: I made up my mind not to post on the thread again, rather, follow the arguments. However, I just couldn't overlook this post.

Of what use is graduating in Light Years when there are no job offers waiting around? I graduated from OAU and truth is, there were strikes in my time, the stress was huge and reading took its toll on me most of the time. But one thing was certain; the Obafemi Awolowo University and her lecturers DO NOT sell handouts. That you have a problem with Nigeria does not mean you should commit the hasty generalization fallacy. A Nigerian University fed me a powerful mindset to face the world with. The tuition fee in my time was incredibly low and I end up paying myself most of the time. Just so you remember, I rounded off in June and some of the experiences I garnered in school fetch money for me now. I have not gone for my youth service yet, but I make money writing/proof-reading articles. I worked top print media organizations while in school and served as a freelance journalist. Quality education is not a mirage in Nigeria, education in the West could be better if compared to ours. Still, that does not call for the write-off of Nigeria. Great or small, we have our reasons for doing the things we do. Those in the West would want to justify their reasons for being there, the same goes for some in Nigeria. NO PLACE in the world is an UTOPIA; problem with most youths is the job they seek from the Government.

For those comparing Nigeria of the 80's to that of the present, I can only say a lot has changed. The rate at which graduates are released into the outside world now is far greater than then. Not everyone of us would end up getting that job that we dreamed of and this apply to every part of the world.

Getting a degree is not the problem, rather, the acquisition of skills which could tell if an individual is productive or not. As of today, I have tens of options on what to settle for after my service year, thanks to my judicious use of the strikes that took place while in school.
We all decide what we want for ourself.
Where is OAU again in the world university ranking?
Please don't delude yourself
TravelRe: On Nigerians And The 'must Travel Mentality' by GeneralShepherd(m): 1:12pm On Sep 30, 2014
majekdom2: you know my problem with you is you overate this abroad shit and talk down like nothing is happening in Nigeria at all.you must have destroyed so many lives with the orientation you give these people. I see reasons why majority of graduates do not even care which school and country they go do their masters.some even go to romania , bulgaria thinking its about masters . yes , some IOC pick up students from overseas but not from any how college. there are some schools abroad which do not even match up to standards of some of our private schools here an still we just want masters. now to the nysc dude... your masters does not guarantee a job both nigeria and abroad especially in the eu ,... exception to america and canada where you may be given post studay visa. the masters giveas you an edge tho . per adventure you are smart , and if you have no experience be it internship or voluntary experience am sorry you might loose the opportunity to someone who has got some little experience. research on entry level jobs with your intenet and see for yourself.I am still on the graduate level and I am sure of what am saying. performance is key , graduate positions are the most competitive. If it was so sweet in the eu, majority of masters student will not be competing with bsc holders in nigeria for jobs. you can check the multinational companies thread on the job and vacancies section of this forum. listen to news ... turn your tv to bbc and hear eu graduates complain of no jobs , some even have 2 masters degree from outside the eu, yet nothing. am not discouraging you ... foreign masters gives you an edge but dont think its a key to good life because its from another country.if you are able to secure a job that pays you about 4 to 5 mil per annum , you should work for about 5 yearas and apply for a study leave.
Nevertheless, Subsea engineering degree from Stravanger, Aberdeen, Cranfield, Houston is worth the risk and every penny.

justwise:

He may not get a job after graduation but...he will graduate on time without strike disrupting his studies, he will get quality education without paying a lecturer for some copy and paste handouts and that certificate will be recognized.
But justwise on a more serious note, getting an Msc in the UK or Eu is better with work experience.

majekdom2: I guess you are misunderstanding me totally... I am not against anyone travelling as I said, what I am against is youths traveling with the intention of constituting nuisance to a developed economy. you hear people say 'if i enter yankee like this , na to wo ke ' mean steal credit cards. some of the nationals of these countries get scared to associate with them atimes. now you just formed familiarity with the VC because he is successful . why didnt you form familiarity with the criminal that was arrested for murder uk or the guy rotting in jail overseas. travelling boosts your career cause of the internatioonal exposure ... no denial. I understand every average Nigerian's pain ..... been there . I was listening to charles b program the other day and a young man called and he was like he is frustrated , he was asked why ...... he said he had long time been pursuing visa to the states to study and has been denied 3 times , he was asked how old .... he said 23 . he got the insult of his life ...... for about 6 years he refused processing admission in nigeria perhaps he failed jamb on diff occasions. this is the problem. majority of the youths have overatted this stuff without understanding there is what is called capability measurement..... some think its just greener there without hardwork. am not super smart or anything . yes our educational system is wack ... but you give some graduates some aptitude test and they cannot make 20 percent .... what happened to the ones that made 80 and was in the same class.the next comment is man know man ....I know peeps who have had good jobs , won scholarships abroad without any connect. we need to check ourselves rather than term the country "useless" . anyone can travel but understand if you have got the capability rather than constituting a nuisance to another government.
The major scholarships in Nigeria

Nlng-30 scholars
Agip-10
Ptdf-100
Chevening - I don't know

Presidential scholarship - for 1st class only

So with abt 200 scholarship positions in a year in nigeria you feel we are developing man-power.

Those countries you mentioned have got a lesser population , they are surrounded with countries with good developments .These are things to be considered. how many countries in west africa can be compared to china or australia. these countries are the reason behind the successes of malaysia and the countries you metioned. an australian is free to work in singapore cause they believe he would be coming to add greatly to them ... which is very much true. I am not in support of the situation but my point people should stop condeming a situation they are doing nothing to change. the govt is used to criticism , condemations and the rest of it ....nothing is happening still. don't you think if they stop hearing these criticisms , somethin better can happen.... only a fool keeps doing something that produces no results over and over again.
Well majekdom2, people complain because of frustration. Nothing more.

And you can't change Nigeria, you just have to smell the coffee.

Now you are blaming other west african countries for Nigeria's failure? Wow, this your Mobil job has blinded you to the realities of Nigeria..
I really do not blame you as I don't expect you to criticise a system that favours you.

Like someone asked earlier do you really believe that you are more intelligent than any other Nigerian graduate without a job?
