all commentary about xi's hesitancy conveniently skips china's modern history

1. china has defended its core interest when its capabilities were less than 1% of its current capabilities and when the US was by far more powerful than her
2. china talks a big game particularly about multipolarism and a fair rebalancing of the global order and has to walk the talk

the rest of us were on our own until xi and co came with their "i have a dream" spiel

north korea, venezuela, cuba, syria, iran, russia
that was it
out of 193 countries
if you can't go to bat for your core 6 allies then why is he wasting everyone's time

china adds more ships every year to its navy than the us, south korea, and japan combined
it adds the entire french navy to its navy every four years
does xi think the us will wait until he has every duck in a row and is as ready as a kitted up templar knight before making a move
is usrael waiting until iran rebuilds its defenses and tests a nuke before having a round 2

of those 6, syria is gone, venezuela just got smacked across the face but is still holding on, iran is about to fight an existential war for the second time in 6 months, russia is taking on all of nato and has the scars to prove it, cuba is in an icu
north korea is only being spared because south korea consider them siblings and has rebuffed the hegemony at every turn to activate that front

If the US, alongside its brother, the UK, can seize a Russian-flagged tanker near Venezuela and nothing happens. What stops them from seizing a Chinese-flagged tanker filled with oil and food items? What would be China's response?

This question has been in my head throughout today after reading your post. For this to be successful, it means they have secured what the Chinese currently dominate that is crucial to their economies. The major product/item is raw earth minerals.

This is why real estate in Nigeria does not make sense to me because you are competing with small thousands of dollars against hardened political criminals who loot billions of naira. How and where does one start? This excludes the infrastructural challenges, just the valuations, and because the country is poor, with the majority of the real estate activities performed by diasporans (70%), it means there are many unsold or practically unsellable properties. International buyers, just as international tourists, are not interested in buying real estate as they do in other countries.

In my state, the biggest players are politicians, and they have over-inflated the entire vicinity. So you invest with your hard-earned dollars, and your buyer is most likely a politician in a market with few buyers. In some states, you fit buy today, the governor or someone close to the governor tries to take that property from you. In other states, insecurity has rendered any property value to 0.

Lagos remains the best because at least the economics, demographics and geography fit it. Elsewhere is rubbish!

That was that China is afraid to fight and avoiding, whether they like it or not, they will fight it.
Whatever projection they think they are planning won't work.
I read someone wrote by 2050, China will displace the US by doing nothing but continue in this road they are.
Helloooohuh??
If China continues on this road, by 2030, they would have moved so backward instead of forward that it will alarm them.
You can only thrive, expand and rich if your interest is been protected else, you will become poorer.
The last company I worked for is a French company that went broke and bankrupted and they had to sell it to a bidder.
Chinese companies were the foremost bidders but just for the company not to fall into the hands of Chinese and make them stronger, American companies came onboard and it was sold to them.
50% of the properties in the company were owned by Chinese investors and they are been forced out to sell the properties cheaper or face the option of these properties not getting contracts and costing the Chinese owners maintenance money.
Either way. They are being banged.
This is what is happening at the background/behind the scene in the corporate world far from the public eyes unlike the war that is popular.
The Americans are going any length to push out Chinese investors, companies and rendering them poorer.

China will never get richer towing this part.
This happened in Australia even during Trump's first term. So many Chinese investors have been barred, restricted or told they cannot buy those assets simply because they are Chinese. Corporate America is happy with Donald Trump, and to be honest, he was the best hand possible to tackle China from US-led West point of view. I have read how flagging companies - broke and almost out of business - have Chinese bidders all of a sudden, one reads that an American firm - competitor or private equity - comes in as the preferred bidder, whereas the Chinese bidders were qualified and in most cases offered the highest sum. In cases where the Chinese win, you read comments filled with agony that the Chinese won.

So, the Chinese must be ready o. That fight they are dodging, they must fight it, or else it comes to them right in their faces. Sometimes, I think they don't want to do it now because of the economics at home or something else I don't know, but they are dealing with gangsters o
Foreign AffairsRe: Russia-Ukraine War: World News, Weapons & Battlefield Discussions - Live by Gerrard59(m):
FoolishBoy419:
That will not happen in our lifetime. USA lacks the means to refine rare earths and China has made it nearly unprofitable for companies to venture into the sector.
The US does not have to be the sole refiner as they could be refined elsewhere such as neutral Malaysia. However, the US wants to dominate the sourcing as China is the sole domineering power. The Chinese have retaliated by barring the exports of refining technologies/knowledge outside of the country and permissible only when approved. However, there exists a risk of seizure of Chinese assets by governments backed by the US. Or an outright rejection of Chinese investments by some countries or high tariffs. The former has just happened in the DRC and the latter in Mexico.

interestingly, venezuela does not need an active intervention
it only needs an economic lifeline
dispatch a flotilla to reliably break the blockade
that's it
the worst that'd happen is troop deployment and venezuela is vietnam on steroids

6 out of 193 countries
and the largest economy, navy, and most populous country on the planet is giving excuses that would embarrass f*cking sandal-wearing militants in yemen
and it's not like these countries are basket cases
russia is a superpower. iran is formidable. both have their respective hegemonies and are civilization states, venezuela has the largest oil reserves. cuba is a small island nation in a prime location facing off a foe that could practically squash it like a bug. north korea is ride or die.
each one of them is a first round pick of resilience and sheer f*cking chutzpah deserving of xi's overt support and yet he's dropping lamba about international law
f*ck international law. f*cking act.

does he think the us will stop with venezuela
let them finish up setting up their alternate supply chains for chips, rare earth, and the core industrial metals
they will give every major supplier of chinese raw materials the same choice they gave maduro
kick out the chinese or spend the night in rikers
they already attempted same in panama and in the netherlands
just outrightly try to seize chinese billions in investment and unceremoniously kick 'em out and there's no war yet

-Lord
You are very correct here. It has happened in those countries and will happen in the DRC pretty soon. A deliberate change or coercion of governments and policies towards the Chinese to starve them of needed natural resources. Those political protests in Indonesia and Tanzania after their respective elections were attempts to challenge the incumbents. Even the one in our country is to attack Chinese interests. That new port in Peru really pained them, and Lula in Brazil is another person they don't like, as there are plans to create a railway that will pass through the middle of the country to Paraguay. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Bi-Oceanic_railway

The main target is China with the aim of starving its economy. So yes, I do agree with you that Xi is too slow or indecisive towards China's allies.

To be fair, the Houthis have nothing to lose or less to lose compared to China. I am ignorant of its current military strength, but do we really expect China to defend Venezuela in America's backyard? Yes, the US is currently in China's backyard, but that was when China was not as rich as it is today.

I agree that China needs to openly defend its interests, but the stakes are quite high because I think the Chinese don't want a flurry of sanctions to be imposed when they aren't yet ready.

I went through the comment section of an FT article, and in there, they discussed how tariffs will be massively increased once the US has a grip on rare earth minerals, with a timeline of 2-3 years. How the Chinese plan to counter a loss of rare earth mineral dominance is yet to be seen.

When we tell them these things they think we are jealous, but for the first time in my life I have become genuinely concerned at the number of YOUNG single mothers. Many didn't have these kids out of wedlock, they married, had kids and came out. Anyone that visits FB and TikTok knows what I am talking about. I saw one yesterday, 21yo SM of 2. Her username is "Peace Real Time". How are you a mother of 2 toddlers at 21, let alone a SM of 2?
Without being too academic, there are many factors/reasons for the rise, depending on the region these single moms are situated in. In some regions, continuous butchering of able-bodied young men results in single moms. A place like Owerri will always have single moms because of Tiger Base that targets young men in the state.

Another category is young girls who dated reigning yahoo yahoo boys and old takers. For this category, it is a clear case of play stoopid games, win stoopid prizes.

If you have to marry a small girl half your age, ensure you remain at your A-game physically, sexually and financially. There is so much aesthetic marriages online for them to watch and feel you are not treating them well. Some will have friends marry later to younger, finer and maybe richer men. She will start wondering where she was rushing to with you. It is even worse if she has never experienced comfort herself.
Agreed. Come correct or don't come at all. The era of controlling a young married woman's access to the outside world is rapidly ending. Two-income households are common, and if she has to engage in a small business, she needs to access the public, and no better arena than social media.

Actually, evolutionary biology supports women's hypergamy. The issue is: women now take up half of the available jobs while maintaining their focus/eyes on the top-earning men. You cannot take up half of what the men use to advance themselves, yet position yourself to men in the top-tier, and at the same time complain that there is a "shortage of quality men".

I’m having the feeling that Op feels the husband deprived her of her youthful life by marrying her off @22, but my sister let me tell you the truth, nothing dey street oo. I don’t know who might be advising or influencing you to feel inadequate in your marriage but there are no perfect marriage anywhere. I’ve seen cases like this and the women always turn bitter after leaving their husbands because they realize there’s no love in the street. Don’t leave your home to turn sidechick to someone’s else husband oo. All the problems you listed about your husband can be worked on. I think his inability in bed can be attributed to his habit of drinking alcohol which when cut out or reduced, will get better. If his father is still alive, talk to him about the situation or a male figure that he respects. And remember, please don’t cheat on him cuz once you do, kiss your marriage goodbye. Men who don’t cheat hardly forgive cheating oo
I think we should focus on the older men who don't pay attention to their physical and mental health before getting a 22-year-old as a wife. We live in a social media age characterised by fast-moving videos and numerous content creators, far more than a decade ago. With this, young people can be easily impressed by what they see online. So, warning her not to cheat is not realistic. If she wants to, she will do it. The avenues to do so these days are a dime and a dozen.

22 who married someone twice her age? shocked

This is partly why older ladies caution young lasses of older men, while ensuring the major reason a young lass should marry an older man is financial. This man does not have money. That is the core problem.

This is also why it is good for a man to marry early, preferably before his late 30s and early forties, and for men with less financial means, marry ladies in their late 20s and early 30s. If you must marry such a young lass (below 25), please have money and be physically fit.

I don't know how the US or more specifically, the White man does it, but they will domineer over the rest of the world for a long time to come. Before I start let me PARTICULARLY condemn the absolute IGNORANCE contained in this mendacious ideological rhetoric -

You do know that the British owned a refinery in Nigeria in the 1960s or so? I think the Port Harcourt Refinery was originally owned by the British Petroleum or Shell but it was SEIZED, STOLEN AND NATIONALIZED by the government of Nigeria under Olusegun Obasanjo or Muratala Mohammed in the 1970's.

Your statement is CAPITAL IGNORANCE, I didn't even bother to look up anything before disputing it. I challenge ANYONE to call me a liar.

That's a major REASON nobody built a refinery in Nigeria AFTER that....fear of seizure by the government. Heellllooooo, is this too hard to find out, this is something EVERY Nigerian adult should know about. Goooodness, university educated Nigerians, who did this to you all? And then of course the entire impetus for any refinery was KILLED by the imposition of FUEL SUBSIDIES in 1973.

Like it or not, go read the news, Dangote maintained and stated and shouted it as far back as 2010 that he would only build his refinery on the understanding that fuel subsidy would be cancelled and prices deregulated. And that is EXACTLY what happened, because he has the political connections or knowledge to predict outcomes... if foreigners are not building now it's because they're still afraid of SEIZURE and also there's better opportunities elsewhere....same reason that my good self is not investing in Nigeria. Just in the last 48 hours some of the major oil companies in the USA have stated they won't want their seized properties back in Venezuela because they have more lucrative deals elsewhere...Guyana for one.
If Guyana plays its cards, it could become very rich. However, its neighbour, Trinidad and Tobago, also enjoyed oil money, but T&T is very unsafe.

Still need more evidence? Go look at why Shell abandoned their planned gas projects in Mozambique and moved the money to Australia or vice versa, it had to do with which government provided a more stable environment and incentives.
To be fair to Mozambique, Total is deeply involved, but needs security assurances from the central government.

Overvalued currencies KILL productivity and value addition, such currencies PROMOTE consumption. South Africa has a FREE FLOATING, uncontrolled currency, Nigeria has a government controlled currency, Kenya is more productive and exports more value added products than Nigeria because it has a free floating currency, THAT IS THE EXPLANATION and the DIFFERENCE, [i] it's real, anyone can go research this and learn. Then add property rights
But the naira has been devalued or at least considerably compared to Buhari's years. Regarding overvalued currencies, aren't the Singaporean Dollar and Swiss Franc too overvalued? Property's rights are stronger in Kenya and South Africa than most parts of West Africa.

demographic homogeneity and democracy and everything is clear. Why is Ghana more stable than Nigeria? It's because 50% of the country is from the same tribe.
This is our major problem - a country of many ethnic nations. So much distrust and cultural beliefs that clash against each other.

The Europeans and later Americans did contribute to the development of Black Africa. Right now the long term results are evident in South Africa, where a White Minority have created an environment that made the Negroes of Azania into the 2nd richest group of Negroes on the planet, while Nigeria that REJECTED White European rule became the Poverty Capital of the World in 2018. The Europeans learned from the TRAGEDY of Black African independence, so before giving up power in South Africa in 1990, they INSISTED on property rights and a free floating currency. The Great Traitor Nelson Mandela signed the secret protocols and they were written into the Constitution.
The interesting thing is how there are more Black dollar millionaires in South Africa than in Nigeria.

How do you explain that Zimbabwe expelled White Farmers and blamed the resulting economic disaster on Western Sanctions, while Nigeria that has not been sanctioned since 1999, became the Poverty Capital of the World? I sincerely crave and beg an explanation for this from the Afrocentric Patriots. If Oyibo sanctions, general malevolence and oppression is the root of Zimbabwe economic underperformance, why is it that Nigeria is the Poverty Capital of the World DESPITE enjoying good relations with the West, vast crude oil and natural gas reserves AND a brilliant, innovative and hard working and thriving population?
You are asking very tough questions o

The ONLY SOLUTION to POVERTY anywhere and in any time in history is FREE MARKETS.

Governments are the MAJOR OBSTACLE to free markets because the GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS and POLITICIANS use their POWER to steal from the BUSINESSMEN & INNOVATORS who are the actual producers & providers of goods and services. The worst governments are those with SOCIALIST, COMMUNIST & PROGRESSIVE ideologies because they're usually composed of unproductive, jealous, wicked and inert human beings who HATE successful people. Socialism, progressivism, liberalism and such are simply jealousy dressed up as political ideology....that wo/man has more wealth than me so I'm going to take it from them!!! shocked
Agreed. The free market, nothing else, is the antidote to poverty across the world.

This is why a cursory look at migration flows between EU/Europe & the USA will always show MORE people migrating from the so-called paradise of Europe to the extreme hell of the USA. I make that claim without even looking up any immigration stats. Those who don't see the logic of WHY this happens are welcome to dispute it with evidence. And the people that migrate THE MOST from Europe to the USA are the most productive and innovative people, the risk takers and ambitious people.
I remember when most netizens mocked Trump when he said Norwegians, Swedish, Finnish, etc., should emigrate to the US. They argued that those folks are not interested in moving to the US, whereas the best and brightest of Norwegians, Swedish and Finns move to the US to ignite their careers and businesses.

The closest relative of the USA in Europe is the UK, they're Anglo nations. Again, without looking at statistics, I make the claim - net migration to the UK from the European Continental mainland is higher than migration from UK to the European Continental mainland. That may have changed in the LAST YEAR OF 2025 as the Labour government in London has put up increasingly SOCIALIST budgets.
True, and unfortunately for Europe, there is no replica for the UK. Certainly not Germany and definitely not France. grin

This write up will be short and straight to the point.

Many America antagonists believe what made America the greatest and strongest nation on earth is the Petrodollar, they are wrong. urrency is just a paper, yes it can help but without equal value currency in your hand or control is worthless. American founding fathers are very smart people, they realized very early that the only way to build a formidable nation that will reign as world superpower for long if not forever is to assemble humans from every part of the world to form a great nation that will be like the world itself. With this in mind, they started the diversity visa lottery, a program that brought humans from every country in the world to America for free to become citizens. This is like building a small world inside one nation. What that means is that any type of human being you want you will find it in America. Be it Russian talents, Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Nigerians, Iranians, Iraqis, Israelis, Saudis, Qataris, etc, they are all found in America as citizens even in their armies and universities carrying out groundbreaking researches ahead of other nations. If you doubt me, check Lagos state. Lagos state is just like USA of Nigeria and that is why it is the most successful state in Nigeria but some ignorant tribalistic politicians think turning Lagos to their tribal-identity state will make Lagos better, they should continue, time will teach them some hard lessons about life.
While the acceptance of diverse people also contributed to the immense growth in the US, the destruction or failures of other world powers after WW2. So, while other powers were reeling from defeat or economic servitude, the US was the sole rising power that was unhurt. A monopoly of sorts to determine how the world should or would work in its favour.

Nevertheless, the US invested in research and development while adopting largely free market principles. These principles, I believe, propelled investors and innovators to fire on as they believe - rightfully so - that their hard work will be rewarded. Humans gravitate towards places and people who will contribute to their successes. The US proved to be that place, especially as it became diverse. However, the continuous influx of people from diverse places with varying cultural beliefs is stretching the system in that some people do not believe in free market principles, their beliefs should be above others etc.

Additionally, the US prospered as it was racially dominant, with Whites specifically Anglo-Saxons. From my observation, prosperous and developed countries became so because they were or are racially/ethnically homogenous. You mentioned the Chinese accepting immigrants. lol. I put it out that China will start failing should it have an open immigration policy like the US. If the Chinese can achieve what they have without importing immigrants to be a permanent part of their society, why need them now? Anyway, two Chinese dominant enclaves - Singapore and Hong Kong - have implemented immigrant-friendly policies largely because of their British histories. Interestingly, they put up high requirements for aspiring immigrants, such as high-end skills and salaries. Also, in the case of Singapore, it favours ethnic Chinese over other races.

Another benefit that comes with homogeneity is safety. Almost everyone is the same, so they protect their interests. Check across the world: prosperous countries tend to be safe, but prosperous countries that are homogeneous are safer. One major culture/language/religion/belief system. Another factor is promoting critical thinking, especially with mathematics. For a country to prosper - develop and build hard products that sell in the global market - it needs to promote hard-core scientific subjects such as maths, physics and chemistry. This is where I believe the Chinese have a natural advantage, as it makes them critical thinkers and dutiful workers.

Lastly, cultural practices. All cultures are not equal. Some cultures are more equal than others, and this is even in Nigeria. I don't believe that all cultures are equal. Since humans are different and they produce different outcomes, why should the belief be that all cultures are the same? Some cultures promote crude capitalism and profit-taking, others see a sin in excessive profits, while others are laid-back. Some cultures believe in live and let's live, others don't. These cultures manifest themselves in countries across the world, and just as we cannot expect all human beings to be rich, we cannot expect every country to be prosperous.

South Korea's own is finished, anyway. Until artificial wombs are invented, I don't see the birth rate rising to the minimum TFR. More schools to be closed. The sources of preferred migrants are Vietnam, China, parts of Southeast Asia and Central Asia. Except for Central Asia, the rest are experiencing low birth rates. Central Asian folks, some of whom are ethnic Koreans o, complain of racism as well in Korea.

For those advocating South Korea importing Africans, well, birth rates of immigrants mimic the natives within a generation. The only solution to increasing the birth rate is to have women give birth to as many children as possible. However, modern day women are not interested in such. So bear with the low birth rates..

Yes they pay them high salaries by Nigerian standards. Not by their standards. The only good thing about life in a developed country is good public services . But for everything else , na OYO. That's why if you spend time on foreign equivalents of nairaland you go see them complain about how things are expensive and how the cost of living is high. Sometimes I want to beg them to come and sample life here so that they will know what is hardship
Yes, yes and yes.

If you were born in 1995, you're still a lad and shouldn't be talking as if you're middle-age person. Na just 3 years separate you from Gen-Z.
Don't mind him. A 30 year old suddenly feels he is way older than the eldest GenZ.

not just her. Her likes are mentally dull, I'll tell you for free that majority of Nigerians don't know that there's a website called nairaland.
And I'll also tell you that if you were able to find nairaland in twenties and thirties or even bellow, you're 75% smarter!
That is untrue. Nairaland is in the top five most visited Nigerian owned website.

As kids and teenagers,
We all did stupid things that we regret later. I was born 1995 and my generation did worse oooh . The only difference is that we didn't document it for the whole world to see.

They record and post their crimes online
We do ours codedly and low-key That is what set us apart
Lol

Maybe 1985, but '95 folks are just two years away from being the eldest GenZs. So, which one is "my generation did not post things online"? Ox of Paystack na GenZ?

I migrated to Morgan Capital and had my porfolio in Bamboo transferred to my account with them. It wasn't easy but I got it done.

Unrelated, what do you need three monikers for here? Abs.o1ute1, Renowe.ned2 and Gerrar.d59?
For the first line, thank you.

The second line: that is an unfair accusation. This is my only Nairaland username. I know nothing about the other two. Why accuse me falsely?
